Apr 3, 2020Classic dungeon crawling á la The Bard’s Tale with fairy tale’ish visuals and intelligent puzzles.

Jul 20, 2020Overall, despite some of my criticisms on the game's presentation, I do think Operencia was a fun experience. The main plot was fairly unengaging, but I enjoyed seeing the character interactions and came to know them as the game went on. While some of the exploring and puzzles got frustrating at times, there were other times when I did not want to turn the game off before fully exploring a floor or clearing an area. The game was not particularly difficult or long, around 20 hours of playtime, but there is definitely potential replay value with the difficulty settings (including permadeath and map-less options) and protagonist creation. Operencia can be inconsistent in presentation and difficulty, but I would lightly recommend it to anyone looking for a traditional RPG experience with emphasis on exploration.

Mar 28, 2020Operencia: The Stolen Sun is a user friendly but still challenging first person, dungeon crawling RPG. The voice acting isn't the strongest and the puzzles might have you scratching your head but the overall experience is an enjoyable, slightly shorter, adventure.

Mar 31, 2020Where the game really shines is in its entertaining writing and story-telling. While there are plenty of dark and sombre story points, your lovable companions will constantly lift the mood with light-hearted banter or their tales of folklore told around the warmth of a campfire.

Apr 17, 2020If Operencia: The Stolen Sun was really a 28-years old game, I probably wouldn’t bother with it anymore. As much as I love old games, sometimes modern comforts are just nice to have. Operencia plays with old-school expectations but turns them into a meaningful experience where a modest budget is mostly turned into the game’s favor. Some further playtesting would have perhaps solved sudden difficulty spikes more efficiently than constantly loading a save until you succeed. However, if you are interested in dungeon crawlers in the first place, you are probably prepared to take in some extra punches along the way.

Apr 2, 2020There is so much potential for Operencia. Zen Studios has crafted a gorgeous, elegant dungeon crawler, with rich lore, interesting characters, and the team has demonstrated real talent with dungeon design - something that is by no means easy. Cleaning up the combat system so that it's not so exhausting and frustrating is all it would take for Operencia to be a top-tier example of the genre.
