SuperMash is an unfortunate example of a concept working better on paper than in execution. Whilst the mashing system is fun to mess around with and watch the first few times, that magic quickly wears off and all you’re left with is the poorest imitations of great game genres.

Not only are the mashes repetitive, they're also very short, shallow, and often just plain bad. Sometimes frustrating, sometimes too easy, sometimes impossible -- the randomised nature of mashing hurts more than it helps. Sadly, the novel concept isn't backed up by the execution required to make it work. While some of the mashes show some fun combinations of genre tropes, the majority of what you'll play in SuperMash is a bit of a mess.

The animation is pretty horrible, reminiscent of something straight out of a Nick Jr. cartoon. The story is beyond cringe. But let's dive into the minigames. Absolutely zero effort, poor sprite and map design, laziness all around the board. The music is atrocious. The supposed mashes consist of you fighting airplanes in a turn based battle. That's supposed to the JRPG+Shoot Em Up combo. Hence, the developers presented the game on false advertising. It does not MASH genres, it just takes one element from a genre and puts it into the game. Like getting into turn based battles on a platformer. $20 dollars is insanely expensive for this pile of garbage, especially since the game bombed on PC before it's console release. You would think they'd lower the price then, but nope. And here's the kicker: the developers delete any negative opinion about the game on their Reddit. That is highly unprofessional. In all honesty, I feel that this game is a scam. It is not right for developers to deceive gamers with false advertising, deliver a broken crappy product, and charge a high price for it. Did I mention all of the mashes run below 30 FPS? Please do not support shovelware scammers like Digital Continue. The game is a major scam, and it is most definitely NOT fun. I'd rather watch paint dry while shoving a pencil into my eyeballs. Full Review »

Hey all, it's your friendly neighborhood PS4 guy. We are here today with something interesting. A mish-mash of ideas, a game shop simulator. A tale of dreams and games. Allow me to ask have you ever thought "man this game could use more JRPG to it? Or this platformer could be more stealthy? Well, I've got a mash-up for you!

Super mash is a game about mixing genres in new ways to make new types of games. This is mixed in with a sim style like a game. You play as Tomo who is with his game shop owning sister, at a garage sale where they find a game-changing device. This device allows two game carts to be used to make new games blending traits of them with one another. There is a neat little story attached to this in the form of use this to make games to save the game shop.

Super mash is very much a more serious Wario ware game but with a bit more depth and control over the games. For example, you could cross Metroidvania with a JRPG and get things you expect. Say for example turn-based combat or platform-style movement. Then again you may get something new such as a basic Metroidvania with action combat that uses an ATB gauge! How about a shoot'em up with turn-based battles or a platformer with an airship. The possibility is endless with the following genre: JRPG, action-adventure, shoot'em up, stealth and platformer. Further yet you can share the results with hash codes and even save the ones you love. There is a way to customize your games with characters and enemies even items you have as you play these games. The story is just interesting enough to kinda follow. The games themselves are only a small taste of the full potential of what could be. All of these are self-contained to achieve a goal of small miniature games. (not mini-games just really really really short)

Graphically the style is charming for the sim part of the game. It is kind of like Saturday morning cartoon meets the sims 2. The games you mash range quite a bit from the player character to the background greatly. All of the elements won't all nostalgic up and can b 8 bit too as much as 32 bit in style.its all very charming and the names and looks of all of characters and stages very much fit a trope. The games you create have their own tracks that are very...what you might expect for the genre. That said, it all sounds good and has that retro feel.

Normally I would have talked about gameplay and controls, however, it's all to unique to Really pin down until you see it yourself.

    Pros:
    awesome concept

    Great graphics

    Cute and nostalgic

    Cons:
potential is kind of wasted on the shorter game style.

Could have added another genre or two.

With this all said I give this game a final rating of:
    8.5/10

super mash is a hell of a concept it has sooooo much potential. For sure worth checking out especially if you like a bit of everything. Here is hoping for a sequel with long-form design in mind. Digital Continue Is now officially on my radar.
