I gotta confess I am bit disappointed. The game isn't bad, but I was expecting a 9 out of 10 (just like the original) instead of a 6. It fails to replicate the atmosphere of the original game, and while I was playing it, it felt like something is missing... Also, what's the point of calling it a remake when it is 70% different from the original? The locations where the story is set are the same, but the campaign is different. It is just a different game. The result is an "adventure" inferior to the original, and less terrifying and claustrophobic.

The ammunition is exaggeratedly scarce and shooting anywhere else aside from the head seems uneffective, so low is the damage caused on the zombies. If you were to try to kill a zombie by shooting their chest, it would take like 30 bullets. They also exaggerated the amount of times a dead alive can get up again. When you shoot them and they fall to the floor, you have to "kill" them like 4 more times so they are dead for good
I honestly think that the unofficial remake (made by fans) that got interrupted thanks to Capcom would provide a better experience and closer to the original.

I was expecting that this game would be to the original Resident Evil 2 what Resident Evil Remake was to the first game, but it doesn't even get close. I hate to say that, but even if this was the same game but with polished graphics, would have been a better experience than this.

This is a lot inferior to Resident Evil Remake

The first playthrough was great, but the Tyrant in the 2nd playthrough is just too damn annoying. The game forces you to run away and wait for him to pass about a trillion times and it gets super repetitive

This game is probably the best remake of all time as of now, but that does not change the fact that it is a remake. I am not a fan of survival horror where you can shoot things, I am more stressed about limited inventory space and lack of ammo than the "scary" things in the game. Less enemies and more puzzles or set pieces would probably make for a game I greatly enjoy

I first played the original Resident Evil 2 around the mid 2000's, many years after it's original release. By the time I got around to play it, the game and its design were a thing of the past. By the time I got around to play it, the game and its design were a thing of the past. I enjoyed the game immensely however. Tank controls? No problem, I got used to them after an hour or two. It works well for the original games. The game was loaded with content, plenty of scares, fun characters and an interesting yet easy to follow plot. When I first heard of the remake I was thrilled, just like many others were. CAPCOM has recently being doing things right and with the success of a great game like Monster Hunter, what could go wrong?

The first thing I noticed was the plain ugly main menu. It's generic with the font all fighting games have nowadays. You can thank "e-sports"(lo) for that contribution. I started the game on "Hardcore" not because I think I am, but because the other difficulty settings don't require ink ribbon to save. The mode seems more as an afterthought or damage control to keep the real fans placated.

I chose to start the game as Leon, but something was off. Here we have a foul mouthed character who curses every time he fires his weapon. I hate gratuitous cursing, but I hate blatant and obnoxious blasphemy even more. There are subtitles in the game where "God" is misspelled. I had to play the game with the voice volume turned off. I just could not stand it. It broke immersion for me. I wanted to be the one getting scared, be the one to react. Not have Leon constantly remind me of it with an avalanche of profanity. The game is loaded with profane language. After "killing" a scripted boss Leon simply says "take that you overgrown son of a b****!". Who talks like that? Teens? Claire jumps into a sewer and says "now I will literally smell like s***.". These characters cannot complete a sentence without cursing. It's a rated M game yeah I know, that doesn't mean it has to be retarded though.

The gameplay didn't start to get boring to me until the 6th or 7th hour of the campaign. The game just isn't that scary for me. It's definitely a notch above Resident Evil 5 and 6 in terms of horror. Mr.X is the only thing that more or less injects some much needed fear into this. He could have worked better if he did something else other than grab and slam or punch you. People made such a huge deal about Mr.X, as if he was anything close to the Xenomorhp chasing you in Alien Isolation. Now that is something to crap your pants over.

Maybe the game was meant to be played on normal because "hardcore" seems really tough, but not in a good way. Navigating through the game can be done on auto-pilot, there is the illusion that it's an old school RE game, but it's not. It's pretty straight forward and the puzzles are on the easy side. CAPCOM had the right idea with it, but they clearly didn't want to exclude everyone who isn't a die hard RE fan. So the game has an identity crisis, retain the few old school fans and sell to everyone else at the same time. Aside from the graphics, this game does everything else from mediocre to standard. The jack of all trades, but master of none. This game has no soul, but nobody is going to agree. Everyone wants RE to succeed and I do too, but not if it means lying to myself. I decided to try Claire's campaign, this time on normal. Turns out that the two campaigns are almost identical. I thought CAPCOM has said this would not be the case, or something to that effect, what a letdown.

Something else I would like to add is that you can't skip the death cutscenes. You have to watch them every time you die. Worst part is that it they are in 30FPS. There is now a texture mod for the original RE2. Give that a go, suffer the controls for a bit and the dated graphics. After a few hours you won't even care or notice it. What you'll find in it is a game with soul and love. A game that is truly challenging, engaging and scary. Not this modern crap.

Constant profanity... get a thesaurus, Capcom. There was no swearing in the original.

This is made by people who thought the original game was bad. They wanted to change every thing they could. These are not Leon and Claire. This is not Resident Evil 2. The correct word here would be imposter. This game is an imposter and its characters are imposters.

Game play is fun for a while, until you get to a boss fight, then you will want to pull your hair out. I only play on Hardcore. I have never played on any other difficulty because then you don't get the ink ribbon and inventory experience of the original. Couldn't they have left those in tact while just making the bosses easier? Any why can't I break free from a zombie by mashing buttons, like in the original? Why can't I stomp a grounded zombies head, like in the original?

I beat it twice, but I don't think I will ever play it again, unless there is a mod to make the bosses not suck.

Really hate games that expect me to run past enemies instead of shooting them. Half way through the game a bunch of enemies start to appear and that annoying unkillable tyrant as well. Running like crazy, almost dying and rushing through everything is not my idea of fun. Regret buying big time. What a waste of money.

I'm not in the majority with this opinion, but this is a boring puzzle game that teases you with great shooting mechanics and barely any zombies to shoot. I hope you like shooting bosses though, plenty of them. This is a testament to why 3-6 progressively cranked up the action to the umpteenth degree.

You do the math. So, finding out that the Resi2 remake would be an over the shoulder affair ala RE4 I was already ready to throw my cash at this thing. Seeing the glowing reviews I just took the plunge. After all, even the worst RE game is worth getting at £15 on sale. Initially I was struck by the graphics and animations in the opening cut scene. Loved the tutorial gas station area but got eaten straight off the bat. Okay. Hard-core Mode really is that hard. I went for medium difficulty and started again. But, as I went through the early stages of the game I realised that the shooting is not the same at all. Because, the original game and many installments since have had one omnipresent joy guarenteed to make you feel ruddy bloody awesome: Aiming carefully at and blowing a reanimated corpses cranium into orbit in a shower of rouge confetti and gray matter. Glorious...

But...not in this game. In this game you unleash all your ammo into a zombie head and it means as much as shooting the body in terms of stopping it in its tracks. And a critical headshot is randomised but of such low probability you don't want to waste ALL your ammo finding out that the RNG messed you over and now you have to reload your save and go again, hoping for a different result. And, I know it's just a video game, but it's just unlikely that if zombies did exist that you would have to pump 11 bullets into it to get the kill, kill, kill. Because guys, these zombies also don't know when they're dead. They keep having naps and then waking up for another midnight snack like a Terminator with a digestive tract. Another irritant I couldn't get past was the subweapon system. The combat knife is used, handily to check if a zombie is in fact dead. You arm it and you can slash away below you to finish the napping dead off before they eat your feet. But, if you ever get grabbed by a zombie and munched on a little you can avoid this by stabbing the zombie in the neck and pushing him or her off you, leaving you space and time to make haste out of there. But, you CAN'T, I repeat CAN'T get your knife back from the dead undead, no matter how dead they are. It's simply so immersion breaking I rolled my eyes every time I had to walk away from a combat knife I could, in a version of actual reality, just put my boot next to create a post and just pull of out the zombie. Oh, well. I'll just get another knife then, I guess. Which is what you have to do. That's right. Combat knife is a consumable. Now, the atmosphere I did genuinely find quite foreboding and tense, due to the fact that you are, as it turns out, really vulnerable. There are tonnes of zombies in this game and you always feel like you're one turn around the corner from being outnumbered and having to fledtfootedly negotiate a safe pathway through lurching limbs and wandering zombie mouths. It's really scary. But, another strange emersion-breaking feature makes this tension just feel needless: laboured movement and molasses-like speed of running. You can run. Yes. But, even though your chosen protagonist is surrounded by famished creepers baying for your blood, the most Leon or Claire can do to save themselves in terms of agility is limp forward as if they have just found out there's no toilet paper in the upstairs loo and now have to get to another toilet whilst being careful not to crap their own pants with diarrhea. Again, unrealistic. If I see a spider in the bath I run out of there like Usain Bolt. But our guys just move like Robert Deniro in the Irishman: look young enough but move about 89 years old. C'mon guys. This is RE. Give me something powerful to level up the odds here. So, the playstyle you are forced to adopt here is much like someone speedrunning Dark Souls. Fake one way, go the other, whilst occasionally sacking an enemy who poses as an impasse. It's just boring to me.

So, RE4 continues to be the series highlight, I guess.

    - combat is deeply broken, RE2 level of difficulty does not translate into this game, basically you can't do anything without being overwhelmed by the game difficulty. It's just stupid (I can easily beat original RE2 almost blindfolded...). They played their Dark Souls card here to dodge any criticism at the poor execution.

    - to reiterate, I had no issues at all with RE2 control scheme, it was perfect. This stupid over the shoulder view makes the game unplayable.

    - in original RE2 you could kill zombies, here you can't, no matter what. Which basically means you need to run like crazy through the whole level, skipping everything, reading nothing and using an online guide to solve puzzles, because you can't collect the various clues.

    - pixel-perfect precision is required in aiming. Which basically means it's impossible to kill anything, because you have to aim at the head, which is basically impossible with a console controller. I don't care what people say about this, in RE2 you could aim at the head, here you simply can't. Almost 20 years later and you can't aim at the head of an enemy, it's simply ridiculous.

    - graphics and audio are ok, the only thing really.

badly executed game, they just thrown in a bunch of assets from RE7 and pushed the difficulty level to 11, so they can create artificial gameplay and people will play the "git gud" card to avoid criticism.

Games like this should never even be allowed on the market, it's a scam, pure and simple.

Stay away from this and invest your money in real games. Capcom is doing everything possible to kill this franchise, really.

There is almost no atmosphere of psychological horror for which the original game was famous, there is almost no music, you need to buy a soundtrack from the original and still many locations are left without music! Maybe next time zombies will need to be bought separately? By the way, zombies are cheating, you need 6 - 12 HEADSHOTS (!) to kill, although, in all zombie movies, one is enough. Lickers are also cheating, teleporting from the far ends of the corridor and instantly strike. Mr. X not scary, but really annoyng, he is teleporting from different parts of the police station and under no circumstances can enter the save rooms, yeah, a tyrant ... It is still constantly dark everywhere, such as for escalating fear, but this is a rather cheap trick. Nobody buys a game to have inconsistency and boring gameplay (I'll get onto the boring aspect later) which makes one zombie tank 15+ bullets to the head to suddenly one zombies head exploding with 1 pistol shot its beyond absurd and it ruins the flow of the gameplay.

Whilst I dislike the DA (difficulty adjustment) we must also talk about the somewhat awful controls, they have looked to put in the over the shoulder style whilst this is something I wanted they haven't implemented it effectively. Whilst the boring fanatics of the game may argue the controls being manipulated to speed run a game is necessary how can I ignore that other reputable games removing bugs and unintended things that allow people to move quicker than intended whilst Capcom leaves their game a buggy mess? All the stupid bugs and inconsistency in the game will remain just with the lacklustre AI and reliance on DA because the devs are devoid of any creativity. We're on the precipitant of pushing the barriers of gaming creativity look no further than RDR2 and Cyberpunk 2077 what does RE2:Remake bring to the table? NOTHING!

Moving towards gameplay which for me is the boring aspect, the entire gameplay is on the basis of doing puzzles, speed running the game... Who is this fun to? A small handful of people, why are you targeting a game with a budget of multi-millions of dollars towards a small crowd? The actual gameplay, boss fights are absolutely piss poor! Absolutely some of the worst boss battles I have ever, EVER seen! I mean, literally what were they even thinking? All the latest technology available and we are talking about a boss battle being no different to fighting a bog standard zombie? Shoot the big glowy eye, really that is it... Such a weak set piece.

Let us also have a quick little talk about the devs being lazy with audio queues, seriously all of the different pistol types sounding the EXACT SAME!?! Are you kidding me? I will also break this into animations, when shooting the guns it doesn't really seem like you are actually firing a real gun when firing the handguns.

I will give credit where credit is due whilst RE2:Remake massively fails on gameplay, being fun, consistency and giving a true B scenario it does get the atmosphere right. The game has good nods to the original with the original soundtrack it does somewhat stay true to the original. However I'm not ending it on a positive note because this game is absolutely not GOTY, for once I must say I think Capcom rushed a title its not normally something they would do but I am sure as anything that they have done so with this. It could have been much better but it appeased a very very small portion of their audience and ruined the games replay-ability.

Other technical flaws include a weird shiny gloss effect inside the labs that feels like the backgrounds are corrupted, zombies at distance go 15 frames per second, facial animations don't exist or are out of sync with the voice

Other technical flaws include a weird shiny gloss effect inside the labs that feels like the backgrounds are corrupted, zombies at distance go 15 frames per second, facial animations don't exist or are out of sync with the voice acting, both characters stories are exactly the same minus some locked doors or branching paths.

They also changed Sherry's infection storyline.

Resident Evil 2 (Original and beta) are superior.

This game is short. Way too short and very slow. If you could run faster or non stop then you would be able to complete it in 5 hours. It doesn't last more than 10 or 11 hours if you are slow and exploring everything like me. Not worth the price. Get it cheap if you can and I would recommend Resident Evil 7 over this. It's much better.

The atmosphere of horror is overwhelming and proves that in 2019 there is a place for a Resident-like story in which the modern visuals heighten and not lessen the fear. It’s the best Resident Evil ever. [03/2019, p.40]

The stunning graphics, incredible survival horror combat and wonderfully eerie setting make picking up a copy of Resident Evil 2 a no-brainer.

Resident Evil 2 is a wonderful recreation of a believed original that, not only recaptures the glory of that game, but also improves upon it from a visual and gameplay standpoint. All in all, don’t miss out on this one.
