Yeeearrgh!! That's not the sound of fear from playing this game but the sound of complete frustration in dying for the sixth time and having to start all the way back to some predetermined checkpoint where I'll have to start sneaking in the shadows for another twenty minutes and hope that I go in the right order of rooms and hallways the next time. Don't get me wrong, the game is incredibly scary and consistently tense. It makes Silent Hill look like Luigi's Mansion. It's just that the "save" system seems to be not working. I wonder how this game would be if it did work and I can actually progress at a decent rate. It's a shame that we can't kill our opponents, or at least defend our selves. It takes about four hits before your dead, and with a large number of objects that you need to jump over, your adversary will get all of his four hits on you rather quickly. It's scary as hell, but not fun and too frustrating. Expand

I didn't find this one scary, putting the music louder isn't scary for me... Silent Hill 1-3 is much scarier than this... I can't really see the appeal on this game.

Fresh new idea (sort of). Zero fighting, all running and hiding. It does an amazing job of being "spooky", however I can not agree with a high score on scare factor alone. The real issue is the gameplay. What would perhaps be terrifying to a person who rarely plays games serves little spook to someone who does. What would be scary comes off more frustrating and inconvenient than spooky. Sequences are predictable from surveying rooms prior to activating a flag. Knowing a monster can't find you but won't leave would draw tension to someone who doesn't have a grasp for mechanics but to any familiar player feels more like a loading screen before they can move again. The limited battery life leads you to conserve in safe areas and bumble into furniture for longer than you'd care to while saving battery for the times where it'll actually be needed rather than convenient.

Games free for ps+. If it wasn't I'd strongly recommend against it. If you have plus than it comes down to how much you feel your time is worth.

The character models might look cool at first but, If you look closely at them, you can see the characters have weird faces. Also penises -_-.

It's not that the game is hard, it's an artificial difficulty to extend the playtime. After seeing the same animations 5 times it is no longer shocking or scary. This game is at its best in noncombat scenarios when you are moving the plot forward, and at its worst when you are participating in the "exciting" game play parts. Simply stated: you will have much better scares and gameplay mechanics in amnesia the dark descent, a much better story in amnesia a machine for pigs, and much better gore in dead space 2. Graphics in my opinion aren't the best, not PS4 grade anyway but not too bad. The characters are relevant to the story, complete lunatics! Game-play controls are surprisingly fluid for what seems to be a 'budget' type game.

If you don't put the time in this game will start to frustrate you as it is quite difficult. Mainly due to the fact that as above, you can't fight so if your caught your basically screwed if you cant get away quick and hide. Stealth is definitely the name of the game here.

For me the game reeks of low budget and niche with bog standard graphics which is why my score isn't higher.

Personally if i paid money for it, id be slightly disappointed but seen as I got it free with PSP its a good free game to play once then refuse to play again after being freaked out :)

But I was only scared because of my own anticipation, really. The atmosphere was great: The 'people' that 'weren't home', and my own character's journal entries as I went insane were engaging and interesting, but when it came down to action sequences that should've had me helplessly running away in fear, I actually felt entirely confident in my ability to survive, simply because after the first encounter I knew exactly how to dodge every enemy in the game, and this was the primary drawback; The gameplay was lackluster and repetitive. The story also didn't end in a way that left me satisfied, and didn't offer much closure.

The game does offer quite a few scares in cutscenes and exploration of the asylum, just not in action sequences, which was a disappointment. It was fun while it lasted, though, and even more so with my roommate, as we both crept around the mount massive asylum.

A guard would check the locker next to you instead of randomly (every time). If you pick something up an enemy shows up (also every time). This leads me to always knowing what is going to happen which prevents me from being afraid (it is said that fear is centered around the unknown, after all). Early hours of game set the mood really high, and Outlast actually made me really nervous and twitchy while playing. You play the game from first person view, and main objective is to avoid combat while finding keys and other items to proceed from one area to the next.
As for PS4 features, you can swipe your controller's touch pad to use zoom function of your camera, and when you use nightvision mode, the light of your controller will change color to green. These features may sound fun, but they aren't really that exciting or important.

The repetitive nature of this game may be a big turn off for some players. You will turn few levers to open a new path, see an old enemy, hide, run, and proceed. When you have played the first hours of this game, you have already seen all what Outlast offers.

I bought this game for 9,9€, and for that price, the short ~5 hours campaign didn't bother me. But still it is a shame that game doesn't have that much replay value. You don't obtain any tools to help your journey or encounters with enemies, and there really aren't that many enemy types, they all have the same behaviour. You can't choose any alternative routes when proceeding from one area to next and so on.
Only moment when the gameplay has some variety, it lasts for less than 20 mins.

With more gameplay elements, this could've easily been one of the best horror games ever.

Even if you buy this with the full price of 19,90€, you will probably still have fun with this game.

Okay so the story, I thought it was a generic mess, and I really tried to get into it, I red every single piece of paper but this story was boring and it relies a lot on the shock value and it really outstays it's welcome.
The gameplay is just not interesting, it's so repetitive and bland, I did however liked the idea of the camera, being capable of having night vision was probably the best idea in the entire game.
And like I said it's a walking simuaLtor, you just run and walk, I can enjoy walking simulators (soma, the vanishing of Ethan Carter) but I really have to enjoy the story and I didn't, so it was a chore to me.

People tell me this game is great because it's "scary" and I will admit, the first 30 minutes were scary but that's because I didn't know what to expect (because I knew nothing about this game), but as the game continued and I knew what it was about, all the fear disappeared.
Okay first of all, yes there are jumpscares but at no point I was scared of continuing the game because apart from loud noises, there is nothing scary about this game.
And gore is also not scary to me, it's not because there is blood and organs everywhere that I won't be able to sleep at night, it's just a cheap way to shock players and I found that to be lazy.

So in the end, this game was really a disappointment, I didn't like the story and the characters, the gameplay was boring and repetitive and I just didn't find it to be scary... But I do respect it for inspiring games like alien isolation and re 7 and I also respect it for trying something different, but when I judge it as a game, it just didn't leave the impact I was hoping for...
Sorry, but this game is just not made for me.

As for the cons. I found the game to be unecessarily prolongated. It could have been shortened by 1/3 because it started to get tedious and repetitive. The other major inconvenience is that you have to unfairly die on a regular basis in order to understand which pathway leads to a dead end while you are being chased by a monster. I found myself frustrated at times but kept telling myself that this game is short so I wouldn't wait too long to get rewarded by the payoff of the ending.... MAJOR disappointment. There was nothing at the end. It was poor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For such a prolific and well renowned horror game, I found Outlast to be incredibly boring.

Outlast was such huge success back in 2014, when I saw it on sale for next to nothing just recently I figured I'd get into a game I'd never really given much thought to before, I knew I wasn't going to love this game as much as many because I don't love the stealth horror genre as much as many, but I figured it would give me a good scare at least... It did not. I found Outlasts attempts at horror to fall flat one after another, when the scares aren't blatantly choreographed they're just bland jump scares. Unlike the Spencer Mansion of Resident Evil, the Ishimura of Dead Space or the even the Maw of Little Nightmares, I just don't find the Asylum scary, maybe I'm just jaded but when going from A to B I was just bored, this was with playing the game in the dead of night with headphones on with all my lights off, I got nothing out of it, and if this game fails to scare you, it doesn't offer much else in the way of entertainment.

I found the story to be incredibly boring, an evil corporation doing evil things to people under the guise of a helpful corporation? Yes Red Barrels, I like The Umbrella Corporation from Resident Evil too. Where Murkoff and Umbrella differ however is that Umbrella are actually interesting. The story also ends anticlimactically too, something The Whistleblower dlc had to fix, and it makes the dlc all the better for it too. Unlike Amnesia which tells its story in a very similar way with notes and diary entries giving background to a horrible and messed up place, I never felt compelled to read and learn more, I don't particularly care about what happened because I can piece it together in my mind anyway. "evil people did some evil things and got over zealous leading to their deaths and the current state of the asylum" and that's pretty much right. Miles thoughts, while occasionally funny, never intrigued me like Daniels, I never wanted hated any of the antagonists like I did Alexander, and I never had to step back in shock and conflict like I did when Daniels identity is revealed. My point is, while Outlast clearly takes inspiration from Amnesia, the story it tells is much more shallow and uninteresting, with a shallow and uninteresting main character who meets a fittingly shallow and uninteresting end.

As for other characters, The Wallrider is certainly interesting, as is a couple of the inmates, mainly Trager and The Groom from the DLC, but unfortunately we're stuck with Chris Walker, a man who says almost nothing, does nothing majorly interesting, and despite being fatter than me, which is an accomplishment, gets around faster than Sonic on speed, it's kind of aggravating honestly, how does he get around so quickly? especially through spaces that Miles has to squeeze through? It's absurd and despite The Wallrider existing, is what breaks my immersion harder than anything else. As for the characters I DO like, Trager is fun, the way he taunts you when he's taken you captive, asking you if you'd like to go outside, knowing that's your only goal as he cruelly takes you deeper into the Asylum, it's great and I love it, unfortunately he is cut short, both metaphorically and literally, he gets killed by a rising elevator and it's a real shame, because it means we're stuck with Chris until The Wallrider who we only come face to face with at the tail end of the game. I'm of two minds when it comes to The Brothers, I think they're contempt for Miles is funny and their seeming benevolence is interesting, but when they express desire to kill him, I can't understand why they don't, especially in certain scenes where it would be very easy to do so, but overall I do like them. Finally is The Groom from the DLC, he's a slightly more screwed up Trager, but his sections are bone chilling, his morbid infatuation with Waylon is genuinely scary, and his final scene is great, it's a shame he was resigned to a dlc and not the main game.

Overall, I just don't like Outlast, I didn't find it scary, the story fell flat for me, and all the characters I actually liked were sidelined in favour of those I didn't. I respect the game as a horror indie title that made it big and I think Red Barrels far refined their games with Outlast 2 and I hope to see more of these series with a possible Outlast 3, this game however, is one I can't see myself ever coming back to.

It’s not perfect, but Outlast still succeeds at scaring the pants off you. [April 2014, p80]

A great example of the new wave of indie horror, Outlast isn't revolutionary or particularly terrifying, but some great jump scares and a fun, cheesy story make it well worth checking out. [Issue#241, p.72]

Outlast is a virtual tour through a hall of terrors. Even playing the game in full daylight makes me uneasy. However, the game's overall level design and gameplay were sacrificed at the altar of fear. If you're looking for an experience that will get your adrenaline pumping, Outlast is hard to beat, but if you’re looking for a meatier horror experience then you might want to run past this one.
