Way worse than first game. I have finished first game over 10 times, but could hardly push myself to finish second game. It was so boring. All the horror elements were gone, semi-open world was awful idea, unique locations from first game was way better. It's so obvious that this game had different director. Hopefully Evil Within 3 will be better (if they even make it).

The Evil Within 2 is a slightly above average horror game with pretty looking graphics. It came out almost like a brand new title rather than following the path of the original game. Even though EW1 is my favorite, I won't bash EW2 with negativity since there are people who might enjoy or prefer the sequel.

EW2 is not directed by Mikami rather by Johanas (he directed EW1 DLC). A new director means a new perspective. He overhauled over 80% of the original design and installed his own new ideas. He made EW2 a semi-open world game which completely changed the identity of the game. He emphasized it more on the story than on the action (combat). Story wise, EW2 is a lot less puzzling (linear) and a lot more drama compared to EW1. EW2 feels like many different games combined. It includes games like Fallout series, a hint of Silent Hill, a touch of Resident Evil, a lot of Dead Space, and obviously The Last of Us.

At the end of the day, Bethesda is a business. Their business is selling video games. In order to sell more copies of EW2, they have to listen to previous complaints while also expanding their target audiences. EW1 wasn't a failure but its original concept only appeals to certain group of people (that includes me). You can read more in-depth explanation by Shinji Mikami and search for “The Evil Within 2 Doesn't Want To 'Suffocate' You With Horror Elements”.

If you loved the first game and looking for a faithful continuation, you might want to wait for sales to pick up EW2 considering it shares very little resemblance to EW1 (though if you just want to have fun definitely go for it). If you didn't like EW1, you should go buy EW2. If you never play Evil Within before, I suggest you start with EW2 since it has easier to digest story, far more forgiving to play (in terms of difficulties), and has updated graphics.

That's a very good second entrance from Tango we got here.

I've just beaten the game in Nightmare and I was overall delighted with the way the game handles its new orientation. It has an interesting way of delivering its core elements to the player. The whole game is taking place in the city of Union, pivotal place giving off plenty of room for exploration through semi-open areas.

I've just beaten the game in Nightmare and I was overall delighted with the way the game handles its new orientation. It has an interesting way of delivering its core elements to the player.

The whole game is taking place in the city of Union, pivotal place giving off plenty of room for exploration through semi-open areas. The game design is thought in such a way that you alternate between narrow places focusing on frenzied chase scenes and more open scenery prone to exploration. As far as I'm concerned the parts unfolding "inside" were the most thrilling as it's mainly during those closed sequences that the real survival/horrific touch springs. I recommend playing in Nightmare because the challenge is present and also because the game design choices won't make you feel uncomfortable or frustrated in any way. If you plan your escape properly relying on infiltration (you'll have to do so in Nightmare, trust me) the outcome will be rewarding because you'll save bullets and also sweat a lot from time to time for fear of getting your head topped off - some death scenes are horrendously graphic, good thing in a TEW game. While sometimes you'll be forced to run as fast as you can, you'll also have to bring out the big underloaded guns so as to make heads fall off. Given that ammunition is more a of rare commodity in this mode (though the lack never turns out to be an artificial attempt to spice up the global challenge if you thoroughly search your surroundings) shooting at enemies will always require a good aim just as did the first episode and this is an important element when it comes to inducing anxiousness. The game itself is not as terrifying as an Amnesia or Outlast primarily because of this alternation between the inside and the outside - the outside being thought as a way to take a breather between two insane sequences.

The atmosphere is absolutely riveting and spine-tiggling. Both the pretty graphics (especially on PC) and FX sounds are the root of this result. A lot of questions find answers and the scenario more personal this time is very pleasant to follow. I find it good that the developers put Sebastian in the center of the plot this time. It was high time they set him forth. He's a lot more well written than before, giving rise to a more human, touching and sensitive figure. Big up to Stefano Valentini who is to my mind the best-rendered ingame antagonist alongside Obscura.

    Good Points :
    - Well-written story
    - Stefano Valentini has a great fu*ked up personality
    - Pretty-looking (especially on PC)
    - More accurate aiming system than in the first
    - Shooting, running and stealth scenes feel good
    - Awesome bestiary chara design, gruesomely beautiful enemies (Well Sebastian's definitely a classy detective)
    - Quite lengthy for such a game (20h)
    - Smartly implemented crafting system
    - The bosses (Stefano)
    - Clearer story
    - Alternations inside/outside, a good idea...

    Negative points :
    - ...resulting in a less blistering terror pace
    - Rigid animations (movements)
    - Minor collision bugs

This game doesn't revolutionize anything but the execution of its mechanics is indubitably qualitative. We get to delve into a hellacious story with many strong points one should definitely consider experiencing. Do not expect this game to turn your blood into ice like Outlast or Amnesia because it's not as terrifying (neither was the first game btw) but do expect however a wacko journey that will have you venture into a twisted and impressively well rendered mad world where rationalism seems to be an intruder. A really good experience. If you loved the first iteration of the series and are fond of singular survival-horror experiences, you definitely should consider giving TEW 2 a try.

I won't be buying Evil Within 3 that's for sure. They killed what made the first one special. It's a shame that Evil within 1 and ALL of its DLC's were better than this game and much scarier.

    1)The game is NOT scary.

2- The open world mechanics that they forced into it. Open world kinda forced them to make the whole game in one location. I would have preferred more variety and different environments just like the first title!

3- They literally copy pasted Last of Us on too many aspects. If I wanted that game, then I wouldn't have bought this one. I'd rather play evil within 1.

4- The story is more detailed in this one and less mysterious... but it's extremely corny and uninteresting.

I had waited years for Evil Within 1 to bring back survival horror. Unfortunately, for the sequel they decided to disrespect and betray the original and go back to the latest fads and kill survival horror. The game has nothing scary about it or mysterious as the original did.

90$ canadian with taxes is way too much for this mediocre cashgrab honestly.

Firstly, the graphics are absolutely gorgeous! A few critics had commented that the graphics had regressed in some way, but I have absolutely no idea what they're on about, the graphics are seriously great. As for the gameplay, it's bags of fun, it's like a combination of the first evil within with silent hill 2 and also the last of us (in terms of stealthing about a semi-open world scavenging for decent loot and either sneaking past enemies or taking them on) the atmosphere is very tense in a fun way, much like resident evil 7 in that sense, it's tense... but not that paralysing dread that you get from the first game, which isn't a bad thing in this game, it's just different (but still good). The atmosphere also loosens up just slightly when you explore around which is cool so you can look around without crapping your pants, but they do a good job of building up to the next inevitable big horror moment, and also jump scares will get you at irregular intervals, which are pretty well done. Really good game and looking forward to getting back on it later on. An absolute must play for horror fans. Expand

After enjoying the 1st game in the series so much I was excited to play this second installment, and I wasn't disappointed.

The difficulty has been knocked down a fair bit but more in the sense that when you die you feel like it was down to you and not the game cheating you like before. The graphics are much improved on the original

The graphics are much improved on the original and the game has a good soundtrack with decent effects.
The enemy intelligence is improved and while the variety is slim there are some nice surprises every now and again.
The plot line is decent, what you'd expect from this type of game, but it is nice to witness Sebastian's story unfurl and conclude, or so we assume.
There are some interesting boss fights which will challenge you, however, the puzzle element of the game is all but gone.
With the original being very linear, it was nice to see the developers go for a more open world feel here and it is fun to explore the various areas of the town as you go through the game.
Some replay value in the New Game Plus mode that unlocks new things for you to try.
Only complaints are the stealth controls, they are a bit 50/50 and sometimes you can't pull off a move as you'd wish for some unknown reason, and the cost of some of the upgrades on the Green Gel trees.
Other than that, a great game and a great installment. Took about 18 hours to complete, roughly an hour a chapter broken down.

This is a more cinematic experience unlike its predecessor.

Its original director is not part of this release, you can tell just by playing the first episode because its vibe feels American. The game is quite repetitive and has very limited enemy designs. A normal enemy on the game is re-used in a boss fight. Various boss fights from the previous game are also re-used on this one.

The game also plays a lot with nostalgia as it emphasizes all the events of the previous game and boss fights.

The story of Castellano's Daughter and Wife is pretty sweet and emotional, and that is what stands out in this installment over the previous one, its the emotional and cinematic parts of the game.

The gameplay is smoother and more responsive. No longer a linear experience so the pacing and flow of the story does kind of suffer when free roaming the levels. A lot more stealth orientated and next to no enviromental challanges. The crafting is still kind of basic, but not as basic as the first game.

Not really feeling that high octane death trap dungeon experience this time around. I had more fun with the first game, because it was more linear action packed focused. Then again I do like it when creators don't just copy/paste the same game over and over again. So yeah a nice new stealthier feel to the Evil Within IP.

The Evil Within 2 is a great game and in my opinion a lot of replayability. Now, this doesn't mean it doesn't have flaws, it does. However, they are minor when you consider the entire body of work.

First off, you can tell a lot of work went into this game. The environments alone should be enough to convince you of that. The upgrading system is good but I believe could've been a bit better. For instance, if I have upgraded a lot of my abilities and I am left with 2000 green gel, there's not much I can do with it. Perhaps it would've been better to add something to trade in your gel for items you can craft ammo with. I felt like way too often I was left with additional gel I just had to sit on until I got more to do something useful. The boss battles are challenging and took multiple tries on Survival difficulty. Many times I was dealing with very low ammo. The open world environment I felt was an amazing touch. I loved exploring all of the nooks and crannies. I wish there would've been more houses and buildings to explore though. I loved the flashback scenes to Beacon and watching Sebastian trying to relive those moments -- especially when it was unexpected when you're just exploring a random house. The story was above average but could've been developer better. For instance, we still don't know who Stefano really is and why he was in STEM in the first place. We don't really know what events led to Lily's disappearance either. I felt like Stefano and Father Theodore were good villains but I would've like to know more about them. I thought the guns were awesome. I would've liked to have more throwables like grenades, molotovs, etc. I felt the end scene where you play Kidman the game turns into an action game which made me sad. It's not a huge deal, but the game could've been much better without it. The only real criticism here is that there wasn't more of it. More story, more houses to explore, more weapons, more items.

At any rate, I am looking for to The Evil Within 3.

EW2 does what game should do and suck you in, I had so much fun playing this that I did most of the side quests. I know that the Major Game reviews aren't raving reviews, but this is definitely the exemption. The game takes two steps forward at the price of leaving something behind. The game does lose something and that is story and suspense, I felt it took a step back in favor for the setting of the game(more action). I didn't have problem with it (I get it they want more Western games to play this).

The first game was far more of a dark horror experience where as this one was more of a lighter dark horror experience. Kind of hard to explain, but it was good to me. The only thing i didn't like about this game was the camera angles, but i got used to that over time. Other than that there were several heart pounding moments, a lot of tension and paranoia. If they come out with another Evil Within game i will probably consider buying it. Expand

One of the most perfect examples of modern survival horror, The Evil Within 2 is a game no horror fan should miss. With great pacing and a very satisfying upgrade system, it's the most fun I've had since Resident Evil 4. My only gripe would be that the game lacks some of the charm and atmosphere that the first Evil Within had.

EW2 takes a huge departure from the first installment and trades the traditional survival horror setup for the more modern sandbox style, and has added a stealth element that adds a plethora of new ways to handle situations besides run or gun. Out of ammo? pick up a bottle and throw it in earshot of a zombie, sneak behind it and enjoy one of the multiple (and awesome) instant kill sequences. Don't want to fight? Hide in the brush or walk quietly against a wall, but be careful to move slowly or the enemies will hear you. These features are in no way groundbreaking, but add a level of tension that you really can't get without it.
EW2 keeps the level up system with the green gel from EW, and lets you choose which attributes and abilities Sebastian will "level up". While I like this system, their is definitely an imbalance between stealth and combat. I prefer stealth, but when it comes to a boss, you need to have some combat and if you aren't prepared, could end up fighting a boss with a hunting knife.
Combat is the same as the original for the most part. Lots of weapons, a crafting system for items and weapons (also a bit unbalanced) and of course the signature crossbow is back!
The last thing I'll talk about is the fear factor. I've played the first EW, all the silent hills, and resident evil and this game is HANDS DOWN the scariest thing I've played. The bosses are terrifying and the plot is super tense.
The biggest complaint I've seen with this game is the ammo conservation. There was only one instance in the game where I ran out of ammo, and was immediately restocked after a few minutes of sneaking. While the stealth is great, it dampens the traditional stress of ammo conservation.
If you are looking for the same experience you had in the first installment, omit this title. But for those who are open minded, it's a must play for any survival horror junkie.

    Recomendado.

Initially, it's a bit hard to figure out what kind game Evil Within 2 is until. Once it clicks though I really enjoyed the experience. The open world sections are still a bit of a mixed bag. The enemy encounters can be a little frustrating and clunky at times, but all that can be forgiven for some the excellent sequences and atmosphere that happen outside of the open world sections.

It feels like the open world sections and enemy encounters really are all about resource collection for upgrading your stats/weapons. This ends up being a fun risk/reward loop throughout the game even if the actual combat with some of these enemies is a bit dodgy.

All that being said, The Evil Within 2 ends up being a great game once you get into the rhythm and pacing of how it expects to be played. Long sequences of open world exploration and resource collection combined with tight horror sequences that are really impressively designed and executed. The story is even good. It feels like there's quite a bit of Silent Hill 2 influence on the Evil Within in that a lot of the horror is psychological horror. There's a lot of surreal gotchas that remind me of some of the great moments in Silent Hill 2. The game that really did it right by making Silent Hill more of a mental space than a physical town with a cult and all that business. The Evil Within 2 grabs a hold of this idea of psychological horror and really makes good use of it. One of the few examples I can think of doing so since I first started thinking it after SH2. That alone is well worth the price of entry. I hope there's future games coming for this franchise.

Evil Within 2 is a terrible game as a sequel of the Evil Within, it's unbelievably terrible as a closure to Sebastian's story, it's terrible as a family drama, it's terrible as a horror game. Literally NOTHING is good in this game.

Well…this game is a very disappointing sequel isn't it? First of all, why this game's Sebastian feels like a completely different person from the TEW1? First of all, why this game's Sebastian feels like a completely different person from the TEW1? Not only does he looks like a younger brother to TEW1 Seb, TEW2 Seb has such weak and terrible personality compared to the first game. For example, in this game Sebastian only cares about Lily, who is a very poorly-written daughter of him. Except Lily, he literally leave all the people to die, including Myra, who is also poorly-written wife of him. It feels like they intendedly made Sebastian into a SAD DILF and emphasized his daddy aspect in this game, to get sympathy from players, but like… no? Like why should I care about such **** daddy character, who doesn't care about people around him? I couldn't care for him at all, I even ended up hating TEW2 Sebastian. He is supposed to be a likable dad character, maybe, but no he was just cruel, weak, whiny and weird character.

It also felt weird that Sebastian keeps getting hurt mentally because of the fact he couldn't save Lily from the fire, even after he found out that Lily had been actually ALIVE. In the first place, the fire was apparently NOT his fault. But for some reason he keeps blaming himself, endlessly saying "It's all my fault". Like this doesn't really work as a characterization of Sebastian. It's just bad writing. It feels like devs tried to hurt Sebastian by any means, again in order to get sympathy from players, but I think they could've done better than that terrible writing.

And other characters were also written very poorly. As I mentioned above, Lily and Myra, who are supposed to be very important characters and Sebastian's emotional motivation, don't really work as characters nor emotional hook. Both characters are unbelievably shallow and not so different from the background information, as they were in TEW1. Especially Lily, like is she really a main character? She was utterly unmemorable and I couldn't care for her during the entire playthrough. And Myra… she at least had some personality, but was really weak as a character. She is just, a very selfless mom who takes all the **** for her family. To be honest I was a bit surprised to see such old-fashioned female figure in the game from 2017. It felt like male devs wanted to make an ideal mom character for their own sake. And even though, the final boss (Myra as a monster form) is named MATRIARCH. I thought it was kinda gross way to portray a woman character. Oh and other female characters were also shallow and fell victim to the bad writing. Aside from Kidman and Tatiana, there were two female allies in this game, which itself was good I guess, but both of them just supported and died for Sebastian. It's shame that they failed to write good female characters. At least Kidman was good, but as for her characterization TEW1's DLCs were MUCH better than TEW2.

Also this game had no memorable villains. In TEW2 players have to fight against three big villains but they were all shallow and didn't have enough backstory. First we have Stefano, a mad murderer artist (such a trope), but his motivation is nothing more than "THIS IS ART!!" and he doesn't have deep personality or backstory at all. And he just vanishes after the first act and never appear. Frankly speaking he is just meaningless to the story. I still don't understand why did I have to fight against him. And the second villain is even worse than Stefano. He is just… a black priest. That's all. He was the most meaningless character in this game, maybe. And finally we have monster-form Myra, who is just a selfless, sadly-became-a-monster-mom. Yes, tropes after tropes. Nothing was unique in this game's boss fights.

And most importantly, why this game's story is not connected to the first game at all?? In the first game, we had Ruvik, who created STEM and were well-written as a big villain. Leslie was also an important character, who has extraordinary power for STEM system. Both Mobius and Ruvik tried really hard to get Leslie. But in TEW2, both Ruvik and Leslie suddenly vanishes from the main story?? Like they never existed? It was really weird and I felt bad for them. And Joseph's absence in TEW2 was also weird. Him and Seb were portrayed as partners in crime in TEW1, but TEW2 Seb acts like he have never seen Joseph. It was sad to see him being ignored throughout the game (I know about the last slide but it's definitely not enough).

So just for the story and characterization I have many complaints about this game, but gameplay was also disappointing in TEW2. Sure gameplay got a bit smoother than TEW1, which is an improvement I guess, but other than that… I can't say anything good about the gameplay in TEW2. The enemy AI was dumb and open-world section was just dull. It wasn't tense as the first game and it felt like I'm playing some UBI games. Don't get me wrong I like UBI games, but I don't want such gameplay in Evil Within series.

    So overall. Not recommend.

No game should have unavoidable boss attacks. Especially when they take away half your health. And on top of that, it instantly becomes a clip of you being attacked when the boss gets near, making it feel less like a game that I can control. How does that make sense?

Seriously, this game is a really bad sequel... The first game had such a good foundation for the future of this franchise and like, Evil Within 2 just threw it into the trash can.

Probably the worst survival-horror game on PS4. It' not scary, it's not tense. The story is so badly written and the gameplay is boring because all you have to do is stealth. And most importantly, this game doesn't feel like The Evil Within.

The Evil Within 2 feels like an homage to bad/mediocre 2006 horror movies. The writing in the first 3 chapters is some of the cringiest dialogue I have ever heard in the last few years of gaming. The Evil Within was difficult to score. It was unevenly paced, had too many parts that were a tad too frustrating, some areas went on for too long and outstayed their welcome, the difficulty was all over the place – and let's not even talk about its protagonist who was slower than a turtle on Prozac, had the constitution of a spry 90 year old and controlled like a tank with gearbox damage. But it was incredibly inventive, original, varied and oozing with atmosphere, and that goes a long way in my book.

The sequel, however, throws everything that made the original special overboard. I don't know why John Johanas thought getting rid of a strong narrative and taking the open world approach was a good idea, or why he thought that crafting was just what this game needed. But okay, I can get on board with that – but why did this open world have to be so bafflingly boring? After the intro you end up in Union, a virtual small town that, apart from a couple of bits and pieces floating around, is entirely unremarkable. It's perfectly acceptable as a first world – but you stay there. For hours. And hours. And then a couple of hours more. You HAVE to sink some hours into it, actually, because the difficulty does have some bite, so you need to scour every corner of the whole town in search for scraps, ammo and weapon parts. But that means that you have to spend countless hours in one location that apart from some hardly imaginative exceptions could easily be confused with the real world. The enemies are – what else? – boring zombie-like creatures that come in a few variations, and that's what you get for the majority of the game.

Considering that the concept of the game, the Inception- and Matrix-inspired STEM, opens up any possibility you can think of, any location, any enemy, the severe lack of variety is the game's biggest shortcoming. Sneaking through Union doesn't feel different from a couple of minutes in The Last Of Us, only in The Last Of Us you had strong characters, a strong narrative, great controls, environments oozing with character and lots of variation. TEW2 has neither of those, just a boring town with a couple of boring houses you can enter. Everything's so terribly mundane around here. The first game bombarded you with cool ideas and took you to a great variety of locations. This one sure doesn't. I didn't even know that going in, since I'd avoided reviews, only to wonder more and more why the first world took soooooo frigging long. Turns out, that's pretty much most of the game.

Seriously, I can't comprehend how this game gets so much leniency from gamers. This is like having to stay for eight hours in Skyrim's Windhelm, or The Last Of Us' University, or Red Dead Redemption's Gaptooth Ridge, or GTA 5's Sandy Shores. Sure, every hour or two something marginally interesting happens, but it never lasts long, and you go back to your boring small town.

Oh, one more thing. If you expect a survival horror game to, you know, creep you out from time to time or make you go, "Wow, that's cool!" – yeah, no such luck here. By the time I faced the first boss, I was so bored out of my mind, I couldn't even appreciate what in a much, much better paced game would've felt commendable. If you're looking for an original experience, I'd recommend the first game which gave you more variety in its first 30 minutes than this game in its entirety.

Credit where credit is due, though: No frustrating parts the first one loved to thow at you, and the sneaking, combat and exploration can be fun – at least for half an hour. I could have given TEW2 an average rating, but since it presents itself as the first game's successor, it asks me to compare the two, and this one is so much worse in almost every respect that I just can't. An okay rental, but a really bad buy.

Sadly, this game is not as fun or interesting as the first game. We can clearly feel that they ran out of time, money and ideas in the development.

What happened to that game? First part was almost perfect game. All great atmosphere from first game is gone. Gameplay try to copy The Last Of Us, but it's not even close. Overall, it's not Evil Within sequel as we expected. And in top of all, you fight 2-3 bosses whole game all over again.

Cons: Myriad. The game starts poorly with the protagonist running into his burning house to try and save his doomed daughter, Lilly. Storytelling-101 reminds writers and audiences alike that you should never cold-open in the middle of a tragedy when the characters are unestablished. It turns out that this is a nightmare our drunken, aged hero is having in a bar. Our protagonist, Sebastian Castellanos, not only looks just like the protagonist Joel from The Last of Us, but he has the same Call-to-Adventure: guilt over a dead daughter.

Tragic deaths of wives and daughters are routinely used to kick off terrible action movies. No story should be burdened by these cliches, and god have mercy on terrible writers ripping off the least interesting premises of better stories! TEW2 doubles down on these sins by revealing that our protagonist's burn-victim daughter is in a comatose state and has been subversively used by an EVIL CORPORATION to power a virtual reality that has descended into a nightmare. This is the premise of the [also much better, despite latter entries] series, Silent Hill! The convoluted solution to this stupid problem is that the protagonist must go INCEPTION on his daughter and rescue the swat team that is trapped with her.

There is no way to get invested in a game that rips off the dumbest parts of better games and movies. Beyond the sins of the plot, the main character suffers from Leon S. Kennedy-Syndrome, where he wonders "what the hell is going on?" every 5 minutes for the entire game. Castellanos is committed to making sure the player has no chance to wonder about the setting for themselves because he either wonders for us or another character has to explain everything.

The gameplay is as boring as the story. Castellanos moves like a tank on a rusty swivel. With the exception of a couple of bosses, enemies are uninteresting. The player is uninvested in the characters so the stakes never feel real and fear never comes, with possible exception of a few jump scares.

Shinji Mikami’s philosophy is to focus on making the game’s good aspects shine even brighter instead of trying to eradicate its flaws. His latest work both benefits and suffers from that approach. The Evil Within 2 offers great exploration, but its story is laughable. It’s a thrilling shooter, but a mediocre stealth game. At the end of the day I find Mikami to be right – a game’s best moments count the most and make us turn a blind eye to its flaws. TEW2 fails to reach the level of my beloved Resident Evil 4, but in today’s circumstances a triple AAA survival horror without online components and intrusive microtransactions is a gem.
