Graphic, Animation, Combat System, Narrative and AI. are great but i hate mission structure and plot, start chapter>cut-scene>explore >cut-scene>explore>fight>cut-scene>explore>fight>flash back>end chapter... it's very boring.

Enjoy a lot of the game, looks fantastic but had a few unexplained AI moments (not uncommon in most games to be fair) but the kicker is the storyline, I just really dislike the changes to the characters, there's also a weird disconnect between how they act and then specific cut scenes.

I play slower than most people and wasn't in a rush to complete it since I'd heard about the ending anyway. Did not expect it to be quite as poorly finished as that though. What a way to kill off what could have been a great series of 3-4 games. I've no interest in a sequel at this point.

Pros: some of the best graphics I have seen, gameplay is like the first game and I liked that
Cons: story is what I disliked most. It’s such a spit in the face of Joel and Ellie. This game tries to make you sympathise with the enemy and I think it fails.

“Revenge is a dish best served cold!”

The thing about revenge is that it slowly strips away your humanity. A plot of a game based on revenge is a hard road to follow, especially when the game FORCES you to play as Abby, a character that savagely murders a central character to the game that in turn compels Ellie venture on a revenge mission.

Four years after their perilous trek across the treacherous post-pandemic United States, Ellie and Joel have returned back to Jackson, Wyoming, where for all intent and purpose, live in a safe compound. However in the world of the Last of Us, safety is an illusion that can easily reveal itself, as while out on patrol with her girlfriend Dina, Ellie’s world is shattered to pieces and she vows revenge on each of the perpetrators.

Abby Anderson is a playable character from Seattle Washington that treks across the dangerous journey to Jackson where they hash out their plan for revenge. Once she finds the person she stops at nothing to destroy everything sacred to Ellie.

Ellie leaves the safety of Jackson and travels to Seattle Washington where she has to deal with infected, the Washington Liberation Front (WLF is also known as “Wolves”), and the Seraphites, called Scars by the WLF.

The Wolves are a strong paramilitary group that in the early days of the outbreak overwhelmed the military and scored a foothold in Seattle. They are well armed and their structure enables them to control most of the area around Seattle where they maintain control and patrol most of the area with their way of justice.

The other faction is a cult-like group calling themselves the Seraphites. They live in trees and abandoned basements or up in the skies. Most of them use arrows, spikes, knives, and other homemade weapons. Only the leaders have guns but most of the firepower is with their modest weapons and stealthy ways. Their way to communicate is via whistling and the first time you hear it sounds kind of ominous and creepy.

Ellie arrives in Seattle and finds herself in the midst of a turf war between the Wolves and the Scars. She must defend herself and survive between the hordes of infected, the Wolves, and the Scars.

The infected have also evolved, as now you have a new infected known as Shambler and the hulking menacing Bloater infused with other forms of the infected identified as the Rat King.

At the risk of spoilers, the game is broken into three days in Seattle period where you first play as Ellie, and then you play in the same three days from Abby’s perspective. Naughty Dog is ramming Abby down our throat trying very hard for the player to feel sympathetic for her, almost as an explanation for her actions in the very first section of the game.

We can emphasize with Ellie, we have an emotional connection with her and Joel, but in my playtime with Abby, I could care less. Additionally, the Ellie of this game isn’t that likable either. She can be cold and ruthless and lacks emotion. The game wants us to form an emotional connection with her based on everything she’s been through, however, she is a shell of the sweet and feisty Ellie that we loved in the first game.

I do not care for the gay agenda that Naughty Dogs wants ram down our throats. If the relationship between her and Dina is relevant to the story is warranted then that is one thing, but it seems to me that this wasn't warranted in the game.

The ending of this game also makes you wonder why we played this game. We went alone on this killing spree for hours only for the game leave us on an ending that made regret putting the twenty to twenty-five hours into an emotional rollercoaster of feelings that at the end made no sense.

I cannot give this game a zero but by the same token, I cannot give a ten. Originally after giving it an eight, I must reduce my score to a seven based on other factors of playing a new game plus.

Graphics are great, sound is amazing, and game-play is fun. The story is where it falls short for me. It feels messy and I just couldn't buy in. There are plenty of intense moments to experience and a lot of the good elements from the first game are here and better. I guess it just depends on the player on whether or not they’ll enjoy this story line.

Ideally, I look forward to playing video games, this was a game that felt like an uphill battle to finish. There were a couple of stand-out sequences throughout the adventure, but there wasn't one character, I really liked or cared about in this game.... yes... that's even true of Ellie. Moving on to the graphics, of course, Naughty Dog knocks it out of the park here! The graphics are outstanding! But the story..... oh man :-( So, why am I giving this game a 7? Because it made me feel things. It made me angry, frustrated, scared... it made me feel things in a AAA game, I haven't felt before and the graphics and game play, are excellent. One last thought I realized today as I was playing "Ghost of Tsushima." For me, TLOU2 was not fun! Not at all. It was a chore to finish and I had to force myself through it. Ghost of Tsushima, is fun and I find myself anxious to play again during times I need to be responsible... like, ya know... working for a living. I'd much rather have fun playing video games than being stressed out about it. I never want to play TLOU2 again. Once, is enough. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disappointed by how the writers treated the two titular characters would be an understatement. I especially did not like playing as Abby, a character I had no motivations to like for obvious reasons, especially towards the end when you play her to "defeat" Ellie. During this scene, I was like WTF? I about just rage quit the game during the quick time event where it tells you to basically choke out Ellie during this scene. So, basically I played as Abby for 12+hrs not caring two **** about her or her motivations and had to deal with a bad revenge story on top of it. Gameplay was fine, obviously graphics were great. That alone doesn't make a game what it is. I'm sorry for Ellie and Joel.

Update: After having some time to marinate and self reflect on my thoughts I've raised my score. Do I like the story? No. Do I respect the game developers? Yes. Am I devastated by the direction they went? Yes. I raised my the score due to the impressive rope physics haha. Now, will I happily play this game again? Probably not. There was a lot of impressive set pieces in the game, but the story killed it for me. So, final update. Thanks.

Final Update: Year later - I have had a chance to play the game again. I've settled down some on the director's choice/approach. I definitely see the game as a technical achievement and I can see the amount of time put into the game. The game is difficult to replay given the outcome of events. In our own pandemic, I felt closer to the story this time around and for that, there was some kind of solace or acceptance of the inevitable this time around. I hope Part 3 comes so we can find out what happens to Ellie, not so much Abby.

I personally didnt like the gameplay from the first game thinking it was too simple, and this game does nothing to change my mind about that. Secondly, while the story isnt as bad as other people have said on here, its not that great either. Without spoilers its hard to say why but certain characters motivations dont strike me as believable at points, with the most obvious wrinkle happening mid game that almost lost me completely. It feels like the game goes out of its way to bash you over the head with its themes of how "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" over and over again that it losses all meaning in the end. And it certainly cant make up for the most obvious dumb decision that happens in the middle of the game. However, the story still holds up ok at the end of the game. The performances of each individual character is wonderfully done, even if the writing cant equal up to the same calibur. And the graphics here are probably tied in my opinion with Ghosts of Tsushima as being the best on the console, and of this generation in general. However the story needed to be alot less heavy handed and include a lot less bad WTF moments throughout the story. I'd still recommend it but dont expect the same gaming world changing impact that the first game had. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start this off by saying the first part was incredibly overhyped, it had only two highlights: main characters and graphics. The story itself was nothing to write home about (still, better than average), but the relationship development between the characters made it worth experiencing. Gameplay was honestly abysmal for such a highly rated game.

It's pretty much the same thing here, vastly improved, but still very basic gameplay, truly amazing graphics. However, the story-characters situation is reversed, the story itself is very good, but characters are often very sappy, stupid, tendentious and, quite often, boring. Though I admit I liked the universally hated Abby, she's the only one with any real development.

It's hard to convey what I mean by that and keep it short, it's also really not worth it since prolly no one will read it anyway, apart from resident SJWs and fanbois who will downvote it to hell, but I'll try.

I'll focus on the bullet points I brought up previously with a few examples, keeping it light on spoilers, mostly referring to minor details present in the game (which are the main way that they're trying to send THE MESSAGE through).

*So, about a fourth into the game you're playing as Ellie, trekking through a city with Dina, discussing how they're going to own a farm, sheep and so on, even though mere seconds ago they nearly fell into multiple traps, fought LOADS of enemies and they're going through hostile territory. The perfect moment for making future plans and showing THEY'RE ALSO HUMAN.

*Later on, Abbynator teams up with a trans boy, Lev, who journeys to his mother, who rejected him because of her traditional beliefs, to make her accept him being trans. They quarrel, he kills her by accident, his sister comes up to him and tells him it was self-defense. So it's ok to force others to accept that you're trans, sound logic.

*Overall, Abbynator, while being the best character IMO, has some tendentious moments as well. She crushes all the puny men in her way, most of the time they don't have a chance against her. Of course, she also gets crucified by the end of the game, along with her little trans martyr and refuses to fight Ellie. And pulverizes everything with her bare fists, she no need baby man tools.

*Only women are capable of forgiving.

*Apart from Abby's father (who's dead), there's not a single positive white or black male character in the game, all of them turn into **** at one point or another. There are positive males though, so there's that.

*Good uncle Tommy, which always did right by Ellie, at the end forces her to seek revenge. Makes perfect sense, especially in the light of him previously trying to trick her into staying home so she wouldn't go out.

*Two tiny, but STRONG women are going around lifting, by the look of it, 300 pound (or maybe even more) doors all by their lonesome. This is a very minor and gamey detail, but it's just so ridiculous that I couldn't omit it.

That should suffice, the game is chockfull of moments like these, which take away from the experience IMO and could've been done better, especially with the game relying so heavily on it's story.

Also regarding what all the fan bois are raving about, that is Abbynator terminating Joel and her whole story arc, it's hard to sympathize with her knowing Joel's motivations and the way Fireflies received him after going through all his toils in the first game, but she couldn't have known that and is fitting for her character.

With all that said, the plot itself has some weak points as well, like cheap overreliance on romantic and sexual relations between characters and cheap drama.
In one case, extremely cheap, backed by bad writing. I'm thinking of the scene in which Ellie and Dina go to a theater where Dina explains she's shocked with Ellie's immunity, only to reveal few sentences later that she's pregnant. Instant drama. This scene imitates **** movies so hard it's hilarious, it would be acceptable if Dina was established as a drama queen but she's not and it makes no **** sense whatsoever.

And of course, it's far from being original, while the first game was an amalgamation of different stories with some original bits and pieces, this is a straight up old school western, with a clearly biased modern social commentary tacked on.

To sum it all up, good game; average story; basic, linear gameplay that only serves as a bridge between parts of the story; worth experiencing if you've got a PS4 or have a mate with one and a lot of time on his hands (this game is LONG and drags on because of the poor gameplay). They should really be making movies instead of games.

Edit: Oh, and it's excruciatingly boring, combat is fine, has a good feel to it, but stealth has no depth and it's unfortunately the better option most of the time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What makes a game truly good is if you enjoyed it thoroughly. A good game should be equal parts amazing gameplay and amazing story. Naughty Dog has knocked it out the park again with the Last of Us Part 2 with amazing, fun, and addictive gameplay. But where it fails with its over-ambitious story. It's far too long. Worse yet it runs roughshod over the protagonists of the original game. Joel is retconned as a selfish murderer and Ellie becomes a vengeful vixen. Neil Druckman and his fellow writer Halley Gross brings us an extremely conflicted girl power-driven, social justice laden, white men are bad, white women are great, lesbians are even better game. While I love complicated games and protagonists who are woefully human, hate sequels that do not honor the stakes of what came before. Joel's decision to save Ellie at the end of the original games was not because Joel was a heartless villain, it was because he came to love Ellie as a daughter. His saving Ellie was a sacrifice on his part, not a selfish act. He knew there would be no coming back from what he did, yet he did it anyway to save his daughter. Yet in this game we are presented with the wrongheaded belief what Joel did to save Ellie was wrong, not only wrong but that he deserved a brutal, ignoble, and painful death at the hands a superior ALPHA Women. During her quest for revenge Ellie becomes the villain and Abby is painted as the hero. A bold choice, yes, but amazingly wrongheaded. It's like making a movie from the daughter of a Nazi point of view as she seeks justice for her father who was executed rightfully by Jewish vigilantes for his war crimes. "Child murder" is never okay even if the action of murdering a child has the potential to save billions of lives. Sometimes a sequel should never be made. This was one of those times. Expand

Good game gameplay wise. If you like the game play of the first its much the same with a few new abilities. It's a step up graphically and has a lot more combat animations. The story wasn't as good as the original imo but it's still a pretty decent game. Nothing ground breaking just modest upgrades from the original. Game of year contender? I'll reserve judgement until cyberpunk 2977.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In its own right, TLoU2 is a good, maybe even very good game: beautiful graphics, stunning lightings, very dark (I love dark!), unforgiving, disturbing, a gritty revenge story, ... The game mechanics which worked fine in the previous ones are the same, with a few welcome new ones.

As a stand-alone game, I would have given it an 8 or even 9. But TLoU2 isn't its own game .., but the sequel of one of the, if not THE, best game ever. And as a sequel, IMO it fails to reach the perfection of its predecessor.

As must have been spoiled already everywhere, Joel dies by the end of the intro. In itself, it was a shock, a sad and dark (did I mention I love dark?) surprise. But that doesn't mean it has to be a bad idea. Just like in GoT or the Walking Dead, killing main & beloved characters is an excellent way to bring the player into the story, and is a very powerful triggering factor for the main storyline. Much more than the death of another "close" character which we would just have discovered (Dina, Jesse, even Tommy). Kudos to the writers for the guts to pull such a move!

But courage alone doesn't always pay off. One hour into the game, we are left with only half of what made Part 1 so good: the evolving relationship between Ellie & Joel. And in the next 20 or so hours of play of Part 2, nothing or no one will fill the void left by Joel's removal from the game. We don't care a second about the new character (Dina, Jesse, Yara, Lev, ...) and certainly not Abby, Joel's killer whom we play for almost half the game. I think the only supporting cast member which the game really makes likable is ... Alice. At least that's the only one who's death (afterward) saddened me.

Never do we reach the emotional heights of Part 1, although we sometimes have a glimpse of it in some flashback scenes about ... how Ellie & Joel's relationship soured over the years between 1 and 2 because of Joel's secret (lying to Ellie about what happened in the Fireflies' hospital). And that made me wonder how THAT story would have made a much better Part 2 than what we got. Joel could have been killed (after all, his whole storyline is one of redemption), although much later into the game, even by Abby as a playable character. At least, had we been playing Abby for some ten hours BEFORE the murder, knowing her background, maybe we could have liked her and been torn between her and Joel in a duel that would leave one dead. I understand that the writers wanted us to contemplate both sides of the story, but literally forcing us to play Abby (whom I wanted to see dead from Joel's murder to the finale scene) AFTER she killed Joel didn't work. At least for me ...

Another issue I had was the game's length. It is too long. OK, most of the levels are superb, but in most cases, the pace of the game feels like "go clear that level and come back to base camp to move on with the story", while in Part 1, the story unfolded both within gameplay phases AND cutscenes. Besides, although beautiful, several levels felt too far-fetched, more at home in Tomb Raider (burning village), Uncharted (skyscraper's walkway), or even Resident Evil (looking at you, hospital basement's boss). Every time a character said "it isn't far", I knew some floor will crumble under my feet and throw me into some dark (I love dark, btw) basement just for the sake of lengthening the journey.
I would have loved shorter levels, but more focus on character development and storyline.

To conclude, I would strongly recommend that game as a much better & darker (really, I love that) version of Uncharted or Tomb Raider, to anyone who hasn't played Part 1.
But I would warn Part 1's veterans that they will surely be HUGELY disappointed by this game as a much less well-written sequel to its near-perfect predecessor.

I mean if you consider your expectations after the first game. And, truth be told, no one knew what would happen, right? the plot was really open ahead of us. the only plot hanging there was how and when Ellie would learn about Joel's making.
maybe that's why people are so mad about this one. They expected something else (me included, don't get me wrong) but, hey, it's not like this game is THAT piece of garbage as everyone's saying.
The major problem for me is that expectation hanging there.
If this was the first game of a serie it would be fantastic. that's why in my head i gave this one two separete ratings. For the game as a sequence it's 6 or even lower. It was a bold move, what they've tried on the plot, but bold moves can go wrong, and when they do it will probably be twice as catastrophic.
I hate how little they let us play as Joel, hate how terrible of a person they portraited Ellie in the game, hated how much they forced us to like Abby (I'M SAYING THAT EVEN THO I LOVED ABBY. They just didn't have to pushed the palyer so hard toward liking her. It wasnt subtle at all) and if it was a movie, the oscar of the worst editting would fit it perfectly. Swaping between Ellie and Abby was too much, and too often, etc. Thats the thing, again. the expectation. What we wanted to happen. And I'm not even saying dont kill Joel (or any other character) but it wasnt respectful. It wasnt well done. It was dumb. Like a n obvious excuse for the plot.
We had one game, one DLC and years and years of knowing and loving Ellie and Joel. I dont think anyone expected this, and I can'1t imagine anyone from Naughty Dog to think about this idea as good. (except "the head" behind it, probably)
IDK, i'm sad about the game. and not the sad I'd like to be if the story was better writen.
again, if it was a new IP, it would be an 8, maybe 9.
as the sequal to one of the best games ever, I can't rate it more than 7

So before writing this review I wanted to take my time, digest & think about the whole thing. I did not want to rush in and review this in the heat of the moment out of the fear of acting on impulse and giving a biased score. I'm going to try and be as objective as possible, so buckle up for the ride.

Let's start on a positive note:
The game definitely does not deserve anything below a 6/10 or 6.5/10 however bad you may think it is. The improvements over the first game are very noticeable not only graphics-wise but also from a gameplay and audio standpoint.
The graphics are probably the first thing you'll notice when booting the game up. Naughty Dog always delivers top-notch graphics for however long they've been releasing games on Sony's consoles. They are top dogs (pun intended) in the industry along with very few others such as Rockstar when it comes to attention to detail, illumination, effects, droplets of rain on character's skin, the tracks you leave behind in the snow and everything else that makes games visually pornographic.
The gameplay: chef's kiss; the animations are smooth, transitions blend in so seamlessly when you're changing direction, walking, jogging, sprinting, jumping, crawling, shooting, reloading, diving, swimming or swinging. I simply have no words to describe how good the gameplay actually is and the game should be played at least once for this reason alone! it really is THAT good.
The music is also on par with the first game. Gustavo Santaolalla's magic... Nothing less of excellent. The tunes for this game contribute so much to the atmosphere whether you're in a cutscene, in combat or exploring. The gameplay audio, ranging from the sounds of the guns shooting, breaking glass, walking on snow or stepping in puddles to hearing that blood gushing out when you slice someone's neck with the switchblade. The voice actors also did more than an outstanding job.
In short this is a very polished game and you can see that the delays have been put to good use. Trying to find faults from a technical aspect, (not that they don't exist) is, most of the time, almost like trying to find the needle in the haystack.
Something that I noticed that wasn't as perfect was the A.I. The enemies are now so much more intelligent, they try to flank you in numbers, they check their angles and occasionally watch their back to see if someone is sneaking up on them. The only flaw I noticed is the friendly A.I.: they will act like sitting ducks sometimes and sometimes they sprint right into the face of the enemies while they are screaming: "Where did they go?!" and that is a bit immersion breaking... After beating the game on Survivor (hardest difficulty at the point of me writing this) I can truly say that the A.I has improved by a lot, even though there is still way to go.
During my gameplay I did not use Listen Mode as it would, in my eyes, make the game too casual to play. I won't judge/rate this feature.
There are enough infected battles, some new types as well that have their own "special abilities" and all the returning infected have been overhauled and improved upon: Runners are so much more aggressive now, Stalkers are more terrifying than ever etc. Dogs are also a new addition and bring out new ways on how the player decides to approach certain situations.

I would like to delve deeper into some of the things I mentioned but I also have to dedicate some words to what I didn't fully like, the thing that brings this game down to a 7/10 (at least at this point of me writing this review). The goddamn story, yes. You know this moment was coming. Actually not the whole story, but a big chunk of it that would take the score down by so much. If you haven't played the game yet, proceed with caution, some MAJOR SPOILERS be lurking ahead. Here we go:

First off, let me say that Joel dying isn't the problem... It's the way Joel died, the way he went and how we reached that moment was so out-of-character and more than disrespectful towards the protagonist of the first game. People find all sorts of excuses but sorry, I don't buy any of them.
Getting over that tragic moment is all fine and dandy, until about half-way through the game when the game flashbacks after a major cliffhanger. After that you are forced to play as Abby (Joel's killer) who is the daughter of the surgeon that was supposed to operate on Ellie and which Joel killed in the first game. ND tried to shove her ~15 hours long backstory down our throat and make us like/empathize with a character who we despised literally a couple hours in the game. Just no.
The ending is even more underwhelming, after failing to get revenge the first time, after killing hundreds, the death of Joel, other characters & including losing her friends before reaching this point Ellie decides last second not to kill the person who wronged her.

P.S.: The multiplayer i loved in Part 1 won't be out for who knows how long. Big L in my eyes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm pretty conflicted about this game. The whole first half is a solid 9.5/10 for me and really does feel like a worthy successor to the first game. Incredible level design, great combat sequences, and graphic quality I never expected to see out of my 6 year old PS4. I was thoroughly engaged in the story up until the switch.

The second half however, feels very jarring compared to what is played up until that point. It feels like Naughty Dog divided into two teams to make this game. The team developing the first half being people who worked on the original game. the combat encounters feel like they were designed by a less talented team than Ellie's section of the game. The story of Abby and her friends is not interesting and the game gives me no reason to care about those characters.

I do appreciate a lot of what this game tried to do in the bigger picture. The idea of having to play a character for 10-12 hours that you are strongly predisposed to dislike is an interesting psychological experiment, but I kind of wish I wasn't the subject. The Abby section wasn't all bad (I liked her Flashbacks and thought the leaving the Island sequence was very cool) but I still kind of feel like like I was tricked into being forced to play a different game for 10 hours to see the conclusion of the story I was invested in.

I think the Abby section would be less grating on people if it wasn't so long. It didn't feel like it was at all necessary for her to have a whole second campaign to tell that part of the story. Her 3 days could have been an hour each and still showed the player what they needed to see. By the time I was finally done the Abby section it felt like it had killed the tension that was there before the Abby switch.

By far my favorite part of this game was the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie. I don't think Joel's death was necessarily bad writing but i still can't help but wonder what this game could have been if it was able to take more advantage of it's greatest strength in the chemistry between those characters.

I would give this game a 7, definitely not worth a 10, everyone needs to recognize that there are actually legitimate problems with this video game and they were not called out by critics. The enemy AI is painfully dumb even on hard, at one-point Dina squats down in a doorway at the knees of an enemy, he didn't see her and couldn't move through the doorway because of her. This just breaks the world and indeed drags you out of the immersion in a bad way. The combat system gets a bit tedious after repeatedly dodging and mashing the square button or creeping up behind an enemy and choking them out repeatedly, not to mention the jump button only works in certain areas.

A narrative breaking moment is getting Joel to forget all his survival skills by giving out is real name to Abby, this totally contradicts Joel's character from the first game. I derived no joy from playing Abby for nearly 10 hours, I had no investment in this character whatsoever and she overburdened the story in a needless way. I'm sure Naughty Dog once said that you only get to play as Ellie, that is quite deceitful of them and no wonder reviewers were not allowed to speak about certain parts of the game. All I wanted to do for those 10 hours was get back to playing Ellie.

While the game did display fantastic graphical vistas and some varied combat options Part II lacks the sensitively emotional style that made the original epic such a masterpiece.

The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC user score is 8.1 on metacritic which proves players didn't have a problem will Ellie's sexuality so using Bigotry as an excuse for bad reviews is used as a shield against criticism and contradictory to actual reality. The overwhelming majority of gamers don't care that a character is gay or straight, gamers care about the entertainment value, they care if the game was good and if the game was fun to play.

The game is incredible in almost every aspect, except for the writing and the direction they took the story. The entire time I was playing as Abbey I felt nothing but contempt and loathing and all I could see was Joel's face just before the moment "it" happens. I felt no guilt for hating Abby. The entire time I was playing as Abbey I felt nothing but contempt and loathing and all I could see was Joel's face just before the moment "it" happens. I felt no guilt for hating Abby. I felt the lesson of "revenge is bad" was completely ridiculous because we live in the real world and sometimes revenge isn't bad. Sometimes it's necessary. If revenge was always bad the weak would be trampled upon and the striong would dominate everything. The writing is just terrible and taking the game in this direction was a complete mistake from the gate. All I thought to myself towards the final chapter was "Boy I wish I played this game as Tommy instead". Ellie has literally KILLED hundreds of people in cold blood but she makes a few kills in this game and all of a sudden it effects her to the point she gets sick. Its ridiculous. If someone had done that to the person I loved and I was Ellie I wouldve did everything she did without one shred of mercy or regret. How's this for a moral of a story "YOU REAP WHAT YOU SEW". Man I was very disappointed in this game. I hope they can course correct for the 3rd installment. The main reason this game got a 7 out of 10 from me is that towards the end of the game I almost didn't even want to finish it. I genuinely thought about putting the controller down and turning the game off and never putting it back on and the only reason I bothered to see it through was the time I had already invested in it. Trying to push a mushy "revenge is bad" plot line in a story which takes place in the world these characters inhabit is not only stupid, its nonsensical and illogical. The world they live in is practically fueled by kill or be killed and revenge and survival. You kill or you die. You protect those you love or they die. You make a mistake and people get killed. These are the stakes in a world like the one they live in. To try and pretend like these people have the morality that we do in the civilized and corporate world we live in is just plain dumb. So like I said the game is almost perfect in every aspect EXCEPT for the story and the direction the game is heading in. The animations, the level design, the lighting, the gun play, the detail in the environments is all top notch and something the entire development team should stand tall and be so proud of. The acting and the performances given by the voice actors is superb. Its a damn shame that a couple executives or lead devs on this project turned what should be a gritty, tough as nails, survival and revenge story into a moral lecture about how revnge doesnt solve anything. Whoever decided to go that route with the narritive completely ruined what otherwise was an amazing experience. Its funny when I finished playing the Last of Us Remastered last week all I kept thinking to myself was "They better not **** this up in the sequel", and within 2 hours of playing the sequel I kept thinking "They ****ed it up", lol Expand

    The Bad

    - Slow and boring start. Walking and walking. Wait until the animation ends. Repeat. Typical ND stupid design.
    - Horrible character design.
    - Stupid and non-sense motivation for the story. If the story were better structured, with fewer flashbacks, it might have been more decent. But because of the excessive flashback, it totally break the sense of expectation for me. It's really mediocre.
    - The game tries to be an extension of the first game, but fails miserably.
    - You don't find any other characters, like Bill and Henry, it's like the world of that size is completely empty with other good people trying to survive.
    - The game tries to ignore all the meaning of its own name, putting Ellie's immunity almost oblivious, while creating a narrative for other characters in one of the stupidest ways I've ever seen in a video game.
    - The narrative is a mess. The game tries to justify violence over violence, making you, or at least trying to, become attached to a character, creating justification for your actions - totally unconscionable, considering the nature of the game.
    - Still no infected animals and/or a decent variety of infected

    Conclusion:

The game is still fun to play, but the mess in the story and the direction they went with the game is something that can completely ruin your experience, if you are a big fan of the first game. The first game is all about finding a cure, and you encounter different situations and characters along the way. This game has none of t that, no justification for existing in tha sense. It is just a stage to show how hate and revenge not worth it. Typical. Mess typical.

TLOU was such a perfect microcosm of a phenomenon this was always going to be a tough road for ND.....I enjoyed playing through TLOU2. It took about 29hrs and I took my time to poke around the highly detailed environments. While the core gameplay is very well put together, and the dialogue is excellent here, most of the story beats felt like a miss for me.... I simply couldn't get behind the characters un-darwinian decisions as most of them involve characters in the story making completely unsafe moves that threaten the safetey of their groups and in a post apocalyptic survival situation this felt off...(which is tough given the whole plot of the game banks on the audience routing for the characters need to get revenge at ANY COST). In some ways, having characters carry over from TLOU felt like a crutch and dragged plot pacing down. The story felt at its strongest when it focused on the newer characters for me. Also props to ND for not 'overwriting' the LGBTQ+ characters, TBH it was so well written, I didnt even give it any thought. I cant help but feel the main story beats would have landed better if they had a linear rather than 'chopped up' time line.

It unfortunately and occasionally stumbles due to a tired revenge story, poor pacing, and lack of a multiplayer from the original. I have finished the game the day after release, not necessarily because it was so good but because I wanted to know how it >all unfolded. The game is, as was part 1 back on ps3, a masterpiece in terms of graphics and immersion. The world is beautiful, the fact that all enemies refer to eachother by their first name, call out to those that disappeared because of my actions. It's all great. The combat is a bit more fluent than game 1, and has a bit more options but it basically is the same experience, which is fine by me.

The story is a bit difficult to grade. They have tried to show how hate breeds hate, and how it utterly destroys people. It's an interesting subject to explore, and at times I felt for Abby, the dog Alice, Owen and the kids. But a lot of other sequences I flat out didn't want to play, that feeling amplified to the max when I was actually hunting ellie.. I hated it.
And that's what it boils down to, the intentions of the game aren't bad.. It's an interesting concept to explore but why in this universe, why with these characters. You are built up to love these 2 in game 1, become invested. And in game 2 they both meet devastating ends. Joel beaten to death in a gruesome way and ellie completely mentally torn down brick by brick, physically mutilated. And it just doesn't swing home because of it.. The story doesn't bring satisfaction due to a combination of horror (for horrors sake) and a last act that is so contrived, nonsensical and flat out annoying. I want to love the game, and in all fairness, this game doesn't deserve the rating it gets on here at all, but a game that leans on narrative has to make sure that the narrative pays off... And it just does t. Best moment would be the when you face Tommy and he nearly kills us. Loved it. Rooted for him.

It was easy to believe that these characters that we loved in part 1 were made dumb on purpose and act completly different than you would think if you played the first game 10+ times just to fit the direction of the story.

We lose a character we loved, cuz because the writer suddenly made him a 'dumb old man' that suddenly trust strangers,..etc. and this stuff happens all over the game.

in gameplay, when you are building up Ellie, with skills, weapon upgrades,...etc after 17 hours... you switch characters and you start all the way over again.
It had no gameplay satisfaction to play as Abby. So it could have been more shorter what would improve the overal impression and satisfaction of the game for me.

The story as a whole tries to explore the concept of the endless cycle of revenge and why due to the nature of human beings is quite difficult to break. The killing of a very beloved character (Joel) is justified with decisions made in the past that led to our “new” protagonist to seek revenge for the death of her murdered father, however the idea is poorly executed with dumb actions the character wouldn’t even make in any situation, and thus it leaves aside all the storytelling and character development for him from the previous game.
However, what really made me play all the way through were the astonishing graphics this game has to offer. The gameplay mechanics are pretty entertaining and are actually fun to navigate into.
The ending is pretty lame because it doesn’t fit the whole storytelling from both games. While it tries to justify the decision made by Ellie in not killing the killer of her “father in law”, it does not take into account all the killing that has happened before even though Ellie is completely aware of it. Ironically, the senseless killing all characters committed turned pointless the message of the ending.

Awesome gameplay, graphics and music, 10/10 on that department, the story tho, it is not that great, it is a basic story of revenge, Abby's side of the story is too long and it should not interrupt the flow of Ellie's story like that, it kills the pacing, plus Abby's story has a lot of filler, which make the game suffer. Plus, we can't fully like Abby, she killed Joel, so we will never like her, but at the end I agreed with Ellie's decision, but still playing like a character we do not care about is not fun. It does not deserve the hate it gets, but it surely does not deserve to be called a masterpiece, I give it a solid 7/10, there is worse things with better score, so it should not be that low. Expand

the early part of the game is very similar to the original from a graphical pov and is almost DLC but then it opens up into some of the best graphics ever seen complimented by some fun (and violent) gameplay.

I did like the Abby character and I did start to care about her ...which was amazing, as when she first turned up I was not a happy bunny. I was angry and upset and confused why I was being forced to play as this person...but she won me over. Though the character is overall wasted and fails to do anything interesting. Though I did find her extremely attractive but then I'm weird lol

But the game is too long and has too many false endings for my liking. It does waste your time. And every time Joel and Ellie are together I was angry that this wasn't the game. Those tiny segments are amazing and wonderful and the museum is flawless magic.

I have no idea what is wrong with Neil D (the director) but I feel he hates himself and despises his many of his fans. He is clearly a clever guy and made the WONDERFUL The Last Of us but the man needs to step back and allow others to edit his genius. This game needs a serious edit but not a directors cut haha

ALSO as a LGBT+ person I didn't like THREE bloody LGBT + stories. As it took the power from one story told well to three told poorly. Hell the Lev story was just offensive and unnecessary and clearly written by someone who really doesn't know what he is talking about. Though I applaud their efforts to be different but they end up being tone death as everyone else. Atleast they tried though.

There is an issue which should be a discussion about the ENDLESS reused assets. The sheer volume of enemies who were physically identical became embarrassing at one point. Fighting a wave of identical humans and monsters only compounded the issues with lack of variety and too much repetition. Lazy inexplicable decisions which hurt the game and made it into a repetitive slog at times.

Yes I had some graphical issues and as the game goes on they became worse. I played a large chunk with no arm so that was hilarious but ruined the immersion. Sound and music are solid and the game is long...like way too long haha but def. get your money worth.

It is not a scratch on the original and not much like it and this is a genuine shame. the story is not a good one and it is poorly told. I reminded me of BEYOND 2 Soulz that Quantic Dreams thing. They re-released a version which didn't mess with the chapter order. I feel TLOU2 needs this asap to help make us really care vs being told or manipulated to care.

Overall I give it an 8 for graphics and trying to do something even if it fails but a 7 for wasting alot of potential and good will as well as literally spitting on fans at times. It made me mad...so there is that haha

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You introduce a new character by having them KILL one beloved character right in the first 30 minutes of the game, and then you force us to play as them for dozens of hours... Aren't you guys supposed to sell copies of this? Am I missing something? You made this in order to profit, right?

    This story is a mess.
It goes back and forth with the timeline. That wouldn't be needed if it was done right.

The players wanted to see what happened to Joel and Ellie after the first game.
They knew that they were headed to Jackson, are we were expecting to see something more during their time in Jackson.
Instead of that, we only get a few drawings and words written in Ellie's diary about some previous events that happened in Jackson, and we also get a beloved character with their skull smashed with a golf club in the first 30 minutes of the game, which could be avoided if the writers didn't make the character DUMB and kept it as they were before.

Funny thing about this, is that Naughty Dog needed to have some of their fans to explain why certain characters did certain actions, when THEY should be the ones to do that, by explaining it IN THE GAME.

    [spoiler] :
Abby smashed Joel's skull with a golf club. Abby didn't know how Joel looked like, but knew his first and last name, his age and where he was.
Joel never trusted anybody in the first game and refused to tell his name. In this game, he tells his name in the middle of a group of dozens of people, knowing how many people he has killed in the past.
This is not an "accident". They've made Joel dumb.
The worst part is, many people justify this as "this is what happened when Joel let his guard down".

    This is laughable.

The best part of the story, is the flashbacks (which is around 2 or 3 hours of gameplay). The rest just feels "meh" and predictable. You could tell where the story was going after Joel's death.
The writers made us think that this story would be ground-breaking, and it was you typical revenge story, expect, in the end, you don't kill the villain (for some reason).

For a game that relies heavily on story, the most important part of the game is truly disappointing.

Now let's talk about the rest.
    - The graphics are gorgeous (as expected)
    - The audio is top notch
    - The actors did a tremendous job, despite people not liking certain characters, You can't deny that. Really well done.
    - The accessbility options are something that, hopefully, will become a standard from now on
    - The gameplay is the same as the previous game. There's nothing new to it, besides new weapons and a jump button (which you'll only use it 2 or 3 times because you have to)

There's nothing in the game that makes it a 10/10 game.

It's fun to shoot and kill people and zombies, take photos with the in-game Photo Mode, but that's it.

"Revenge is a fool's game" - You don't need to spend your money on this game to find out something that you could've found out in 2018. Save your money and spend it on things that you really need, specially in these though times.

As someone who initially doubted the plot's worth due to the leaked spoilers, I did not want to give the game a chance. Yet, I did.

From a gameplay perspective, it is definitely an improvement over the first one, graphically it is probably the best looking game I have ever seen.

From a story perspective, although I would have preferred certain fates were handled better, the journey is definitely one that is worth travelling. The leaks definitely misrepresented the plot. It is a gritty story, it does not pull any punches. You will feel very uncomfortable handling certain moments, which I guess is the intention of the director. Nevertheless, I feel like the story does have some pay-off in the end, or at least it leaves it up to a more positive interpretation.

Now, do I believe it is perfect? I wouldn't say so. The Last of Us Part 1 is a focused story around the relationship of these two characters, while Part 2 feels more like a story about the world itself. It attempts to provide a plethora of different perspectives, so that all become, to an extent, sympathetic. However, by having such a broad scale, it does not feel as focused as certain players would appreciate. If I were to contrast the two games, Part 1 feels more like a movie while Part 2 feels more like one, or even two seasons of a show, in regards to scale. It worked for me, but I do admit it felt somewhat long at a certain point, as the last few hours felt dragged on.

Nevertheless, I loved the experience. You can feel the passion behind every single member of the staff, from the animators to the actors that worked on this game. It is NOT an half-assed game.
There were some great emotional moments that I feel will resonate with many players. I felt had my money's worth, but I can understand that the story is not for everyone. Congratulations for the great game, Naughty Dog ;)

I wont lie, the major flaws are the time jumping, character swapping, and the game is a slog for 2/3's of it's length. There are long sections where your AI partner doesn't say anything to keep you engaged (unlike the dynamic Joel and Ellie had in the first entry)
It is very dry, dark, and not "fun" to play but that's part of the plot.

I think my only major dislike is Dina, this is not a happily ever after lesbian story... as Dina is not even really lesbian anyway. Her motives and intentions are not made clear until the final act. She was never meant to be the one for Ellie, and it's pretty noticeable when Jesse arrives at the theatre that Dina likes men more. She's literally a flaky, scummy person.
Do I like the angle? Not really, but once you get the full context. It's tolerable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing the game and getting its platinum. These are my overall review averaged based on 4 categories.

    *Gameplay - 7/10
    - Nothing much had change from the first game. It still has your typical third person cover based shooter and stealth gameplay. There are some added features like a dodge mechanic. However, outside of its smooth execution, nothing changed significantly which could be considered as major improvement. In terms of enemies, there are more stalker sections now compared with the first game. There are two new infected in the game, the first one is the shambler, a more grotesque version of the bloater which does not really differentiate from their inferior version outside of exploding upon the dyng. The other one is the "Rat King" which is a creature connected by multiple stalkers and clickers which is like a boss enemy in the game. In the human side, the only new ones introduced are the dogs which makes the stealth sections more pressure and challenge since they follow your scent continuously unless killed. Despite this new enemies, the game still feels like the previous one and for me nothing felt totally new. The weapon adjustments are also back to the fold with more weapons and items to use which is a positive note. Based on all these, a 7 will suffice.

    *Graphics - 10/10
    - It won't be a Naughty Dog game if it does not give you top of the rank graphics. Every thing you see in the game is top-notched, with precise details and amazing. From the wrinkles, scars, blackheads of each character to the grotesque beings they throw at you and to each place you visit while traversing its universe. A Masterpiece in terms of graphical art.

    *Music/Sound - 10/10
    - Like the previous game, this game also made the perfect execution of quality music and sounds to make the game feel very much alive. Every music that plays are well placed to augment the feeling needed to come out in each of it's cutscenes and gameplay. The sounds of the clickers are very still terrifying and disturbing. The voice acting of its characters are likewise great with its multitude of great actors. Another masterpiece in this category.

    *Story - 0/10
    - Now this is where the game fell flat. Unlike the first game which presented a masterpiece plot and story which will be remembered for years, this game on the other hand, gave a very disappointing and frustrating storyline which will give a long lasting bad taste even from its dedicated fanbase. Not only it disrespected the characters (particularly Joel and gave him the stupidest death ever) they developed, built and established in the first game, it also contradicted itself the revenge story it wants to tell (You kill literally everyone except the one who deserves it, moreover, it forcefully makes you like the antagonist Abby even though there are no likable traits with her). In the character side, the new characters are all one dimensional and forgettable. Moreover, it also showed one of the most cringeworthy and unwatchable scenes in gaming history and the WORST ending in a story driven game (the ugly sex scene and lesbians kissing..sheesh).

    - Honestly, after the Joel death cutscene way early in the game. I was playing half dead but tried to push on through believing to see any saving grace from the game. Sadly, it never came. Not only that, they gave an awful ending to close the game. Although everything is great, the story of the game i felt was the most important factor for me to like the game. But with one of the worst storyline I encountered, this is one of my personal worst game of all time plotwise. Regardless, I tried to be as fair as possible in my scoring. Still, I would not recommend this if story was the first reason you liked in the previous title because this will surely disappoint you due to a lot of writing idiocy.

What made the first game special for me, they showed how a deep connection could come from two complete strangers and it felt real.
In this game they throw in so much into the pot it creates a lot of weird plot holes and even after 30 hours I don't have a single character I really like.

This game turned into kinda... The Walking Dead: The Game. Regardless of what history tells us about how people in war act usually kind and help each other, all main characters in this game are straight up ****

But who knows, maybe you'll surprise me with Part 3 and...subvert my expectations, ba dum tss.

Yes, the story had problems and did stuff without thinking about how much we love and care about the characters but I still enjoyed the game and had fun playing until the end,(although there was a time in the middle of the game where I wanted to stop playing and throw the remote) I continued and kinda understood the risks the developers made..

So much salt on here! I can agree with some of the points people are making, but honestly, its not that bad. I enjoyed it, and you should judge for yourself. Typical revenge story, but I like how they make you feel for each side.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is neither as good nor as bad as people think. A bad narration with some accidentally made good scenes and a dishonorable death of a character. Certain scenes feel very shoehorned and one revelation even suffers from trying to be super politically correct so the prancing around it with the dialogue by the oh so tolerant characters makes it very hard to watch the scene and properly deduce what they want to say because they expect you in the first place to have the same view towards it so it becomes very confusing with its presentation. Normally I am against the "this game is too long" argument but I have to agree. It is not terribly long but it does not fit the game to be as long as it is. Expand

Welp! Writing anything about this game seems extreme. Well, nobody asked me, but here is my take: The Last of Us Part II is a game that probably should have not been made, but we got it anyway, not because the first onw couldn't be topped or improved, or because there wasn't any story to tell, and not even because of the expectations of the fans. We've seen other games with similar circumstances knock it out of the park. At least to me the problem with TLOU Part II is that it seems that it was made without even knowing why. Oh well, first the positives: Graphically, the game is incredible even on an old PS4. The music while a little derivative from the original is also excellent. The voice acting again is absolute superb, and while the combat and puzzles are very much more of the same, they're still well put together and effective. Even the story (as much maligned as it has been) has some very solid and powerful moments, and finally kudos to Naughty Dog for the accessibility innovations, I have to say I'm really impressed.
Now, the bad is quite simply one thing: The story execution and planning. It really seems that the creative team really wasn't sure what to do with the game, because even if you don't like the ideas put into the story, it can still be structured and told effectively. But here? That is where the game really punts it.
All in all, the production still makes this a solid, even good game. But a lot of money, crunching, and good production staff can only take you so far. I really hope this time, this game really will be the last of it.

Finally done and got the platinum. As an initial impression. I honestly found this game disappointing and inferior compared to the first title.

    *Story - 2/10
    - With how the story was TLOU1's greatest strength, this is TLOU2's weakest. First, this game showed one of the worst introduction in the game. It showed out of personality from one of its main characters and gave us one of the most disrespectful deaths you would ever see in a game. It could have been much much better but feels too rushed to cater the devs claim of "shock" factor. Moreover, many of the new npc or side character are uninteresting, awful, stupid and is just introduced in the game as a fodder to increase the meaningless death counts that will happen as you progress towards in the end. Regardless such a mess of a writing uncharacteristic of Naughty Dog. Compared to other previous ND games, this game also has some bad pacing in its story and gave an ending which will make you really feel you wasted your time. Beware!

    *Gameplay - 7/10
    - Showing nothing worthwhile new or fresh, the game is still your typical third person shooter with stealth mechanics. The upgrades are still there as well as the gears and customized gadgets. a few new enemies like the dogs and shamblers were introduced but does not really that significant to be considered improving the gameplay. The fact that the gameplay still feels smooth is the only reason its a 7.

    *Graphics - 10/10
    - Although this does not show really beautiful scenery like RDR2 or God of War, its character details and design is where its strengths are. To repeat every model in this is detailed from head to toe, the wounds, the veins, the dirt and the wrinkles in every body of each of its character can be seen. A beautiful and artistic game indeed.

    *Sound - 10/10
    - The sound, music and voice acting of the game is still top notched. The actors are superb in delivering their speeches, the music is fitting for every place you see in the game (I also really like guitar minigames) and the sound of its signature clicker are still very scary and disturbing.

    Overall - 7/10

Although a still pretty much great game, this game pales in comparison with its first title due to how awful its story is. I don't really mind the diversity of its cast but the execution of its main plot could have been done in different orders which in my opinion could have made the game much much better. Sad that after 7 years this is the game I got. Regardless, it is done and like always, we need to move on hoping the next title will redeem this franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you read the review with spoilers, then you know that the developers killed Joel in the first hours of the game. With this act, the developers caused a loyal fan of the first part of the game a real pain. Sudden and sharp as a stab. But, as if this were not enough, the developers further force the player to look at how Ellie suffers and morally degrades. This brings the player no less pain, but a long and dull one. Like a toothache. And then the players are forced to play for Joel's killer - Abby. They reveal her as a bad person who is struggling to become good. Perhaps this would be a good move if the players did not have such a strong emotional connection with Ellie and Joel. But there is a connection. Therefore, attempts to humanize Abby in the eyes of the player look like a mockery. After all, in parallel with how Abby morally grows, Ellie sinks to the bottom and does terrible disgusting things. It will devastate you. And I think that the developers sought exactly this effect. But for what? To tell a banal story that revenge is bad. About that which causes only revenge and does not give deliverance.
This is a commonplace thought, but this does not mean that this cannot be a topic of conversation. Because it is important. However, if you were going to tell the story of revenge in such a cruel way, then you should have given us the story of Abby, which would have hit the player’s heart as deeply as the story of Joel and Ellie. Then a collision between Elli and Abby's foreheads at the end would be appropriate. But instead, the developers tell us something very mediocre ... The story of Abby is the level of one episode in The Walking Dead. It is interesting, but I do not want my favorite characters to die for this ...
In general, the screenwriter and the director get 3 out of 10 from me.
Out of respect for the workers who worked on the game for 12 hours a day, I will give the game 7. I would give the employees more, because technically the game is almost excellent. But I can not. This is dishonest in relations with Joel, Ellie and their fans.

Actually I would argue, that most people who have played the first game, would call it a "feel good" game, despite the dark universe and the gruesome events the characters had to endure.
The Last of Us Part 2, has no feel-good moments, it goes darker then any game has gone before, and it keep hammering in the same points again and again. Hate generates Hate!

Personal I feel The last of us (1) is one of the best games and stories ever told. I fell the Last of Us part 2, could have been just as awesome a game, if not for the choice to force the story on to characters of the first game. And I hate the game for that.
They could easily fit the story on to new characters, as the initial reason for Hate, is so generic that it does not matter from where it springs.

Do I like the game... definitely! I would especially recommend it to everyone how have NOT played the first game. Not something I've had ever stayed before.
