I enjoyed Until Dawn, it has a decent story, game play has good pace and intriguing mechanics. I was quite excited for this tittle and was looking forward to exploring the sanitarium since the first game. The Inpatient completely fell flat in my opinion. Made worse by awe ful tracking and a terrible in game avatar (loading human was a psvr release title and has a far better in game body) no matter what i tried my hands and head would not mesh with my in game hand locations. Interactivity in game was basically non existence (minus chess boards and mugs) game was short and sadly very boring with easily forgettable characters. I was looking forward to some re-playability with the multiple endings, but i will not subject myself to that again. Was a good idea with a ton of potential, excellent visuals, a creepy atmosphere, amazing facials expressions and npcs looking you in the eyes made while talking was pretty neat. Sadly I do not recommend this game. Expand

Unfortunately, this game is another "experiment" for virtual reality. Lenght is less than three hours. No puzzles. No enemies. Boring story. Bad controls. It has good visuals, but that does not make a game. Do not trust scores of 10 from fanboys, you are warned!

At first i thought it was overpriced for two hours long game. But I got it as used cheaper. My God, it wasn't about the duration after all, it was about that this short duration was boring and dull. Numerous dialogues when you are just standing, so much darkness (maybe 3/4 of the game duration is in the dark). You actually do nothing, it's almost like watching a boring vr video thatsAt first i thought it was overpriced for two hours long game. But I got it as used cheaper. Awful controls, not 1:1 or even close. Found the world was way too big, with MASSIVE 7'6" tall NPCs, and my character too. Walking speed way too slow, but even with that the game takes less that 3 hours to complete.

A couple of good jump scares, and saying the answers works well, but overall avoid this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to like "The Inpatient" but found it impossible. It's a game of two halves.

The first involves spending several days in a locked cell. Each day has a small interaction with a character or two, and maybe an object to interact with triggering a "memory" which is just a short sequence of dialogue in which you aren't able to move. Some of the days end with a dream sequence which are mildly creepy with the occasional jump scare, but are mostly too dark to see what is happening.

The second half of the game is when the cell door opens and you can take a linear path from your cell to the end game. There are a few characters to meet although the acting and dialogue isn't great.

I have replayed a few seconds to see the butterfly effect in action. Some of the actions are obvious, some are subtle but since you only know the characters for about 30 minutes before you hit the end of the game you hardly care about them.

The game lasts 2 - 3 hours, although if the walking speed was increased to a sensible level it would probably be 2 hours or less.

The perspective of the game is totally off. The characters and your own player model appear to be massive. This is very off putting and totally ruins the sense of immersion. The Move and Dual shock controls are awful. Interacting with door knobs or cups (which are basically the only things to interact with) is awkward and frustrating.

I was able to see how decisions affected the characters in the second half of the game, as resuming once completed allowed me to make different choices. I will play the game again to see how much difference the early questions make to the survival of characters which had already died by the time I was released from my cell, but I can't imagine it changing my overall score of the game. Worth buying for £10 or lower.

Practically the decisions you make do not influence the game, basically it is a slightly better VR reality video, it is not worth buying the game.

I’m not opposed to heavy-narrative-focused games, walking simulators, or any other name you want to throw at them. I like the good ones though and this isn’t one of them.
Ps: Jump scares in VR should be illegal.

I’m a huge VR fan. I own multiple VR HMDs and this game had me so hyped since I enjoyed Until Dawn...sadly this game turned out to be the worst VR game as well as worst game in general that I played this gen. Very disappointing :(

The Inpatient sounds amazing on paper, but the terror is watered down so quickly and to such a large degree that it manages to make three hours feel easily twice as long, and not in a good way.

The Inpatient does not bring revolution to VR horror games, but thanks to butterfly wings effect it offers a solid re-playability. The game is from the beginning very good and interesting, unfortunately it is not able to hold (keep) this level to the end. [Issue#284]

It's yet another curiously half-hearted side project from Supermassive that, appropriately, won't linger long in the memory. [Apr 2018, p.120]
