Unfortunately, I can't rate it any higher given the current condition of the game. Whoever at Milestone made the decision to include the license tests in their current form needs to be prohibited from making any important decisions about game design. They're just terrible, and make no sense. I need to get a BMW S1000RR around a very technical track in pouring rain on street tires while maneuvering it through very unforgiving gate sections at high speed in order to participate in races? Yeah, that's just ridiculous. The amount of time trials is just annoying and not balanced at all like they were in Ride 3. Ride 3 allowed you to develop some skill and familiarity with the bikes and tracks before demanding you set fast times, but this game throws you right into the deep end for no reason.

They already released a patch, but the AI is still terrible and will just ram you off, or crash right in front of you. There's audio and visual glitches too (for example sometimes it sounds like it's raining for no reason at all). The bike list and rating system is really odd. For example the 2019 GSX-R 1000 costs more and handles better than the 2019 GSX-R 1000R even though that's completely the opposite of reality. Sometimes when looking at these bike ratings it makes you wonder if the people plugging in these numbers had anyone in the building who knew anything about riding motorcycles at all.

They claim there's more patches on the way, and for now I'm going to quit playing and hope the patches help when they're released. This is the first PS4 game I've ever played and then wanted my money back after playing. Unfortunately I ordered it digitally so that's not possible. I felt confident preordering it digitally because I was such a huge fan of Ride 3 and their MotoGP games, but I'll never make that mistake again. Milestone is now added to the list of companies that I need to wait until the game is released and reviewed before I decide to buy. And that's a real shame.

No room for error, Lack of tutorial, Not beginner friendly. Physic is great, bike detail is stunning but lack of bikes compare to RIDE 3.
I spent 10+ hours and I have to say I did not enjoy this game at all.

It honestly pains me to mark this game the way I have - but here we are at Ride number 4, and Milestone still don't understand how a rear brake operates on a motorcycle!!!

Every time, and I mean EVERY, you apply the rear brake - it locks the wheel and sends it flying towards the front of the bike. Even though in reality, that brake makes up (at most) 25% the braking force of the front - and unless you are completely stamping on the thing in real life (and have upgraded pads); it just wouldn't do that.

The rear brake ought to be there to complement the front - to aid in stability under heavy braking, and ought to be a tool to tighten your line in a corner; as with real life. But Milestone seem to have created a system that upon using the rear brake, it'll lock up in no time (even with ABS!) and throw the bike into all sorts of shapes.

This one thing, destroys any idea that you are riding a motorcycle, it robs you of the game that this should have been - a decent representation of what riding a bike is like.

Shame on you Milestone, as you are [unfortunately] the only real company making bike games these days.

Im loving this bike game its consistently improving over time, the issue i have with it at the moment is over aggressive a.i that just smash you of your bike, but im sure that will be addressed with a patch, its basically forza on wheels definitely worth a look if you like motorcycle's. 8/10

Milestone games has once again proved that they are the best in the business when it comes to motorcycle racing games. You can see improvements in every aspect of the game when compared to Ride 3. A must play for anyone who really enjoys motorcycle racing games and there’s nothing like it in the market.

One thing that makes RIDE 4 great is that the game fixed a lot of problems. However, while beginners will have trouble, this game is the best game in the series.

It's not just all glitz with next-gen graphics, entirely remodeled bikes, rider models and tracks, and an all-new approach to UI design that will make Tourist Trophy nostalgics feel right at home; powering this romp in the world of motorcycle is a new physics engine (developed in collaboration with Yamaha and Bridgestone, or so Milestone claims) that does a solid job of simulating any bike's weight and inertia.

There are, however, some noteworthy negatives: the career mode structure, which is somewhat similar to that of older Gran Turismo titles, feels a bit dated, and together with a harsh game economy it may discourage less experienced players that are only interested in having some casual fun with their favorite bike model, and while drastically improved from Ride 3's, the AI is still a bit lacking at times. The track limits are exceedingly harsh: that's no big issue on racing events, but on Time Trials crossing over means instantaneous disqualification.
Finally, playing in "Quality" mode on Xbox One X there's the occasional framerate drop; perhaps, that's to be expected from a game coming at the end of the current console generation (and designed with the next one in mind).

Overall it's an enjoyable game for the motorbike fanatic and the causal gamer alike; however, be prepared to spend a sizable amount of time just trying to get that tenth of a second faster. Whether that sounds like a recipe for fun or frustration is up to you.

Before you know it you can spend hours designing all your own gear and bikes. Also the photo mode is just amazing! I can play this game for hours. But now onto the negatives. The Auto pilot on time attacks is buggy. It's either too long so you watch the rider take 4 corners and sometimes the rider will even crash. The AI don't seem to care if you're in their way sometimes - they will just steam roll you out of the way and everyone will crash which is really annoying. The racing lines on a lot of tracks are just useless. Hopefully these bugs get sorted out asap. Overall I'm really happy. Expand

POSITIVES - fotorealistic graphics, realistic bike handling physics and track transformation through the race (you can see the racing line being rubberized during the race!), great number of tracks and events/trophies, challenging dynamic weather and day/night transitions, frequent updates and a list of free and purchasable DLCs expanding bike number, largely customizable bikes/suits/ helmets with editor mode, plenty of settings for A.I difficulty/realism/riding aids for a tailored experience, bike set-up and upgrades do translate accurately to handling qualities on track, A.I. makes mistakes too with adversaries subject to falling and crashing.

NEGATIVES - A.I. does consider your presence and reacts to your moves, but rarely makes overtaking attempts and does so without leaving the racing line. Also AT LOWER DIFFICULTY SETTINGS, they just don't fully accelerate on straights and let you by too easily.
Partly limited range of bike types - we all love sport-bikes but 4/5 models of Yamaha R-1 (2008, 2012, 2019, 2020) are more than enough. A few chopper bikes and sport-touring (Harleys, MV Agusta Turismo Veloce, Ducati Multistrada...) racing on the available street-circuits would be an interesting and different addition to gameplay!

    1. As indicated this is a very difficult game. Even with the difficulty on the easiest setting, the opponents have top-tuned bikes and race perfect lines. Not fun when you are a casual racing gamer. I am sure racing savants will enjoy it, but the rest will have to suffer in frustration and disappointment.

    2. Bike customization is lacking compared to Ride 3. I like more detail in tuning, parts, and liveries. Ride 4 downgraded/simplified all of that.

    3. There are not as many bikes to choose from. Maybe that was the cost of getting into bed with Harley Davidson? Money to purchase rights took away from work on bike models??? Just guessing.

    4. There is nothing to do if you do not race. I really enjoy Tran Turismo, but prefer Need For Speed: Shift game play. There could be a balance between racing, tuning, collecting, and some sort of storyline - even if it is just a chronicle of your journey to the top.

    5. Some of the bike stats are confusing. They seem to have some bikes rated too high in some categories and not high enough in others. This is minor compared to the other issues.

Overall, the great graphics and modeling on the existing bikes cannot save this from the, overall, player unfriendly racing and downgraded bike customization.

Casuallybplay Ride 1-3/other bike games. Somehow beat tutorial at 10 attempts. First events nope. (20+ rewinds EVERY race, changed bikes, tuned max, difficulty lowest for 2hrs. Nope. 4/7/10th always, need 3rd+. Blame Sim fans, brain-dead AI path). Scaling what scale. Tuned/40% easy default? Even my tweaks preferred physics/other settings nope. Sigh.

Series tried different angles. 4 is hard Sim/worst/boring. Forza 2 style career, nothing else. Skill ceiling too high.

4 has good ideas but it's hard. Physics/AI fair in 1-3, 4 still can't. Doublt it's Asia region career bikes I picked. GT4 no issues, Forzas (haven't iRacing or others, Project Cars 3/Shift 2 were 2nd bad to Ride 4.. Ride 4 is Motorcycle Club awkward bad.

Bike rewards for licenses are similar to Ride 3 gold them all & get bike.

Do cups, buy bike, fit class.

AI seem to not notice you. Seems the same in 5, same issues as PS2 GT games not PS4+ era. Milestone need to fix this. Pathing fair, only some off track. Just work around AI always. Vary, difficulty 'apparently'.

Can change settings of Sim/simple joint brake (if not good at regular & rear brake (handbrake on cars)). Same as Forza Motorsport tweaks of simplifying/making settings harsher/a Sim.

Has career/arcade (single race, time trial & endurance). Scale day/night/weather/time, time compression (rate), variability of weather & chance of rain settings. Not as much as Ride 5's 6 phases to transition conditions, it's a start.

Can change laps, AI difficulty (had on 40%/easy the default), opponent number 11 by default, tire wear, fuel consumption (off by default) and starting position. Tuned bike. Still hard. 1st hr.

    Reward bonuses (aids/race settings) scale.

Racing line, rewind, off track help, auto brakes, manual/auto, physics change & presets to switch to/customise.

On 1.0 disk copy 6 US, 10+ EU (circuit & highways) & 7 Asia/Oceania tracks if remember correctly.

With updates (& DLC packs) you get 8 US, 18 EU & 8 Asia/Oceania. I mean locations not layouts they vary from 1 to 4 depending. Many return, some new. Listings/preview, didn't buy DLC.

Mostly circuits, few EU highways, no original tracks, game is about licenses/bikes/driving of bikes.

All updated & look great after seeing graphics comparisons between all 4 games.

Riding gear/liveries, not my area so brief. Plenty of gear just lacks in colours, has 1000 layers for helmets, & fair variety of logos & stickers & designs on suits/helmets. 2 racing, 2 road, 1 Harley Davidson, 1 Yamaha MT (can't edit) & Motard category/template..

Element I was curious was career structure it was like FM2 but fills in what it was lacking. Not start with car, but region restrictions till a point in the game where opens up to other two. While could have gone badly. Is flexible. I thought we could get FM6 track order linearity issues, happily not.

Have less looking content but limited tracks/cups per region makes sense than dragged out. So hard even see it? Cups allow track selection of events & are varied. Usually see races, some time trial, track day. Not Ride 3 variety, instead the basics.

Then World League & Final Leagues. Opens up after certain points count from cups. Bronze to Gold vary. License was 13-16-20, early cups 16-20-25. Bronze, Silver, Gold order.

With a low point objective to pass & a high total. Example 45 low, 70 high total.

Think say GT2 of the region cups then GT World series.

Weekly challenges/other online stuff. Only covering offline.

Have 3 level bars, bike/make affinity & player level.

Messages for, add-ons,, titles, shared contents, career & manufacturer/bike affinity in the message centre.

In career you choose between US/EU/JP & from there your restricted to campaign, those regions bikes, regions tracks all untill the world championship. You don't do many cups so it doesn't become too boring. I do think content may be thin, but it doesn't drag out either. Balanced? License tests have time trials, track day & track tests (speed gates). Always appreciate mixed events. 3 or 6 event cups,/licenses it has variety. Challenging badly so, can't get the right lineup of opponents/path to ride around tracks. For track day license did it 10 times (not ideal) to line up the AI & my pace with the timer as 3 times it was not possible to brake & overtake on less than 10 seconds around a corner it just wasn't. Not happy. Driving model is odd. Realistic & harsh then 2&3. Take/leave if find it too hard, it can be possible/fun I think (simple physics too didn't use Sim). Ride 1-3 felt tough but fair & got used to over time. 10 repeats of track day license test no. Music great. Sounds fine. Good HUD.

RIDE 4 isn't the best entry in the series, but it fixes a lot of its past problems. The on-track action is amazing, and no matter what track you’re on or what time of day or conditions you’re racing in, you’re in for a fun time. It’s a challenging game, but in a good way, as it encourages you to get better and offers a wide variety of difficulty options to help you along the way.

Ride 4 offers a tonne of content for those who itching for a deep dive into an expansive career mode. Race all across the world by winning licenses to open up access into better and more advanced events. Gain affinity with various bikes and manufacturers on the way to becoming the greatest rider. However, a weak online mode, a lack of other real features outside of the career mode and having a steep learning curve for beginners prevents Ride 4 from being the complete package. With plenty of bikes on offer, and upgrades on both the 'stock' and 'racing' side of things to allow for vast improvements over the troublesome AI, this is one of the better digital biking experiences out there.

The bottom line is simple: while TT Isle Of Man: Ride On The Edge demonstrates how hardcore, unforgiving motorbike sims can be amazing on PS4, Ride 4 is simply dull. Authentic and capable, certainly, but dull nonetheless. [Issue#182, p.136]
