While there are changes from the previous version, most of them are meant to look good on a screen and little else. The gameplay is easier so you can get through the battles faster for the LP audience that doesn’t want to watch battles and wants to get back to the story and full of flashy additions that don’t add to the gameplay but look good. Same with the story, lots of little changes to make things look nice like new character portraits, a new font, texture overhauls in some locations for a LP audience but don’t actually change anything if you are just playing the game for yourself. There is one new palace, but again it is mostly about looking nice and has trash writing and the gameplay for it is nothing new. Even the new characters are meant to look nice (like Kasumi bouncing around with her gymnastics) but actually don’t add to the story at all and have boring confidant routes and poor characterization.

If you aren’t into LPs just play the original again and wait for the inevitable anime/OVA for Royal and skip playing this game entirely. If you haven’t played the original, go buy that instead because it is the same game basically but significantly cheaper.

This is a game where you probably have decided whether or not you will love the game before you have bought it. There are plenty of people here that declared the original a perfect game, so any positive changes would warrant another perfect score, meanwhile there are plenty who decide this game didn’t need to be made and would have given it a fail rating no matter what was in it.

There are plenty of people here that declared the original a perfect game, so any positive changes would warrant another perfect score, meanwhile there are plenty who decide this game didn’t need to be made and would have given it a fail rating no matter what was in it.

For me the devil is in the details when I look at how to rate this game and for me, if you are charging as it would cost to make a whole new game you need to have enough changes and additions to be as much as a new game and Royal doesn’t even come close to that - and with several years between the two versions that is really inexcusable. It is on the same system so it isn’t like controls had to be changed or images had to be resized. Outside of the dungeons most changes are minor such as different particle effects, new character busts, and slight changes to word choice in the dialogue. In the dungeons battle has been given some spit and polish and are really the highlight of Royal, but nothing extreme and I definitely think some bad reviews are downplaying the good aspects of this version.

That being said, if the new characters or story were amazing it could still have justified Royal being worth it but it does not. Other reviews posted here go into more specifics but most of the reviews that discuss the story at all and are /not/ a two sentence blurb about how there is sooo much new content and the graphics are so much better say the new story sections are not to their liking. Kasumi is not popular with fans and I can see why as she is barely part of the team and much of the game is shamelessly begging the audience to find her cute, the new palace added to the end is a beat for beat copy of the plot of persona 4, and any developments from the new section are undone by the ending (such as Goro’s new developments) making the new sections feel like a waste of time. I would have much rather has something like the new dungeon that was added to Golden where it was cleaning up a fraction of the villain or FES dealing with the aftermath of a character’s death to provide more closure to the cast. The new ending for Royal is also hilariously unsatisfying, I thought I had messed up and gotten a bad ending because it was sadder and more distant than the original game. Anyone who says this version is an unquestioned improvement after that ending must not like the phantom thieves other that Goro or the new characters very much.

I would have given this a 4.5 or something but since this site can’t I’ll settle for 4. This version doesn’t add as much as you’d hope, the new story sections are less than ideal, and so you are mostly buying this version over the old one (or replacing you old game for this one) for gameplay upgrades.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know how Pokémon games would always release a 3rd version of a region that had slightly better graphics and small region changes, but it was otherwise buying the same game again just as a definitive version (like ruby and sapphire had emerald)? That is what this game is. Only Pokémon realized that people thought that was dumb and started making sequels to games instead (like black 2/white 2) and are now experimenting with DLC, while persona fans are apparently thrilled to pay for the same game they’ve played already just because there is one new palace, some minor graphics and battle tweaks, and a new party member that only decides to get off her butt and do something right before the game ends. The worst part is most of the improvements aren’t even that good. Grappling hook was great but most of the gameplay improvements are just more buffs/ammo/items or filler sections in existing palaces, graphics are slightly better but not noticeable most of the time, and the new characters were total disappointments. Call me when they remake this game in a way that actually fixes the problems of the original, like the stupid airlock puzzles in the spaceport, Morgana running away adding nothing to the story, and cleaning up plotholes like the traitor not even checking to see if the person he shot is in confirmed dead and in the morgue before moving on with his plans. And most of the game other than battle sections and the new section is just graphics upgrades that aren’t different enough from the original to be worth it for most people. I would have much rather they cut the crappy new characters (seriously, they all are boring and or badly written) and have had Kasumi as a female protagonist option or removed the graphic changes and made this a switch or pc port. I would have given this a mixed score and not a bad one but it is expensive compared to the original so it isn’t a great game and it is expensive so totally not worth a buy. Expand

    Game-play: 1
The only changes from the original are exploit fixes and changes to make a game that wasn't really that had easier such as copying the simultaneous attacks from the Golden (now called 'showtimes'), adding more SP items to the palaces, and passing out bullets like candy. Newcomers may enjoy but returning players that don't enjoy playing an easier version of a game they have already played will not enjoy Royal.

    Music/Sound: 1
The music is the same as the original, missing a great opportunity to add Lotus Juice back into persona. And honestly? I liked the old battle theme better.

    Graphics & Visuals: 1
The same as the original but with minor tweaks like busts that can turn their heads and putting the busts in little boxes during phonecalls. I expected much more for the price.

    Story/World-building: 0
Royal fails to fix the issues with the original story and adds new sections and events that are a grand waste of time and don't build on the story or characters in any meaningful way. I'm completely serious, Royal makes the story of P5 worse instead of better.

    Characters: 0
The new characters, I'm sorry, royally suck. While Maruki is decent with a story that works but is pretty messy, the other two are straight-up fails. Jose is nothing but a cute face only there to add an unnecessary mechanic and Kasumi is pointless and could be used as a guide on how not to handle complex characters by having dozens of ideas attached to a single character but not fleshing any of them out and backtracking on her development by the end. While we will argue forever as to who P5's best girl is, at least we can now narrow down who worst girl is: Kasumi and/or her sister.

The Royal is the opposite of that. The Royal is 'safe'. Every new addition feels like it was it was decided by a room of directors based on what would be popular and not make anyone mad instead of making changes to make the game better. The new gameplay isn't better, it doesn't add something you may have to learn or takes practice or strategy to pull off, it just lowered the games difficulty like this version of the game was aimed at a younger audience by adding stuff like adding new buffs and making crafting items easier. Many of the game additions are just silly minigames and art improvements that are OK but nothing special and feel like they were added to pad things out. The new characters are safe having bland designs and not being very rebellious (except the antagonist, but even he would have been a good guy if he wasn't so forceful and asked before he used his powers on people) and the old characters all have the blandest reactions like the writers were scared people would call them OOC if they did anything new or unexpected. The new palace added at the end feels like it would have been a generic filler episode or arc in an anime instead of being the new finale of a game's remake. The Royal is just P5 with silly additions and an identity crisis and I am disappointed.

While this game does fix some of the issues with the original, like fixing exploits and having Morgana not keep you inside as often, most of the changes are entirely cosmetic (like new character portraits and more dynamic menus) and many issues like storyline issues, sections of palaces that were annoying, and bosses that are spammy or take forever to beat are not fixed. Most of the additions to the game turn out to be filler with things like characters that don’t effect the storyline and a new palace/semesters that you can literally skip and are things that have been over exaggerated by the advertising (the new semester is only a month long, the new party member is only on the team for the optional part of the game, the preexisting characters other than Akechi get very little new content other than the showtime feature and new dates).

So overall the game isn’t worth a purchase to most fans, even if it wasn’t as expensive as it is. Maybe you could buy this in a few years when the price is more fair for the amount of content you get, but by then Atlus will probably remake P5 again to squeeze a little more money out of fans.

    - Fixes some word choice in dialogue and updates fonts
    - A new month of the game, including a new palace is included - New confidants and arcana are added and Akechi is now a proper confidant

    Cons:
    - Old save data from the original will not carry over
    - New month can be missed if you don’t do specific confidants. I recommend looking at a guide.
    - The new characters have almost no development outside of the new month (the month you can skip)
    - The new content has almost no baring on the overall story outside of changing the ending
    - The new party member is only on the team for the new month and then leaves at the end of the game
    - Gameplay is polished, but old plot holes are untouched - Only 10 to 20 hours longer than the original game
    - Expensive and has a lot of DLC
    - The new ‘true’ ending doesn’t tie up loose ends and seems to deliberately leave several things unanswered as hooks for spin-offs
    - Sexy Playboy Bunny Shiho is now a thing (eww), yet the English version has some minor censorship of other scenes later in the story
    - Since Kasumi and other aspects of Royal don’t seem like they will be in Persona 5: Scramble, the upcoming sequel of Persona 5, this game may not be canon (but it is unknown right now).

So the cons outweigh the pros, and that isn’t even talking about personal choice like if you like the new characters or not. While the game does have good aspects, playing the original is better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. More like “Persona 5: false advertising edition”. Seriously, almost everything said about this game is a lie or stretched truth or abusing misleading wording to trick people.

You see the girl with the red ponytail (Kasumi is her name) that takes up more of the cover than the mascot? The girl who is the main focus in almost every piece of advertising? - Ha, she is barely in the game! She’s in the main storyline but doesn’t really interact with anybody other than the protagonist and Goro and only joins team only after the original story ends in a section that only has one palace and only happens if you to max a certain characters confidant before a certain date.

The advertising also brags that the game was 30% bigger and too big to be DLC. That’s a laugh. Yeah, the file size of the game is about 30% bigger than the vanilla game, but the actual game is like 15-20 hours longer if you include the unlockable new palace. Most of what makes it bigger are just more images and higher quality images/textures, including things that nobody cares about like changing the hotel where you name the team which is a location you only see one or twice and isn’t important at all.

This is supposedly the ‘polished’ version also fails to polish the game:
-The story sections, other than cramped in additions, are untouched outside of slight wording choices instead of actually fixing issues with the plot or characters. The ‘polish’ outside of gameplay is almost exclusively minor graphical changes like more bloom and characters busts turning their heads more in portraits as if that is what gamers care about. The only aspect of the story the actually try to play with is Goro. They try to develop him but since the game’s main storyline requires him to wear a facade it most becomes fangirl fodder. Also, instead of tying up loose ends (without going into spoilers), they end up creating a new one by making what happens with Goro more ambiguous and creating new unanswered questions regarding what happened to him. -Gameplay ‘polish’ consists some changes that are mostly just padding the palaces with new parts (if you took out all the extensions, you could have made a new palace and had something else in the stupidly short new semester) and changes to how weapons/guns upgrade and refill as if they wanted players to be able to auto-rush most of the game instead of making the gameplay more engaging.
-And despite this being a version of a game on the same console that is supposed to be enough to warrant buying the game again, they fail to let you carry over from the vanilla game. While you get a starting bonus from having a save from the vanilla Persona 5 , it is a small one. Prepare to mash the X button through confidants you have already done because you are going to have to do it all over again and refuse all of your old personas.

This game gets a hot 0 from me because there is no reason to play or buy this game when the original is better and still available on the same system.

A sad remaster that fails to fix issues with the original like the frustrating airlock puzzles, the lack of development with many cast members, and slog of an ending and instead adds a personality-less new girl, a sloppily written new palace and ending, and an ugly new opening number. Persona 4 golden did everything this game does, did it better, AND was a port to a portable system.

Then there are the times of the game where you are not allowed to do a damn thing outside what the story want you to do, these parts could have been automated to speed those parts up.
And that one boss that is all about you being lucky enough that the mobs does not run away to be replaced by new mobs that then run away, and over and over again.
There are also some long boss fights at the end that get boring.
Oh, and that part where IF your main character dies it is game over even though you have items and team members that can revive, does not happen often but the fact that this is in the game is simply bad design.
Guess I will go watch the extra semester somewhere because I sure as hell can not be bothered to spend more time with this dlc.

But as soon as the intro sequence is over, the game stops being a game and starts being a book.

you can basically put the controller down because you're in for hours of written dialogue, this is about 70% of the game, you're basically spending 100 hours reading a collective 500 page book, and if thats not all, this book is poorly written on it's majority: the dialog is corny, some scenes are pointless and add no new information whatsoever, the characters usually explain in excruciating details every unimportant thing that's happening, and the same information gets repeated and churned over and over, the game is treating you as if you're stupid.

When you do get to actually play, it's thrilling at first roaming through Tokyo and exploring the various activities, which are basically mere cut scenes that boost your social stats, but mid way through the game I had already maxed my stats and found myself in a sisyphic cycle passing the in-game time by sleeping, waking up and brewing the occasional coffee for a total of around 70 in-game days, that's a LOT of wasted real life time.

Infiltrating palaces is over simplified and becomes a mundane task after a short while.
The graphics are shamefully outdated and resemble Nintendo 3DS graphics, the animation is minimal and awkward, the characters basically look like lifeless puppets.

The core story and battle system is where the game really shines:
The battle system is intricate and lets you expose and take advantage of enemy weaknesses and is overall very polished.
The core story is amazing despite it being littered by the above mentioned flaws, dealing with very mature themes, it has you take against the evildoers of the world, with climactic twists and epic boss fights
The characters' voice acting is eccentric in a very anime-like way, making the cast of characters very likeable.

Overall Persona 5 Royal is mostly a mediocre and passive experience, if it was cut short leaving only the meat I'd say it's a worthwhile time investment but it certainly doesn't deserve the 130 hours it demands.

the pacing in the game is really bad especially which **** morganna limiting your action in early game, the character that appear here also almost not interesting for me it's just like all of my friends are **** with really bad character development especially morganna and ironically some of minor character in my social link are better than my main party social link even the silent protagonist which designed to not have actual personality is kinda **** now like he confused between supposed to have personality or not at this rate i can even say persona 1 is better in story and character aspect, the story ? **** man boring as **** i just play one route and after that decide to watch youtube about other ending and not have motivation to play NG+.

conclusion is this game indeed by aesthethically aspect (Artstyle, Demon & Character Design, Graphic, Music, and Battle Mechanism) undeniable is The best the best in the franchise.

but story aspect is ****ing big 0.

Most of the new changes are very small outside the new semester, as in you won’t even notice it is not the original most of the time, and the new semester is short (like less than 15-20 hours) and many may require a walk through just so you don’t miss it (seriously, there is even a walk through here on metacritic, that is how I found this site!) because if you don’t meet specificMost of the new changes are very small outside the new semester, as in you won’t even notice it is not the original most of the time, and the new semester is short (like less than 15-20 hours) and many may require a walk through just so you don’t miss it (seriously, there is even a walk through here on metacritic, that is how I found this site!) because if you don’t meet specific requirements that you aren’t told about you bypass the new semester entirely. Take a great game and ruin it with an annoying new girl, gameplay so easy it stops being a game and is more of a button mash, filler cutscenes, and charge as much as you would for a brand new game even though there are expansion packs with more new content.

Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

This is not more of the same, this is not an optional add-on to the original game. This, my friends, is the perfect experience, down to the last letter, down to the last minute. Persona 5 Royal is a Japanese crown jewel.

All of the new additions and content mean that Persona 5 Royal is a clear upgrade to the original. New players should seek this version without hesitation, although vets may find starting the game over from scratch to be too big an ask. Either way, there’s no doubt that Persona 5 Royal sits proudly on the throne of Peak Persona… or at least it will until Atlus decides they can do even more with it.
