Pirates Outlaws is a very derivative but well-crafted roguelike card game. Its greatest strength is the amount of content and variety, which will keep players eager to try new characters and regions glued for many hours. The battle system is the one familiar to fans of Slay the Spire and similar games, and luck plays a big role, but most of the time it is fun to set off on an ambush.

Although there are problems with making most of its content available and also an excessive randomness for combat and progress, Pirates Outlaws is one of the best current roguelikes, with a lot of personality and a considerable challenge.

Pirates Outlaws is very well put together game that relies too much on luck. It can be just as satisfying as it can be frustrating. You never really feel in control and even the best laid plans can be brought hurling down by the randomness that governs every game mechanic. If you are not discouraged by the unpredictable odds, you will discover plenty of content for an indie title that can keep you entertained for long hours. On the other hand, if you feel the need to be in control all the time, Pirates Outlaws will not be your cup of tea.

A seaworthy addition to the roguelike deckbuilder genre with a treasure trove of content.

Ultimately, if you’re a fan of Slay the Spire, you’ll undoubtedly get a kick out of Pirates Outlaws. It’s a solid entry into the roguelike card-based battler genre, but we just can’t shake the feeling it’s a little too much like its inspirations to really stand out. Still, it’s safe to say that if you’re looking for more Slay the Spire-type action, it’ll do a decent job of scratching that itch.

Pirates Outlaws will be immediately familiar to Slay The Spire veterans in terms of gameplay but suffers from too wide a focus. Also not being able to save a lengthy run is pretty unforgivable. Its mobile roots are just that bit too evident too.
