Despite a few niggles, Space Otter Charlie is a delightful, creative and fun game. There’s so many old school influences shining through here – a splash of family friendly Conkers humour, a structure similar to classic Zelda, traversal that feels like a modern day take on the Spectrum classic Jet Pac – that this game reminds me of the ‘good ol’ days’. If you’re in the mood for an old school action platformer game that benefits from modern day games design, this is the one.

The small three-person team at developer Wayward Distractions has delivered one of the cutest games of the year, but it’s not just for kids. It’s not a punishing precision platformer by any stretch, but it isn’t easy either and it managed to be fun even in the more difficult sections.

Frame-rate stutters when you pick thing up etc. No challenge just bad controls that cannot be changed: Jet pack button X, Gun Square button so you need to press both at same time to fire when flying, while triggers or right stick not used for gun instead. Pushing objects is slower than you could ever imagine slow to be, there's loading screens after every small level. The stick to any object you touch mechanic further slows the game, it's almost like they did tedious things deliberate to pad out the timescale. It feels more like swimming in water than using a jet pack in space. You otter know people, this Charlie is a flash game weasel. Expand
