This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excellent graphics, gameplay and AI but it's countered by worst story telling and pacing in video game history (IMO). Countless unneeded flashbacks at the worst time possible draws you out from the experience. Also getting rid of a cannon character in the very beginning was the worst decision. We expected new adventures with the duo, not a flashback game. Expand

TLOU is indeed a great game, a storytelling masterpiece. this sequel, is another game completely. There are so much better ideas to get a decent story. It's not about only removing the main protagonist from the beginning. It's the how, the when, the why.

I'll start off by saying that I absolutely love the first game and how I could relate to the characters and really put myself in their shoes. This game is not that. The story feels almost forced, like they only made this game because they have to. Second in an absolutely beautiful world with outstanding visuals the world feels shallow. Let's take npc characters for starters, in most modern games if I'm in an area littered with npcs then they tend to interact with me or acknowledge that I exist in the world, but not this game. You never feel like you are part of the world unless it is a triggered event that is designed to push the story further. Also in the first game you really could relate to the characters and the decisions they make because it was always calculated and thought out and this time around those same people are just careless idiots. Also everything just happens to be too convenient like a cheap movie. Then we also take the lack of a multi player mode and how this game just lacks all the heart and soul that you found in the original Last of Us and I feel that this game does deserve all the hate that it is receiving. I honestly can not with a good conscience recommend that anyone who loved the first game play this game, which seems to just piss on all the hard work that the original team put into the game. Expand

While there are shining moments, that usual Last Of Us quality, the overall story and the arc will quickly drop you off, never to pick you up again. It gives you just enough to keep playing, only to result in a journey you wish you never took. Naughty Dog finally dropped the ball. Despite being very solid game in its technology-side, the story should've been the biggest catch especially after Part 1. The user score you see before you is indeed what you get: the fanbase isn't lying.

The gameplay is the same as the first game, with very little improvements from the first game. Basically it looks as if Naughty Dog has a game play template they apply to every game they make. If you line Naughty Dog games for their game play you will line this one. The presentation is superb as always.
However the story is horrible, badly told and i can not give a score of more than 4

The story is best enjoyed if you take it as a very bad joke told by a drunk comedian. It is badly written, horrible from a plot standpoint, filled with bad decisions. It pretensious in the strictest sense. It pretendent to be deep, moving, emotional. Its just bad.

For me the story was the game. Without it, a 6/10 is the most i will give it.

The game chooses to avoid the obvious story that we all expected--the story that would have been more challenging to write due to our expecting it, but much more rewarding if they had the talent to pull it off--and chooses instead to go off and wallow in a grotesque landscape that is like something written for the Onion. I find it hard to believe that Naughty Dog's opinion of humanity is so poor that they would craft such an unbelievable series of events. Like Season 8 of Game of Thrones, they seem to believe that subverting expectations is somehow artistic, when the truth is meeting the expectations (in a sequel) of fans in a creative way is the more difficult task for the artist.

Don't get me wrong. The game is a polished gem. If you loved the gameplay of the first, then you will find much to love here. Combat and exploration, the visuals, and the world itself are expertly rendered and beautiful, even while also terrible. That they put great effort into the game goes without saying and nobody should take that away from them. If you're a fan of the Last of Us due to the gameplay and combat, you are in for a real treat.

If, however, you were fans because you loved Joel and Ellie, and because you wanted to see what Naughty Dog would do with their relationship--Joel having lied to her to her face, and Ellie suspicious and, thus, her love of Joel tainted by doubt--then you will be disappointed. Bitterly so. It seems like such an opportunity wasted. Surely they could have made the same diversity decisions that delight Twitter-activists while telling us a story that we actually wanted to know about. In hindsight, seeing Joel in that commercial on television seems a bit cruel and misleading.

To summarize, this game continues the recent fad of subverting our expectations by failing to give fans those elements that made their art so attractive in the first place while wallowing in the negativity they see in the world, like a teenager who first encounters goth and thinks they've had an epiphany. As a technical work it is truly astounding and a game worthy of purchasing, if only to reward the actual artists and programmers who obviously poured their hearts out into this game, but if you were a fan of the original you probably won't enjoy it.

Is art supposed to be enjoyable? Maybe not in every case. But if we're talking about a video game, then, yes, I think it is supposed to be enjoyable. Call me old fashioned that way. 4 out of 10 for story. 9 out of 10 for the gameplay itself.

Graphics are stunning, sure, any game on rails is going to be good looking, but it's far from the best looking game this generation as some have claimed on this website.
Story? Hmm... Not going to dump any spoilers on here but what a massive disappointment that was, Ellie acting out of character, various plot-holes and a very unsatisfactory ending.
Gameplay is very similar to the first one minus the environment puzzles, in that it's extremely shallow with bland "stealth" mechanics attached.

I would recommend you spend your hard earned cash else-where, preferably into Cyberpunk 2077, or Vampire Bloodlines 2 at the end of the year, while the game is certainly not a "0" it's most CERTAINLY not a 10/10, or a 100/100 (This is what's considered a perfect game from the media... yeah, if you believe that then I got a bridge to sell you).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I saw the user score at first I thought it was review bombing. I played the game, the graphics and animations are the best I’ve ever seen in a video game. The story is the worst, it is like they dumbed down the characters we love from the first one. The plot armors are countless to keep some characters alive and kill some characters off pointlessly to steer the story the way they want to term the story as unpredictable or bold. You can see where the story is going and why Joel was killed right from the start because he was talking about that incident at the start of the game with Tommy. The story was not interesting. Not to mention it is false advertising by showing Joel and replaced him with Jesse in the game. Ellie killed hundreds of people to get to Abby then unable to kill her because revenge is bad? Well, she killed tons already, why not kill her too that’s the one responsible. This game sucks. Expand

The game is a “visual masterpiece” but that’s as far as the masterpiece goes. The game play adds nothing to the formula from the first game except a jump button that is only used a handful (if that) of times in the game. I enjoyed the first game despite it's game play, not because of it. That was due to the compelling story and incredible writing and character building.

The Last of Us 2 completely ignores the characters built in the first game. It also makes the story in the first game completely irrelevant. Characters behave out of character. One of the major story points that happens within the first couple hours only happens because a character does something this character would NEVER do as established in the first game. It’s an utter disgrace and ruins the character. Sadly this is the sole driving force of the entire game. Not only is the plot point created by this event the main focus of the game and story but it is also repeated twice. It’s the most basic thing I’ve ever seen and to make matters worse it is written very poorly. It’s bad enough to run with a ridiculous concept but I’d you are going to you better darn well get the writing and characters right. This game does neither. The characters are boring and not compelling and the writing is that of something I would have written before I got into middle school.

The “poignant” moment at the very end was just laughable. I mean literally. I laughed out loud. If you like this game then good for you. I’m not faulting anyone’s opinion. My as for me I say shame on Naughty Dog For releasing this garbage. By the way none of my review has anything to do with politics, ethics, wholeness etc... although all that trash is in the game too and would stop my score even more.

The combat is good enough to carry you through a great story except there isn't a great story. This isn't the Witcher 3... you wont come out with fond memories and characters you'll love and cherish for all time. Instead you'll be frustrated about the direction characters take and hate all the characters involved. By the end you'll probably wonder why you wasted your time here with these terrible people. There won't be a 10 year anniversary video for The Last of Us 2 like the Witcher 3 got. You'll be ready to move on immediately to wash the taste out of your mouth.

As time has gone on I only hate the game more and more. So much so that my original score of 6 makes me angry. I can't give technical accomplishments in graphics that much of an impact when my feelings are so negative to the game. Moving my score from mixed to negative.

The poor gameplay experience really is one of the game's key faults, as games are supposed to be fun and engaging, not glorified walking and stealth sims. The other fault is the story. Although it is not as terrible as others claim in my opinion and the LGBT representation represents a social leap forward for gaming as art, certain specific decisions as to the direction of the story itself are not effective, although understandable as to what they were made. The set up works, but everything else falls to crap after the first half. The graphics, sound design and acting in this game is on another level. It's incredible to actually see this kind of graphical fidelity on such old hardware (I have a regular first gen PS4). The sounds are well captured and immerse you more into the environments of the game. The acting is top notch and worthy of an academy award.

The gameplay is largely the same as its predecessor, with the addition of jumping and going prone to explore the landscape. Melee combat now has a dodge mechanic, which can make those tense showdowns a little easier to manage. I do find getting melee kills in this game a bit too easy though, as you don't have the same depreciating craftable weapons from the first game. I also find it disappointing that you can't pick up a fallen enemy's weapon, which kills some aspect of realism as well as emergent gameplay.

The story and characterization is where I'm truly divided with the game. I expected certain deaths here and there, but I believe it was executed poorly. The narrative is also very confusing with all the flashbacks and timelines. I think they tried to take the Pulp Fiction route in changing up the timeline of events and trying to make it self-referential, but it ended up being a convoluted mess in my opinion. There is also a large section of the game where it switches up the character you play as, and although I enjoyed certain aspects of the character, I could not resonate with the character on a personal level like I could with Ellie. It seems like the narrative is torn on who they want to portray as the protagonist of this game, and it really makes a mess of things from the eyes of the viewer.

Even worse is as I continue playing as the new character, I can feel myself slowly losing interest in playing the game and have to force myself to complete it. The game's pacing takes a bad turn here and becomes another conspicuous problem for the game. In the previous game, the banter between Joel and Ellie kept things interesting at least. Here, I was dragged out in long sections by myself, and even when I did have a companion, I did not find them interesting.

TLOU2 was a game I was really looking forward to, and while it really shined as an achievement in aesthetics and acting, the game's narrative, characters, and pacing really weigh down everything great about it. Had TLOU2 not been such a story and character-focused game, those issues wouldn't have been much of a problem. But as it stands, the game feels like wasted potential, and that pains me a lot to say that because I really loved the first game and had high hopes for this one.

Maybe I was biased against it, after all, it isn't only a console game, but a Sony product, and due to a few scandals at Sony and its subsidiaries I wouldn't buy a Sony product even if it would be near perfect. Maybe I was biased against it, because I have seen gameplay videos and seen some pretty lazy writing that made the game weaker, and the only kind of action games I enjoy are the ones that come with a good story.

Maybe. But with all the nice graphics and audio, they have spent a lot of money on elements that were important in a lot of games I have played, and those games just didn't age well. They have spent a lot of money on aesthetics that would be surpassed in next-generation, even at lower costs. Yet in the writing, I have seen some cheap tricks. When someone who will at other places enjoy hurting others (and acting like a psycho) just happily playing with dogs to build sympathy that is cheap and bad writing.

Normally honest critics tend to spot such problems, but when they want to be on good terms of powerful publishers, they quickly forget how to spot that. Or they forget their integrity. If they would promise me a rather average game, with the somewhat badly written story and amazing graphics, I would feel satisfied and happy. But as both Sony and crooked reviewers promised a masterpiece it was a disappointment.

Just before I would stop feeling disappointed, there was always some minor or not so minor issue that refreshed this bad feeling. And overall we don't buy or play games to feel disappointed by them.

But as a gamer who enjoys subscription services like Origin Access or XBOX Game Pass that come with many games, I would say if they were honest about it and would promise a mediocre game, it wouldn't be much worse than a random game in the vault.

It wouldn't be much worse than "fan favorite" games like FIFA 2020 from EA Sports. That game is also unpopular for some reasons, but in that cases, EA makes a game for their fans, players and know we want them to spend all the money and even more (from MTX) on having good models of players, venues, etc. and they spend a lot in the graphics department, and we have to accept the not so slightly outdated gameplay.

The Last of Us 2 spent a lot of money on amazing graphics, really. Too bad that players who enjoy the franchise were attached to characters like Joel and mourn their loss. That anger combined with disappointment over the game is pretty loud on the Internet. I couldn't care less for Joel. Sony lost me when they had their rootkit issue, when they mishandled data breaches, when they betrayed the trust of customers repeatedly and acted all entitled about it. So there was no way for me to care about Joel. But it looks like Sony forgot the fact they should make their products for their customers.

Why? Because they knew they can get away with it. People will buy The Last of Us 2, they will buy Playstation 5, and at the end of the PS5 era, they will buy a game that will be twice as bad as The Last of Us 2. In the end, they don't lose customers there, and they will be able to sell a few Bravia TVs to the "brave" leftish "social justice" warriors, whose bravery ends when they aren't protected from negative opinions by their mob mentality and their safe spaces.

it is a game that just represents Sony so perfectly...

People who consider this being a "masterpiece" haven't seen much in recent media. Stop acting like TLoU2 is bringing something new to the table. It's an overused plot and poorly executed one. Neil Druckmann believe he's George R.R. Martin, but he's D&D.

The game tries to MANIPULATE you all the time into thinking about the other side of the matter, into make you believe that there is no good and evil. It makes a tremendous effort to compare a brutal and slow murder of and unnarmed and defenseless man to the kill of a man armed with a scalpel that was trying to kill a little girl.

This thing, again, is FULL OF PLOT HOLES.

It's just a **** revenge story that has no end. And in the end you don't care anymore because the writting is bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU2 visually and cinematically is a masterpiece and unfortunately that's about as far as it goes in the end.

The gameplay is well honestly it didn't do much to change or enhance what was already present from the first game in any meaningful way. Sure its smooth, can be fun and of course well done for what it is but that was to be expected I would think.

This game franchise from day one for me has always been about the story.

Unfortunately I found this story to be very poorly paced and delivered the big moments in a way that even though you want to sympathize with the characters involved you just can't because the new characters didn't get the same treatment and ND storytelling magic (That use used to be known for) that Joel, Tommy and Sarah got in the first game where in the first 20 minutes you went through so many emotions and it left you crying like a baby before the game actually even starts. Because of that and the fact that the big moment happens so quickly you have almost no time to build a true emotional bond with the new characters and all you can do is hate them and every action the game forces you to take there after all the way up to the end where the payoff is nil of any meaning to all that came before. It's not a good or unique revenge story in the end if anything it pushes the revenge to long and too hard for the ending to be what it was. It's not even unique to a world where half the population are now fungus zombies and saddest of all they take a backseat to the entire story of this game and might as well not even exist.

Never played the first part, Joel dying didnt bother me much, and in the end I actualy liked Abby more than Ellie, she had more character and likeability. I also liked how the game tells us that there is no good or evil, its about perspective. But the story seemed a bit pointless, in the end no one gets what they want, nothing was achieved. And the SJW stuff was way too much, it hit the bar when telling us that Levi identifies as a man. Why do such a thing to a 13 year old girl? I mean she is living in a insane tribe and the world ended, who would care. Very few characters I liked aswell, Abby, Owen and Tommy was my favorites, the rest didnt care. -The Good/Great:
-Environments/Sound/Physics/Tech Art was the best I have seen in a game. An unbelievable masterpiece. You should all be proud. The Art Director and team deserve a medal.
-The inclusion of diverse characters. Well done. I applaud you. My favorite character was Trans-gendered and it's nice to see.

    The Bad:
-Gameplay. There is a lot to write about here. The gameplay was one of the worst parts of the game. Overall, the level of violence was too much.
-Game Design. This is the same game mechanic as Drake's/The Last of Us/Day's End... For goodness sake let me pick up more than 9 (that's right NINE) bullets. Ridiculous. There are many other ways of ensuring a player can't horde bullets. Lazy.
-Story. There is a lot written about this so I won't' rehash all of this here. The characters weren't true to who they were in the first game. As an example, there is no way Tommy would have pushed Ellie to go find Abby at the end after Ellie had settled down (this was Tommy's whole motivation for creating a community!!). And he certainly wouldn't have said "well I can't go". BS. One example of dozens.
-And my worst gripe: Abby. This was handled so poorly. I absolutely detested playing this character for what she did to Joel... and that was half the game! If you want to understand my score, that is the major part.

Here's the key take-away: PLAYABLE CHARACTERS NEED TO BE LIKEABLE. You need to connect with them on some level and Abby was a dispicable character... DO NOT MAKE 'The Last of Us 3' WITH ABBY AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER !!!!!!!!!! That will ruin the game. Period.

    Good luck.

Neil Druckmann, a white cis male, has filled a franchise loved by millions with trans phobia, homophobia, pedophilia and porn.

Neil Druckmann's writing, is the reflection of a deeply disturbed heterosexual individual that wallows in self hatred because of his secret rape fantasies for trans women and his pepophile tendency. The hatred for strong male characters is evident throughout the 25 hours of this gore filled surreal nightmare.

Looking back at the First game and the DLC, you find mature and logical storytelling, a lovely romance between Ellie and her female lover and most importantly characters you want to identify with.

Anyone that can identify with any of the characters in this game should seek professional help. There is no redeeming qualities in anyone and you are forced to murder hundreds of people, not zombies, in a psychopathic manner driven by hate and anger.

Congratulation Naughty Dog, you made your hetero-normative white girl, who is built like a dude, and her ex-boyfriend, a white male, your most compelling characters of the game.

Why do I rate this game 4/10? Because the protagonist, Ellie, is an utter bore and really a terrible person. That's fine if this is by design, but that is what impression she gives me. As much as I hate Joel's death, and that particular scene is pretty awful, and I don't just mean uncomfortable to watch, I mean the setup was lazy.

They say in fiction that the protagonist is the one who changes the most. Well, then your protagonist is Abby. Abby has a classical arc. She does a heel-face turn and shows some genuine heroic capacity. Ellie is angry and bitter the whole time, and her dialog with Dina is cringe-y. Whereas Abby has good conversations that move her character forward. Ellie and Dina just exchange YA romance novel bromides about their love. No hetero character in the history of gaming has ever obsessed as much about their love interest as in this game. It is mind-numbing. So that takes away a number of points.

The next big reason is that ND does an incredible job at rendering a post apocalyptic Seattle, but the game mechanics feel like they are stuck in 2013. Most of the lore has no depth. The war between the WLF and the Scars is filler, and is just there to provide two factions so that the co-protagonists have someone to kill other than the inexplicable number of infected that run around in a war zone. There are quite a few times when you think, "This just makes no sense."

There are a couple good infected moments, however, including one in the hospital basement that i particularly liked, but it was there for "boss" value, not because it was born out of story. So those are my reasons it didn't rate higher, terrible Ellie arc and dated gaming mechanics. Also, the scenes that take place after Seattle are terrible, and further my opinion that Ellie is just a terrible person.

I also enjoyed the first The Last of Us game, mainly based on the characters, story and world. Sadly, I can't say the same thing about the The Last of Us Part 2.

The Last of Us Part 2 has destroyed the franchise for me. I did not like what they did with the characters and narrative. And, unfortunately, I never thought the gameplay was all that enjoyable in the first game and it's mostly the same here. It wears thin for me. I just don't find it all that fun. So with a terrible narrative and characters, and average gameplay, all I'm left with is a very pretty game. But that isn't enough to make me want to continue playing a game. Most high end games these days look pretty damn amazing. Games now have to actually be enjoyable if they want to stand out and be held in great esteem by gamers.

Another thing I have to mention is that the game has very obvious woke messaging throughout it. I am so tired of being beat over the head constantly with this same political ideology in every form of entertainment media. And given the fact that this game will likely be played by many young people who aren't aware of the propaganda they are being fed it amounts to a kind of brainwashing. I think this is despicable and should be called out. Most gamers do not want any kind of overt modern political messaging in their games.

So, in the end I disliked the game for several major reasons: the poor narrative and characters, the average gameplay that I don't get much enjoyment from, and the fact the game is being used as a vehicle for specific political messaging. If Naughty Dog returns to what made games like Uncharted 2 so great I will gladly buy and play their next game. But if they continue down this path of being more concerned about shoehorning their political agenda into a game, instead of making sure it's a great game that can be enjoyed by a wide range of gamers, I will be avoiding their future releases.

*This game is a hate letter to fans of Joel and Ellie*

The Last of Us Part 2 is a betrayal. It undermines the beautifully ambiguous storytelling of the first game and dishonors what Joel and Ellie had to survive and endure. It takes these beloved characters and ruins them to hammer in that Abby was no worse than Joel, Ellie was no better than Joel, and Joel was a villain. In contrast, themes like revenge, violence, and forgiveness all ring hollow in this sadistic game.

Neil Druckmann has said he loves Joel and Ellie, but actions speak louder than words. Make no mistake, the Joel and Ellie fans loved from the first game are gone - one literally and the other all but in name. And while most of the fan hate focuses on what was done to Joel, it’s really Ellie who gets the worse treatment. The story Druckmann chose to write takes a tough as nails yet charmingly sarcastic and plucky girl and methodically breaks her, both psychologically and physically. It also makes the player complicit in this narrative with no choices, aside from simply not playing the game.

So, Naughty Dog tricked fans into participating in a beautifully produced snuff film and now wants praise for their audacity. Certainly, plenty of professional gaming journalists have done just that, along with allies of social diversity who may or may not have even played the game. To be fair, I can’t fault people too much since any critics run the risk of being labeled bigots and getting blacklisted. In fact, defending the game may even be a way of rationalizing what was done in hopes it wasn’t all for nothing, similar to how other fans might wish it was all just a fever dream.

If the choice is between a kind of Stockholm Syndrome or becoming depressed, all the false praise for TLOU2 makes a lot of sense. Seeing the sheer amount of mental gymnastics the defenders of this game are willing to perform is impressive. There’s no doubt what Naughty Dog did to their fans was both by design and rather clever. If there’s one defining zeitgeist of our times, it’s divisiveness. Also, they couldn’t have been given a better time to release than 2020. Truly, a masterpiece of malicious manipulation.

There’s just one small problem with Naughty Dog’s strategy - it seems to have alienated a significant portion of their fan base. What that means for the survival of the franchise and the developer only time will tell. But for Joel and Ellie’s sake, an old proverb comes to mind...

Do you think anyone would care about that in the TLoU world? They have bigger things to worry about. Stuff that actually matters.
This sort of stuff happens throughout the entire game.
And then they have the audacity to force Abby down our throats!
Oh man, I'll just stop here or else I never will.
The Last of Us did not deserve this. This writing team should be ashamed.
The Last of Us: Part II is mediocre at best.

The first game had a great story throughout and mediocre gameplay that was kept interesting because of the chemistry between the characters. Part 2 has a poor story with slightly improved gameplay but very little chemistry between characters. Its not 'politcally charged' at all - those criticisms are bizarre to me.
The game, for me, is split in two halves with an epilogue.
The first half is very good. You play as Ellie and she really remains as the only character worth a damn.
The second half's story, however, is a terrible convoluted mess. Flashbacks within flashbacks trying to get you invested in shallow characters you already know the fates of. An 'alternate' tale from the perspective of another - essentially the antagonist but the game purposefully tries to blur the line between antagonist and protagonist - which tries to fill you remorse for glorified random NPC's you killed as Ellie. I didn't give a damn about anything this other story the game tried to tell. It was a painfully boring 12+ hours. If the game continued telling Ellie's story instead of this, it would have been much better.
Eventually the Ellie and the antagonist's stories catch up and we enter the ending sequence/epilogue. The ending is as underwhelming equally as underwhelming, leaving you with a feeling of pointlessness and frustration - if you do manage to feel invested at all.
Its a real shame. It had such promise around the 12 hour mark but instead of developing further it just dwells on events which it tries to force the importance of.
An uninspired, drawn out and irritating story in a story-focussed game makes this not worth a play, especially at full price.

First off the game looks absolutely amazing. If all you care about is looks this game will not disappoint.

The story is just OK as a stand alone game, but taking into account the first game the story falls flat as a sequel. The main cast is no longer likable and you will more then likely hate them by the end. The end is just terrible.

The fist game had its faults but so much could be overlooked due to the lovable cast. This one is brutal and does not have that in it.

We also get sequel baited? This game as a standalone game would be worth a buy, however it is not. ND made this a sequel to one of the most beloved new IP's ever. More was expected, and while I can say they took risks, one would have to say they failed.

    Pros:
    -Graphics
-Combat ; some hate it but I still enjoyed it very much, if you wanted an evolution you did not get it but you do not need to make changes for changes sake it fits the world very well.
    -Crafting system
    -Getting to play Ellie again
    -Voice actors are top notch
    Cons:
-New characters are not very likable, having to play someone who I hate after 2 hours of game play I did not find fun. Should of led with the second half where we learn about the history before you had the event I am talking about. Having me hate them and trying to get me to like them is so much harder then having us learn and fall in love with them first. It would of made the player think so much more about the events rather then **** this person" that I think most will feel.
-pacing is everywhere, to many switches
-way to long, the game could of been 12~15 hours just like TLoU 1
-Story is just not very good once you look at the first game.
-So many "Deus ex Machina moments": the number of times someone should of died and got out of it UGH. Please keep this to just a few times people!

This game is all about story. And it mostly fails at it. If this game had not been a sequel I could likely place it at a 7/10 Maybe an 8 even. But its not, the game does not respect the first game at all. It be like if Iron man 2 killed Tony off in the first 15 minutes then had Pepper go on a revenge story, become a total loser, and follow it up with the murderer becoming a "hero" or likable person at least.

If you want to get into the last of us IP start with The Last of Us 2. And follow it up with the prequel (the original Last of Us) You probably will enjoy the second and fall in love with the first.

I'll begin my review with a positive statement: I LOVED The Last of Us (Part 1). Everything about that game resonated with me on every tangible level. It was a tour de force. It was Naughty Dog's magnum opus. It was everyone's Game of the Year for 2013. I played the game on PS3 and then again on PS4 - twice in fact (my first playthrough, then a New Game Plus playthrough). What more needs to be said? I really, REALLY LOVED The Last of Us. Everything - from the characters, to the story, to the gameplay - and when I reached the ending, I felt something that no other game had quite made me feel before. In every sense of the word, The Last of Us is an exceptionally excellent masterpiece. And that is why it pains me to talk about The Last of Us Part 2.

After all the hype, the information spiels and red herrings, The Last of Us Part 2 is the second biggest let-down of 2020 (the biggest let-down of 2020 being Cyberpunk 2077). I knew fully well that the story would encompass the theme of 'Hate' to contrast the original game's theme of 'Love' - I thought that it would be interesting and might pay off in some way - but in truth, I never could have predicted how epically disappointing it would be.

I don't know what happened, but Naughty Dog took the theme of 'hate' and ran with it into 'uncharted' (pun intended) territory to a degree that made TLOU2's narrative grossly unlikeable and managed to alienate their fans. If anything, Naughty Dog took things WAY TOO FAR.

It was in the first 3 hours that Naughty Dog did the UNTHINKABLE IN A DISAPPOINTINGLY BAD WAY. I won't say what, but I was left feeling shocked, mortified, and simply insulted by such a blatantly BAD narrative decision that spits in the eyes of fans of the original TLOU and adds insult to injury in EVERY WAY POSSIBLE. It was after this moment that I simply lost the will to continue playing TLOU2, but I somehow managed - even though I deeply regretted every moment of it.

I can't talk about Joel (hint, hint), but I can talk about Ellie, and in all honesty I don't like how her character has changed since the first game. At the end of TLOU (and even at the beginning of TLOU2) Ellie is still relatively bright, despite her experiences. Right off the bat at the start of TLOU2, Ellie is UNLIKEABLE in every way - even going as far as to distance herself and not talk to Joel, not to mention being downright depressing. After THAT moment she just gets worse to the point where I didn't even recognise her at all.

Another issue is how TLOU2 ham-fistedly integrated political and social statements about LGBTQ aspects into it's narrative - so much so that I felt I was playing less of a videogame and more of a manifesto (to clarify I completely respect all LGBTQ rights and ideals). My point is is that the game could've integrated these aspects better and with more subtlety - instead the game chose to jump on the band wagon of woke culture by making these narrative elements OBVIOUS, even to the detriment of an already appalling story.

Another major negative is how the writers (Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross) handled the themes of 'hate' and 'grief'. Ellie is so hateful, even to the point where she doesn't think about the consequences of actions - a fact that Abby, the game's secondary protagonist and primary antagonist, is also guilty of. Throughout the story, things happen that SHOULDN'T happen. In actuality TLOU2's story is SO hateful, it turns the whole game into a TOXIC EXPERIENCE (do not mistake this with emotional catharsis).

I don't know where it all went so wrong (I actually think I just quoted one of the characters from the game), but Druckmann's nihilism got the better of him - (Halley) Gross' mentioning of the fact that she tapped into her personal experiences with PTSD while writing the story didn't help matters much either.

In terms of gameplay, TLOU2 moves things forward slightly. Yes, I'll praise the graphics and the animations, but all of that doesn't matter when the main story driving everything forward is so toxic and unlikeable (it actually makes playing the game a chore to see how horribly the plot moves forward). In actuality, TLOU2's gameplay feels more like an obligation instead of something lovingly and professionally crafted (unlike Naughty Dog's previous efforts). Gunplay feels sluggish, imprecise, and simply, not very fun, turning most firefights into frustrating ordeals. I remember aiming at a thug who was barely 5 metres from me and even with the reticule trained squarely and accurately on his head, I still managed to miss him somehow(!). Another nuisance is that Ellie can be stunned or easily knocked over which just further compounds my issues with TLOU2.

I don't know how TLOU2 won GOTY 2020 last year. It simply is a BAD GAME and a HORRIBLE SEQUEL that does things that no-one asked for. The only comparison I can think of is the recent Star Wars trilogy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While the game's accessibility is among the best out there, providing a gateway for those less skilled and a challenge to those looking for a thrill, as well as looking and sounding phenomenal in terms of graphics, sound design, music and voice acting, the story felt shallow and pointless the whole way through, the gameplay loop can become repetitive, and with an unlikable character you're forced to play as for half the game getting the win in the end, I never at any point felt satisfied with how the story played out. I nearly cried at some scenes, genuinely smiled at others, but after leaving, I left with no real impact from the game's messages and tone, mostly since it seems like a game that came out ten years too late with its "revenge and violence are never the answer" themes. If you wanted me to feel bad for killing the people trying to kill me, the right decision is to let me understand them through the eyes of the person they've hurt most, Ellie, and let me decide their fates.

What we have instead is a game that, at every turn, tells you that people must die to progress the story, then shifts focus in a shallow attempt at making you feel guilty for playing the game. Niel Druckman mentioned that this game wasn't meant to be fun. And truthfully, that is exactly true for this game, he hit the nail on the head. In that regard, he has my respect. But I am of the camp of people who firmly believe that players should have some input or incentive to play the game. If you do not make the game fun, people will stop playing. People will quit halfway through, and the story you've created would no longer matter, simply because there were more gripping stories out there, or more engaging games.

If you wanted to create a movie, then create a movie. But it isn't one I would want to watch. I'm a more grown person now, one who can appreciate many things about a game. But if I cannot have any fun in the supposed magnum opus, the greatest masterpiece of all time, then maybe it doesn't deserve to be called a masterpiece after all. It's flawed in story, gameplay, and even emotion. Because at the end of the day, I left it feeling completely thoughtless. It felt like a mediocre fanfiction. I can appreciate the game for what it's done on a standpoint of presentation and accessibility. But nothing beyond that.

In summary, The Last of Us 2 is a visual and auditory spectacle, but that's about all you're getting; spectacle. With how much blood is shed and guts are spilled, it's baffling how little this game shocked me with any plot beats or twists, or even in terms of its visual style. Truthfully, in a decade or so, this game's graphical achievements will be trumped by something else. And when that happens, it will fade into nothing but a memory for me.

THIS IS A REAL REVIEW, I ACTUALLY FINISHED THE GAME.

I see a lot of people review bombing this game without actually playing it and talking about only what the leak talked about, which was true btw.

Graphics, they are about the same some details are fleshed out on the character but by the end of the game trees actually started to turn into brown logs with no texture.

Sound, not bad I can hear everything pretty well but nothing pop out at me.

Gameplay, This is where the game falls apart, besides the story. Biggest issue was the camera, it let you move it but shot you back to what the game wanted you to see. Example, I was trying to look at the sky at one point but the game decide to say, "Hey look at this wall you passed six times" and no there was no enemies on the other side. This becomes worse in combat when you dodge sometimes the camera swings to look at your face but now you cant see the opponent you're fighting.
Besides that the play style is the same except for the shives they took that out so now Ellie can sneak attack all she wants. That is until you play as Abby(the new character) then new enemies show up that require a shive.

Story, OK so, the leak is correct. Short Summary- Joel dies, new character joins(Abby), revenge, revenge, revenge. That's pretty mush it .
but lets flush some of it out. Joel dies yes which kicks off the whole adventure of revenge. that's right about 20mins in and he's dead. Ellie sets off to get revenge on 6 people with her girlfriend, yes Ellie is a lesbian, no her girlfriend is not Abby. and about this time Abby shows up but now you can play her turns out Abby is apart of the crew that killed Joel, so you play as the protagonist and the antagonist. Ellie gets her revenge on all but one, Abby. Until the end then you start the game over but from Abby's point of view but she has flashbacks, every damn time you finish a part its a flashback or flash forward depending on how stupid they want it to be and its all about Abby getting revenge for her dead friends. Once Abby's side is over you finally get to see the ending but you have to fight Ellie as Abby, then Abby says **** it I'm giving you your life bye". So that's the end? Nope now Ellie goes hunting again after some time has past but this time you fight Abby as Ellie. All this just to have both Ellie and Abby give up on revenge and go their separate ways.
Ellie loses her girlfriend because she couldn't stop sooner and Abby is now on the run from her group.

Overall, the Graphics aren't much to hold up since they are PS3 graphics still. Sound was present but I could have put on any music and it would have been the same. Gameplay was a mess with the camera going everywhere except where I want it to go right now and at times the Controls felt too different, one button jumps, one button crouches, one button snaps the camera back forward and if you're like me hitting to many buttons to quickly you find your self thrown into a wall 10 ft away and you need to figure out where you are now while getting shot at or mauled by 2 clickers and 4 stalkers. Story everyone already knows I just don't know why had to add on 5 more hours of filler and then 3 hours of conclusion for the conclusion.
4/10 wait for a big sale like 90% sale.

It wasn't the "gritty world". Or the gameplay, which was only slightly innovative at the time, but hardly the selling point of the game. It was the story and relationship between the characters. The dynamic of taking someone who had lost everything, and giving them something to hope for. To the point where they will sacrifice everything to save that person. The motivation is love, not hate. The sequel plunges you into hatred. Sure it's fine to explore that element, but doing so while destroying what people love is the wrong move. Just make your own game, a spin-off, a new franchise to explore those elements, don't hijack a franchise people love. You've hijacked the fans love of the characters to make a profit from pre-orders, and shat on the core audience that loved the original game. People don't dislike the game because Ellie is gay, or that there is a trans person (maybe some do, but **** em). We already knew about Ellie, fans played the expansion for TLoU where this is explored. It was great. It built our love for the character and her journey. We dislike it, because you destroyed the characters we love.

You just can't crap on such a beloved character like that as a means to get someone else on a rampage, is a disgrace to all of us the passionate fans like myself (who actually got a collectors edition of the game). You might think that the last of us belongs to naughty dog, it actually belongs to all of us who love this franchise and if you **** on it you **** on all of us. Expand

Doing unexpected things does not equal a good story. Shock value can only carry art so far, and boring gameplay segments together with unlikable characters make the second part of this game a chore

I loved LOU-1. And I wanted to love the follow up. I did love the first half as it was very true to the original. But then you have to play the 2nd half as Abby instead of Ellie. This was annoying for much of the game. Abby's chapters were more challenging overall, and I grew to be fond of her- she just didn't belong in this game. Plus it kept going back & forth through time. Annoying. I did like the environments, shooting, fighting, and overall game play. I just wish it focused on Ellie's story most of the game. I replayed the original several times, and I think I'll replay this one at least once just to know what I'm getting into the next time, but then I'll probably sell it. It's a shame- I love Naughty Dog- but this once is just up to the first one- which was one of the best games of all time! Expand

Let's not beat around the bush. This game is nowhere near a 10/10 but it's also not a 1/10 either. I read the leaks a few months ago but I still went in with an open mind. It was worse than I thought it would be. Here are the pros. The graphics, gameplay, voice acting, and music are all top-notch. That's it.

Despite all of that, the story is a colossal disaster. I don't need to go into

Despite all of that, the story is a colossal disaster. I don't need to go into detail because pretty much everyone on here has summed it up better than I ever could. If you loved the first game's story and are expecting another adventure with Joel and Ellie, you're going to be very disappointed. I was expecting so much better after waiting for 7 years and it hurts to give it this score.

Was very disappointed with the story and lack of replay value (even with a new game +), but the gameplay is pretty fun in parts, certain scenes are cinematically dramatic to great effect (even in the latter half), and the graphics throughout are comparable to RDR2. Lots of work went into this, but it feels much to waste, unfortunately.

    Garbage.

Mediocre story with limited character's development and pigeonholed growth. Too busy pushing its own agenda to realize that games do not need to preach anything to be good.

Wait for a deep sale or skip this garbage.

Instead of that i finished the game only to see Joel dying at the prologue out of nowhere from some uninteresting characters that doesn't mean anything to me because the story is so badly writen and executed that it doesn't even bother to make them shine.
So much sadness and misery for nothing and two beloved characters ruined.
This is not a good tribute to what made TLOU such an amazing game.
I would also like to mention the misleading and false marketing of the game that will never be forgotten.
Good graphics, amazing sound and music with more refined gameplay mechanics than it's predecessor but with a poorly written and executed story that is more comparable to a B movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off let me say the game Play was awesome, The graphics, control, and UI/crafting was far better then the first game.
I would have love to give it a 10, but the story was just God awful.

    1. Not as open world as it said, The world was plenty big enough...but in one direction really. If you went through the wrong door or dropped down at the wrong time you couldn't go back...so many times I didn't save I missed out on safes, and other loot because of this fact. You should be able to back track if needed.
    2. if you stealth killed an enemy, the others wouldn't know, but if you killed one away from the others with a punch or knife all the others would be alerted. Also some of the clickers would see you a lot of the times if you were in sight duck down and being quiet.
    3. Killing off your main protagonist was a very dumb move. Sure he did some awful things but they all did even Abby, And Abby had years to find out why it happen and cool down. Ellie's rage was warranted Abby's was not. Also taking two of Ellie's fingers was just dumb. I hope they can save this game with the the third one. Naughty Dog really miss the mark on the story big time.

Game play awesome, story not so much. I Think Naughty Dog forgot what maid The Last of Us one so big....Both Joel & Ellie.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
