    So eine tolle Atmosphäre habe ich schon lange nicht mehr in einem Game erlebt. Natürlich ist die Grafik nicht high end, aber sie ist eben vollkommen ausreichend und vor allem stimmig. Wer hier mehr erwartet hat, bei dem Budget, der hat schlicht zu viel erwartet. Storytechnisch, ist es gewohnt schön erzählt von Yu Suzuki.     So there comes a time in everyones lives where we first fired up our dreamcast consoles and inserted shenmue....18 years later in 2019 with a low budget offer from kickstater, it appears to be not the AAA game that people were claiming or hoping for, as i played 6 hours into shenmue 3 on the PlayStation 4 Pro it has once again brought me where VIDEOGAMES were extremely fun and brought backSo there comes a time in everyones lives where we first fired up our dreamcast consoles and inserted shenmue....18 years later in 2019 with a low budget offer from kickstater, it appears to be not the AAA game that people were claiming or hoping for, as i played 6 hours into shenmue 3 on the PlayStation 4 Pro it has once again brought me where VIDEOGAMES were extremely fun and brought back nostalgia into my life!

    Indescribable the feeling of being able to play a shenmue again. Gorgeous graphics, good performance on PS4pro and history that doesn't make you want to stop playing. I already have 8 hours of gampeplay and RECOMMENDED ALL.

    If you a shenmue fan then you will love it and for new players you need to understand the story then play it. It's not in action game that you shot everything or destroy thing's around you it's a game that you need to ask search and train to get to the next location.

    It was worth the wait! After 18 years we finally have a game that is completely different from everything we have in the industry. Shenmue 3 does not have the best graphics, however the game has the soul from the golden era, where games had a message to pass.

    Blown away so far. Honestly didn't expect much, but i've been hugely surprised. Even the hysterically ludicrous dialog is still there. Is some of the funny cringe-worthy lines done on purpose? Who knows, and who cares! I'm just glad they're all there.
    I'll be playing through this a few times over xmas for sure. Cheers Yu Suzuke!

    Utter Shenmue goodness in one game.
    It helps to play the first 2 games before tackling this (which is lucky as they are also available on PS4, XB1 and PC)
    18 years in the making and it hasn’t disappointed, It looks like Shenmue , it feels like Shenmue and it tastes like Shenmue. Such an important game showing what fan power and a community can do when that all pull together. Buy it. If    Utter Shenmue goodness in one game.

    It's incredible that Yu Suzuki's team—which is smaller than the team that worked on the first game—managed to make Shenmue 3 feel exactly like the first two entries. Playing this game made me feel like I was 10 years old again.

    Whilst the gaming mechanics are reminiscent of the days of the Dreamcast, it does not disappoint. Shenmue 3 is such a dense game, full of many things to keep you occupied and entertained with far more intricacies than you would expect from a kickstarter title with such ambition.

    The best independent game I've been able to play in the whole decade. Original and unique, only Shenmue is Shenmue. Refrain fans of explosions through corridors and other mainstream games of the moment.

    Hmmm when shenmue 1 came out it was something new and unique and something never done before .. while 2 other developers had progressed the open world genre ... it was clinging on by a thread ... part 3 on the other hand does nothing to offer current gamers , it offers no new experiences ,it is nothing ground breaking .. this is a game that should have been made in 2001-2005 .. the gameHmmm when shenmue 1 came out it was something new and unique and something never done before .. while 2 other developers had progressed the open world genre ... it was clinging on by a thread ... part 3 on the other hand does nothing to offer current gamers , it offers no new experiences ,it is nothing ground breaking .. this is a game that should have been made in 2001-2005 .. the game play mechanics are severely put dated though it does have its moments it shines .. some interactions were memorable .. while many others fall flat .. the progress you made as Ryo in part one and two I feel we’re all lost .. in part 3 Ryo feels dumber , and as if he has not fought in the actual 18-20 years the game has been in development hell ... you look find Ryo struggle with enemies who he would’ve beaten down in part 1-2 which I find it very odd ... that he does not remember any of his training... the story has many inconsistencies, and to many gaps that leave you wondering what just happened .... the ending falls completely flat , and was a very horrible horrible boss battle , if you can even call it a bosss battle ... shenmue 3 is not all bad . And again it has its good moments . But the game is truly lacking , npc popping up on screen in thin air and just magically appearing . It’s very easy to max out your character , combat is very sluggish and you don’t feel like you are actually hurting your opponent ... no throw moves .. npc dialect is very limited ... some of the characters models are horrible .. the American voice acting is even worse than part 1 and 2 ... just play the game in Japanese you will thank me later ... I would only recommend this game for shenmue fans ... the ending is straight up dog crap ... and leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth ... don’t go on here expecting anything spectacular ... I suppose we will have to wait for another 18 years for shenmue 4 and another 18 following that for shenmue 5 .. yu Suzuki should have just closed this chapter and ended the saga once and for all .. or even just add the remaining chapters as a story add on for part 3 put part 4 & 5 as dlc and call it a day… Expand

    It’s Shenmue, you either love it or hate it.
    I understand that it may look boring and weird for younger audiences, but they have to understand is the continuation of a magnificent saga that changed the way we knew video games.
    Definitely worth playing if you loved the first two titles, you get to feel that unique and wonderful “shenmue feel”.

Gameplay:    First of all, my review could be a little too positive as I'm a big fan of the series.

    Gameplay: Walking around reminds the old, but lacks a fresh experience. It doesn't feel great like Shenmue 2 neither a typical nowadays experience.
    This is my big disappointment: the fighting system! It feels playing a game with input lag, the frame rate goes under 15 fps on a PS4 Pro. It is hard to believe that this was conceived by the same guy who created Virtua Fighter almost 30 years ago...

    Sound and musics: I've enjoyed, there's a solid piece of work there.

    Overall: This project generated hype, costed millions, and it is really underwhelming.    … Expand

    i was so worried about this game as a big fan of 1 and 2, when it was announced at e3 i thought wow with sony backing him! then realized it was a kickstarter, the first 2 where technically stunning, at the time i had never seen games like them i was blown away they were so groundbreaking, and i thought well as a kickstarter 3 cant be that, as tbh the only company that could probably affordi was so worried about this game as a big fan of 1 and 2, when it was announced at e3 i thought wow with sony backing him! then realized it was a kickstarter, the first 2 where technically stunning, at the time i had never seen games like them i was blown away they were so groundbreaking, and i thought well as a kickstarter 3 cant be that, as tbh the only company that could probably afford to do a technically groudbreaking game at this time on this current gen is probably rockstar, so i thought hope he sticks to classic shenmue as i thought it could so easily b a tacky/ buggy/ crappy 3d poor performance game, i just wanted more story / more shenmue! and omg Yu delivered, i love this game so much, it really does play and feel like shenmue, but the 'game world / area ' looks really nice, its such a breath of fresh air/ change of pace to wander around the beautiful village/ world, so peaceful, the dialogue is what you would expect from shenmue, there are so many nice touches in the village, so much to do i find myself wasting days not progressing just getting caught up in 'stuff', the music is outstanding, and i found myself very quickly caring about the well being of the village, and they just went and made Shenhua the most adorable/ lovable person ever shes so sweet and caring! Everything i wanted it to be, and thankfully none of the stuff that had me worried, in fact i'am blown away by shenmue again that Yu managed to create a game like this as a kickstarter! there are a few minor technical issues but nothing that has affected my enjoyment, this game will get a lot of hate but its meant for the fans! let the others carry on playing the same old stuff they have been for years now and their ubisoft effect games with their graphically amazing open worlds that are very boring and completely empty! the one question I'm left with is 'where do i sign up for 4's kickstarter?… Expand

For those of you jumping into Shenmue for the first time, welcome, but be aware this game was intended for those of us who have waited 18+ years. We have a strong bond between this game and are finally able to have our connection grow here today. Let me start off with how great it looks. Now compared to modern day game obviously Shenmue can’t compare. But for those of us who have waited in the Shenmue “Purgatory” this is exactly how we would’ve wanted our game to look and age. Everything feels smoother from combat to graphics and frame rates (PS4 Pro). It’s awesome to hear the familiar voice of Ryo Hazuki and Friends again, as well as meeting new friends and enmities along the way. So once again Shenmue friends! It’s here! Let’s celebrate!     Shenmue 3 is a unique game.
    It is not perfect of course, but as his two predecessors, it is a true invitation to a journey in china.
    It has a really unique atmosphere , with gorgeous music and environnement.
    I can't recomand enough the game to the fan, and to the curious :)

    Review: Shenmue 3 is what Shenmue fans want - mostly. The game feels like the sequel we were robbed of back in the Dreamcast era. The charmingly awkward dialogue is back, and this time I feel like it's a choice rather than a product of it's era, simply to please the fans who've come to love it so much.
    In    Full disclosure: I'm a longtime Shenmue fan and someone who backed Shenmue 3.
    Review: Shenmue 3 is what Shenmue fans want - mostly. The game feels like the sequel we were robbed of back in the Dreamcast era. The charmingly awkward dialogue is back, and this time I feel like it's a choice rather than a product of it's era, simply to please the fans who've come to love it so much.

    In terms of pacing, Shenmue 3 picks up a lot faster than the previous two games in the series. You're immediately thrown into a "small open world" area and introduced to a variety of mini games and combat. In earlier entries, Shenmue took it's time to build to your first encounter, or let you discover the mini games after the initial "prologue" of the game, but not here. In fact, Shenmue 3 doesn't have a prologue, as it picks up immediately where Shenmue 2 left of, as if the last 18 years never happend.
    As a Shenmue fan, i like this.

    However, the reason I'm giving this an 8 (which is still very high by my standards) and not a 10 is because of 2 things. One of them bugs me as a Shenmue fan, the other just bugs me in general.

    1) The combat: Shenmue 1 & 2 had some great combat. It came down to throws, punches, kicks and dodges. Timing moves right and landing a hard-to-pull-of throw resulted in beautiful animations that made you feel like a martial arts master. The combat felt real, heavy but not sluggish, and rewarding. Shenmue 3, however, ditches the throws entirely and opts for a faster-paced, combo centric fighting system that is a lot more "button mashy." It's... okay. It can be fun. But it doesn't feel as rewarding, and the lack of throw moves altogether (maybe due to budget limitations in the animation department) definitely hurts my experience as a longtime fan.

    2) The main menu: There is no excuse for this game to have a Jpeg for a menu screen. It's a huge diservice to the game. It's the first thing people are going to see, and it's going to make them think they've bought into a cheap experience. Now, i know Shenmue 3 was made on a budget - i helped add to that budget - but an animated, asethetically pleasing menu wouldn't break the bank now, would it?

    Simply put, if you’re a fan of the original games you will absolutely love the third instalment. It feels, plays and sounds like Shenmue, albeit with updated graphics. Graphics wise it doesn’t match AAA games nowadays but when you look at the fact it was a Kickstarted game with a very limited budget, it’s a miracle this game actually exists in its current form (it’s actually a miracle itSimply put, if you’re a fan of the original games you will absolutely love the third instalment.     I really enjoy playing this game. Love the story, characters, picturesque locations and battle system. It's true that technically and graphically it's far from current AAA games but that's not what's most important for me. Shenmue 3 is full of charm and magic I loved about previous games.

    I was barely a teenager when the first Shenmue was released. I had been following the development for several years, captivated by the glimpses, teases and various previews that had been released over the course of several years. When the game was finally released, I was blown away by the characters and world Yu Suzuki had crafted. The game was everything I had hoped and dreamed it wouldI was barely a teenager when the first Shenmue was released. When the game was finally released, I was blown away by the characters and world Yu Suzuki had crafted. The game was everything I had hoped and dreamed it would be and once I had seen the closing credits, I knew I needed more.

    As we all know, Shenmue I was just the first part of a much larger story, but fortunately for fans, aside from XBox exclusivity in North America causing an unnecessary delay for those in that region, they didn't have to wait to long for the second game in the series. Shenmue II was released shortly after the first game and not only had a huge number of improvements, it also had a much larger world. Unfortunately, it ended on a huge cliffhanger and fans have been waiting 18 years to find out what happens after lead protagonist, Ryo Hazuki and literally the girl of his dreams, Shenhua leave that damn cave.

    So does Shenmue III live up to the hype? The short answer is yes, but as you'd expect, there are some caveats.

    The game begins right where Shenmue II left off, with Ryo and Shenhua in the cave together, witnessing the mysteriou appearance of the dragon and phoenix mirrors upon the wall of the cave. After a few interactions with Shenhua, we're able to explore the world of Shenmue III and finally play the new installment in the series. Gameplay-wise, Shenmue fans will be right at home. Shenmue III plays in a very similar fashion to its predecessors and despite some modernisations (for example, dual analogue movement controls), the game is very much a successor to the first two games in every way imaginable. This means movement, animations, character models and dialogue are all a little dated, but in terms of Shenmue III's core gameplay, it honestly plays as a beautiful continuation of the groundwork the previous two titles laid.

    Environments are now bigger and mostly seamless, instead of the compartmentalised worlds the previous two games had. In addition, although character models aren't the best you will see on the PS4 by a long shot, the worlds you can explore are beautiful. As you'd expect from the Shenmue series, these are full of fun activities to engage in, characters to interact with and side quests to complete.

    The story writing and plot is as great as ever. Old characters return to the fold and the pacing has that classic Shenmue style. Dialogue is as quirky and - at times corny - as you'd expect, but fans of the series will not be disappointed.

    In terms of the game's flaws, I'm not completely sold on the benefits of the new stamina system, which I find to be a mild hindrance when it comes to encouraging players to explore and enjoy traversing through the various areas within the game. The combat also has a more RPG-style leveling system this time, with the core-combat itself, being altered from the Virtua Fighter mechanics to something a bit more straightforward. It's certainly enjoyable, but perhaps not as deep as the original fighting gameplay. I personally like the RPG training system this time, but can understand others might not.

    Overall, Shenmue III lives up to 18 years of hype and is a resounding success. I just hope the wait for Shenmue IV isn't quite so long.    … Expand

    I never thought I'd see this degree of beauty on an indie game. Shenmue III Looks so gorgeous.. ignore those haters saying that this looks like a PS2 game, obviously they don't know what they are talking about.

    A different game that needs patience when playing it. Not for everyone.

There is much less hand holding, like older games it allows you to experience the world on your own without a waypoint constantly telling you what to do.     Today, I can play the first two games on my PS4 Pro - and the third part as well. Technically of course, the gameplay mechanics, they are dated but the graphics are still very appealing and most important: the game is still as fun for me, as in the old days. I like the daily routines, the fights, the mini games and how the world feels realistic. I really enjoy the slow pace, it is an experience for me, after 2-3 days of play I can say, it is a real classic for me. I was a little sceptical, as I don’t enjoy the Yakuza games (too repetitive, too many fights, fights are only button smashers...) but Shenmue is totally different. Both games share the mechanics, but it is the slow pace and the sheer amount of detail that makes Shenmue 3 a much better experience for me.

    If you are new to the series, give it a try, try to play at least the first Shenmue on PS4, to fully enjoy an important part of video game history. I would rate the Shenmue games as high as the Mario games or the GTA series: milestones.    … Expand

    After 18 years this feels like the game fans have been waiting for. The graphical improvements from the Dreamcast era are a welcome addition, and other than a different of fighting mechanic (which isn’t a bad thing in my opinion) this feels like a true continuation of a classic series.

The only reason it gets a 9 instead of a 10 from me is the strict bedtime of Niaowu, maintaining the 9pm sleepy time that seemed to make sense for the story in Bailu village for the purpose of having time to speak with shenhua and not be wandering.

    However in the city this feels like    Shenmue 3 is a true continuation, maintaining its roots while becoming better at what it always has been. The only reason it gets a 9 instead of a 10 from me is the strict bedtime of Niaowu, maintaining the 9pm sleepy time that seemed to make sense for the story in Bailu village for the purpose of having time to speak with shenhua and not be wandering.

    However in the city this feels like I had the exciting night life taken from me. Chances to explore the beautiful landscape at night limited by an unexplained bedtime.

    Aside from this, a lack of moves learned from masters was disappointing. The only two times it happened were story parts few and far between and the moves held no significance outside of specific plot scenes.

    These two things were mild but constant thus taking a point off for me. Everything else was perfect to me. I hope it was and/or will be to you as well!    … Expand

    Truly a game remarkable on its own. The sequel was well worth the wait. Contrary to popular belief, the games failure In 2001 was brought about by factors and not by th actual game in itself. From the maker of revolutionary game maker Yu Suzuki. Just as he never faltered or gave up, so did the countless fan base. And now here we are. After 18 years... We have a sequel... The English dub seems to lack a lot of emotion, and some of the lines are very jarring, and don’t seem to follow what was previously said. I really wish that this was an area that was improved. Having said that, I really enjoyed the conversations between Ryo and Shenhua.

    2. Stupidity for the sake of the game: There are certain elements of the game that come across as stupid. Not stupid in a good way, but in a dumb way. For example, during the first area I was in a village of less than 100 people. I needed to find a martial artist, I was told on numerous occasions that ‘I’m sorry, I don’t know anything about that.’ Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that the game can’t hand you everything straight away, but you’re telling me that I’m a village of less than 100 people they don’t know each and every person? That’s just not happening. There are other instances of this kind of thing, but I don’t want to get into spoiler territory.

    Like I said before, I love this game and I’m prepared to forgive them for these discrepancies, which is why I personally have it as a 10/10 game, but objectively I think 8/10 is a lot fairer.    … Expand

    Amazing follow up to an amazing story. Shenmue is not just a game, it's also a work of art. You need to take your time with it and just enjoy the atmospheric feel it gives you. For anyone who enjoys modern, fast pace action games I can see them struggling to get into Shenmue. Anyway a beautiful game and I can't wait to see what happens next.

This third chapter feels a lot more intimate, mainly thanks to the relationship with Shenhua and the other characters.

    The attention to details is once again astonishing. As a martial arts practiotioner myself, I was really surprised to see how different NPCs performed existing forms with great accuracy. I think it's fair to say that this game is absolutely the best about a correct depiction of real life kungfu. Talking about combat, the new combat system is an evolution of the previous ones. There are no more grappling moves and throws, but it's possible to assign special moves to a single button now.

    The graphics are not the top, but with the actual budget of this game, the results are really good in my opinion, About the music... well, absolutely amazing. The only issue overall is the translation. The Italian one at least is not that good, in my opinion.

    It's anyway a kind of game that I feel I can strongly suggest to those who didn't play the first two games as well. Shenmue III is a very human story, that will touch your heart with its poetry and atmosphere. I wish there were more games like this nowadays.    … Expand

    What a horrible experience this was. Whatever minuscule redeeming qualities this game might have are drowned out by just how infuriating it is. And I can’t think of anybody who is a fan of this franchise that can honestly call this game good with a straight face. Get this game if you’re a fan of the series, but don’t be surprised if it just ends up making you hate yourself for waiting nearly two decades for what is essentially the video game equivalent of Freddy Got Fingered.

And I can’t think of anybody who is a fan of this franchise that can honestly call this game good with a straight face. Get this game if you’re a fan of the series, but don’t be surprised if it just ends up making you hate yourself for waiting nearly two decades for what is essentially the video game equivalent of Freddy Got Fingered.

    Shenmue 3 is a tough recommendation for general audiences. It won't please the die-hard fans of the originals due the step backwards in terms of game design. Neophytes who are curious about it will be confused and bored by the sleep-inducing pace, plus the how the voice acting has not changed since the early '00s. The visuals may have improved, and the loading times are a thing of the past, but this is still has the soul of a Dreamcast title. It won't live up to the expectations that fans have, nor will it excite interest in the franchise. Nothing of substance gets solved by the conclusion, and there's a lack of a pay-off to playing such an intentionally slow experience. The highs in Shenmue 3 involve doing what amounts to nothing; that is just taking in the atmosphere and exploring.
