I'm one of the weird freaks that loved Spelunker on the NES. I used to play this one on the PS3 and I've always kept it installed all these years. Now that this one is out I'm super happy, this is one of my favorite beer games. It's fun to watch your motor skills decline over the hours and start falling in pits, bombing yourself, falling off ropes then you know you're sufficiently trashed.I'm one of the weird freaks that loved Spelunker on the NES. I give it a ten because they got everything right. The game physics are exact and all the new additions are awesome.

I should add that I'm not some expert player either, I die a lot. There's so many people on the online rankings that it's obvious I'm a low-class peasant in the skill department. I think I was about 44 levels in on the PS3 version and I'm down to the 3rd area in this one. Once it clicks you can really get your groove on and keep moving down. There's been a few areas where I screwed myself and missed a key or something, but I've always been able to recover after a lot of reloading and figuring out where I need to go. So that sucks when it happens but most of the time I get that Dark Souls progression satisfaction as I keep plowing through the levels.

Spelunker HD Deluxe brings an awful lot to the table. Using the blueprint of an old favourite, Tozai Games have delivered dozens of levels with some modern visuals. It does look smarter and a little sharper but the old challenge remains. It controls reasonably well but the memory-heavy nature of the levels will put some players off. With few options available to tweak difficulty or add lives, you're left with an authentic, if divisive experience. Multiplayer does allow you to bring friends along for the ride too.

People like to call games the Dark Souls of whatever but Dark Souls is the Spelunker of action RPGs. With gratifying gameplay that constantly makes you stay on your toes, I'm very happy that this classic is back and it's more fully-featured than ever before.

Spelunker HD does everything a remaster should do, improving the gameplay and challenge of the 1983 original. But its biggest downfall is being a remaster for Spelunker, a platformer with very archaic mechanics, made for a specific type of audience. There is magic between the hours of suffering, but there are several titles in this genre that provide this type of challenge in a more competent manner.
