As far as audio, graphics and physics go, The Girl and the Robot is basically archaic. Add the severely limited combat to the mix and you'll understand that The Girl and the Robot really isn't worth your money. Shame, because there's some fun to be had with the game's story and puzzles.

The Girl and the Robot feels like a small, basic package that does very little to establish something worthwhile. The puzzles are simple enough to grasp and navigating the two companions can feel enjoyable and rewarding. It's a shame it's hamstrung by combat which struggles to feel responsive or satisfying.

The end reality is that The Girl and the Robot is like what would happen if I tried to write a Shakespeare play. People would pick it immediately as a (deeply) inferior pastiche, because it might emulate the style of its inspiration, but it would be a faint imitation in every way that actually counted.

    The Girl and the Robot
more like the girl and the tin man
The Girl and The Robot is a cooperative puzzle game where you control both characters...
A girl and a robot trying to escape a caste ruled by an evil queen
you can switch freely between the 2 to throw switches and open doorways for the other to get through
As the girl you’ll be able to climb through holes, throw switches, repair your robot friend.. And pretty much nothing else...
The robot is the one doing the heavy lifting here…
You can carry the girl or leave her behind
as you go forward clearing the way as there are other robots roaming around that if they grab the girl its game over…
so not only are you standing on pressure pads going through some pretty basic puzzles, you’ll be fighting…
Your robot can attack, block, and sort of dodge a little...
And the first half of the game which I liked a decent amount the game doesn’t throw too many enemies at you at once so it doesn’t seem too bad…
but about halfway through this 3 and a half hour journey the games pacing comes to a crawl as it throws you into a maze with exploding robots and areas with tons of enemies to deal with.. And this is when you realize how awful this games combat really is…
    It’s stiff, clunky and awkward...
There’s a run button here which can allow you to gain some distance so you can face your enemies maybe shoot them with your sweet bow, but for some reason the run button will sometimes pan the camera behind you instead just keeping you there taking the damage desperately trying to get away…
with your dodge move barely working…
which brings me to my biggest issue with this game besides the entirety of its 2nd half…
The fact that buttons just aren’t responsive enough…
there’s a noticeable input lag here and sometimes I felt like the game was just not picking up on my commands at all.. Both in combat as well as throwing switching, picking up the girl or setting her down
the game has a noticeable clunk to it from the start and the clunkineess just gets highlighted the more enemies it throws at you…
combat just starts feeling cheap. So much so I had to resort to just shooting enemies through walls because I couldn’t bother trying to get lucky to take their back for an instakill, or deal with them surrounding and stunning me while I desperately try to dodge…
The game does sequel bait and the credits call this game act 1…
my experience here wasn’t bad enough for me to not want to play its sequel..
there’s something here despite it feeling pretty bare compared to other games of this genre like ICO, the last guardian, or even troll land I..
I’m intrigued to find out what happens next
I just hope the sequel if it ever comes is more of this games first half than it is its second half…
more focus on puzzles, less on enemies… but either definitely polish up these unresponsive tin man mechanics…
I give The girl and the robot
    a 5/10
