  • Summary: The 1st new game in twelve years from Alfa System, the team that brought you the shoot ’em up Castle of Shikigami III in the Castle of Shikigami series. Five uniquely talented sisters are squabbling over which of them will marry the angel Yashin. Enjoy the heroic(?) strategies of all five.

Side effects of playing Sisters Royale include not being able to close your eyes without seeing clouds of neon projectiles flying everywhere but when you're a shmup fan, that's a good thing. In the end, I'm glad to see Alfa System back doing what they do best.

Sisters Royale is a fine shoot 'em up that gets a lot right and is just a few decisions away from being great. It is easy to recommend for fans of the genre though, especially at this low price.

Sisters Royale: Five Sisters Under Fire doesn’t reinvent the shmup rulebook, but it leverages some interesting wrinkles first introduced by the Castle of Shikigami series to excellent effect. The presentation – aside from its epilepsy-inducing patterns – leaves a lot to be desired, but the unique gameplay attributes of its protagonists makes for a surprisingly replayable arcade affair.

Sisters Royale: Five Sisters Under Fire is a solid shmup, albeit one that plays things a little too safe. The power shot mechanic has merit, but the inclusion of summons makes the overall package far too easy.

Sisters Royale should be a hard pass to anyone looking for a good Cute-Em-Up game.

I rated 9 because 8.5 is not possible, really I would rate the game 8.5. In any case, this is one of the biggest disparities I've seenI rated 9 because 8.5 is not possible, really I would rate the game 8.5. In any case, this is one of the biggest disparities I've seen recently between a game that I really enjoyed and one that has gotten a few negative reviews in the press. This is absolutely puzzling to me unless the reviewers either don't play a lot of STGs or they are offended by the campy anime storyline about 5 sisters competing for the love of a single suitor. Well, there is more to the story if you finish the game and I personally find flavor narratives in this genre to be a nice addition rather than something with very much importance to how good the game is.

Simply put, this is one of the better modern STGs released in recent years. The controls feel perfect and the scoring system, which is similar to the Castle of Shikigami series and encourages being close to bullets when killing enemies and collecting the coins they drop, adds a serious amount of depth to the gameplay. There are online leaderboards for each character and all 5 + 1 DLC characters are very different from one another to play.

If you are into STGs, don't miss this one.

EDIT: The soundtrack is also phenomenal
