One of the most underrated Horror Masterpieces of all time! This game is absolutely incredible, specially on PC, but also on PS4. It has one of the best selection of boss monsters and regular enemies i have seen in any game ever, maybe only beaten by Resident Evil 4. In depth crafting/upgrading system, one of the best atmospheres of any horror games (yes better than any silent hill) andOne of the most underrated Horror Masterpieces of all time! I like this game a lot more than the sequel. The first game has much better atmosphere, storytelling and level designs! The characters and bosses are good and memorable, Ikumi Nakamura did a very good job in this game.

Great game, severely underrated. The atmosphere, the story and the storytelling are so good, far better than the second game. Also this game's Sebastian is the best Sebastian.

On the whole this game is way better than the soulless sequel. The second now was too generic and boring, but this one still takes special place in my heart.

This game has way better story than the second one. The protagonist is also better. TEW2’s Sebastian was just annoying but TEW1 Sebastian is good.

If you want a solid survival horror experience with deep story and gameplay, play this game and the amazing DLCs. You don't have to play the sequel though. The first game is better than 2 in every possible way.

To me it seems that this horror masterpiece is criminally underrated. This is Dead Space level horror game, worth trying for amazing psychological horror atmosphere and interesting boss fights.

This game is way better than its own sequel. The Evil Within 2 was just a clunky mess filled up with janky cutscenes, but the first game is still a masterpiece of survival horror.

Rating this in 2023, straight after playing Resident Evil 4: Remake.

This game was not only great for its time, but is objectively great now. Yes, the graphics are rough, the controls are clunky and the mechanics are dated. But there is a genuine sense of horror and suspense throughout the game. Something RE4R failed to offer at all. Different things happen which keeps the game

While playing The Evil Within, I felt like I returned to the good old days of survival horror. You could tell that Silent Hill was one of Shinjis inspirations for this game. I also sensed some inspiration from horror movies from the 80s and of course Resident Evil 4.
There were some frame rate drops and texture pop ins that occurred sometimes while playing the game, but it wasn't so bad, I've seen a lot worse in other games.

The graphics themselves are nothing special, however the environments that you traverse are interesting and beautifully designed, you could defiantly tell you are playing a shinji mikami game.
Enemy design is also very nice and you could tell that the designers took their time in creating each enemy..I did not like the black borders that were present on the screen at first, but after awhile I didn't mind it.

Bosses seemed to be frustrating but I'm a type of gamer who enjoys learning by dying.. The game doesn't tell you how to kill a boss, so chances are you will die over and over again until you find out for yourself on how to defeat it... This game is challenging.. I played on normal and it was still pretty hard.
The story is weird, it's confusing and it seems like it drags out a bit, but nonetheless it is very solid, I actually like the story better than Resident Evil 4. However I liked Leon a lot better than Sebastian, I thought Sebastian was a very dull protagonist, just a pretty boring guy..
Puzzles were ok, nothing special, quiet easy actually, could be because I was only playing on normal, but they are pretty straight forward.
I did not find the game scary but I did find it disturbing and I was tense through most of it, just like resident evil 4.
Resident Evil 4 to me is slightly better than The Evil Within (at least to me) but it was a fun ride, I plan on playing it again... First play through took me approx 17 hours.

I recommend this game to people who loved the classic Resident Evil games, newcomers may not like this game as it does indeed feel like an old school horror game. The game is also hard so you must have the patience and be able to learn by trial and error...

Mikami returns once again with a memorable masterpiece being one of the most nerve-wrecking, mind-boggling and mildly horrific experiences of this generation, yet its the correct balance between survivor horror and fun that The Evil Within had accomplished easily over the course of the game with its unique twist on some of horror's most memorable landmarks. The heart-warming homages to Mikami's past glories and the cheesy voice acting of some of the characters can't go uncredited either. With that said, The Evil Within still falls short of what potential it had, delivering just enough redefining elements to the genre, rapidly making its mark with its ambiguous, over-the-top horror fun. Survival horror at it's finest. If you ever griped about Resident Evil losing it's roots by becoming an action shooter, this game is for you. You spend most of the game limping around with little health and not enough ammo to take down what is chasing you. Great fun that doesn't sell out to the lowest common denominator like most modern games do.

This game has a very rich story and interesting gameplay which is not repetitive from chapter to chapter.
However it's not for everyone - can be really scary sometimes.
In my opinion camera can have better angle as it makes a bit difficult to look around, especially if you're playing on PS4.

The Evil Within is an exhausting game. Whether you are running for your life, or stumped by a seemingly unsolvable puzzle, it will wear you down. The atmosphere is always tense, never leaving you with a moment of comfort (unless you consider being in a psych ward with Claire De Lune constantly playing comforting). The game controls akin to Resident Evil 4, although the controls are a bit more sluggish. It's important to note that the developers have done this intentionally in order to add to the tension and difficulty of the game. This can all be managed and refined by finding a substance known as green gel throughout the game, and upgrading your abilities and weapons. Once you have done so, you'll notice that the game begins to handle much more easily, but again you have to EARN that. Personally, I appreciate their approach with this; it gives gamers a greater feeling of accomplishment throughout their journey. The story is one that is ever evolving, and the game will literally toss you around through various encounters and scenarios that will literally keep you scratching your head throughout it. The dots to begin to connect as you persevere, whether you seek comfort in that is completely up to perspective. While this game seems to take after the 'action 3rd person shooter' of previous Resident Evil titles, it does give you a very different feeling in the lack of resources available. You cannot stock up on ammunition and health (unless you upgrade the ability to), and even if you do resources are hard to come by. You will often feel like you have what you need, but you will NEVER feel like you have too much. Graphically speaking, the game is far from superior. Current gen or next gen, it simply isn't the best looking title on the market. That being said, it is done well enough to the point that you won't be overly worried about pixel perfect textures, and while said textures aren't always perfect, the atmosphere throughout the entire game will keep you engaged regardless. The Evil Within was very tastefully done, and brings back elements of anxiety and tension that we have not seen in horror video game titles in years. It may not be perfection, but it is definitely worthy of praise for it's contribution to the survival horror genre. Expand

This game oozes atmosphere, mixing a great grind house aesthetic not too similar to recent Saw movies, but it's certainly not a game for all. If you're looking for a "pure action/power fantasy" game, look elsewhere.

This game has a lot more in common with say The Last of Us or more likely a stealth game similar to old Splinter Cells. Ammo is scare, everything is a threat, and much can

That said, I felt some of the game had a little too much trial and error in spots, but I still felt the game actually forced me to survive, utilizing literally every item in my inventory (something that most games don't do, whereas in other action games, you can kind of just pick a weapon the whole game and stick with it, not likely in this game) to beat bosses and enemies, which I found thrilling.

There were some Dark Souls-esque highs in this game when I literally used my last bullet/arrow/grenade to kill what I though would be an impossible fight. I always felt the game game me just enough to beat what was ahead, but not giving me enough to where I felt godly.

The restricted camera view (aka the super black bars) never bothered me, as I understood that the less you see in a game, the more uncomfortable the player is, and I felt that was a great tactic, forcing me to be aware of my surroundings and actually having to utilize the sound in the game as a tool to figure out what was around the corner or coming at me.

The story is very weak, weird and obscure, with some typical Japanese anime nonsense in there. It makes "sense" to a degree, but I feel it was the weakest part of the game, along with the terrible voice acting.

But, I still had a thoroughly enjoyable time with the game, and couldn't recommend it enough to true survival horror (emphasis on survival) or stealth fans.
