Space Hulk: Tactics is the most impressive Warhammer 40K effort I've played in recent memory.

Space Hulk: Tactics is probably the best video game adaption of the classic board game yet, with decent presentation and some welcome additions. But the faithfulness of its adaption only highlights the limited tactics offered by the board game's basic setup, and its lower budget makes for a lack of polish in some areas. Strategy buffs may be diverted for a bit, but won't fall in love.

True to the world of Warhammer 40.000, Space Hulk: Tactics is a cool tactical-RPG but it never surprised us, because of its many very classical mechanics.

While it isn’t going to be blowing the doors off of the tactical strategy genre, Space Hulk: Tactics is a perfectly adequate game. Thanks to a solid combat engine, good writing, twin-headed campaign, and level designer, players will certainly be getting their monies worth for the forty-dollar price tag.

A good adaptation of the board game. Especially designed for the fans of the saga, but challenging enough to attract new followers.

A faithful board game adaptation that lacks the depth to grab you in its power fist and not let go. [Issue#336, p.83]

If you have a soft spot for the Space Hulk board game, this title is a no-brainer. If you're new to the Space Hulk franchise it might seem that this game is extremely slow and boring and very difficult to boot. The official rule set is adhered to closely which results in some tense games, partly because of the elevated difficulty. Load times are pretty long however and the on-screen texts are barely legible. The graphics are very dark and grey which makes for poor visibility from time to time.

Tactics makes the most of its medium with neat battle animations and a variety of view modes, but it’s no substitute for shouting at a friend across the table. [Issue#157, p.88]

I reckon Space Hulk: Tactics sinks well with the target demographic but it makes no effort to convert non-believers to join the Imperial cause. The fact that it works as well as it does, goes solely down to the original board game. Outside it, it’s just not attractive or appealing enough. Maybe that’s the reason there was no online activity going on during the review period, no matter what time of day I tried to seek out opponents. Playing Space Hulk in the real life with local opponents is a true social occasion - something that Space Hulk: Tactics can’t achieve.

It's difficult to rate for various reasons but I rated it on the low scale of where I thought a fair rating would be. The first thing I'd like to say this is an adaptation of the board game, which I never played but other reviewers state it's a faithful adaptation and I can buy into that as I looked up the ruleset and it appears spot on. The first thing that I find I want to criticize is the presentation. It has some noticeable pauses loading and also headscratching input lag after certain button actions. The lag is so long it can make you wonder if you actually pressed your controls. Camera is sufficient and you can toggle between overhead and first person. First person is cool however being a strategic game I think it would have been much more important to have a zoomable camera instead. Objects which are linked such as controls to doors are revealed by toggling to a different map and to be honest I found it very messy and not easily discernible. Other games do a much better job with similar features and needs. Gameplay tutorials are also too basic. As you learn what the game requires it could have had better overviews of all the games features. For example, as a noob I didn't know where the consoles to doors were. Some doors activate by interaction in front of them, others require a console placed some distance away from the map. True you learn as you go but much of the games complexity unfolds one step ahead of any tutorial that could have been there to enjoy the game more. Remember what I said about a zoomable camera? I found out way into my playthrough you actually can zoom in. The end result is essentially playing the game initially to understand it then a second time to actually play but it feels like you are now in spoil alert territory which is a big killjoy. These are the reasons I scored it low ultimately. Let's pretend I played and understood the board game many of these issues wouldn't be issues. The gameplay is actually extremely decent. There are two campaigns one for marines and one for aliens, and the game is a measly $10. The game also has a map editor so if you have friends who enjoy this game or would skirmish this game is probably must have. In all I'm torn. The gameplay is excellent and the value is there. For me I found I had to put in some work to enjoy this game so to me that requires a cautionary score. For others this game could be the bomb as is. I think it all depends if you already know the game or don't. For me the game is worth the effort despite its imperfections Full Review »
