Tales From The Borderlands have every quality you would expect from an interactive series, because yes, if you're not into this kind of experience, half-way between traditional videogames and movies, do not buy any Telltale game.

Now if you're still interested by this review let's go back to the qualities of this particular game and they are many. First if you're familiar with the Borderlands franchise you may wonder how an open-world game based on loot and co-op will be when very story focused. Well it was awesome, the guys from Telltale truly respected the work made by Gearbox with many references and characters from the previous games and a main story that follow the events of Borderlands 2 providing new awesome characters (I hope some of them will be in an expected Borderlands 3), they also keep the same graphic art than the original games, which makes Tales From The Borderlands the best looking Telltale game by far.

The five episodes are full of hilarious jokes, epic and moving moments, the wait between each episode was very long thanks to nice cliffhangers, it really was an intense experience, you'll never be bored playing this game. My only complaint is that (like most Telltale games) choices have only minor repercussions, all the big events stay the same, but hey at least there is some changes.

Finally the length of the game is pretty reasonable, approximately 12 hours for 20€/$ it's cheaper than 5 movies in a theater (in France at least) or many videogames sold 70 €/$ and sometimes shorter. Tales From The Borderlands is the best game Telltale made since the season 1 of Walking Dead and is a shiny example of how great an interactive story can be.

Easily the best Telltale game I have played. It really captures the spirit of borderlands. Tales from the Borderlands is a game I recommend playing a chapter per night. They'll run you about 2 hours each, think of it as watching an interactive movie each night. The game has it's share of hilarious moments, and share of emotional ones. I picked this up for $5 on sale, what an absolute steal. Tales from the Borderland is an engaging game from Telltale. The story is gripping, and it does not feel like you only cruise through the game. The game has some of the funniest Telltale games. The game also does a good job with the usage of the inventory which several of the other Telltale games fails.

Furthermore, you earn the platinum trophy/100% of the achievements simply by playing the game (no tedious collectibles or missables.) The only flaw (which is very minor and therefore only a 1 point deduction) is the fact that occasionally the conversations are a little awkward. This is because you make a dialogue decision but the characters just breeze past it because the plot is progressing no matter what you choose and the illusion of choice occasionally fades away. Overall, high quality point-and-click story from telltale games that you should play. Right now, chapter 1 is free on psn! Expand

The directing is awesome, some scenes were just jaw-dropping good.

Nice Telltale game but not something that set my world on fire. At the very least, the cartoonish style of Borderlands lends itself well to the woefully outdated engine used by Telltale. At best, this is one of the funniest games in recent years. Overall a good package but not quite the must have I kept hearing it would be.

As a story based game, this game is dependent on the story. The overall plot is a good one. Just when it seemed that the protagonists were habitually getting captured, the series makes a 180 degree turn and goes full on action. The game has some genuinely funny moments but they were spread far too thin for me to praise this game for its humor. The writing could have been more absurdist. As far as the branching storyline goes, there only a few options to change the story and no big choices such as who to save. In the end, I found myself agreeing with other players in the 90% range most of the time. Contrast this to a game like Life Is Strange where the "good" ending is only a few percentage points over the "bade" ending.

The controls for the action portions of the game are mostly fine and I found myself making only two unintentional choices because I took too long or hit the wrong button. Generally, I would have preferred slower paced decision making game. This isn't an action game and I would rather enjoy the story than have the controller ready in case the conversation ended with a quick-time event. Maybe Telltale thought they should amp up the action because this game is based on a first person shooter franchise.

As I noted above, the choices did not seem to matter much. One surprise, however, was that only 17% of players unlocked ClapTrap. I think if they had known this was an option, they would have picked ClapTrap for the humor factor. I imagine their games were less fun in the end. Mostly, though, the decision is whether to make snarky comments or whether to make douchey comments. Having played The Walking Dead season 1, this choices seemed very limited. Maybe I'll give the game another playthrough some day, when I've forgotten much of it and the jokes will be fresh again.

Full disclosure here: I paid $2.50 for this game in a PSN Flash Sale. It later went free with PS Plus.

I literally played the whole game with a smile on my face cause the jokes just keep coming (and that isn't a bad thing). It's not the funniest game I have ever played, that title goes to South Park: The Stick of Truth, but it does come in at a close second.
