Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual is a textbook case that proves not all games are easy to transition from a traditional to virtual presentation. Dialog heavy games can work in VR if you are an active participant. Not so much when you are a mere observer. This problem is further exacerbated by the lack of polish of the game’s controls. What still works is the banter between Sam and Max. The writing is good as is the soundtrack. If you are a fan of these characters, you’ll probably be able to deal with the game’s shortcomings. For the rest, your time is better spent elsewhere.

Technically unstable, the writing and performances carry things. Disappointing, but perhaps a springboard to better things. Sam and Max deserve better. [Issue#13, p.78]

I really wanted to love Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual! as much as the original or Telltale series, but it is just a compilation of boring minigames, bugs and problems with controls, that cannot be saved even by its great sense of humour and wonderfully absurd story.

Frankly I would prefer to see the same level of imagination and ingenuity in the razor sharp writing translated to another point and click classic.

There is, however, one saving grace: the writing is exceptional. Sam and Max’s bevy of pop culture references and dark jokes are a near constant presence, and most lines hit their mark. The script is sharp and remarkably funny. Even with the frustrations of the game’s technical shortcomings, we couldn’t help but laugh at many of the quips, getting a good hearty chuckle at least a dozen times across the three hour adventure. The characters and the insane world they exist in stand the test of time, and it’s a lone bright spot in an otherwise frustrating endeavour.
