The similarities to Dark Souls are immediate from the outset with the player having to kill enemies to collect amrati (souls) in order to level up, dying results in restarting from the last shrine (bonfire) whereby you’ll have one chance to collect the amrati before it is lost. It’s also a difficult game, and death can come quickly even at the hands of standard enemies should you make a mistake.

The combat itself is, if anything, actually an improvement on Dark Souls with various stances, weapons and attacks to choose from. What Nioh doesn’t have however is Dark Souls labyrinth like worlds that make exploration enjoyable even when you’re many hours in. Instead Nioh plays almost like a loot based dungeon crawler with players selecting from various 30-60 minutes missions that often reward you with an overwhelming number of new items on top of the amrati for levelling up. With so few enemy types, and many missions playing out in very similar fashion this does all start to become repetitive after a while, and with a run time of at least 70 hours it simply goes on way too long.

Now, this is in large part because of my refusal to go through all of the intricacies of menus, items, and skills that you have in your arsenal. I beat the majority of the game solely with combat and struggled despite having strong weapons, armor, and levels. The three tough bosses (Hino-Enma, Yuki-Onna, and Shima Sakon) seemed to go against everything the game teaches the player about combat - though, later, when I actually learned about talismans, like the Sloth talismans, later game bosses that initially gave me similar levels of frustration became jokes. I guess it's on me for not taking the time to read through all the explanations and navigate the dense menu branches, but I'd rather games teach me as I play rather than stop everything to spell it out for me. Dark Souls was great, Bloodborne was better and this is the best! If you liked DS's you will LOVE this game. There is not even slight thing you can say against this game. Graphics is not best out there, but satisfying with best gameplay you can imagine!

At the beginning I was thinking it was quite a "normal" game but once you see the level design and the huge variety of skills I felt in love. The only things that they should focus on Nioh2 are improving the story and reducing the number of objects.

It's not Dark Souls, but it's the best soulslike game on the market together with Nioh 2.
It took me a lot of time to get hooked to it, the first 3 times I tried I left it there.
But once I got hooked, it's very fun and rewarding.

Most boss fights are basically doable in a few tries at least if you have levels and gear set right but some are just utterly stupid. You can many of them easier by using magic and ninjutsu skills but seriously, games that have so small dodge/block/parry windows that display lag can f up your experience are just not good for me. And character development is just putting points in obvious places and gathering obvious gear to mach.
BUT this and nioh 2 has its own audience so I'd encourage you to try and see for yourself if it's for you. If you like Bloodborne, Darksouls and such you might like this also. I just refuse to give good review to what's mediocre stuff to me.

The combat is smooth and rewarding, the loot/grind works well when you understand it.

A Dark Soul game type with a twist. Everything that the Souls series lack Nioh makes up for it. Game mechanics feel tighter, graphics are amazing, and the bosses are memorable. Only flaw I see is that they should of let players play the whole campaign with other players not just summons. Great game for a filler.

For fans of Soulsborne like myself, this is a very fun game. The combat mechanics are solid and fluid, and in my opinion more resembles the speed and challenge of Bloodborne. The variety of weapons (including ranged attack options), crafting, magic-like abilities, and ability to mix blocking with dodging more resembles the Souls series.

For the negatives, I have three: (1) The story and lore seems like an afterthought. I'm about halfway through the game and I can't really figure out what is going on or how it connects to any of the missions or locations in the game. Given the Soulsborne influence, I would expect to uncover lore as the game progresses, but I am struggling to make any sense of it. (2) The various areas of the game are also not at all connected to one another. At the end of each mission you return to a starting point map where you can select your next mission. Mechanically it's not necessarily a bad thing, but it really segments the game and makes you feel like you're not immersed in a world at all. (3) The amount of loot and crafting is a bit obnoxious in my opinion. Personally, I prefer the limited number of weapons and gear from Bloodborne, but I respect the Souls approach where different types of gear suit different playing styles. I don't want to spend a big chunk of my time, effort, and resources on trying to craft a niche weapon or piece of armor, I just want to play the game. For some people, the ocean of loot and crafting options may be attractive, but for me it just takes away from the game itself.

Overall, I really like this game. But in my mind, Bloodborne is a perfect 10 and a masterpiece, and the Souls games are close behind. I would put Nioh on the same playing field thanks to great mechanics and gameplay, but it doesn't achieve the same level of cohesiveness and entertainment. I give it an 8/10 accordingly, although it is a very impressive game and one that is sure to be one of the best of 2017.

From the graphic point of view will not shine purely technical level, but the Japan brought by the development team is something beautiful that already for a few years I wanted to see in a video game.

I enjoyed it a lot and I hope to see a sequel that can raise even more, perhaps with a storyline more interesting and excellent work with Nioh.

Enemy and location variety is poor, some of the levels are recycled 3 or 4 times! Most bosses are too easy due to the fact that they don't have phases, just one or two new moves at certain point. Story is laughable and characters are forgettable and there are too many of them to even care who they are. Also they are not properly introduced and explained (those cutscenes/intros are terrible!). Some bosses look nice though. I wish they cut some of the useless mechanics like the loot system, onmyo and ninjutsu stuff, blacksmith, and some story bits, and just polished and improved more important parts of the game, like level design, enemy variety and bosses.
