  • Summary: 1587, 2A - 15 years have passed since the guns of the Great War at last fell silent.

    The conflict rocked the world, leaving half a generation of men and women lying dead on the battlefield. Of the many players that had acted on the world stage, only two remained; the kingdom of Cirinthia and the ancient Republic of Tariq. In time, Dimitri Noraskov, a hero to the defeated Kingdom of Arkadya, rose from the ashes. He saw his king as a coward for surrendering, and a traitor for submitting to the Treaty of Evenheart.

    So did his people.

    They supported Noraskov when he overthrew the king. They supported him as he reclaimed the lands that had been stripped of them. And they supported him as he raised an army. Noraskov had theorized that the nations of the world were still too wearied by the Great War to enforce the terms of the Treaty. Thus far, his gambit has proven
    successful.

    The Arkadyan Empire shows no signs of curbing its aggression. It is feared by many that a reprise of the Great War, that at one time could have been prevented, is now all but inevitable. But there are those that believe it can yet be stopped...

    Rise of The Third Power brings a lot to the table, streamlining the old charm by adding modern nuances to make something quite special. Invigorating combat meets intriguing writing, which makes for a perfect RPG combination. Some design choices may not sit well with everyone, but Rise of The Third Power still stands as a fantastic RPG more than worth anyone's time.

    I wonder if the writing enamoured me so much that it hampered my enjoyment of the rest of the game. The combat and dungeon crawling is fine, above-average even, but it often felt like an impediment to Rise of the Third Power’s excellent story. Nevertheless, I had a great time with Stegosoft Games’ latest offering. The team's love for the JRPG genre is shining through, and their ability to spin a great narrative helps the work lift well beyond what you usually get from "RPG Maker"-like projects.

    Rise of the Third Power is a 40 hour long, Super Nintendo throwback that shouldn’t be missed by genre fans. The only criticism I can really throw at the game is it lacks that special edge Squaresoft SNES RPGs had. Everything in Rise of the Third Power is well-done, it just doesn’t innovate. This keeps Rise of the Third Power from being an immediate classic. I loved my time with it. I actually loved it so much that I bought Stegosoft’s other JRPG, Ara Fell. While Rise of the Third Power won’t convert any non-JRPG fans, it will provide a wonderful journey to those of us already drinking that sweet JRPG Kool-Aid.

    Rise of the Third Power is an excellent old-school RPG that manages to feel fresh and exciting. Intermittent pacing issues aside, this is one adventure that you'll thoroughly enjoy so grab a bottle of booze, kidnap a princess, and save the land from an encroaching war.

    Rise of the Third Power is a fun RPG inspired by classics of the genre that only suffers from its excessive linearity. It features an excellent combat system and a story that, despite falling into certain cliches, is supported by the strength of a very entertaining and concise text that delivers exactly what you want without going overboard.

    Rise of the Third Power attempts to replicate a SNES era JRPG and does a very good job of it too. The combat is interesting and characters likeable which makes for an enjoyable adventure.

The gripping story, endearing characters and absolutely phenomenal music are really the big selling point of this turn-based RPG - however, it also has relatively satisfying character progression.

    My only slights against this game are unfortunate limitations of the genre - the turn-based combat system feels dated (though it does have some modern improvements that make it enjoyable), and it possesses some understandably low replay value. However, these faults do not detract much from the game's overall high level of quality.

    This is a game made with clear dedication and love, and went far, far beyond my expectations. I would highly recommend it to anyone, but I would especially recommend it to anyone thirsting for a story-based RPG with turn-based combat. It is equal parts approachable, endearing and powerful, and I thoroughly enjoyed my 30 or so hours with it.    … Expand
