Slay the spire is a refreshing turn based card game where you play as one of three different starting characters and "fight" your way through multiple areas. Each area consists of multiple paths you can follow that have individual events attached such as: enemy encounters, resting places, random encounters etc.

In the course of your play you gain more cards that assist in your fighting, but you have to be careful not to get and accept every card or your deck will be less powerful and full of trash. The more you play the more you will learn about strats you can use with your cards and try out new ones. Special elite fights grant relics that are random and give you specific benefits such as healing, armor or more card power at the beginning of your turn. Cards can also be upgraded to enhance the individual strengths even more. Each battle swaps between you and the enemy choosing cards as long as you have enough points to use them. Some cards can be chained for powerful combos, some are one time usage and will be discarded until the next fight.

At the end of each area you encounter and fight a boss. If you succeed you can choose a reward, will be healed and proceed onto the next stage. Between bosses you can only heal by resting on rare occasions or by using scarce potions which make decisions more and more difficult. Will you deal dmg and receive dmg? Or will you play defensive, draw out the battle and get possibly struck by a buffed enemy later on. The monsters have individual attack sets. Some are good in def, some do huge attacks but are fragile, some of them have minions that can be re-summoned, some swap between agressive and defensive rounds etc.

There are different game modes, such as daily challenges or endless stages.

After all Slay the Spire was already highly successful on PC and I m glad that I m finally able to play it now on my PS4 Pro. The game is not too fancy but the gameplay is very solid and highly addicting. The artstyle is cartoon-ish and well made. Testing each character, unlocking new cards and fiddling around with card sets is really entertaining.

The price tag of 25 is kind of okay. I would suggest to buy it at around 15-20 because the game itself is fun but limited and gets repetitive at a certain point. It is still one of the best turn based strategic card games that I ve played in a long time. This is why it (in my opinion) deservers a rating around 8 to 9.

Haven't had game a video game draw me in that bad since Days Gone. Even if you do not like card games like Hearthstone or rougelikes, this game could still be for you, like it is for me, since I'm not a fan of both.

Cons: There are some fps drops on animations, no way to sync progress with iOS version.

You're given a starter deck of cards and asked to advance through a map littered with battles playing your cards in order to attack, block and various status effects which can aid you and hinder your CPU adversaries. The challenge makes the game as you will likely get beat down a few times before figuring out the mechanics. There is of course some luck of the draw which can help or spoil a run as well. There are four unique characters each with their own look and attributes which alter gameplay.

After playing all four characters and chasing some trophies the game starts to run out of steam. Would like to see more characters added.

But to sum it up, too much RNG, too steep a learning curve, too complicated, you “try so hard but in the end, it doesn’t even matter”. Not for the general public, not even for gamers (I could spend up to 50+ hours a week), but for a select few.

P.S: I do appreciate the time and effort making this game and the graphics, but please, remember your clientele.

That aside, let's go over the basics: the art is pretty amateurish, the sound design is almost nonexistent, and the controls are serviceable - all you really have to do is pick things and confirm, so that's simple enough.

Some more downsides to the game are:
the lack of any saved progression - there's no feeling like anything is improving as you play, so if you're into "Leveling up" this isn't the game for you. The only way to "get better" at this game is to get lucky early into a run, or restart your runs until you get the perfect relics early on.

Since you're so limited in your in-battle actions you really need to lean on good relic and card drops to get anywhere. Your run can completely fold up if a boss decides to drop the wrong three rare cards and you don't get what you needed, but you won't realize it until it's too late and you come up against a brick wall that requires a specific strategy you weren't able to build for.

If you're looking for a gambling game, this isn't a bad choice: IF it's on sale. Don't pay full price for this, it's an absurd ask for what you get.

I expect a card game to be random. By that I mean that cards should be drawn randomly. Not in this game, you either get cards drawn preselected by the developers or their random card drawer is extremely bad implemented. I had a deck of 50 cards and one of the cards I had five times in the deck. Next draw I get 4 of those 5 cards onto my hand! Do you know how low the odds are for that to happen?! And this did not happen only once, it happens all the time. After this the game became unplayable for me.

The problem is that the endgame -- once you have cleared the base quest with all three characters -- is preposterously difficult, even for a Roguelike. In a genre classic such as Hades, the player is rewarded for experimenting with different builds based on drops. In StS, if you don't luck out and get the exact right combination of cards, at exactly the right point in the game, you're totally effed. Enemies are idiotically overpowered, and minor mistakes can be catastrophic. This turns what was an absolutely thrilling and addictive experience into a lame, frustrating grind. Why bother to keep playing if it all comes down to dumb luck? An enormous disappointment.

UPDATE: Dropped the score from a 6 to a 4 due to the absurd end-game difficulty. Your capacity to slay the heart has virtually nothing to do with skill, and is entirely based on luck. It is *possible*, but will require you to get every requisite card, in a particular order, while landing only on enemies that it is possible to defeat. The developers ruined an otherwise excellent deck-building experience with ridiculously imbalanced difficulty. A challenge is welcome, but rolling the dice -- which is all that the latter stages of Slay is -- gets very boring very fast.

-You can easily tell if your run is going to fail right away in the first few minutes

    Pros
    - Good ideas and no bugs
    -the random events are cool
    - fun game to play for a few minutes

Overall, I think it depends somewhat if you like these type of card games/roguelikes. It's not a bad game at all, it's just for me it does get boring after awhile and really after a few hours you do feel like this is all the game really has to offer.

Still would recommend the purchase or play it with ps plus or xbox gamepass.

Next issue is that some end of level bosses are unbeatable! The time guardian boss will trash you every time with his ability to end your turn when you've not even played a card! This happened 4 times in a row which didn't even allow me to play a defense card so I was dead in no time. This boss is simply too overpowered so you'll never get a decent fight. Slay the Spire takes the best parts of roguelites, dungeon crawlers, and card games, and mixes them together into an unholy, but absurdly enjoyable game. It’s the kind of game that gets under your skin and uses it like a tent, just camping out and reminding you that you aren’t playing it. It’s the kind of game that you can jump in for one quick run and suddenly realise that you've been playing for five hours and should really be asleep. It’s the kind of game that is easy to play, hard to master, and impossible to put down. What more could you want?
