    This game look amazing, one of the best looking game i ever played. The battle system is really fun, i couldn't get into the first game because of that and this one i really liked it. The soundtrack of the game is fantastic. I really had a lot of of fun with this game, after finishing the game i played the post game content because i couldn't get enough of this game.     I think i'm in love.
    This might be one of the best JRPG's I have ever played, Wonderful characters, a lot of Studio Ghibli influences, In case you were scared for the cut scenes not being drawn and directed by Ghibli, let me tell you, they are still super Ghibliish, and very good.
    Extremely colorful and diverse world, monsters, characters. Every inch of this game is filled with charm and    I think i'm in love.

    this game is amazing ever i playing and graphic is so beautiful.. combat is incredible in real time battle.. Evan look funny with 2 cat's ears.. Roland is so cool characters. i am very enjoying it in every minutes

    I think it's a charmful story with easy but solid gameplay, a lot of imagination and cute characters, I was a bit confused with the short video scenes a the lack of voice acting but I finish enjoying it, I remembered the likes of Persona 5 in that scene.

    I loved Ni No Kuni 1 and was even more surprised, that Ni No Kuni 2 was able to reach, if not even surpass, my expectations. An Amazing piece of gaming, which every JRPG fan should play!

    There is too much to say about this game that makes it great. The bright and colorful world and cast of characters. The battles feel great and responsive. I love the Tactics Tweaker and managing the kingdom to make sure it is coming along the way I want it. I want to go into greater detail but then this review might become way too long. If you have or plan on buying a PS4 this is a must buy.

    Just beat the game. Such a heartwarming adventure with many fun aspects. This game is a worthy successor to the first game. I still believe the first one was better but not by much imo. Evan and Roland are my boys! The new fighting mechanics is fun and the kingdom building is interesting at times. The visuals are amazing in 4K HDR. The story is great! This game really does feel like aJust beat the game. Such a heartwarming adventure with many fun aspects. This game is a worthy successor to the first game.     Fetch quests? I've only encountered a few of those in side quests.
    Too much text? Ya'll never heard of jrpgs have you?

    TO start, ignore those **** who say this game is too childish and immature. Not everything needs to be gritty and mature just to be good. I didn't pick up NI No Kuni II until the difficulty setting was added, when I started playing it I knew I wouldn't want to stop. I'm currently at 60 something hours and I've been trying to reach level 4 on my kingdom. I'm currently at level 3. NNK2 is aTO start, ignore those **** who say this game is too childish and immature. I'm currently at 60 something hours and I've been trying to reach level 4 on my kingdom. I'm currently at level 3. NNK2 is a delightfully charming game and for a series newcomer, I love it. I've spent more time doing sidequests and trying to build my kingdom. I can't think of any other game that had me more interested in doing sidequests than the main story, the main story is good itself, but my focus is on the kingdom right now.

    The game isn't without its cons however. You may find some fights slightly difficult and being limited to a select amount of healing items during a fight can be a pain if you encountered a foe that's too strong. Some of the skirmishes are way above the level of your army so you'll have to repeat a few skirmishes and do some sidequests to level up, thankfully, the skirmishes are optional and the sidequests aren't drags.

    I can't think of anything that makes me hate this game. I'm surprised I liked it as much as I do considering how I was getting tired of action RPGs and there not being enough turn based games. Nonetheless this game is charming and delightful, it's nice to play a game that's not so serious all the time. I reccomend buying this game, I just might get a subscription to PlayStation Now and play the first one. Charming game!    … Expand

    What a beautiful game! I loved the first Ni No Kuni and they captured the same atmosphere in this game. The gameplay is great: fluent battles and perfect controls. The game looks absolutely stunning and the surroundings are varied. A musthave for fans of the genre and if you've played and loved the first game, you should definitely play this one.

    Muy buen juego, muy buenos gráficos de lo mejorcito que he visto en estilo anime, buen sistema de combate, buen diseño de personajes, la historia no es la rebomba pero tampoco es mala como mucha gente dice, hay decenas de jrpg con peor historia que este juego, buena banda sonora. Lo único que malo de este juego es la dificultad es demasiado fácil, jueguenlo en modo difícil.

    A modern masterpiece of storytelling that can transport you into a magical mystical world. Level-5 has brought it's years of honing their craft to bear with Ni No Kuni II and it shines! At a dynamic 4k w/ HDR on the Pro it's jaw dropping but it's so much more than that. Loose yourself in this modern masterpiece you will not be disappointed.

    Ni No Kuni 2 is a breath taking and pleasant sequel to the first game. The art style is so colorful and the game play is fun even though some people disliked the changes from the first. This is one of those games where you can play 3 hours straight and still want to keep going just for the next surprise that is waiting for you.     I love the first game, and somehow, the sequel is even better. The art-style and graphics are beautiful. The music is moving. Gameplay is perfect and improved from the first game. Love all the cute little creatures and looting is great! Halfway through and am slow-playing it, because I don't want it to end.

    One of the best JRPG of this gen. Fun and fast combat gameplay. Bring some memories from another Level-5 classic, Rogue Galaxy. Story and characters are light hearted and grounded to the world around them. Art style is beautifully complimented by graphics and a nice HDR.

    Uno de los mejores RPG de PS4, una autentica maravilla. El mundo que ha construido Level-5 es increible, fomenta mucho las exploración. Graficamente se ve espectacular, lo mejor que puedes encontrar con esta estetica grafica hoy en dia en el mundo de los videojuegos. La música otra maravilla del juego, muy buena banda sonora. Absolutamente un must have de PS4, sobre todo si eres fan de los RPG.

    It was difficult to get a better game than the first Ni No Kuni, but Ni No Kuni 2 is a great game with an amazing story which helps us to evade from this world. Adorable characters in an amazing world where there are loads of things to do in order to create a kingdom from scratch! Great game!

    Ni no Kuni II was a amazing experience to me, with an incredible lore, beautiful animation and a incredible soundtrack. I've spent almost 200 hours doing all the content of the game, and never became boring doing the sidequests and other tasks (which is rare in nowadays RPGs). Worth every single penny to buy it and get the platinum trophy.

    Lengthy deep story, very fantasy and probably a bit too childish but it succeeds at telling a true, meaninful story with characters you care about with a fun gameolay system I wish other JRPGs would adopt. For all Zelda fans who dont have a Nintendo, this is    Masterpiece, its just an amazing game for everyone. They tend to be on the pricey side but if you get a promotion, its a must buy.

It features a world map reminiscent of older RPGs and the same more optimistic tone. Characters: 9.5/10 The main party is all interesting.     Characters: 9.5/10 The main party is all interesting. You get to control a party from a variety of races of the world and one party is a transplant from Earth. Roland, the transplant from earth, is equally as interesting as the main character (Evan) which provides depth to the party. You also are able to recruit a multitude of side characters and while they can't join the party (like in Suikoden) main cain aid in larger war efforts and many have side quests that feature their personalities well.

    Graphics/art: 9.5/10. With Studio Ghibli giving support what can go wrong? Not much. The only thing that is lacking is that it would have been great to have some Studio Ghibli 2D cutscenes instead of the sort of screen shot Studio-Ghilbli0image-with-dialouge that we get some times

    Story: 8/10. The story is very optimistic and reminiscent of a classic JRPG. That being said it was almost too easy to get side tracked by side quests and things could have been harder for the main character in chapters other than chapter one to give it more meat (while still retaining the game's T rating).

    Gameplay: 8.5/10: Fun, Somewhat strategic. At least strategic enough to not be button mashing. Gathering side quests could get a bit repetitive however.

    Extras/Side quests: 10/10: With over 100 citizens to recruit and a multitude of gathering and fighting side quests you can't be bored. Finally a game has come along with some great kingdom building to fill the void that the Suikoden Series has left! The kingdom building was honestly my favorite part of the game. That being said it in no way diminished from the overall story, but I would recommend doing side quests throughout instead of procrastinating them because then it could distract from the story.

    Overall: 9/10: Very, very good game. Fun to play with a lot of fun characters. The story could use a bit more meat but the multitude of personalities and kingdom building more than make up for it.    … Expand

    I really wish I knew more about these characters and serve more of a greater purpose than just being there once their arc is finished
    (Would love more interactions and bond with the crew kinda like in Tales games or any other JRPGS)

    Also wish they utilize more of the battle system; its fun but too short except for when you fight some of the harder tainted monsters and giant beasts in the over world.

    The voice acting and music were amazing but I wish there was a bit more!
    Would love a bit more interesting and variety in the side quests! There's so many in this game :O
    Really love the higgledies and some of the ones late game are so fun to use

    I loved the skirmishes too!
    It's a fun mini game and I love the different units you get to play around with; some of them gets pretty intense
    There are some issues with it though like the text boxes are a bit too small to read and some of the units get stuck at a bridge to the next area

    Mainly what I love about this game is Kingdom Building!
    It's really satisfying to watch Evermore grows as you keep recruiting more citizens and I love interacting with them

    Another thing I really like are the kingdoms you get to go; the music and design behind it are amazing. I love exploring these kingdoms!

    Overall I'm giving it a 8.5!
    There are problems with Ni no Kuni 2 but the art style and the whole feeling of building a kingdom is amazing
    It is a very solid JRPG filled with many content and hours
    Definitely recommend it to those who want to get into JRPGS
    I'm left satisfied and hoping the DLC Story will focus on the lost kingdom and sort of epilogue for Evan!    … Expand

When so-called 'optional' activities are not technically optional, not only does the pacing of the story truly suffer, but it almost feelsNi No Kuni II is a large, charming and mostly fun RPG full of memorable characters and various gameplay styles. However, I felt slightly cheated when I was forced to grind through a huge number of side quests and tasks in order to progress to the end. When so-called 'optional' activities are not technically optional, not only does the pacing of the story truly suffer, but it almost feels like the game has misled the player somewhat.     Ok - so I just cleared it after 50hrs on Chapter 9. I can tell you this game is great but not a masterpiece like the first one. Its an amazing game but has some things that could be have been done better. Overall, I give it 9/10 any anyone giving this less than 8 isn't really being honest since.. the Music, Gameplay and Graphics are definitely high.

Overall, I give it 9/10 any anyone giving this less than 8 isn't really being honest since.. the Music, Gameplay and Graphics are definitely high.

    I have played the first one - Ni No Kuni and so I had very high expectations. I would say this game has a different tone and game-play than the original, but none the less, just as charming. You don’t need to play the first Ni No Kuni to really enjoy the 2nd one, completely two different worlds, story and gameplay. Overall, I would give this a 9/10 so far and here is how I broke it down.

    Graphics- 10 absolutely the best! Its basically JRPG anime game! It virtually looks like you are playing an ANIME game. The hand drawn characters, background and settings are very impressive. They did a fantastic job and thought the cut scenes were amazing.

    Sound- 9.5. The music chords and instruments are spectacular and very easy to listen to. You can tell that real instruments are being played and it works harmoniously with the story and combat. A few criticisms about the Song are lack of variety being played during certain battle sequences and cut-scenes. I wished final boss songs were different than the regular . I also felt more dubs were needed in the story. They left way too much voice acting out of the story telling. I think it had to be because of budget?

    Story- 9.0- while the story started off very slow compared the first Ni No Kuni this was picks up after chapter 6.. And the final chapter 9 actually has some good spots.. But it just didn't have the charm or story telling that Studio Ghibli had in the original! I felt this wasn’t as emotional, or as impressive as the first one, but still very good! The character development is not as strong and I am not too sure if I have a connection with King Evan as the main protagonist. While the other characters are interesting I wished we had a more of backstory to them as well so we can feel like we are a team rather than randomly adding new characters to the roster.

    Gameplay- 9! Here is where I can tell they (Bandai) spent a lot of time in. I am really enjoying the various gameplays- building my kingdom- Sim City, which has a direct impact on my weapons, magic and everything! Also, the fun Army’s Battles was a great addition as well. The only thing I don't care about are the invisible walls when going into battle fights. The invisible walls are distracting and made some fights a bit difficult since my character can get stuck. Basically, I think they took TALES games and incorporated the battle mechanics in this since they are owned by same company -Bandai. Pe

    -Critics and other gamers are saying the game isn’t challenging enough? I sort of agree in some aspects, but I disagree if they are fighting against enemies 20+ levels higher than your characters aren't fast traveling back to get healed up. If you really want to make it challenging you can! Don't have any armor, don't use potions, don't use any special attacks.. You can make it like Dark Souls if you really wanted too - but 90% of players are just saying its too easy because that's basically the only critique they have.

    Overall- 9.0/10! This is definitely an amazing game and disregard anything lower than 8 on this. With the amazing graphics, sounds and gameplay, it has me hooked and played over 50hrs within 3days. I am looking forward to the expansion that will come later on and I will continue my review once I finished it but so far so good. And the only real criticism I have is the story, not enough voice in story, and character development is a tad weak and not as strong as the first original Ni No Kuni. But that's because Studio Ghibli was not involved. But overall it's still a very solid game and would recommend players to try!    … Expand

    In fact, for the first time in a while, I am actually having as much fun with this game as I first had with both Witcher 3 and FFVII when I played them in their own time... that, despite the fact that this game is not geared towards the same audience - those two other games are not necessarily for children... as we well know. This one, however, is.

    The most important factor, I think, which truly amazed me was how important all the characters are. I had become disappointed with character heavy JRPGs as of late, especially when you could easily tell stuff like, "Oh... that one with the boob physics is only there for that," or, "The dude with the creepy personality, licking his knives and sh*t, is only there for that." Basically, characters that don't need to be in the game.

    And then there's this game. The game that was allowed time to be developed because the first one sort of failed. The game that will probably make the first one a "hidden gem" and "collectible classic" now, and will skyrocket the price of an unopened copy upwards of $150 in a few years. The game that shows us, the same way Witcher 3 and Zelda BotW showed us... that when you have time to make a game and don't rush it, all the planned elements CAN be there. The game that, thankfully, will only disappoint people who don't like JRPGs. Which is exactly how it should be for all major releases.    … Expand

The Higgledies, sort of like Pikmin, are a helpful source of offense and defense. The long-range weapons are really effective, unlike a lot of RPGS where they're mostly useful just for flying enemies and don't do as much damage as short-range.

    I found this game to be very easy. Though to be fair, I did play this on easy mode. Yeah, the last game wasn't that difficult, but the last boss battle and one other were pretty challenging. Here, the last boss is a piece of cake provided you've leveled up to the 60s. Admittedly, the easiness is reliant on you exploring and actually leveling up. Otherwise, the enemies could present a challenge. There are a fewer harder monster you may have to revisit and I know there is a level 90 optional boss for completionists. The dream door paths do offer a little challenge.

    In fairness to the difficulty, this is more of a kids game. It only has a T because the game has some elements that are okay for Japanese children but not Americans.

    This sequel has two new features: 1) You build your own kingdom similar to SimCity or Dark Cloud. This is a fun feature that is a little addictive. Only downside is that the game could've explained the various features of this a little more as I didn't even realize that certain game features needed to be unlocked through this. 2) You command your own army and launch battles against your enemies at certain parts. This was my least favorite aspect of the game. The fighting takes too long and is a little clunky.

    Ni No Kuni II should be commended for the vast quests you perform for people. They keep your missions pretty varied so completing them doesn't feel like a drag.

    I am disappointed that Studio Ghibli isn't doing the design this time around. You don't get the exact same type of detail or creativity. That isn't to knock this game. It does look gorgeous, and since the world is more physically explorable this time around, I understand how the look had to be slightly less complex. The world map is far more expansive than the last one and I really digged it.

    Joe Hisaishi returns as the composer, and it's another pretty good score, though it does repeat a few pieces from the last one.

    The story is a little inventive. You play a young king who seeks to create a new kingdom that will unite everyone. (Though if you're really anti-socialism this probably won't be for you.) You're assisted by a president from our reality who's been given younger form, which is different. The ending is definitively more satisfying than the first game.

    I had pure, innocent fun playing this and highly recommend it.    … Expand

    I have picked this game as my enter to JRPG. And it was not bad choice at all. Very complex game with RPG core along with simple RTS battles and quite complex building of kingdom. Not very hard. Nice visual, great music And very addictive gameplay. It will catch you and not let go until you Wil finished it

The downsides is that the connections and personalities of playable characters are not "shaped" enough. The game is very easy, one simple fix for me is halving the damage of the characters and reducing the damage of enemies byFlawless in graphics!     I really enjoy the kingbuilding part, but as some ppl have written, its a bit tedious and have spend a good 3-4 hours just letting the game roll without playing to accumulate funds. I think they also made the builder a bit bloated, they could have easily streamlined it.

Lovely animation, fun and addictive gameplay and wonderful score strongly make up for the lack of difficulty as well as lack of abundant voice acting.     NI no kuni 2 is a really good game that I love almost the whole way through. What makes the main story so good is the characters they are really good and memorable. There were a few moments that I felt were not needed. They tried to build tension, but they gave away the twist which ruined it. There was a twist in the end that I thought was pretty good and took me by siprise.

    The combat in ni no kuni is super good and I enjoyed it a lot and never got tired of it. The tainted monster were tough but were a joy to fight each one of them was tough unless I overl eved it by a lot. The dungeons were well made and really fun to fight through. The dream were fun and a good distraction from the main game.

    I loved the side quests in this game they were fun. Insted of them being something you can do on the side they are mandatory. They were enjoyable and did not become repetitive.

    This was what I thought this part was the weaker part of the game. The kingdom building is fun and enjoyable and satisfying to watch your kingdom grow and get stronger. The skirmishes in my opinion were fun but gets really boring after a while.

    Action JRPG muy entretenido y visualmete muy bonito. La música del maestro Joe Hisaishi es estupenda como no podría ser de otro modo. Lo peor es que durante mucho tiempo el juego tiene una dificultad muy baja y echo en falta un selector de dificultad. El sistema de combate me ha gustado mucho.

    The story behind this game is incredible. My only complaint is that I wish there were more narrated scenes instead of subtitled dialogue with sound effects. I want to find more games like this which feature first/third(/I'll even take second) person battles but also managing a kingdom.

    A really good, game, beautiful music as Joe Hisaishi used to give for the licence. Nice story, not that complex but enjoyable, the gameplay is really smooth. Really good game, I recommend it.

    First thing first, the game is supposedly set in another world,    Ni no Kuni 2 was a pleasant surprise, to say the least: I hated the first game because the combat was a mess, the characters were meh and overall the only thing that saved the original game was the exploration and the fact you had a huge world to explore...and the sequel does pretty much the same too. To a certain extent.

    First thing first, the game is supposedly set in another world, possibly the same as the first but due to the only reference being Ding Dong Dell it's hard to tell if it's actually the same world: I assume it's the future since there's a reference to an "ancestor" in the game but there's no real hint about that at all.

    The "another world" gist is important since it's "kind" of the main theme of the two games (Ni No Kuni means "second country"), including stuff like soul mates which are a thing of the previous game but is very barebone present here.

    In fact, many things in this game are barebone: the story is about Roland, a president of an unnamed country (most likely USA) who gets transported into another world and meets Evan who's the actual main protagonist since Roland is more like an excuse for the "another world" theme. The plot starts off pretty interesting but falls flat after a couple of hours due to the premise: Evan wants to build a kingdom where there's no war and the first chapters are all about signing an alliance treaty while chasing the obvious final boss complete with dark aura and snake-like costume.

    Problem with the plot is simple: it's poorly told and the more you play the more you notice a severe lack of character development or arcs and it's a shame because the potential was there.
    On the other hand the ending was pretty nice, had a very good twist and the lack of details and hints worked. For the rest it feels rushed to say the least.

    Let's move to the combat, which is actually better than the first game.
    No more action/turn-based hybrids mumbo jumbo that didn't know what it wanted to be but instead legit action combat with dodging, heavy and light attacks and skills to use at full charge: this all sounds great if it wasn't for two major issues that make the combat really bad:

    1) Animation lock. Each time you use a skill or magic your character will be locked in animation for several seconds and this makes you an easy target AND interrupt your skill midway, resulting in losing both mana and charge.
    On top of that enemies have the tendency to aim straight at the player and ignore the other two, resulting in many one-sided battles against them.
    This leads to my other issue which is...

    2) Unbalanced difficulty. The game has 3 difficulties: normal hard and expert, but unless you're a masochist you'll always go for either hard or normal because in expert you can be one shot fairly easy - and since enemies will ALWAYS ignore the other two team members this means you'll always have to kite them. However normal is far too easy but gives the less loot so it's really not worth it which means you'll want to stick with hard most of the time because you get more loot and the fights are more challenging - even though one-shots can still happen.

    However, despite these two major issues of the game it's hard to ignore the best part of the whole package: it's a huge world and filled to the brim with content to do! Sidequests, skirmishes, kingdom simulator, crafting, gathering...there's so much stuff is amazing! The world is also fully explorable and with many dungeons to unlock and secret enemies to beat, they are definitely the best components of the game.

    For starters the kingdom is easy to manage and recruiting all 100 citizens takes a while and involves doing all sorts of activities and requests: each citizen is qualified for something more than the rest so make sure to use them properly to get the benefits out of them. The kingdom also unlocks perks which are very useful for postgame content and it's highly recommended to focus on unlocking everything available as soon as you can.

    Skirmishes are 100% okay but they're not too thrilling. Just make sure to have a skirmishing party around 25-30 for the final chapter of the game.

    Questing is very easy due to a tracker that works wonders and in case you need to find an item the game will tell you where to go and get it! However many quests are all about fetching so be ready for it.

    Crafting is actually not bad for both weapons and armor, as well as higgledies - basically combat helpers - and with the right combination, they can be devastatingly good.

    And overall plenty of challenges which requires a lot of time - for leveling up - and gear to achieve.

    Do I recommend it? Yes of course!

    it's a fun little game with plenty of content to do but ruined by a poorly told story with no character development and missing plot arcs and combat that is not smooth or balanced enough.

    I'm not big JRPG fan but I played this game till the end, it was that good to me. Didn't play first game so can't compare them, but this is a solid game on its own. 7,5/10 but I'll give it 8 because it surprised me and made me play one whole JRPG from start till end

    Ni No Kuni WotWW had a much better story and characters. It’s hard not to miss Mr Drippy while playing RK, the game feels like it’s lost some of the magic that made the original so great.
    The original story was much more intriguing and kept me wanting to play to discover more. It was also complemented by the beautiful Studio Ghibli anime cut scenes. The animation style is what really set the game apart from other JRPGs at the time and made it a truly spectacular game. It’s a shame they are missing from RK.
    Combat was better in the original game, mixing classic turn based combat with a more modern action style of combat worked beautifully and added a deeper layer of tactics.
    The lack of Familiars has also really affected the game. With over 400 different creatures to collect and level up in the first game it feels like a big part of the game is missing in RK,

    The above complaints were what made me completely dismiss the second game and leave it to go dusty until 2020.

    Around a month before writing, I decided to give RK a second chance. I went into playing it with an open mind, assuring myself I would not compare it to the original and I’m having a lot of fun.
    The story may not be as good, but it’s still interesting enough to keep you playing. The characters aren’t as good, but they grow on you. The combat isn’t as great but once you get into it, it’s surprisingly deep and varied. The tactic tweaker adds extra layers to the combat system making it much deeper than it first appears. The cutscenes are dull in comparison, and there’s way to much text, voice acting would have been preferred, but the animation does try to feel like studio Ghibli.
    The Familiars have been replaced with Higgledies. Which are admittedly cute, and can help in battle and are fun to collect.
    The world is well designed and the sound score is fantastic (mainly because it’s a rehash of the first games).
    The game has a fair bit of variety with the Kingdom management system, which is a welcome change and Skirmish battles which are large scale battles that take place in a isometric view and require a different form of tactics than the main combat system.

    There’s a lot to love when not compared to the original. Ni No Kuni 2 is a fun action RPG with hours of entertainment to offer, if you can forgive the changes and just give it a chance!    … Expand

I don’t like the design of some playable characters, but I have to admit I purchased the season pass and I rarely do so on a game so quickly. 10 minutes into de game you already know this is not an ordinary rpg, it is a piece of art.

    1. Needing an upgrade to boost map move speed when moving on ground lucky i found out early because before it it was driving me insane.

    2. I get 500,000 guilders and go on a shopping spree for saviours tears and healing items to use in battle with a level 69 tainted monster which beat me twice and the items i brought don't show up for use in battle. Very annoying basically ruined the game for me, considering my inventory prior battle says i have 240 saviours teams and 140+ four soreways and i spent all my guilders on these items if there is a cap to the number you can take into battle it should be clearly told to the player. (It leaves me with 3 saviours wtf and 5 fourways). I didn't feel like grinding at all so i thought i could judge use healing items and dodging to get through some battles but that isn't the case.

    3. Some quests are not clear item wise. A bully button is not a screw.

    Positives
    Tactics system is nice but it would be nice to dump another 50 points into tactics so i can at least have 3 permantely choose at 5.
    I would like to be able to max XP gain ever more too with tactics tweaker as i am not a fan of grinding when everything else is pretty much done. (having an automatic in place for tactics tweaker would be a plus for people who just want to play not mess around with bunch of settings).    … Expand

    The story is for sure a high point, along with the gameplay with elements of JRPG mixed with hack n slash features.
    Cons: side quests are way too repetitive. Poor skills diversity.

    Can't wait for the season pass content!

    Gameplay 8 - The thing I liked most about the gameplay is that it has a lot of variety, it is a mix between RPG, strategy, and city building but what makes it unique is how all of those elements compliment each other. Upgrading your Kingdom allows you to upgrade your weapons and magic in combat. Finding new citizens through side quests allows you to grow your population, upgrade your buildings and technology. Certain characters you find improve your military and give your army advantages in skirmishes. Dungeon crawling and questing can grant you new items that can be used to win over new citizens for your city. It all works fairly seamlessly together to make an addictive experience. On the downside, a lot of the side quests are just basic fetch quests. There is usually a bit of story involved but many of the quests felt like more of a chore than a fun immersive experience. Combat is also quite shallow. There are some cool spells but I found most of the time I ended the battle before even getting to use my more impressive abilities. There were a good number of boss battles but almost all of them were quite easy. The enemies look better in this game than in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch but there is much less variety. Since enemy monsters can't be tamed like in the first game it made combat far less interesting and there was less motivation to engage. The menu system is good but not as good as the Wizards Companion in the first game.

    Story 7 - The story is enjoyable enough, it has a lot of similarities to the first game while still having its own identity but it is more simplistic and has far less lore and depth. There are a few twists and turns but I found it fairly predictable. It kept me engaged but never really amazed me. I did appreciate that almost everything is well explained though and it does a good job of justifying how the world works even if it is fairly simple.

    World 8 - While I didn't like the world as much in this game as Wrath of the White Witch, it was still full of many interesting locations. Every area that you visit has something new to offer and all of the major cities in the game are totally different in terms of their design and culture. There are quite a few different dungeons to conquer and while there is a lot of repetition there is also a lot of variety. There aren't quite as many puzzle sections as I would have liked but enough to keep things interesting and fresh throughout the whole experience. The over world seemed a bit sparse but just like in the first games there are some really cool ideas both in terms of visual world building and lore.

    Characters 6 - The game gets points for having a huge cast and each character that you recruit for your Kingdom has a little story. Considering that there are over 100 that is very impressive. Unfortunately I just found that almost none of them really evolved. You learn almost everything you need to know about each character within minutes of meeting them. For an RPG of this scale I would have liked to see more depth and meaningful character development especially in the main cast members. Evan went through far less development than Oliver did in the first game. Roland's story starts out very intriguing but it failed to really build on that intrigue. Batu and Tani are kind of generic side kick characters who never really grow or have meaningful interactions with Evan. The main villain of the story is also far less interesting than the villains from the first game. I didn't really find any of the characters compelling.

    Visual Design 8 - The game looks very good for the most part. The anime style looks great in cities and dungeons. The character designs are simple yet appealing and the menus look good. There are some really good monster designs, although it would have been nice if there were more. The weakest part of the game visually is the over world and skirmishes. For some reason they decided to go with a different style for the over world in this game and I think it looks much worse. The big headed characters just look silly and I don't know why they chose to change styles because the first game over world looked better.

    However, at points ni no kuni 2 really doesn't respect your time and feels padded. One chapter in particular stands out for this. It mostly involves your party trying to get a library card.. but you have to do three favors for the librarian... which are mostly fetch quests... and your reward for all of this is four small written texts offering some information on neighboring kingdoms. This is just one example but dealing with these kind of dull fetch quests repeatedly was disheartening. Also you should note that kingdom building and the skirmish battles aren't really optional as they are necessary for completing certain story objectives. Personally I found skirmish battles to be a nice change of pace and kingdom building can be quite fun too but you should note that none of the progression systems in ni no kuni 2 can really be ignored.
    Also there are difficulty spikes starting around chapter 5/6. You'll start noticing monsters and bosses are much stronger than you. Unfortunately grinding can be quite slow in this game even if you develop your kingdom and build facilities which offer experience boosts. You may find you're spending more time than you'd like fighting monsters.
    Overall though I did really enjoy my time with this game. The story is quite nice, the combat is fun, the progression systems are interesting and the animation is fantastic. It has its flaws but personally it's an improvement over the first game. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes jrpgs/ghibli animation.    … Expand

    The combat system was a real treat. Lots of different ways you can build your party, especially with the introduction of higgeldies. It was the right move to switch from a more traditional ATB battle system from the first game to an action one in the second game.

    I really enjoyed skirmishes, though there are plenty of people that didn't. Fortunately, with the most recent patch, it's easier to see what skirmishes you've completed and which ones you haven't.

    The cons for me lie in the story and ease of combat. The story wasn't awful, but I thought it was much worse compared to the first game. It may not be fair to make that comparison, but I am. I also felt the game was way too forgiving and easy in regards to combat. I would love to see an option to adjust combat difficulty in a future patch.

    Overall, I had a blast with this game, and will definitely play it again down the road.    … Expand

Like the world map, the battle system also received a downgrade from the original game. The game ditches the Pokemon-esque fighting system and moves towards something more in the vein of the Tales series, which is to say that it became for vanilla JRPG. This new system is clunky and unrewarding. The saving grace for the game is that it rewards you in other ways. The kingdom creator is the backbone, and what ultimately drives the player throughout NNK2. While not on the level of many city-simulation games, it is still a fun way to reward players for exploring within the game. Spoken dialogue is sparse, and the story really could have been great with more effort, but the ending still evokes emotion dispite all of this, something many games are unable to achieve.… Expand

The goal of the game is to build a new kingdom and to have all the kingdoms of the world sign a peace treaty called the "declaration of interdependence". This journey will have you traveling throughout each kingdom and discovering new lands as you build your little town into a thriving kingdom. Of the three gameplay types, the real-time strategy is definitely the weakest. it is not by any means a negative, but it does stand out as being less engaging an activity. The art style and animation is what will stand out for most. It is very reminiscent of Ghibli films and their art style, Cartoony and simplistic, but endearing. The open world is for the most part an traditional RPG format with miniaturized character models who travel through areas with sparse roaming enemies who will trigger a combat scenario if encountered. The leveling system and combat mechanics are superb with many ways to master combat abilities to take on the toughest foes. Very rewarding. To mention some negatives, the game sometimes relies to heavily on reading character text rather than hearing the voice actors. It would have been nice to have that extra effort put in and experience more character acting. The story is fun but by no means the pinnacle of pristine story telling. I was invested in Oliver's journey even before he gets to the Other World. I am having a hard time discovering who I am supposed to care about in this game after 10 hours and I do hope that changes as I am still having fun with the game. My main problem with this game is with the story: while I know that it is intended to be more like a fairy tale for all ages, this has to be one of the most simplistic, one-dimensional stories I have seen in a long time. The game makes a few rushed attempts at “character development” in later chapters, but it never feels natural. For the most part, characters have next to no backstory, few internal conflicts, and seem to always make the perfect, most morally-just decisions. Even in a fairy tale, is there not room for a bit more complexity and fleshing out of characters? My other gripes include no difficulty options, bland side quests, mostly boring and uninspired dungeons, chibi design for the overworld and kingdom building (this is more of a personal taste), and the dearth of voice-acting. Only about ~10% of the dialogue is voiced; it really hurt major scenes to just have silence and text bubbles.    … Expand

    I loved the prequel, but hated the combat system. NNK2 fixed that particular issue I had.
    Otherwise however, I have to say that the sequel doesn't live up to the greatness that was the first Ni No Kuni with the exception of the art style, which is a damn shame.

    For the most part this is a pretty amazing game.     The thing is, as the game came to it's third act I found the difficulty spiked up and I had to run around doing a bunch of fetch quests and random monster kills just to get my level up when all I wanted to do was to finish the story. I get that games like this need a bit of grinding here and there but it felt like that's all I did for the second half of the game, and even then I was faced with an end boss that I almost didn't beat, and not in a valiant struggle way, but more of a 'FFS what is this?' way.

    The characters are a mixed bunch and overall were put together and voiced very well. The thing is, when you're wandering around in general, as well as in the middle of battle, you can choose to control anybody in your party. For 95% of it I chose Roland and the 5% I didn't was because either I'd got Roland killed in battle or I pressed the switch character button by accident. That's not to say the other characters were bad, it was just that Roland was the standout cool guy that I couldn't not be, you know?

    My main bugbear with the game though is the military battle sections. They were fine the first few times but to have to keep grinding through these all the way through to the end was a pain in the ass and it really ruined the flow of the game for me. It's a testament to the rest of the game that I wanted to power through these and not turn my console off. It's nice that they tried to explore something new, but I think it fell a little flat for this.

    But look, if you loved the first one (and most people did) then I think you will enjoy this as well. Just be patient and be prepared to soak in the gorgeous and colourful backdrops and characters.    … Expand

    This game really was different. I got this game because it seemed more like a kids game but the story was very good. there are ups and downs but i was overall pleased. The visual gave a more cartoon / anime feel and it played very well. not as violent as i hoped and it was all giggidy but i still liked this.

    Maybe Ni No Kuni 3 will be the consacration of this IP, with some improving. This still is a really good game, but not a masterpiece

    Ni No Kuni II is truly a tale, deliberately naïve and full of colorful characters. The combination of different genres, JRPG, management and RTS, works well, as each style is interwoven with the others.
