Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan why is it bad? Bad example: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is ugly, the gameplay was very boring without Skins no Local Online and Bad Design.
Good example: the bosses are tough and the humor is decent. As if it was the: worst TMNT game.

I was pleasantly surprised and it's not just my love for TMNT that has kept me playing, the game really is more than just a shallow cash in. I'll start with the gameplay which is fluid and actually quite addictive. Movement and combat with each turtle is unique and rewarding with many different ways of taking down opponents. (Stealth, ranged or aggressive.) There are even combos you can achieve with two or more turtles. You can also block and parry etc. Boss battles are epic and even on normal difficulty can be challenging. This is where you turtle builds and usage of ninjutsu skills are so important.

Each turtle has their own 'build' if you will, which is divided into two catergories. First is called Ninjutsu skills, which are abilities/moves you can assign to each turtle. These are the most powerful moves in the game and can be upgraded with x amount of orbs. Orbs are gained either from collecting them during missions, killing mobs, getting multiple hit combos, completing quests etc. You spend these orbs on either acquiring/upgrading Ninjutsu or buying items from Splinter. Items are consumables that get assigned to the d-pad, like grenades, pizza health, turrets etc.

The next build category is charms. Charms are items you acquire as mission rewards. Charms give your turtle passive bonuses - like 5% extra melee damage, or 10% poison damage etc. Up to three charms can be equipped on a turtle depending on your level. Having charms that compliment your Ninjutsu skills will make your turtles even more powerful. When it comes to build depth, its no Skyrim by any means, but its pretty decent for a beat em up.

The visuals and art style suit the game and franchise very well. Cell shaded graphics do a good job of portraying the feel and mood of the game. Kind of like Borderlands, it has a comedic charm to it. Speaking of comedy, the dialogue between the turtles in cut scenes and the gestures they do when going afk will crack a smile. The story pretty much follows the second movie about Krang joining forces with Shredder to open up an inter-dimensional portal into our realm. Nothing fancy, just a reason to beat baddies up.

The only issues I have with this game is the lack of couch coop. Two player coop would have been awesome. The only coop you get is online. Also the level design is a bit meh or generic but doesn't detract too much from the fun. Otherwise this game has been an absolute blast, I am on the final level and will definitely replay it on a higher difficulty once my turtles are upgraded a bit more.

Another blemish on PlatinumGames once spotless record. It's got the fan service thanks to it's roster of familiar TMNT bad guys and allows you to play as four turtles on the fly. However the execution here is just off. The story is bland, but there's some humorous turtle banter to keep you from skipping the cutscenes.

The gameplay is a jumbled, thrown together mess. With all four turtles being onscreen at the same time the action is just too cluttered. I often found myself losing track of the turtles I was playing as. In their previously lackluster games, like The Legend of Korra for example, even when everything else was falling short Platinum at least created an enjoyable combat system to back things up. That isn't the case here.

It's not actually bad, but there's no reason to do anything more than button mash. It's not a challenging game at all, especially since the other turtles are always around to back you up. I have to praise their AI. You aren't just babysitting the brothers here. They are completely competent on their own and do a great job of having your back.

The co-op aspect of the game is also appreciated. It's online-only, but getting together with some buddies can make bring a few hours of laughs before the credits roll, and I do mean only a few hours. This isn't a lengthy game at all and I breezed through it in no time.

Almost the whole experience follows a simple formula. You're dropped off into a semi-open area and play randomized missions until the boss shows up. These boss fights are the meat of the game. The rest of the stuff just feels like filler to extend the length of the game. The bosses themselves require no more strategy then the regular, bland enemies. Just blow your way through them mashing buttons. It's cool to see some familiar faces though.

It also helps that these faces look good. The environments are a little bland, but the characters themselves look great. It definitely looks like a TMNT show or comic book. However the bright and colorful cell-shaded graphics only add to the visual noise of the gameplay. Much of the action isn't just obscured by the other characters, but by the bright flashes of color as well.

Given that it's so short, Platinum tried to add some replay value. They did so with the pre-boss fight missions being random and throwing some secret boss fights a second time around. However both efforts are kind of lackluster. The missions themselves might be different, but they all follow the same handful of types. The secret boss battles basically just come down to one of them being joined by another character. I personally didn't fin the experience fun enough the first time around to bother with a second playthrough. I imagine many will feel the same way.

PlatinumGames falls into the familiar licensed game trapping with this one. Gone is the sense of originality and innovation that made their original IPs so darn good. It's rushed, thrown together, and all around sloppy. It's got some minor thrills thanks to the license, and there's a certain mindless appeal to slicing through cool villains brainlessly pushing buttons and firing off rechargeable special attacks. Bringing together some friends can make for a lazy afternoon gaming session. However none of that changes the fact that Platinum didn't really try with this one. They just slapped their name and the TMNT brand on a mediocre product. Even hardcore TMNT fans should give this one a hard pass.

I thought the game was quite fun to play, I liked the art style and it's amazing the difference between being able to bottom mash and pay limited attention on Easy to playing on Very Hard and actually having to play the game. The online co-op is good, however I would have preferred a local co-op option. Good trip down memory lane with the turtles.

It's a fun game for any TMNT fan.

Better than the 2003 TMNT games (also the Ubisoft and Activision era) but worse than the '90 Konami games. However if you hate the new comic/cartoon style or simply you seek for a Turtles in Time in 3D this is not the game for you.

The sad part is that there are some neat ideas, like customizing the turtles with new skills and changing the one you control on the fly. But not giving this game a local co-op is a complete travesty. I tried to find some people online, without any success. At most, I found one person. It appears nobody is playing this game anymore.

And, really, what's the point? You enter a boring map, with repetitive missions then fight a boss with one million HP. Rinse, repeate. This is a mediocre, sad excuse of a game that nobody should play, no matter how into TMNT you are.

I made this mistake. Don't do it.

But one thing I am is an oldschool gamer, and I can just tell that Platinum actually put alot of love into this game. It might come off as lazy to some people but its sprinkled with stuff from previous games "such as bomb diffusion and Hideouts hidden in the NES game, as well alot of the enemy types are straight from "Turtles in Time." Bombers, sword elites, and others.

Visuals- I see alot of flak for the visuals, but people have to remember that its based and licensed on a cartoon that Nick is currently producing. and to me, the game looks great really. They aren't the same turtles as the nick turtles, but they are more colorful and pop to attract kids along with have a slightly gritter appearance.

Gameplay- I've heard a variety of things about this, stretching from its too chaotic to its too simple and I just mashed buttons. I've played it on normal and I've had a pretty good time. So much infact it makes me wonder what critics are talking about, though I've only played in single player and I can say it probably gets more interesting if you play with others online. Couch co-op would be nice but I don't think it really detracts too much to see the scores its getting. Its a basic beat em up, strong and light attack combinations can lead to a few interesting moves I prefer to lay as Mikey and watch him airkick people to send them flying. Along with 2 attack buttons you can hold the Left 2 button to preform cooldown moves as well as hit the r1 button to throw shurikens, there are also gadgets that you can use like suction bombs which are pretty fun but aren't usually needed at all. the cooldown moves can range from hooking up with one of the other turtles and then preforming a ridiculous attack that makes all the enemies dance, to slowing down time, to spinning around invulnerably. The cooldowns can be customized and upgraded for a shop currency as you level up. You can also complete feats to unlock medals and equip charms to the turtles to make them stronger.

There are 9 stages each with 1 boss and maybe some secret side bosses elites, as well as the stages have random goals set to lead you to the end of the stage. The goals are pretty linear, but again its a beat em up in nature that's pretty much what you should expect from this kind of game. I touched on it earlier all the missions are just really a love letter to the rest of the games in the past, you defuse bombs or defend your team as they try to defend the bomb sometimes you may all need to get on the bomb to defuse it quicker, along with that you can hack terminals, stealth mission enemies, recover stolen items, or defeat enemies, all with a time limit.

The Bosses start off easy they have 7 health bars and as you widdle them down they get harder; eventually the bosses start to glow red another classic staple from the past and that's when they are at their hardest.

The game isn't bad not as a regular game not as a licensed game I bought it at my bestbuy for 40 dollars with my discount. And for fans of the ninja turtles you will probably love the game don't listen to the negative reviews. That said... don't play it if you plan on playing it with people in your house, it doesn't do that, but you can play it online.

Now to the game; the gameplay is your typical hack n slash, button touch and combos. cool! right? but with upgrade skill leveling automated and be able to only switch characters for different levels or if you die within in the level it will automatically switch to another character is a downfall, I rather be able to pick which turtle i’am after i die. The missions are short and the bosses have no challenging factor giving that you have 5 lives for the whole game in which every turtle has to die in order for you to lose a life. Thats suck? Not at all it’s an easy game. However, the comic like graphics are pretty cool and color scheme for the combat is pretty neat, given that the game is a drag and really really short and has poor level design. Besides my rant; multiplayer with your friends is the way to go, playing alone can get old (well not really with how short the missions are) but this is not worth your money unless your looking for quick game for you and your friends to play. 6.7/10 Expand

Mutants in Manhattan in an open worldish beat em up staring the ninja turtles…
At first I was really impressed with this game..
You can climb up any and every wall.. You can use your shell to float across the Manhattan sky...
You can find charms to boost health and skills...
Spend points on new moves and freely level up these special moves as well as customize the 4 turtles specials in any way you please…
You can also freely switch through the 4 turtles at any time…
Unfortunately, after level 1 of 9, you’ve practically seen it all…
Every stage has its own boss…
To get to a boss you have to complete random tasks that pop up in these pretty dull open levels…
There is really nothing more to it than randomly take out these bad guys.. Protect this item... pick up that item and take it there... defuse the bombs... rinse and repeat for every level
There is no redeemable qualities in the gameplay…
Not even 4 player online co-op can save it, as it’s the same thing but with friends…
it’s flat out boring and monotonous…
Just wait for a call… go to the spot the activity is taking place... collect some green orbs for combat boosts, weapons, or health…
And do this until you’re told to go to the boss’s layer...
The boss fights are appreciated… it’s nice to see such a variety of characters... but only a couple feel different than the rest…
But all 9 really come down to just spamming attacks until their 5 life meters drain…
Which brings me to the trophies and achievements...
There are a handful that require certain shots during the brief second snap shots are taken after a boss is defeated…
these trophies are near impossible and I can’t see anyone getting any joy out of hunting for this games platinum…
The best part of this game is hands down the cut scenes..
At the very least they exist...
But the story and humor is poorly written…
Just your predictable beat all the bad guys then beat the baddest of the bad guys, the end.
I give Teenage mutant ninja turtles: Mutants in Manhattan
