Something old, something new. Although small frustrations abound – time challenges beget repetition and fast traversal is curtailed with precision jumping – movement is exhilarating within a gorgeous looking game. Remnants are familiar but enjoyable to scale and topple. The mysteries of the Ultravoid are there to be explained if you wish to find it, albeit you’ll need to know where you’re going. Seeing civilisations mashed together, the story shows how determination can overcome anything. And Solar Ash is worth the trip to see how it ends.

Solar Ash has some of the best controls in the adventure platformer genre. Putting you in complete control of a badass, freerunning woman, you’ll skate the beautifully neon and fractured world the game drops you in. Sure, the story is underwhelming and the combat simplistic, but the excellent atmosphere and mechanics are worth taking the running jump.

Solar Ash is an incredible reminder of how video games are an art form above all else. Every note of music, every triumphant boss, every areaSolar Ash is an incredible reminder of how video games are an art form above all else. Every note of music, every triumphant boss, every area is so incredibly designed to just be fun. The movement is some of the best in all of games, it feels so unique and fluid and it's used wonderfully in the boss fights especially. The areas are interconnected and feel real. The story is really enjoyable and had my interest to the very end. If there is one word I would use to describe Solar Ash it would just be fun. I'm sick and tired of games straying from fun, feeling more like cash grabs than works of art that people were proud and happy to create. That really hit hard this year with Far Cry 6 and COD: Vanguard being underwhelming to say the least. Solar Ash reignited that spark that has always been in the gaming medium, the one that only games like Mario 64, Majora's Mask, Katana Zero, Furi, Disco Elysium, and even Heart Machine's previous game, Hyper Light Drifter can invoke. Solar Ash is a true achievement and without a doubt the greatest game released this year, in my opinion of course. It's quite short but I can tell I'm going to put a lot of time into this game, via all achievements, replays, and even some speedrunning. Everyone should play Solar Ash, I cannot recommend it enough. My one issue is that the ost hasn't been released on Spotify or Youtube or anything yet and I need it soon it's so good. Expand
