Maybe the best JRPG ever, and maybe the most stylistic game ever as well. The game is well paced and fun for the entire 100+ hour playthrough, which is astonishing. Takes one of the most beloved and iconic JRPG series and improves upon it in every way. Alternates between your high school / social experience and going into dungeons. Quirky, amazing, and a game everyone should experience.

A few low res textures, and occasionally redundant dialogue are the only things that fall a hair away from perfection. A well deserved 10/10 and a true masterpiece. Easily the best game I've played in a decade. Expand

I keep watching the events of the game and holding my breath as it skirts around and sometimes plows through cultural issues that I care about or find problematic. I don't know if I agree with what the game is saying all of the time, and that's complicated by the cultural differences between myself and the developers, but it is making me think about what is happening every step of the way, and I can't offer higher praise to a game. For a Persona sequel to work, Atlus have placed the burden upon themselves to innovate with each game. Persona 5 feels like a game that jumped 3 generations from Persona 4. While the story is of the same quality of past games (which is a huge plus), every other aspect is a huge improvement.

Persona 5 is a game that retains the massive scope of past games, but keeps it alive for the PS4 era, meaning that Atlus essentially had to work 5 times as hard to make the game retain its effectiveness as a modern game. The game will run 90-100 hours, and each of those hours is meticulously crafted and controlled by a massive variety of polished content. All of it, side content included, never feels like it distracts from the main themes or story.

This game should be celebrated and remembered for years to come.

Case in point, why is Persona 5 good? Well let's start with the graphics - HOLD ON, I know you might think that graphics don't matter and I totally agree with you, however, Persona 5 has a unique style that makes the graphic stylish and very interesting to look at. The game's flashy, colorful, cel-shaded and incredibly well designed: the other game that just came to mind was persona 4 with its colorful environment, but persona 5 ramps it up to 11 and makes the game look beautiful, as well as stylish. I mean...just look at the intro, or at the choice option, at the menu screen: it reeks of "pop", something that reminds me of the 90s it's just incredible. Again, the only game that I felt this way was persona 4 and that game was already great in the visual ways.

How's the gameplay? It's turn-based combat at its finest, a system that not many seem to like because "it's too old", but Persona 5 not only uses it yet again to show that it's still valid but improves it, expands it and includes elements from previous SMT such as the demon dialogues to recruit shadows and, most importantly of all, better and non-randomized dungeons (although the random dungeon still exists, it's just a sidequest). The combat controls are much more simplified and much faster too, making you switch persona on a whim, add the fact that the combat was simplified by removing "damage type" (there was slash, pierce and blunt) and also improving physical attacks (they do more damage than before and miss a lot less), the game really shines through with ease.

Granted, I didn't enjoy how little the SP is and how quickly it runs out, and how hard it is to get items for recovering SP in general, but that's a nitpick at worst.

And while I won't spoil the story, I honestly found it simple yet interesting, very interesting...to the point that "I just had to know what was going to happen". I kept wondering what was going to happen after the next dungeon was over and while the game hints with its flashback scenes - another nitpick because I highly despise flashbacks - I still wanted to know what was going to happen to the characters.
Right the characters: I really love them, especially Morgana and how he's so sure of himself yet adorable at the same time. I won't lie: I didn't like Teddy in p4 for how "disgustingly" nice he was, but Morgana just felt more of a reliable character overall. The others are also pretty likable and very...relatable too: they're disliked by everyone, they're people who did big mistakes, they're people with difficult childhoods. In other words, they're misfits who struggle to get into the Japanese society and the MC has a criminal record too. It was very refreshing: unlike p4 and it's cheerful, the bright cast of super happy characters with no worries in their world, the p5 cast is yes cheerful and happy but has also to worry about their ranks and their place in society.
And as someone who has a mentality far different from the country he currently lives in (I did live abroad for few years while younger), I can totally relate too.

I want to add my nitpicks as well, with my biggest being them taking a lot from p4 in terms of time management: you can only go into the dungeon in the afternoon and do NOTHING at night "because you're tired", forcing you to plan far ahead of time. Doing the dungeon literally limits your daily routine in many ways: you can't study, you can't go out and do a bath, you can't create lockpicks (VERY needed), you can't even hang out with friends...nothing. So be ready to program your stuff!
Secondly, the game map is very...confusing at first and I honestly got lost quite a lot before being able to quick travel to my locations. I guess it's because of the camera being free but I won't lie that I found myself wandering cluelessly for the first 10 hours.
And third, the time for clearing dungeons is VERY SHORT: talking about 2 to 3 weeks tops and not only that, your time limit is shorter because you're supposed to do "something" BEFORE finishing the dungeon, which requires an additional day. Which means, DON'T REACH THE END ON YOUR LAST DAY, OR IT'S GAME OVER.

And now for a bigger flaw: the game doesn't allow streaming and while it doesn't affect me, a friend of mine does and I thought to add this up for those who are hardcore streamers like her.

With that said, go get this game if you miss the old JRPGs, those with turn based combat, great stories and rewarding system. It's not perfect by any means it sure is close to being it!

If you own a PS3 or PS4 this is probably one of the best games you will play, but I put it at a 9 because turn based fighting is not everyone's cup of tea, and there are some issues with transitions between combat and exploration. To me though, this is what an RPG should be. I would say the only thing that may be missing is the ability to customize your own character and have preferences in that regard, but it's the best RPG game I've played in a while.

Persona 5 is just as good as Persona 4.
Better in some aspect and worse in some other.
The NPC social links, the soundtrack in general, the velvet girls the combat and the level designs are better in P5.
But the pacing, the normal student events, and the enemies are better in P4.

Ever since I finished Persona 4 on the PS2 many years ago, I've been waiting for this game to come out and my expectations for this game were astronomically high. And, while I would say it didn't live up to that, the game is almost as perfect as I was hoping it would be. There are a few very minor issues that keep it from reaching the perfect heights that I had hoped for but nothing to keep this from being the best JRPG to come out for a very long time and one of the best games for the current console generation.
It begins and ends with the Story and, while it takes literally hours upon hours of gameplay to finally pick up steam, it has a very satisfying ending and final boss. The dungeons are a big key to that too as they are handmade instead of randomly generated like previous games. While some of them drag on a little too much, (especially one of the ending dungeons), they really set the tone for the game at that point and the bosses were very well designed.
The characters are also very well done. There are a few standout characters, including the new "mascot" character in this game, Morgana. However, I'd still say that, as a group, Persona 4's cast was a bit more memorable but that might only be from the amount of time I've spent with that game. The voice acting is superb and not just for the main cast. The side characters are really well done too but that's to be expected. I'm a bit disappointed that there wasn't more VO's at some of the more important parts of the game, especially a few scenes at the end, but there's hundreds of lines of dialogue already. That might be a good idea for any kind of remake that will hopefully happen in the future.
The combat is the same but they've added two new types of damage: Psy and Nuke. They've also added new Personas in the game, but the bigger story might be that they left some of the most controversial monsters in the game. Google the Persona "Mara" and you'll know what I'm talking about. However it was really cool to see some regular Personas like Jack Frost and Pixie in 3D. Plus the new Personas are very cool looking and not just the main characters. The party members have some amazing new Persona designs and it's probably the best collection or Personas so far I think. Special mention has to be made for the music too. The Persona series has always had some of the best music in video gaming and this game was an excellent reminder of that. It's one of the few series I'd pay to buy the soundtrack of and listen to it over and over again.
There's one big caveat that I want to mention for anyone playing this game: it takes literally dozens upon dozens of hours to complete and it's not an easy game. This is not a series for beginners or people who don't like RPG's. However, if you can deal with all of that, you'll find a game and a series with a ton of heart and promise. This game in particular, while it took almost a decade to be released, shows that the guys at Atlas still got it. And with the way things went with Persona 4, I imagine we will be seeing a few spinoffs and, hopefully, a bigger and better remake in the next few years. Till then I'll be going back in into this world, albeit at a much slower pace.

Battle System: 9/10. The battle system is turn based which would usually be a turn-off in 2017 but it manages to be unique enough with the addition of guns, knockdown weaknesses, and ambushes that you never feel like you're simply grinding. Graphics/World Design:

Graphics/World Design: 9.5/10: The graphics are good and they fit a very 3D anime design. The main complaint I have is that the anime cutscenes are used very well in the first part of the game and end part but oddly underused in the middle. That being said the world design of the palaces is great. The thieve outfits and color usage is simply perfect. It's simply artistic. Yusuke would approve.

Soundtrack: 9.5/10. Certainly an odd jazzy soundtrack. It took a little getting used to for me but it definitely fits every scene and by the end I craved each song.

Story: 10/10. Absolutely an amazing story. You get tied into each character and each confidant. You want to know the full main story and each subplot. The idea of "stealing villains' hearts" is intriguing and the palaces are an excellent refection of the villains' mental state.

Side Quests/Bonus Material: 9.5/10: The game does a good job of giving bonus mission in Momentos via Mishima so you're never lacking for extra missions. Persona 5 also does a good job at giving you more to do in a second play through which is pretty much necessary if you want everyone's full story.

Misc: 9.5/10. It's a great game and playing through everyday is amazing especially with the fact that the entire game up to a certain point works as a flashback. the only negative is that you need to play it a second time through to get everything from the game which leads to a high hour commitment to gameplay.

Summery: Persona 5 is a great game with an enthralling story. It's style keeps you interested and wanting more. The negatives are few and far between and it ever manages to innovate on a very classic battle system.

As for the game, I love how they changed the dungeons. They were the worst part in old Persona games. Now they're amazing and stylish - stealth is simple, fun and not tedious at all. The battle system is better than ever and negotation is a nice bonus. Characters are great so far, probably better than they were in P4G. Music fits the game and it's really catchy. Honestly, I don't see any flaws in this game. I guess you could argue about the graphics, but then again - the art style is gorgeous.

Its been a while since I've enjoyed a turn based game and ATLUS does well by putting there twist on it with things like charming menu designs, witty dialogue and a catchy song all during battle.

P5 has some very minor faults though, I did feel the dialogue and conversations were too long and even repetitive at times throughout the whole game and the stealth and cover system is quite clunky at times.

    The Good:
+ Excellent story and memorable characters, love it +2
+ Cool anime art style and visuals +1
+ Turn based awesomeness with its own unique twists to it +1
+ Memorable soundtrack that is download worthy +1.5

    The Bad:
    - Lengthy conversations and repetitive dialogue -0.5

    The Ugly:
    - Clunky cover system which can get annoying -0.5

    Persona 5 is magic, 9.5/10:
I can see this not being for everyone but if you like the whole "living a normal Japanese teenage student life but secretly live a second life killing shadow demons" lol then definitely pick this up or pick it up-n-try when on sale.

One of the best games I have ever played. Everything in this game is 10/10. I can't wait for more Persona games in the future.

Persona 5 is an absolutely amazing game that convinces with its art style, music and story. It has anything one could ask for such a game and more. The turn-based battle system offers a wide array of opportunities. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is definitely recommended to give it a go.

Persona 5 beats every other turn-based RPG in terms of production values, combat, story, symbolics, character design, music, pace and variety. 2017 is a great year for gaming and Persona 5 confirms this with a load of unmatched swagger.
