A nice little arcade gem that rekindles the love for old-school dogfight action.

While the procedurally-generated campaign does leave much to be desired in the way of level and mission design, the core gameplay loop is solid and the missions themselves emphasise the action more than anything else, keeping consecutive playthroughs engaging. Controlling the plane is easy to pick up and hard to master, but it all pays off due to just how satisfying the gameplay is. Rogue Aces is a by-the-books arcade experience that offers a fresh take on dogfighting.

Rogue Aces takes an old formula and spins it into one of the most exciting and fun shoot 'em ups on PSN right now.

This is the arcade game the 12-year-old version of you was always meant to play. Fast, frantic, outrageously challenging and with the sort of free-form play that requires and rewards player creativity. Infinite State Games have created something very special here. I’ll see you in the skies, just try and beat my high score.

An air-combat roguelike with lots of frantic action. Many game modes which add freshness to the gameplay and renovates interest in the player.

Rogue Aces is a true accomplishment, a game that updates a formula from the very earliest days of home computing and makes it feel vital and engaging. While it may not be easy, it’s accessible to all levels of players, and goes to prove that there’s seemingly no classic genre of videogame that a few roguelike elements can’t improve.

A challenging but ultimately compelling airborne shooter, Rogue Aces soars where it counts.

Rogue Aces may not be as clever or innovative as the excellent Don't Die, Mr. Robot! but it does provide addictive roguelike dogfights that'll keep you coming back for more. Just make sure you have plenty of patience before giving it a download.

An interesting proposal that manages to be different than any other game in its genre while still being fun. It's a shame that the fun doesn't last longer.

Rogue Aces can be an entertaining blast and is sufficiently different from the competition to be worth a look. But its repetitive nature does it no favours and means it’s best taken in small doses.

Sadly, though, you'll spend more time fighting the controller than the enemies on screen. [June 2018, p.88]

Campaign: you have one life but 3 planes, keep going as long as you possibly can (hint theres a 100+ missions)
Frontline: One plane and one life, but WHEN you die, you restart from the last island you took. There’s also mission timer, you have to get to the boss island and beat the final boss in a set amount of time.
Hot Potato: your plane will explode in 8 seconds… get into another as soon as it does.
Survival: one life, one plane… survive as long as possible (hint – hot potato)

Imagine if you will an Angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other, and the demon just keeps whispering “one more game, do a little better, beat that score and best everyone else”, while the angel is saying “but you’re a brain surgeon, people will die if you don’t go to work”. All I can say is people will die, and scores will be beaten.

    I love it!
