Great story, graphics and immersive world, but has some extremely annoying forced LARP features, such as slow animations for picking stuff up and doing things (yeah, immersive at first, but gets really boring on the long run watching your character to use 10 seconds to pick up a bottle of rum), disabling running at certain places just to waste time, very tedious semi-interactive cut scenesGreat story, graphics and immersive world, but has some extremely annoying forced LARP features, such as slow animations for picking stuff up and doing things (yeah, immersive at first, but gets really boring on the long run watching your character to use 10 seconds to pick up a bottle of rum), disabling running at certain places just to waste time, very tedious semi-interactive cut scenes where all you have to do is to press forward for five minutes. Why not just have a real cut scene or let the player control the character?

I understand that some people want to LARP a cowboy, but normal people are not interested in that. They just want to play the game.

Also lots of stupid progression based locked stuff. Why allow players to earn money if you don't allow them to buy anything with it. And still in 2023 contains lots of annoying bugs, e.g. changing your weaponry randomly and not allowing you access your horse to get the right ones back.

Without LARPing and bugs a solid 10/10

I have come back to try this game over and over again and I just can't bring myself to finish this game. The graphics are beautiful, sure, but the gameplay is below average. There's not a whole lot to do in the baren open world, besides a few side quests, hunting, or fishing, which feels rather pointless. Most buildings you can't enter or rob, and majority of npcs will pull guns out while your rob them while having a shotgun in their face. Expand

Set in the vast open-world landscape of the American Wild West, the game promised an immersive and thrilling experience. While many praised the game's stunning graphics, detailed narrative, and character development, there is a growing sentiment among some players that the gameplay itself falls short of expectations. In this article, we will explore the reasons why Red Dead Redemption 2 can be perceived as lacking in excitement and why it may be considered boring by some.

    1. Pacing and Repetitive Activities

One of the primary complaints about Red Dead Redemption 2 is its slow pacing and the abundance of repetitive activities. The game's realistic portrayal of the Wild West might have been intended to immerse players fully, but it often feels like a burden. Endless horse riding across vast landscapes, maintaining the camp's needs, and completing mundane chores for the gang can become monotonous and tedious after a while. Although realism is important in a game, it shouldn't come at the expense of engaging gameplay.

    2. Limited Interactivity in the Open World

Despite the expansive and visually impressive open world, the level of interactivity with it is surprisingly limited. Players may expect to engage in various dynamic activities, but many of the in-game events feel scripted and lack meaningful consequences. While there are random encounters and side quests scattered throughout the world, the majority of these interactions are rather superficial, failing to leave a lasting impact on the overall gameplay experience.

    3. Clunky Controls and Mechanics

Some players have criticized the clunky and often frustrating controls and mechanics of Red Dead Redemption 2. Maneuvering the main character, Arthur Morgan, can feel sluggish and imprecise, particularly during intense combat sequences. Additionally, the game's complex systems, such as weapon management, item crafting, and horse handling, can be overwhelming, leading to a steeper learning curve and potentially deterring casual players.

    4. Limited Player Agency

While the game's narrative is well-crafted and emotionally charged, it can also be quite linear, leaving little room for player agency. The choices available to the player often have minimal impact on the overall story, leading to a sense of disconnection from the character's progression. A more open-ended approach to the narrative could have added a layer of excitement and replayability to the game.

    5. Lack of Meaningful Rewards

Red Dead Redemption 2's focus on realism extends to the rewards system, which can feel unrewarding for players seeking a sense of accomplishment. Completing missions and side quests may not always yield substantial rewards, leaving players feeling like their efforts are not adequately recognized. A more balanced reward structure that incentivizes player progress could have made the gameplay more satisfying.

    Conclusion

While Red Dead Redemption 2 received critical acclaim for its storytelling, world-building, and attention to detail, it's essential to acknowledge that it may not cater to everyone's preferences in terms of gameplay. The slow pace, repetitive tasks, limited interactivity, clunky controls, lack of player agency, and unsatisfying rewards system contribute to the perception of boredom for some players. Ultimately, the game's appeal largely depends on individual tastes, with some players finding the immersive experience captivating, while others may consider it lacking in excitement.

TBH after several hours of gameplay the game seems kinda boring. Too many systems to learn, too many shortcuts to memorize. I don't really care about the characters and the story.
However the most annoying thing is the rockstar launcher that is launched by the epic launcher. So there are 2 launchers starting just to play the game.

There is a lot that seems unfinished and unpolished which is hidden by how good it looks. Expand

The hunting mechanics (not touched by reviewers in the slightest, but more so by completionists) are completely luck-based and the '10 out of 10' scores likely come from people with only 1 or 2 playthroughs (I myself, as some reinforcement of credentials, have 603 hours as of writing this review, and 100% completion). Despite it's seriously gripping, and no doubt 10/10 story, rockstar games clearly new that the reviewers, IGN for example, and people that actually matter within the community of gaming, would do the bare minimum and only play through the story once and assemble an effortless review, as was done time and time again with the most dry and overrated game of the century, GTA V, focusing too much on satire and exaggeration of characters, instead of an actually gripping story, which yet still received a 96 on this platform itself. Going for 100% completion a second time, hunting, in vain, I realised that I should review this game for what it is: a game focused only on story and realism, instead of letting people who actually commit to the game enjoy it. 4/10 gameplay, 10/10 everything else, so like a 5 out of 10 overall considering that gameplay is actually more important than whatever the hell rockstar likes to focus on. However, the game's pacing can be a bit slow at times, with long stretches of travel time or side quests that don't always feel necessary. Additionally, the controls can be a bit clunky and difficult to master, especially when it comes to horse riding or gunfights.

Overall, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a must-play for fans of open-world games or Westerns. Its stunning visuals and immersive story make it an unforgettable experience, even with its flaws. However, the game's pacing and control issues prevent it from reaching the heights of perfection, resulting in a solid 7/10 rating.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have just finished the main storyline and I really ask myself where all the hype comes from. Gameplay wise it is pretty bland: ride to location x, wait for „everything goes south cutscene“ and shoot your way home. I was prepared for that and I thought to myself „at least everyone says it has a great story“ and played anyway.

But the story is just your generic „antihero struggles with his lifestyle and tries to be a good guy“ storyline. Over hours and hours you play the exact same thing with no real progression of the storyline. The story picks up pace in the last third of the game but the surprising revelations are not that surprising at all and I cannot understand at all why almost everyone is calling it a masterpiece? Have you watched a movie in the last 25 years? Then there’s a good chance, you have a huge overlap in story tropes

I'd say the game is a must try only for the amazing view of birds in the sky. However don't be fooled by the critics high score. They are a bunch of hypocrites who want the game to succeed only because it's a western game and somehow it reflects the criminal legacy of the west.

Your character's group quickly become your shackles, even conversations with them get overly repetitive and dull. Your character too, is dull - not the bad but fun criminal I wanted him to be. Disappointing how you cannot access the other half of the map (Red Dead 1) until the very end when it feels pointless to continue. They tried too hard making this a real-life simulator rather than a fun game like the first Red Dead game was when you feel like a rogue, like a true lone wolf. Many claim it to be perfect, but in truth it is slow and time consuming, with minimal depth in gameplay. All enjoyment is weighed upon the beauty and realism, which is reflected both in the world and the storytelling. One of the best open world games for sure, but it really doesn't compete in the gameplay department, which is first and foremost what a game should strive to do.

It’s an huge, outstanding piece of art – worth the hard-earned cash as well as countless hours that are needed to get to know at least some of the attractions of Rockstar’s rendition of Wild West. For those who put story first – the biggest virtue of Red Dead Redemption 2 is that it sets the stage for RDR 1 and does it wonderfully. [13/2018, p.40]
