Without any kind of tutorial or proper introduction other than a cutscene explaining the scenario and the plot, the game began and I had literally no idea what to do. After way too long I realized things probably already went haywire and I had missed something, so I closed it.

After googling I learned that at no point does it ever tell you how to play the game. Yet even after learning, I made a genuine attempt to finish the game, and still, I'd keep failing. It got so frustrating I had to quit.

The article admits that if you want to beat the game, you probably not only have to google the controls, but also what to do and when to do it. It is seemingly too difficult to play without a playthrough guide popped up on your second screen...

The score isn't any lower because of the game's originality. It is a unique idea, an entertaining one if it had been approached correctly. The actors are great, the plot is decent, and there is a lot of quality stuff to watch and fun to be had by playing this game.

I am really upset that I have to give a low score to this game, but let me explain why in 2 parts.

First: The cinematic experience. The footage is amazing, and although it is a B-movie, I still loved the characters and fell in love with the plot. This game actually brought me to tears (no joke). Second: This is the reason my score is so low. The gameplay. You do not get to experience

Second: This is the reason my score is so low. The gameplay. You do not get to experience any of the plot. It is all a distraction. Every half second, you have to swap screens and trap an Augur. This really hurts the game, and they should release the footage as a movie. I wish that I could give a higher score. but what you see is not anything special, because all of that is on the screens you shouldn't be looking at.

If nothing else, Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition understands that it’s more of an oddity than a classic. A set of bonus materials offer insight into how the game happened and what the public reaction was to it at the time. It’s probably more interesting than playing, which is just as fundamentally ill-planned now as it was back in 1992. Without any changes made to improve the experience, Night Trap is more of a nostalgic conversation piece than an experience capable of entertaining and engaging players.

If developer Screaming Villains had gone back and reworked parts of the original game – perhaps adding rewind or “no fail” features – then at least Night Trap would be playable. By today’s standards, however, it’s a broken, incoherent mess. A relic that, despite being deeply nostalgic, is almost impossible to stomach for those who aren’t already zealous fans of the original. Still, for all its flaws, it’s a unique piece of video game history and one enthusiasts should definitely look into, even if they don’t actually play Night Trap for themselves.

Overall the game can still be completed rather quickly, and the experience is definitely shallow as far as depth goes, but it’s charming and a great piece of videogame history. Now that I’ve played it to completion, I will say I think Double Switch, another game in the same genre, is a much more elaborate version of this type of game and still my favorite. Night Trap seemed like a great first attempt at a retail title such as this, and I’m glad to see it make a return to the gaming scene all these years later.
