Patapon 2 Remastered

The only benefit to playing on PS4 to me is that I can hold the controller in a way that my thumbs are always on the face buttons which was something I couldn’t do on both the PSP and the Vita. So I would skip this unless it is the only way you can play Patapon (and I would suggest the first game because this picks up the story right after the end of that game). Even then I can’t actually say that it will work because of the calibration issues. This was an issue with Parappa the Rapper and again Sony just didn’t put in the work. Patapon 2 is a great game; this remaster is only just okay.

Patapon 2: Remastered is still a game worth trying with its rich content and ambitious structure even though it is behind in a few issues.

Its addictive beat-based combat is satisfying and truly unique, and while it shows its age in some of its systems, it is something that should be experienced by every self-respecting PlayStation fan.

A fun and funky sequel, Patapon 2’s bolstered roster of cheerful eyeball folk make for another welcome trip soundtracked to the beat of Pata Pata Pata Pon. It’s a shame then that the remaster feels incomplete, offering an experience that’s fundamentally less comprehensive than the PSP original.

Patapon 2: Remastered brings the unique rhythm-strategy PSP game to the PlayStation 4 platform, but not without issues. Some scenes weren’t remastered and there is noticeable lag without using headphones. Still, the game retains its unique and challenging gameplay, and fans of the series will have many hours of fun.

Its simplistic graphics lend themselves well to 4K resolution and is a good reminder of how video games, in and of themselves, can be art.

After the experience of playing through the remaster in a binge setting brought to light some foibles that went previously unnoticed, this is still a top quality entry in a series that has gone woefully underappreciated. Hopefully time will change that.

The PSP classic returns to PlayStation 4, but Patapon 2 Remastered only partially convinces.

Patapon 2 Remastered makes it easy to fall in love with those adorable eyeball creatures all over again. It follows in the footsteps of the first game's PS4 revival, and in doing so it repeats all the highs and lows. You'll struggle to find a gameplay experience as unique as this, and it remains an addictive time sink, but somewhat obtuse design and hectic battles can easily throw you off. It has its flaws, but it's an eccentric and charming game that will eventually have you dancing to its rhythm.

Patapon 2 Remastered is really fun, but the gameplay is relatively boring and there are no extra and bonuses compared to the original PSP game.

Patapon 2 Remastered brings back the unique and joyful mesh of Rhythm Games and God Games that made the beloved series stand out back in the PSP days, but the very basic treatment of this remaster and the removal of online functionalities prevent it from being an outstanding revival.

Sorry that a series like Patapon, still unique in the genre of rhythm games, is struggling to find peace between the pixels of its new editions for PlayStation 4. Mind you: Patapon 2 Remastered is a much better transposition than that which has unfairly stained the good name of the eldest Patapon.

Patapon 2 Remastered doesn't introduce anything new to the game, but is still fun to play for fans of the genre. Input lag can unfortunately rear it's ugly head, which can make an already difficult game, nigh impossible on harder difficulties. It's tough to recommend this one for any but the most devout of fans as there are a wealth of better rhythm based games out there right now.

A release like Patapon 2 Remastered wouldn’t make sense anymore, and Sony would have to examine its legacy if it wanted to dive into the past. Just like the Patapon, time is always marching onward, and it’s up to you to stop and smell the flowers.
