    No matter what your favorite character platformer series is -- be it Sly Cooper or Ratchet and Clank -- Skylar and Plux is likely a game that won't measure up to it. It is a game that can be forgiven for all of its flaws though, because so much genuine love went into the game that it is nearly impossible to actively dislike it. There is nothing cynical whatsoever about this game. Instead, it oozes with an almost childlike enthusiasm, which is something uncommon in today's environment of dark, gritty games and hopelessly bloated development budgets. It is that enthusiasm, along with the constantly changing music and scenery, that wholeheartedly carries the game and gives you the ability to overlook its shortcomings. The game may be guilty of relying on that sense too much, forcing you to look the other way at everything that it is missing or does wrong. Gamers who require more robust gameplay mechanics or more collectibles may find themselves underwhelmed by Skylar and Plux. They should still be able to appreciate the effort though, if not the result.

    Skylar & Plux does an exceptional job at giving us a beautiful 3D platformer with truly fun platforming sections, delightful puzzling elements and one-liners that had me laughing. The problem with the game is that it needs a bit more polish.

    Lacking some polish in the audio and with a highly derivative story, it's hard for Skylar and Plux to stand out from the crowd. Its visuals are nice, however, and gameplay is solid and enjoyable enough. Children will love the vivid colors and silly characters, but not enough is done to appeal to the mainstream gaming crowd.

    Skylar & Plux is a charming and fun little game but it's so ridiculously short and easy that I can't imagine any 3D platformer fan could fully embrace it. Then again, what other game stars both a lynx and an owl?

    Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is a sound gameplay experience, but lets itself down in a number of other areas. The humour and dialogue fall incredibly flat and there's really no rapport developed between Skylar and Plux during the game. The game's also very short, and while this isn't a terrible effort by any stretch, it begs the question why you wouldn't just play Ratchet & Clank instead.

    For the amount of staff that worked on this game, they do have a good base to work from, but unfortunately there are so many issues that it detracts from being an enjoyable affair. Its sub three-hour gameplay has no replayability at all, and the consistently harsh frame rate dips heavily impact the game.

The controls are easy enough to learn but there are options for players that are looking for a harder challenge. Try "roll-jumping" everywhere! Once you master the tricky precision you will be able to get around very quickly.

    I feel like they really nailed the difficulty curve with the levels. In the beginning you can pretty much run and smash while you learn the controls but later they hit you with some tricky platforming that requires you to combine several of your powers. Combat is fairly straight forward but keeps you engaged nicely between platforming areas.

    The puzzles are great, though maybe a tad simple. I really enjoyed the time-shift puzzles, some of them really blew my mind. I wish they would've made more of them.

    The game looks stunning. Even on my potato on medium it looked awesome and ran flawlessly. Really enjoyed the aesthetics.

    Solid sound effects and great music. The music especially is very well produced. Maaybe missing a super-catchy pop song in there.

    Nice casual story that doesn't take itself too seriously, which I really enjoyed. I found the voice acting to be completely satisfactory.

    After the bad press that followed in the wake of Yooka-Laylee, another 3D platformer is something no one particularly queued up for, however,After the bad press that followed in the wake of Yooka-Laylee, another 3D platformer is something no one particularly queued up for, however, peeking shyly from a shelf in a digital store, we spied one featuring an enhanced lynx and her talking bird friend, so we thought, why not? after all, we are cat lovers here at TGS.

    Skylar & Plux Adventure on Clover Island developed by Right Nice Games in conjunction with Grip Digital (MOTHERGUNSHIP) is a low cost 3D platformer released back in May 2017 on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One.

    Featuring various terrains, from tropical beaches and snowy mountain tops to deserts, all serve as fun environments to clamber over, delve into and navigate around.

    Protagonist Skylar Lynxe is equipped with various abilities, unlocked through progression. From jetpack, to assist in reaching various areas, a magnetic glove for moving huge metallic items and even a time orb to change entire landscapes and slow moving objects and enemies.

    Skylar is accompanied by Plux Owlsley, an owl-like creature. Plux serves very little purpose other than dialogue. He does nothing, you cannot use the character and he grants you no additional skill sets. The reason for Plux is to add to the story and provide dialogue because Skylar does not actually speak. We needn’t have had Plux in the game at all to be fair, simply adding voice lines to Skylar would have sufficed.

    The game predominantly is set in three locations. Within each stage you must collect an orb. Three orbs will unlock the end boss battle, defeating him is the end of the game, however, the collection of these three orbs takes very little time. We’d guess it can be done in around two and a half hours, without rushing. There is a collection side-quest, whereby you must free caged animals. Each of the stages and hub world has a set amount of these caged creatures to free and it is just a matter of hunting for them. This will add a couple of additional hours to the game, but it feels more like a tacked on task.

    You’ll collect gems very frequently in the game. The gems you collect are used to top up health and to unlock the aforementioned caged animals. There is no shortage of these gems, which we feel is a missed opportunity. It’s too easy to top your health up and unlocking the cages is simply a matter of locating them. They should have cut the gems down by about two thirds, ensuring you also have to hunt them to make any meaningful progression. This would also ensure you enter areas filled with enemies with a bit more caution.

    Speaking of enemies, the game is somewhat lacking in this area. There are three enemies throughout the game. There are little minion tv sets who do nothing more than charge you. They appear in a swarm most often and can be dealt with fairly easily. There is the turret machine gun variety too.. these can be a tad trickier to take down, although a quick blast of the time module will ensure they slow to less than a crawl, enabling you to simply punch them.
    The third enemy is a guided missile. You can dispatch of these in a similar fashion, through slowing time and avoiding the projectiles, or you can just run at normal speed, avoiding the missiles. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could use your magnetic ability to fire their weapons back at them.
    These are the only enemies and all can be defeated with a single punch. It would have been good if there were a couple more types, and each enemy had varying degrees of strength.

    With only one boss in the game, who is defeated easily, we feel another missed opportunity in Skylar and Plux is to have sub bosses. There are no sub bosses, meaning that after the collection of the third orb, I slapped my controller down on the table and readied myself not for battle, but instead for credits.

    The voicing of characters, namely Plux, Bob and CRT is actually very enjoyable, unfortunately the other character, Lo’a Elder, is among the worst voicing we’ve heard. Voiced by Magdalena J Hammar, she misses cues, she emphasises the wrong parts of her script and in general very much does not fit her aging character model. Her voice is too young and she seems too detached from the entire thing.

    Having stated the above negatives, we do have to applaud the game, because it is still incredibly enjoyable. The platforming mechanics are perfect in every way. It’s a thoroughly fun couple of hours with a couple of gem lines scattered among an otherwise run of the mill story. Would I recommend the game? Hell yes. If you grew up with mascot 3D platformers, you owe it to yourself to give this one a try. Sure, the budget and scale isn’t quite as extensive as the likes of Yooka-Laylee, neither is the polish, but we think it has charm by the bucket-load.

    Although scrappy in places and a couple of hours shorter than we’d have liked, the overall package here is great. We will be keeping our eyes open for this plucky duo’s return.    … Expand

The writing is not so good, the voice acting is meh, the graphics are meh, and the music is a little bad. Plus the game is way too short. It feels more like extra story DLC for another game. I'm pretty much glad I bought it when it was 2 or 3 bucks, because it's not worth $14.99. At most $9.99. I do want them to do better with a sequel or something, cause this game didn't seem to have the biggest budget. I do think they should have one more chance at doing better, cause as I said, there was potential for this game to be better than it was.… Expand

    As you would expect from a 3d platformer you can jump and double…
    but here youll be spinning and smashing boxes crash bandicoot style to take out enemies and collect these orange gems that act as your health as well as currency to unlock these creatures in cages youll find on your journey that you can are rewarded for finding with more health…
    as you progress the game youll unlock 3 gadgets.. one a jet pack to help ypu glide, one an hour glass that slows time.. useful for enemy encounters and moving parts… and finally a magnet hand useful for pretty much nothing…
    I was actually having a lot of fun when the game started exploring its hub island and even the first island..
    pure platforming, the level was bright and beautiful..
    I was intrigued by the design to explore
    but as the game went on the worse it got..
    the 2nd elvel being a bunch of boring puzzles and the 3rd just being a generic bore fest of putting a ball in a whole while you listen to your bird friend deliver the cringiest dialog ever in a game..
    I can tell not much went into the voice acting here as the main character doesn’t speak at all..
    and this games villain sounds like a random guy youd meet at comicon trying to do a handsome jack impression…
    its bad..
    They did go for the E rating here and this is accomplished by having your bird friend say funk in place of the f word and things like your butt is grass…
    and I could feel myself die a little more each time I heard these 9 year old versions of naughty sayings
    instead of just.. you know.. writing with a little effort..
    Skylar and Plux is a mediocre time throughout…
    it isn’t fun beyond the first 3rd , it runs horribly and starts to lag when things are moving too fast across the screen
    You wont necessarily hate your time with this game…
    and youll at least get some laughs out of the cringefest…
    but beyond this.. theres nothing here worth seeing
