It is significantly inferior to its predecessor. The open world doesn't add much to the game and the horror footage is based on clichés already seen in the genre.

The Evil Within 2 is less creepy, but more refined. It's not quite as good as the first, but very entertaining. Like the original, the game borrows a page or two from The Last of Us. Like the original, the game borrows a page or two from The Last of Us. Visually, the game is an improvement with moody lighting and a solid framerate. The environments, however, are quite bland due to the story. While The Evil Within took place in a nightmare dreamscape, this is set in an ordinary town. Of course, the town only exists in a hyper real VR simulation.

The story involves the protagonist's daughter and a serial killer who are both inside the VR world. It's known as STEM and it bears a resemblance to the Animus from "Assassin's Creed". The plot is a bit overstuffed, but also less convoluted than the story from "The Evil Within". One of the biggest additions to EW 2 is the open-world environments. At certain points, you can use a scanner to discover numerous side-missions which are all worth pursuing. Unfortunately, the tone of the game is all over the place with some goofy line readings that conflict with the serious nature established at the beginning. Gameplay-wise, the weapons and upgrade system of the original return with a few nifty upgrades.

Overall, this follow-up is a good one with refined gameplay and a much improved presentation. It may not be as creepy as the first, but it's just as lengthy and even less frustrating (booby traps, clunky controls and tough difficulty are a thing of the past). While there are superior horror titles, "The Evil Within 2" should please fans of action-based scary games. I'd give it an 8.2 out of 10.

Played this back in the day when it came out, and played it again recently (after replaying The Evil Within One) after it came out and PlayStation Plus. But having replayed the original Evil Within, which I thought was a stellar game even by today's standards, I simply wanted 'more of the same but a little bit better,' which is what any good sequel should be for any movie or game. However, has has been stated in numerous reviews this game has a new director. Unfortunately he has thrown 90% of the original Evil Within into the trash can and this game is only 'The Evil Within' by name, but not by nature. Everything is different. It's now an open world game. Writing this in 2023, I'm bored of open world games. The original was a masterpiece. This is just another average game. Not scary at all, not exciting (a lot of walking around and collecting stuff), no super memorable bosses or bad guys. It basically becomes a case of following the icons on a map, much like most modern ubisoft games, and exploring houses along the way if you wish to. I don't. A massive disappointment. Expand

Initially, it's a bit hard to figure out what kind game Evil Within 2 is until. Once it clicks though I really enjoyed the experience. The open world sections are still a bit of a mixed bag. The enemy encounters can be a little frustrating and clunky at times, but all that can be forgiven for some the excellent sequences and atmosphere that happen outside of the open world sections.

It feels like the open world sections and enemy encounters really are all about resource collection for upgrading your stats/weapons. This ends up being a fun risk/reward loop throughout the game even if the actual combat with some of these enemies is a bit dodgy.

All that being said, The Evil Within 2 ends up being a great game once you get into the rhythm and pacing of how it expects to be played. Long sequences of open world exploration and resource collection combined with tight horror sequences that are really impressively designed and executed. The story is even good. It feels like there's quite a bit of Silent Hill 2 influence on the Evil Within in that a lot of the horror is psychological horror. There's a lot of surreal gotchas that remind me of some of the great moments in Silent Hill 2. The game that really did it right by making Silent Hill more of a mental space than a physical town with a cult and all that business. The Evil Within 2 grabs a hold of this idea of psychological horror and really makes good use of it. One of the few examples I can think of doing so since I first started thinking it after SH2. That alone is well worth the price of entry. I hope there's future games coming for this franchise.

Like the former, Evil Within 2 is reasonably linear, with semi open world game play that offers the occasional side mission and doesn't rely on backtracking too much. I was only stuck briefly a couple of times on what to do and the game guides you without being overbearing.

As with many horror titles the story isn't the strongest but one can easily look past it and have a good time. There is plenty of back story for characters should you want to look into it.
I found the steady incremental changes in weapons and enemies was enough to keep me interested, and the variety - from stealth action, to shooter, to Layers of Fear-esque sequences was engaging if perhaps predictable at times.
The bosses in particular are memorable.
Graphically it's not the pinnacle of the genre, but it certainly has some great looking environments. The Inception-like collapsing worlds and one particular enemy who has a flair for bloody art are a highlight in that space. Use of the environment like explosive barrels and vehicles, to electrocuting puddles for damage was a nice addition.
It's perhaps worth noting too that there are accessibility options on offer. It's not quite on the level of The Last of Us Part 2, but if you are wanting to make the game easier to control then there might be something here for you (one shot kills, auto aim, invincibility).

Also you have a pet cat.

Don't expect a AAA title but if you can looks past a lack of polish and just have fun then you may well find this worth a few dollars. I will be looking out for a sequel.

I feel that devs emphasized his sad-dadness in this game to make him more human and to make players be sorry for him(I remember one of the developers in tango proudly tweeted like "This game's Sebastian is daddy Sebastian!" on twitter before the game was released), but he isn't really a good dad in this game. First of all, why this game's Sebastian feels like a completely different person from the TEW1? Not only does he looks like a younger brother to TEW1 Seb, TEW2 Seb has such weak and terrible personality compared to the first game. For example, in this game Sebastian only cares about Lily, who is a very poorly-written daughter of him. Except Lily, he literally leave all the people to die, including Myra, who is also poorly-written wife of him. It feels like they intendedly made Sebastian into a SAD DILF and emphasized his daddy aspect in this game, to get sympathy from players, but like… no? Like why should I care about such **** daddy character, who doesn't care about people around him? I couldn't care for him at all, I even ended up hating TEW2 Sebastian. He is supposed to be a likable dad character, maybe, but no he was just cruel, weak, whiny and weird character.

It also felt weird that Sebastian keeps getting hurt mentally because of the fact he couldn't save Lily from the fire, even after he found out that Lily had been actually ALIVE. In the first place, the fire was apparently NOT his fault. But for some reason he keeps blaming himself, endlessly saying "It's all my fault". Like this doesn't really work as a characterization of Sebastian. It's just bad writing. It feels like devs tried to hurt Sebastian by any means, again in order to get sympathy from players, but I think they could've done better than that terrible writing.

And other characters were also written very poorly. As I mentioned above, Lily and Myra, who are supposed to be very important characters and Sebastian's emotional motivation, don't really work as characters nor emotional hook. Both characters are unbelievably shallow and not so different from the background information, as they were in TEW1. Especially Lily, like is she really a main character? She was utterly unmemorable and I couldn't care for her during the entire playthrough. And Myra… she at least had some personality, but was really weak as a character. She is just, a very selfless mom who takes all the **** for her family. To be honest I was a bit surprised to see such old-fashioned female figure in the game from 2017. It felt like male devs wanted to make an ideal mom character for their own sake. And even though, the final boss (Myra as a monster form) is named MATRIARCH. I thought it was kinda gross way to portray a woman character. Oh and other female characters were also shallow and fell victim to the bad writing. Aside from Kidman and Tatiana, there were two female allies in this game, which itself was good I guess, but both of them just supported and died for Sebastian. It's shame that they failed to write good female characters. At least Kidman was good, but as for her characterization TEW1's DLCs were MUCH better than TEW2.

Also this game had no memorable villains. In TEW2 players have to fight against three big villains but they were all shallow and didn't have enough backstory. First we have Stefano, a mad murderer artist (such a trope), but his motivation is nothing more than "THIS IS ART!!" and he doesn't have deep personality or backstory at all. And he just vanishes after the first act and never appear. Frankly speaking he is just meaningless to the story. I still don't understand why did I have to fight against him. And the second villain is even worse than Stefano. He is just… a black priest. That's all. He was the most meaningless character in this game, maybe. And finally we have monster-form Myra, who is just a selfless, sadly-became-a-monster-mom. Yes, tropes after tropes. Nothing was unique in this game's boss fights.

And most importantly, why this game's story is not connected to the first game at all?? In the first game, we had Ruvik, who created STEM and were well-written as a big villain. Leslie was also an important character, who has extraordinary power for STEM system. Both Mobius and Ruvik tried really hard to get Leslie. But in TEW2, both Ruvik and Leslie suddenly vanishes from the main story?? Like they never existed? It was really weird and I felt bad for them. And Joseph's absence in TEW2 was also weird. Him and Seb were portrayed as partners in crime in TEW1, but TEW2 Seb acts like he have never seen Joseph. It was sad to see him being ignored throughout the game (I know about the last slide but it's definitely not enough).

So just for the story and characterization I have many complaints about this game, but gameplay was also disappointing in TEW2. Sure gameplay got a bit smoother than TEW1, which is an improvement I guess, but other than that… I can't say anything good about the gameplay in TEW2. The enemy AI was dumb and open-world section was just dull. It wasn't tense as the first game and it felt like I'm playing some UBI games. Don't get me wrong I like UBI games, but I don't want such gameplay in Evil Within series.

    So overall. Not recommend.

Evil Within 2, together with the one it remains the most horror video game of all time. Considerably burying the success of Resident Evil. Definitely magnificent gameplay, with zombies that even react was you have sneaked.Nothing better if you want to spend an evening with friends. If I could give him 11 I would.

The ending really is a thing of beuty. They have taken what was begun in the firstvgame and woven it into a tale about a turtured family thay has to be experianced to understand its greatness..

Ive played EW2 on and off for years and I always go back and forth on how I feel about it. I think on of its best features is also its bigest problem. EW2 is a very origional and individual game, if you compare it to its prequel or other survival horror game , you could say it falls short.. But once you realuse its a horror stealth game and its probally the only one of its kind, you start to see the smart design behind this game.
Initially I didnt like EW2 because it was to different from the first game, but once you apraich every situation from a sneak and kill approach, thing get satisfying..
If I had known this generation was going to be so bad for horror games and all we would get is walking simulator puzzle games, I would have experianced E×2 in a entirly different way. Its crazy that a game I found highly dissapointing at the start of the generation is one of the best at the end..
Will horror game ever be as good as the PS2 XB 360 days again??? I doubt it niw thay western games developers and media is pusting this puriton, always offended mindset on games debelopment.

Probably the worst survival-horror game on PS4. It' not scary, it's not tense. The story is so badly written and the gameplay is boring because all you have to do is stealth. And most importantly, this game doesn't feel like The Evil Within.

Evil Within 2 is a terrible game as a sequel of the Evil Within, it's unbelievably terrible as a closure to Sebastian's story, it's terrible as a family drama, it's terrible as a horror game. Literally NOTHING is good in this game.

Very good survival horror game, held back slightly by a few flaws.

It’s often genuinely scary and disturbing, and the horror is very creatively designed. Roaming and surviving in a Twin Peaks style town with various monsters on the loose is a real joy. The dialogue and voice acting are pretty bad, but the story overall is an interesting sci-fi / horror mashup. Gameplay is great, but

The dialogue and voice acting are pretty bad, but the story overall is an interesting sci-fi / horror mashup. Gameplay is great, but bizarrely there’s no dodge or quick turn button, so you often feel clunky. And the game often requires you to unload all your ammo on a bullet sponge boss, then make you struggle through a gauntlet with no ammo. Seems unnecessarily punishing for the player. There’s also an odd character switch in the 11th hour, and the story drags at the end and sort of overstays its welcome when it should be racing to its conclusion.

But despite the issues, I still recommend it! It’s up there with the best of the genre.

Вообще в The Evil Within 2 очень приятно играть, наверное как в RE 2 Remake по сравнению с RE 2 1998.

I thought it was silly for the same creator of Resident Evil to commit to doing something new, but with features identical to those of Resident Evil itself. He missed a HUGE opportunity to do something totally new and ghastly, because nowadays, it is very difficult to find a horror game that takes your sleep away. The game also has some bugs. For example, sometimes the shotgun is invisible in Sebastian's hands. The portagonist's artificial intelligence is average, since there are barriers that he can jump to escape the monsters, but he doesn't jump. I really liked the story and especially the ending. But from the heart, I hope that if there is a third in the franchise, they will do it right. No Resident Evil fragments and footprints. We already have too much Resident Evil. You don't have to keep putting zombies in everything you create. Expand

Have to say I liked the first one more. Usually that's not the case in video games. Unlike movies, the sequel is usually better. This one somehow felt even more like a rip off of Resident Evil 4.

Story wise you're a law enforcement agent that's sent to a mysterious, creepy, zombie filled world to rescue a girl. That's the exact premise of RE4. They're not even pretending it's anything

Story wise you're a law enforcement agent that's sent to a mysterious, creepy, zombie filled world to rescue a girl. That's the exact premise of RE4. They're not even pretending it's anything different this time around.

The first one was scarier and more memorable with better creature designs. The final boss in The Evil Within 2 is one my least favorite video game clichés of all time. The giant, immobile boss that's fixed to the background. God it feels like every single game has that. The fact that you know from the get go that you're in some sort of matrix like machine takes away much of the horror and intrigue from the first. Then the top dog of Mobius is an agent Smith rip off and he has a bunch of agent goons.

But besides being so damn derivative of RE4 and The Matrix at least it's really well polished, plays well, and is a bunch of fun. It looks great too. An obvious upgrade over the first which I played on ps3. Terrific art design and well acted voice work even though they replaced the actor for the main character.

The truth is its not a typical open world just partial and I love it just like that.

It is well-paced and subtle that helps portray the hell that you the player are now in, The Evil Within 2 does follow cliches “within” its scares and plot points. But as a rebuttal, the product should not be judged by how cliche it is, but rather how well it can accomplish. And in this case, The Evil Within 2 again does it greatly in a manner very stylized and memorable. To the extent that it can be etched into your psyche. As far as the story goes, The Evil Within 2 sets out to develop and explore the character that is Sebastian Castellanos. Sebastian is no longer the blank-slate detective that he was in the first game. He is now the sincerely likable, yet tough character that the first game tried to portray. He is put into a situation that is deeply personal to his character, his arc, and the extension of Sebastian's backstory given in the first game that left you in the cold. In fact, every character in The Evil Within 2 is not a blank slate. Each character is their own character that never feels like a copy and paste. Every character is expanded through the storyline and optional conversations, as well as optional notes, found in-game. And each character plays a role in Sebastian's arc, whether they are ancillary characters or characters that test Sebastian's will. The story of The Evil Within 2 is greatly paced and is a very stylized, symbolic, and emotionally written rollercoaster. The soundtrack for the game is a bit mixed. The game's theme of the cover of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World' by The Hit House is the song that does a great job summing up the premise of the game. And the somber score that comes throughout the game is one to remember. Not to forget about Serenade for Strings, which is already a great score. But other than that, the soundtrack is just generic beats that best fit a sneaky atmosphere, a devilish ensemble, and an out of place track that plays during a boss-rush. There is not really any theme for the significant unrelenting creatures in the game, which is a shame. The gameplay of The Evil Within 2 is very much the same as how it was in the first game but improved upon. It is much smoother and easier to perform your sneak attacks and headshots. And the greatest improvement is that the stamina is no longer sad. The upgrading mechanics in the game is done well. Each upgrade is one step closer to making Sebastian an unstoppable force, so to speak. Being able to pull off new skills that enhance your survival attributes and making Sebastian much better at taking down his enemies. The crafting system is simple, as it should be. And it never feels like it gets in the way of survival or takes away from the experience by feeling cheap. The location that Sebastian must go through in the game is called Union. The Evil Within 2 follows a structure that resembles a mix of Silent Hill's explorable town and The Evil Within's linear chapter structure. You start off in the open-world Union. But once you make it to your destination, you often go to a linear level type structure. What can you find in the open-world Union? You find more weapons that will help you on your journey. You will only ever be handed two, and a third is required to find in order to continue the story. In Union, you'll also find world-building notes and resonances, collectibles such as keys and mysterious items, and an additional character arc and enemy for Sebastian. Union never feels like it gets old, but it will feel a bit unfinished the further you go into new areas of Union. The engine that this game is built upon, the STEM engine is truly magnificent. I would have to say The Evil Within 2 is a beautiful looking game. A real piece of art. Vibrant colors and clean models. Personally, I think this is one of the best looking games I have ever laid my eyes on. Depending on what platform you are on or how powerful it is, the game maintains a stable frame-rate with occasional drops. But the game suffers from a few glitches. Nothing that will break the game or the experience. But are small, common glitches. The Evil Within 2 is a huge step up from its predecessor and should be considered a great game for Tango Gameworks' second game. This game was handicapped by the first game and its reception with its players. This game is criminally underrated and deserves more love. And after this game, Tango Gameworks deserves more attention. Expand

The graphics and gameplay are awesome, the semi open world improved on the linearity of the first, the story is a bit wonky sometimes, but it doesn't detract from the plot and the atmosphere is nightmarishly beautiful. In conclusion: A very good survival horror game and a worthy sequel.

A very successful and high-quality interweaving of art with the game ...
This is a separate genre that deserves attention.
Be sure to wait for the continuation, the track "Ordinary World" - incredibly finely matched to all these events.

A good game but not special
Everything is better than the first game but could be better than this

Best way to describe it is a mix of Resident Evil and The Last Of Us. Truly an underrated game with hours of gameplay

Shinji Mikami’s philosophy is to focus on making the game’s good aspects shine even brighter instead of trying to eradicate its flaws. His latest work both benefits and suffers from that approach. The Evil Within 2 offers great exploration, but its story is laughable. It’s a thrilling shooter, but a mediocre stealth game. At the end of the day I find Mikami to be right – a game’s best moments count the most and make us turn a blind eye to its flaws. TEW2 fails to reach the level of my beloved Resident Evil 4, but in today’s circumstances a triple AAA survival horror without online components and intrusive microtransactions is a gem. A likeable follow-up that addresses valid criticisms of its predecessor and provides gory fun, but loses a little of what made it special in the process. [Christmas 2017, p.90]

Exploring the game's main town, which is full of monsters, new weapons and items, is a blast. New discoveries will immerse you into the gameplay, and make you forget about that daughter you have to save.
