Mar 23, 2020Whilst a little tricky at times, Paper Beast is an experience every PSVR owner should play at some point as it is quite simply a one-of-a-kind experience. Pixel Reef and Eric Chahi create a gorgeous ecosystem where animals, plants, natural resources, and the elements all work harmoniously to keep one another alive. All of this is done with incredibly complex and beautiful paper creatures that you will marvel at as they walk on by you in the dry deserts and cold tundras. And, when the simulation you are in is over, you might come away valuing the life on Earth in reality, just a little bit more.

Mar 23, 2020Paper Beast is a jaw-dropping science fiction tale that immerses the player in a unique, visionary world. Though its puzzles can feel abstract at times, the rewards for completing them are great. Paper Beast is a benchmark in VR game design. This is a game that people will be talking about in thirty years.
-
May 1, 2020Paper Beast is an inspired game that makes as good a case as any for the relevance of VR. Don’t be surprised to see it on the year’s best list.
-
Apr 6, 2020Paper Beast is one of the more unique VR games available for the PlayStation 4. Its puzzle mechanics and simple story are effective and fit perfectly with VR. While the game is short, the connections made with the Paper Beast's creature and world will have players thinking about it for days to come. If PlayStation 4 owners have access to a VR headset, Paper Beast is a must play.
-
Mar 30, 2020Paper Beast is a beautiful experience that's only really possible in VR.
-
Mar 23, 2020Paper Beast blew me away. It was not what I was expecting at all and it challenged me, not too much but just enough to get my brain working. Its beautiful, it sounds amazing and its a game like no other on PlayStation VR. If you want to play something a bit different, just go and buy it. It will not be everyone's cup of tea but I can see a lot of people really enjoying it. I did.
-
Apr 13, 2020Eric Chahi’s latest creation is a worthwhile PlayStation VR experience, especially if you like your worlds to be mysterious and interesting to explore. The game never holds your hand, instead leaving it up to you to discover its secrets. The puzzles can feel confusing at first until you get used to the game’s unexplained mechanics, although the simple controls help things along. Even though the story is short, the sandbox mode will keep players coming back to this unique environment until your imagination runs out.
-
Mar 25, 2020A rather short, but tremendously fascinating and relaxed puzzle trip through a world full of bizarre creatures and mechanisms.
-
Jun 10, 2020My time with Paper Beast left me in awe. While I cannot claim to fully understand what it is that I experienced while playing this game, I’m glad that I did experience it. I would encourage others to experience it as well.
-
Edge MagazineMay 22, 2020Captivating and uncanny, Paper Beast is a rare one: a distinctively weird game that'll stick with you long after your brain has filtered out the little hiccups and frustrations. [Issue#346, p.100]
-
Playstation Official Magazine UKApr 20, 2020With a sense of being transported to another world that many games struggle to achieve, this is a beautifully surreal journey. [Issue#175, p.81]
-
Apr 8, 2020Paper Beast is more of an experience than a game. Being done in VR definitely enhances the mood of the game. There is no hand holding. You must figure out what needs to be done in each level based on the environment and the actions of the animals that inhabit said level. This can lead to some frustration, but overall the game does an excellent job of laying the necessary bread crumbs for the player to suss out the solution. Playing Paper Beast is very akin to kicking back, chilling out, and listening to a Pink Floyd album — you are left in a contemplative state of mind.
-
Apr 7, 2020Paper Beast is a peculiar experience that will give VR veterans a reason to go back to Playstation VR.
-
Apr 6, 2020Playing Paper Beast is like experiencing a Tim Burton style fever dream that'll keep you perplexed and intrigued throughout.
-
Apr 2, 2020Paper Beast is a wonderful puzzle game that features a stunning soundtrack, a poignant story, and some tender moments that leave you breathless.
-
Mar 30, 2020Paper Beast is a unique look at a reactive living world. It’s a game that makes you feel like you’re exploring an alien habitat through the lens of an interactive nature documentary. It’s filled with (occasionally obtuse) natural, organic environmental puzzles. A personal and contemplative experience, Paper Beast could only be better if it were narrated by Sir David Attenborough.
-
Mar 24, 2020It’s as much environment as level, alien and weird but also beautiful, and that remains true for every stage and scene from the weird J-pop beginning all the way through the end of Paper Beast‘s deteriorating digital world.
-
Mar 23, 2020An extremely relaxing title, inspired and full of important hidden messages to interpret.
-
Mar 23, 2020With Paper Beast, Eric Chahi goes for a holy trinity of VR development. It is a game not content with just one miracle, be it the authentic, almost documentarian approach to a virtual ecosystem, nor the technical milestones such a feat requires. Even its set of puzzles somehow emerge as a remarkably natural extension of its core themes and systems, creating a cohesive and curiously precious VR game to be preserved and savoured. Though it usually comes with unintended pitfalls, Paper Beast proves playing god can be great from time to time.
-
Mar 23, 2020An exclusive experience like no other, a beautiful statement on the natural world and the influence technology can have on it.
-
Mar 23, 2020A whimsical and engrossing VR puzzle adventure, who’s lack of hand-holding and gentle discoveries prove consistently engaging and relaxing.
-
Mar 23, 2020Paper Beast isn’t perfect; like a dream, the game just ends without warning. But the trip is such a joyous, meditative experience it’s worth this parting burst of confusion. If you’ve got a PSVR, Paper Beast should be high on your to-play list.
-
Mar 23, 2020Paper Beast is weird, very weird, and we think that’s a good thing. This puzzle-based adventure is one of the most unique adventures we’ve played in VR, and we definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something different.
-
Apr 16, 2020Paper Beast is a short and simple puzzle game, but it has a wonderful world, just beautiful, full of creatures to interact with, and it has a very smart and important message about the humans and their relation with nature. Fascinating.
-
Apr 7, 2020Mediocre graphics are Paper Beast's main detractor, which is a shame - especially since, rather paradoxically, the game's unique art style is a major plus. Smooth controls and an enjoyable sandbox mode are other reasons to give this title a chance.
-
Apr 6, 2020Paper Beast is a wondrous game. The paper animals all behave in their own ways, and the setup of this game is both confusing and intuitive. It's just like a dream.
-
Apr 20, 2020Paper Beast is a fascinating migratory tale that highlights the power of collaboration and mutual help. Too bad its distinctive graphic style is brought down by terrible textures and the Sandbox mode is only the shadow of what it could have been.
-
Apr 5, 2020Paper Beast is a VR puzzle adventure with several original mechanics and a great atmosphere, but also some very cumbersome controls.
-
Apr 2, 2020Paper Beast is a strange, experimental game, but part of its charm lies precisely in that.
-
Mar 31, 2020Paper Beast is a separate work in the PlayStation VR catalog. Its strange universe and its endearing beasts are its strengths, as is the beauty of certain panoramas, especially those at night, which undeniably allow the player to escape. Special mention to the sequence of the oil spill which seems to arise from a temporal fault ... The game mechanics partly recall a previous game by Eric Chahi, From Dust , but what a pity that only the travel by teleportation is proposed. Paper Beast is a good game, but with free movement it would be much better.
-
Mar 30, 2020Paper Beast isn't a revolutionary title, but if the idea of a short voyage into an original alien environment sounds like a blast, then this may be well worth your time.
-
Mar 26, 2020Paper Beast allows players to lose themselves inside pastel daydreams of soft shapes and delicate zoology. They could also lose patience with some tedious mechanics and suspicious tests of logic. Paper Beast is full of gratifying ingenuity, beautiful optimism, and elegant communication. And maybe an overabundance of zealous whimsy.
-
Mar 25, 2020Despite its "VR Experience" tag, Paper Beast manages to bring a new wind to the genre by allowing the player a great freedom of action, even if some of the enigmas feel baldy designed.
-
Mar 23, 2020Paper Beast is a memorable VR experience like no other, letting you play god in a world that feels godless. If only its puzzles – sometimes creative, but other times frustrating – didn’t get in its way, it would be an unconditional recommendation for lovers of bizarre escapism.
-
Mar 23, 2020Despite some concerns about precision and sometimes repetitive puzzles, the scenery is there. It's up to you to decide whether you want to embark with Eric Chahi or not.
-
Mar 23, 2020Paper Beast is an unusual but well realised world in PSVR. The interplay between you, the environments, and all the plants and animals is fun to discover, and it really does offer up some great moments throughout the story. Some of the puzzles are a little too obtuse, but overall the freedom you're given to experiment leads to a greatly unique experience. The Sandbox mode adds some longevity, and allows you to really tinker with all the game's elements. We're not sure we'd call this an absolute must-have, but it's utterly unique and captivating in a way only VR games can be.
-
CD-ActionMay 12, 2020Éric Chahi created an experience as intriguing, as sleep-inducing. [06/2020, p.65]
-
Apr 21, 2020Paper Beast is a VR game that takes advantage of the technology's unique possibilities. When we put on the headset, we are transported to a completely different world, filled with beautiful views, a strange wildlife and clever puzzles. Unfortunately, we are also met by some muddy environments, limited controls and a few puzzles that cause more frustration than joy. In the end, Paper Beast is a different and fascinating experience, but the we miss the last bit of polish.
