    It won't be appreciated by the self entitled, and its message will be lost on them. That's why the reviews are so devisive.     As a fan of the original 2 games I backed this on kickstarter, it was a heck of a wait, but for me it was worth while.
    As I'm an old school gamer who grew up on fogger, and space invader, then onto the nes and so on, I love old single players, with a good story, plenty to see and do, and so far I'm extremely grateful and pleased that shenmue 3 has everything I wanted, ok it's not a modern    As a fan of the original 2 games I backed this on kickstarter, it was a heck of a wait, but for me it was worth while.

    Great game! Shenmue 3 feels truly like the sequel we have waited for. Yes it had it's faults but this game feels very much Shenmue. The graphics and scenery are beautiful, great gameplay with new elements, a fun battle system, some beautiful new Shenmue music that was a joy to hear and the game had the Shenmue charm like the 1 and 2 did. The story was interesting and at times emotionalGreat game! Shenmue 3 feels truly like the sequel we have waited for. Yes it had it's faults but this game feels very much Shenmue. The graphics and scenery are beautiful, great gameplay with new elements, a fun battle system, some beautiful new Shenmue music that was a joy to hear and the game had the Shenmue charm like the 1 and 2 did. The story was interesting and at times emotional too! Funny moments and good new characters to add as well.

    The slow pacing won't be for everyone, this game was made for Shenmue fans and the story and some characters at times seemed light which is a shame as it would have been a better game otherwise. Battle system felt alittle clunky at times too. Eating food all the time got annoying,etc. Too much reused music in some scenes I must add.

    Overall this game really was just a continuation of the story that is only 40% done and what a good sequel it was to add to the series. A great game with awesome fight scenes that I very much enjoyed playing. I love games that feel like an adventure that make you just wanna play them till the end and Shenmue 3 did that. Seriously well done to Yu and his team for making it feel like Shenmue on a budget and after SO long after the originals. The game's moments reminded me of Shenmue 1 and 2 so that made it feel like 'Shenmue III'.

    8.5/10 and I can't wait to play it again with DLC, etc. Please make Shenmue IV Yu Suzuki despite the mixed reception.    … Expand

Despite the low budget, this game is beautiful in every way : story, dialogues, fighting system, music, graphics also are quite seducing. This game has to be lived like a life experience, seen like a painting and read as a poem.     I am so impressed by this game. It is truly a masterpiece especially since it came out of a Kickstarter. Can you believe the continuity between a game from 18 years ago. The graphics are impressive and the immersion into the environment and people is so Shenmue like. The story is great but won’t spoil anything.

    After all this years I cannot believe this game actually came out. It feels like shenmue, it plays like shenmue, it’s another masterpiece. I love it. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

    Has loads of what's missing in the industry right now. Authenticity.
    People should play this. Because past some technical imperfections due to budgetary issues, this game has more to offer than many AAA games with massive budget.

    I was mislead by strange character design first. But when I get to control Ryo, I felt exactly same perfect experience as first two parts of the Great Saga. Just try the game, it's special.

Truly the game we've all put our heart and souls into backing and hoping for. Everything from the music to the look of the world is exactly what you'd expect from a Shenmue released in 2019.     Regresa la continuación de uno de los mejores videojuegos de la historia. No estoy de acuerdo en que esté anticuado como dicen muchos, sigue siendo muy divertido en todos los apartados y muy disfrutable. Minijuegos, exploración, combates, quicktime, y una soberbia historia. Obra maestra.

    Shenmue 3 his music his history his fighting system and excellent graphics. Keeps his esscence intact.Some technical problems that can ve solved with an update such as the synchronization of some melodies and loading errors. Shenmue 3 an excellent game for those who are new in the saga, and Masterpiece for those who expected it for years.

The game is gorgeous, environments particularly but also the npc characters in particularly are filled with expression and character. There's a deluge of things to do: from fishing to log cutting, Lucky hit to pail tossing, sparing to fighting to become the top rank in the dojo, and plants to pickup for some quick cash. Shenmue 3 knows who it was made for, and it quickly gives the fans who were begging for more story for the past 18 years tons of new information to process. I won't go into specifics but the game does a great job of bringing back old stories and telling new ones. Gameplay feels great, you'll have to eat throughout the day to keep up your health because running non stop like you did in Shenmue 1 and 2 does a number on your health. once yous tart to find the combat booklets the combat starts to get a lot more comfortable and having a rpg system where training the moves makes them stronger is a really nice touch.

    Shenmue 3 has quickly become my GOTY and I even can say I prefer it to Shenmue 2. Shenmue 1 will always be by number one game though. Thanks for reading!    … Expand

    This is all I've been waiting for 20 years! Since I bought Shenmue 1 for my Dreamcast back in 2000 this has been my favorite game ever, I thought I would never have the same feeling again while playing a game. After all these years Shenmue 3 was able to do this again. Thanks Yu Suzuki

    Excellent game, Suzuki has done the series proud with this long awaited installment. The graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay is superb, the music is absolutely incredible and the storyline is as brilliant as the first two.

    Love it. Really nice continuation of everything we loved about the first 2 games. Graphics are faithful to the original style with nice modern updates. The same voice actors return. I'm a very happy customer.

    I don't understand the appeal of this game, it is completely horrible with a myriad of problems.

    First of all, the gameplay is so boring and repetitive. They just throw one gimmick after another at you and you grind away with frustrating controls and the combat system is so outdated that I'm ashamed to even call it a combat system.     The voice-acting is also horrible, everyone sounds like they are dying inside and soul-less. The dialogue didn't help either as many of the lines between characters make no sense, was this game even made for English audiences? It sounds like a really poor translation attempt. It's just so damn cringey!

    The story is so bland I had to ask myself if anything worthwhile was happening in this game.

    All in all, this was the most garbage game I've played in a long time with no redeeming qualities.    … Expand

There is no game out there in the open world genere as inmersive in the day to day rutine as this one.     This is exactly what I hoped Shenmue 3 would feel like! It's not as perfect video game, but its perfect to the long time fans. What Yu and his team did on budget of around 7 million is astounding! A lot of quality of life improvements have been made while still retaining the feel of Shenmue. I'm in love!

    (Recommend playing with Japanese voice over and English Subtitles) What do you get when you mix LA Noire,Yakuza, Persona, and Virtua Fighter? Shenmue 3. Initially is a story of revenge but as you play it becomes so much more. Charming story of friendships, action and adventure. It’s easy to get sucked into this world.

    For a newcomer to the game i feel this might not be for them. But for me as a fan of the whole saga for the last 19 years and on the budget Yu Suzuki had to create this game, it is everything I wanted. The voice dialog, the setting, the music, everything about it brings that nostalgia feel back from the original titles. It wont be everyone's cup of tea, but for me it is what it is and I love it.

    Saturated with charm and personality, Shenmue finally returns to us after almost two decades. Beautiful environments, fascinating NPCs and an engaging storyline. A seamless transition from the earlier games while also building greatly on the combat, training, exploration and trading aspects.

    Shenmue III doesn't try so hard to be like other modern games and embraces what it is, a Shenmue game. It's a breath of fresh air for the videogame industry and is definitely a true sequel to the Dreamcast originals.

    What Yu Suzuki did with a kickstarter game is unbelievable! The game is not a triple A, but it has all the qualities a game needs to be fun! I love it.

Games have pushed the boundaries of whats possible within a virtual world. Where does that leave a game that was developed just before the turn of a millennium? A game that at that time pushed the boundaries of what was possible within its field, A game that brought innovation in grand scale. A game that carved a path for narrative driven masterpieces like Heavy Rain and Detroit becoming human, just to name a few. Well being the innovator that pushed the agenda on story driven games. In an almost student outperforming what was taught, its successors have taken the narrative and improved the genre tenfold, so playing a game that made so many gaming movements years ago, will not be everyone's cup of tea, based on the modern games of today. If your gaming experience in life consists of time spent on Fortnite or casual trips to candy crush, then this game is not for you. But if you appreciate gaming in its art form from its very inception in the early days, when Pong was innovating on black and white screens. If you've been a gamer since as long as you can remember, treasuring the days when Atari's rocked the gaming markets. games like Out Run, Space Harrier, Hang on and Afterburner chugged through the veins of the Atari ST's massive form factor. then you will appreciate the time and energy spent building these immense game changers. incidentally all of these were developed by the creator of Shenmue. Yu Suzuki, who in my opinion is one of the founding fathers of gaming. What he has created to some may be outdated and stuck in time but to me it’s the continuation of 18 years waiting to find out if Ryo Hazuki finally catches up to Lan Di to dish out the punishment he deserves. Maybe its my nostalgic juices flowing every time Ryo awkward line of conversation draws paths onto the next route leading to the stories ultimate conclusion. or its maybe the immersion in the world around me, by watching as NPC's go about their daily life around me, how real this world feels compared to the generic rail shooters of today, I can’t say i have a modern day favourite, as games are just not made the same way, where graphics outweigh immersion, if gaming is a way to escape the worlds troubles then this game world for me is the best place to get lost in along with its predecessors.

    Shenmue has consistently been a game about calm and patience, they are themes the game is trying to convey to both the protagonist and the player. Without patience to allow yourself to be fully submersed in the world of Shenmue, you will not like it. The pace is slower than most games, but that is deliberate and by design. There is not constant action, instead there is thorough evaluation of your world and the people who inhabit it, and sometimes that is also done through combat.

    The mechanics of the game remain fairly the same from 20 years ago, for good or ill. Tank controls are present. The fighting feels refreshing and new, but also less complex than it's predecessors. Given the limited budget, I am impressed with the fighting mechanics of the game.

    Shenmue 3 is a fantastic sequel to Shenmue 1 and 2. As a Shenmue fan, I am not disappointed. As a newcomer, all I can say is watch the story cinematic to get caught up, and allow yourself to be immersed in the world of Shenmue and become Ryo Hazuki as he lives his daily life while searching for clues regarding his father's untimely death. Shenmue is a world that demands, and IMO deserves, your attention and your patience.

    I’m more than happy with the game, I didn’t expect the revolution that the first ones were, now that task belongs to Remedy with GTA series. But nowadays all “open world games” are violent, repetitive, ultra long and not very deep on their stories, so I think Shenmue is more like a very food book you like to read in calm and enjoy the story and fun of it. The fighting system is still one of the best in the insdustry.

It was clearly not an easy endeavor for a development team of such a small size (for real - pay attention when you watch the credits), but they managed to pull off a Shenmue game on a fraction of the budget.     A fantastic piece of video game history finds a worthy sequel. You'll be surprised how alive the world is. For example, each progress allows new dialog options with the NPCs which does so much for the immersion. This game isn't for everyone but if you commit yourself to it, Shenmue 3 offers a unique gaming experience.

    It is a very welcome addition into the series. For kickstarter i was expecting a lot less but this was satisfying to play and felt like the original.

    Played 11 hours so far. Absolutely everything I hoped for. The pangs of nostalgia flooding back on me are wondrous, yet it's also completely new and fresh in many ways. Positives - the music is amazing, the graphics although really dodgy in character models are actually quite nice in the rest of the game. The story ticks along nicely whilst still retaining that Shenmue charm ofPlayed 11 hours so far. Absolutely everything I hoped for. All in all from what I've seen so far, it's excellent and not at all the dud I was actually expecting. Negatives - The voice acting is still atrocious, especially Ryo, but then it's part and parcel of Shenmue I guess. I'd rather they stuck with the awful original Ryo actor, then get someone like Keifer Sutherland along, sometimes a poor yet recognisable thing is better than something better but jarring. I HATE the eating mechanic, nobody on earth Ryo's size eats as much as he seemingly needs - going from barely ever eating (or needing the toilet) in the previous games, it's completely off putting the guy is suddenly a ravenous pig. That's the only real reason I've given it a 9, the eating mechanic really is that much of a negative, as well as slowing the game down with unnecessary munching, it's also expensive. It's the one new addition I'd gladly see them remove in a patch, I've no idea what Yu was thinking adding it in other than to pad the came length. Ryo should be as big as Fatty from Shenmue 2 the amount he shovels down in this game. I guess Suzuki plays Yakuza a lot, but even in that you don't need to eat constantly, only ever really needing to when low on health or to progress story/friendship elements. So far so good, loving it. Apart from the new gluttonous Ryo and the weird waxy faces of a lot of the characters (they kinda remind me of One Piece characters)… Expand

    An epic story continues after 18 years. Great feel all around. Mix of old school and new school. Same with the graphics as well. It has the Shenmue vibe down. Only knock is the combat system. Not a fan of it.

    Runs surprisingly well on base PS4, Environments look amazing and detailed and oh so cozy., NPC visuals are mostly hit, with a few misses dotted here and there with some unimportant NPCs. Considering there are over 400+ unique NPCs the overall quality is impressive considering the budget; it really feels like a natural continuation from the previous game; which is no small feat for a gameRuns surprisingly well on base PS4, Environments look amazing and detailed and oh so cozy., NPC visuals are mostly hit, with a few misses dotted here and there with some unimportant NPCs.     I've been playing this game for the past 2 days and have been absolutely blown away! It's been such an experience playing through such a unique and immersive world and following the story of the in depth story of the Shenmue series.

    As for the gameplay, It's an improvement in terms of character movement from the previous entries.

    Introduction of a new system where you must eat is problematic and slows the game down far too often, this could do with tweaking as Ryo seems to need to eat more than any normal human who weighs his amount. It's seriously annoying to need to spend money when progressing in the story also requires money. This is something that should maybe tie into game difficulty level rather than being the normal occurance for all difficulties. Patch it in, would make the game better.

    Music is spot on and absolutely flawlessly created, some of it is from the older games which is fine and actually pulls on nostalgia strings so it was probably a smart choice.

    Graphics are a mixed bag, character models for the most part look a bit odd, Ryo and Shenhua both look fine though, Where it shines is it's environment detail which is certainly colorful and vibrant, is the environment more beautiful than Death Stranding? That depends if you prefer a world that is aiming for ultra graphical realism or a world that is colorful and beautiful.

    Fighting mechanics while on video look clunky and horrid actually do not play anywhere near as bad as they look. it's actually quite fun and enjoyable.

    Story is great, acting is Shenmue, that's what we wanted though.

    It's more of a 9 rather than a 10 just for the eating mechanics and that creating monetary issues. Sorry I just had to rebalance the score I hate dishonest people and I hate that I have to be slightly dishonest in a score to cancel those people out.    … Expand

    So far 5 hours in and it feels like we never stopped playing Shenmue from 2001.

    The game starts you right were you left off in Shenmue 3. It runs amazing on PC. I feel as this is the first game to launch on PC with no issues in a long time.

    Yu Suzuki and his team has done an amazing job. Thank you.

    This is a different type of game, it has it all. Good story, great mini games, good fighting, graphics are really good especially for a AA game. I'm very impressed how they managed to get the environment and feel of the first two games.

    Only true shenmue players will appreciate this game. The graphics aren't AAA but still beautiful and captures the old shenmue feel. Plus the controls have been modernized this is a must buy!

    New Player of shenmue. I first watched videos resume of shenmue 1 and 2 and then I tried to play to that one. And what a amazing game. Even if graphically it's not the best game for a ps4.
    Don't judge the game about the graphics but try it and you won't regret. I'm looking forward to play to shenmue 4

    Having waited 20 years for this sequel, I’m so happy they haven’t radically changed the formula!
    Some people seem to hate this game, perhaps as they’re used to modern games holding their hands.
    This is classic gaming in a modern and it’s a wonderful thing to behold.

    This is absolutely a faithful sequel to the first two, which were my favourite games on the Dreamcast. Sure it is rough graphically and clunky in parts but it plays just like a shenmue game. I would recommend if you like slow paced adventure games rich in character and atmosphere.

    As a long time fan this is exactly what I wanted. I had Shenmue preordered when I was a kid and this game brings that same excitement back that I had then. If you enjoyed 1 or 2 then this should be a perfect fit for you. Great step forward.

    Don't expect to play an AAA game with wonderful graphics, it's a dreamcast game with HD resolution, but it tells a wonderful story. This game respects the original gameplay and spirit of legendary Shenmue.

    Magic in all aspects, this qualification is personal, I find myself living those wonderful moments that 18 years ago shenmue gave us to many, it is a cult, relaxing and beautiful game that I would love that everyone enjoys.

    What a horrible experience this was. Whatever minuscule redeeming qualities this game might have are drowned out by just how infuriating it is. And I can’t think of anybody who is a fan of this franchise that can honestly call this game good with a straight face. Get this game if you’re a fan of the series, but don’t be surprised if it just ends up making you hate yourself for waiting nearly two decades for what is essentially the video game equivalent of Freddy Got Fingered.

    Shenmue 3 is a tough recommendation for general audiences. It won't please the die-hard fans of the originals due the step backwards in terms of game design. Neophytes who are curious about it will be confused and bored by the sleep-inducing pace, plus the how the voice acting has not changed since the early '00s. The visuals may have improved, and the loading times are a thing of the past, but this is still has the soul of a Dreamcast title. It won't live up to the expectations that fans have, nor will it excite interest in the franchise. Nothing of substance gets solved by the conclusion, and there's a lack of a pay-off to playing such an intentionally slow experience. The highs in Shenmue 3 involve doing what amounts to nothing; that is just taking in the atmosphere and exploring.
