Trivia games are an often underrepresented genre in the gaming marketplace. With so few players in the market it’s refreshing to see another option released at a much more casual-friendly price point. That Trivia Game is the PS4′s first foray into the trivia genre and it does so at the very reasonable $9.99 price.

When it comes to trivia games, the primary concern is that there won’t be enough questions to avoid regulary repeating questions. On this front, That Trivia Game passed with flying colors. Throughout all my playthroughs, I never once saw a repeated question. Nothing makes a newcomer to a trivia game feel as disadvantaged as realizing that the people you are playing against have already memorized the answers from previous playthroughs. With numerous categories for players to choose from each round you would have to play for a very long time to get to the point where you had played through the games over 1,000 questions. The questions are up to date, with Game of Thrones even getting a nod, and nicely walk that balance between being too easy and insanely obscure. The average person should be able to get most of the questions right, but still get stumped occasionally.
The game allows you to choose between four characters to play as, with multiple colored outfits for each one. You also get to choose your buzzer sound, which is very reminiscent of Buzz Quiz TV’s startup options. The action takes place over four rounds with different game types for each. They are all pretty standard fare, but the ability to choose a category provides some much needed variety. The game could have benefited from the option to play a short or a long game mode as the four rounds seems a bit short most of the time.
The game’s announcer manages to avoid becoming annoying in spite of some repetitious phrases. He even manages to get the occasional laugh with an out of the blue funny comment. I wouldn’t consider him a high point of the game but I have experienced much worse trivia announcers from similar offerings on the PS3.
My major gripe with the game is the complete lack of online multiplayer. While it is probably more fun to play with friends and family on your couch anyway, that doesn’t help much when you are home alone. The game’s computer opponent does do an admirable job of rubber banding to stay within your score range without being frustratingly hard to beat, but it still would have been nice to be able to play against friends online.
The games graphics are nothing to write home about; as is typical of the trivia genre. There was one major graphical decision that I found particularly annoying as I was playing though. Before each round, the view of the contestants is shown from slightly further away and is intentionally blurry. Your view clears up as it zooms in, but the effect made it seem like there was a problem with the TV rather than that you were just naturally getting a clearer view the closer you got. It only lasts a couple of seconds but it is long enough to be noticeable.
Ultimately, That Trivia Game succeeds in providing a fun time for you and up to three of your friends at an affordable price. Personally, this is the first game that my wife would play with me on the PS4, so that’s a win in my book. Anytime a game can bring family members together for a good old-fashioned battle of the minds, that is a worthwhile endeavor.… Expand
