    Star Trek: Resurgence is a remarkable narrative adventure game set in a classic space opera universe. I’m incredibly impressed by its scope and the well-written story it conveys. Like an interactive Star Trek show, Resurgence is a game where your decisions have a real impact. I enjoyed playing this title even as I acknowledge the weak points holding it back, mainly its graphical hiccups. Still, Star Trek fans should give Star Trek: Resurgence a try, though, as should any adventure game fans who like sci-fi too. I hope this isn’t the last we see of the U.S.S. Resolute and her crew!

    I’m genuinely disappointed. Star Trek seems perfect for a narrative-heavy adventure game, and Star Trek Resurgence’s bugs, design, and QTEs keep people from getting properly invested. I don’t regret my time with the game, and I did enjoy the tale it told. However it’s executed in such a sloppy fashion and littered with issues that draws a player’s attention away from what matters.

    Despite its tight writing and a clear love for the franchise, Dramatic Labs misses the mark with Star Trek: Resurgence. A mountain of bugs, a lack of polish, and tedious interactive moments mar an otherwise promising experience.

    Not even Resurgence’s nearest spiritual ancestors, classic ’90s point-and-click adventures Star Trek 25th Anniversary or Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Final Unity, have captured that essential human element that makes for a great Star Trek story. Resurgence ties a worthwhile cast of characters to an interstellar adventure. Does Resurgence qualify as “great Star Trek”? Probably not, but it’s hard to argue that any video game has come closer.

Unfortunately, it's a pretty average video game full of technical glitches that seem to take place at the worse possible times most of the time.

    Graphically, the game is fine. It's not particularly impressive, but it's not bad looking either. It's exactly what I expect out of an indie game like this. Framerate is fine and doesn't usually relate directly to the glitchiness. The sound however glitches in and out and repeats sometimes when it's supposed to be saying something else, making it difficult to follow elements of the story when this happens. This is particularly irritating given how important the story is in this type of game. It doesn't happen super often, but it happens often enough to be noticable, maybe once every few chapters. I've gotten one or two graphical glitches as well, but those usually aren't as distracting or noticable.

    The story is VERY good and the characters are enjoyable. If you've played a Telltale game before, this should be quite familiar to you as that's where the developers used to work. However, while I personally had trouble getting into Telltale games like Batman and The Walking Dead, I had no issues really diving into Star Trek Resurgence. The story was very good, engaging and kept me wanting to keep playing to find out more about what was going on. The characters are well developed with interesting relationships and dynamics. I think any fan of Star Trek will REALLY enjoy this game and I did find myself losing track of time as I played as the game had me hooked. As far as gameplay goes, I really only have one complaint and that's the use of the R2 trigger as a primary button for selecting things when exploring. It seems like a bit of an odd choice and it doesn't make it clear that is the button to use for that. Given that literally no other game does this, a prompt to let you know would have been appreciated.

    All in all, I'm just slightly disappointed. There is the makings of a very good game here and I think if they delayed it a few more months, they could have polished it into something really special that Star Trek fans would consider to be essential to the franchise. It's sad that I'm giving such a low score to a game that really did have me hooked, but I can not ignore the at times odd controls, constant bugs and technical glitches. The story is very good and I think most big fans of Star Trek like myself would be willing to power through to enjoy what's there, but the more casual Star Trek fan who also enjoys video games will probably want to skip this one, at least for now. Perhaps in the future there will be patches that can help fix this game and really make it great, but until then it's got the makings of something great, held back by a lack of polish.    … Full Review »

    However much like what is happening with gaming right now, games are becoming too much for this generation (IE PS4 version) to handle. I have a launch generation PS4 and it sputters and dies right at the end game. Which for a low resolution, low action type of game like the walking dead, this is inexcusable when examples like Elden Ring run flawlessly on the same hardware. So there is an issue of it not being adequately optimized for this era of hardware for which it is still being sold on the playstation store.

    That technical flaw aside the actual game is solid and feels like a "long trek" level quality of story telling.

    Which also raises the point. Some trek fans are going to hate it because ultimately there is conflict and that drama is between crew members and when ever that happens the fabled "Gene's Vision" comes flying out.

    Personally I do not find that to be a flaw. It puts the story on par with stories we saw in DS9 and to some extent in STD

    The game is far from perfect either. Certain sections drag on. Other sections are just not fun. Namely the tricorder sections.

    Yet for the in game technical flaws are offset a bit for just how ambitious this game is. Cause there are many different mechanics interacting here which in turn gives it a feel more like an actual episode would play out.

    tl;dr Ambitious start for a platform of similar games in the series. Needs some polish both technically and narratively but an enjoyable experience. We need about 5 more of these. Possibly with another ship and crew. Possibly in another part of the timeline. Again its an amazing platform for what trek story telling can be.    … Full Review »

Technically, there is more than enough blatant jankiness across all possible elements of the player experience to harm review scores and general appraisals for most people. There are also multiple instances of poor dialogue, cringeworthy writing, baffling character decisions, and even a couple of flat-out grammatical errors.

    However, by the halfway point none of these issues really mattered. The game engaged me 100% by presenting believable, competent, professional characters who by the later stages I found myself genuinely caring about. I can honestly say that this is the first Star Trek product I've experienced in fifteen years that actually felt like true Star Trek (with Picard season 3 coming very close across some of its running time).

    In addition, Resurgence is at least three times longer than I expected, and during the last third opened up into so many surprisingly awe-iinducing locations and action set pieces that by the time it was over I felt like I had played through a great action RPG, rather than a visual novel.

    It is not perfect by any means, and there are at least a couple of critical moments in the story where better writers would have seized on the opportunity to steer the plot in a diretion that could have elevated it to a mainstream all-time classic. Nonetheless, there is more than enough here to please and satisfy Star Trek fans, if they stick with it and forgive the occasional stumbling here and there and have the patience to let the dev studio patch and optimise everything properly.    … Full Review »
