The game starts a bit dull, but it gets better. Being an VN the focus is the story and the game delivers a good story. There are some puns, fun moments, mystery.
In the gameplay department you have Ace Attorney inspired mechanics: visiting locations, inspecting crime scenes, collecting clues and confronting characters with said clues. It could be better, but makes the pass.

There are lot of good quality CG's.

Brutal pacing , Lifeless animation as characters only have one sprite , Window dressing investigation elements and the occasional iffy writing here and there hurt Root Film dramatically which is sad because it's story , Characters and twist are all good . It also does not help that they probably hoped for a Last Answer-esque re-release and half assed the final chapter again . Root Film sold very poorly and with no PC release in sight I wonder what the future holds for this series

If you are interested watch it on youtube as you'll get the same exact experience I had

Writing this review to counter the score given by the smooth-brain who calls himself streetfighter01. Seriously, check his reviews, and you'll quickly see that he has some of the absolute worst takes I've ever seen in the gaming community. To give you a bit of a snippet, this clown actually gave Witcher 3 a zero, and complained about how it doesn't have a character creator. ???

At this point, the fact that he gave this game a 0 should make you think, "Oh well maybe I should give this game a shot then."

Root Film addresses some of its predecessor’s narrative shortcomings while accentuating its impressive production values. It may not offer much player agency or any challenge at all, but as a light-hearted murder mystery romp it is well worth a second (or first) trip to Shimane Prefecture.

While not reaching its full potential, Balan Wonderworld is a grand and well designed adventure, which runs superbly on PS5. It’s perfect for family co-op play. [Issue#1, p.88]

Overall, Root Film is an engaging visual novel, but as a film buff, it was doubly great experience. For anyone that falls into the Venn diagram between these two types of media, this comes recommended!
