    After going through and playing Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, I think it’s safe to say that it’s a pretty good game.It was fun, and it had a lot of aspects that were pretty wonderful like the game play, which was fast paced and engaging, and some aspects it fell a little flat in, like the writing of the characters. But overall, my review will encompace certain aspects of the game that tie into the overall enjoyment, like it’s genre and aesthetic, and I’ll talk about how some aspects just didn’t pay out well.

    Ni No Kuni II is about as much of a hack and slash Action JRPG, Japanese Role Playing Game, as it can be. The game play is very simplistic, but it does have some satisfying moments when you land a special strike or dodging a large enemy attack. Ni No Kuni also formats itself to a lot of JRPG tropes which is more team centric focus where you’re controlling a team of people towards one goal as opposed to a Western RPG that’s more player focused like Skyrim. Along with that, there is And if you’re interested in playing a hack and slash JRPG, Ni No Kuni would be right up your alley.

    Another that drew me into Ni No Kuni was how it looked and the fact that the first game has animated cutscenes made by Studio Ghibli, creator of such animated films like Spirited Away. This unexpected partnership between Level-5 Studios and Ghibli produced a visually stunning game Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. Which then lead to a large audience wanting a new game and after years later, Level-5 Studios makes a new game with intentions to allow the players to explore the world of Ni No Kuni. And I have to say that Ni No Kuni packs a punch in terms of visuals, it really sells that feeling of being somewhere magical and mystical, like you’re in another world. But it does fall short, in comparison to the first because it lacks that 2D animation flair that made the first game so special. The different worlds that you go to also have their own flair, and although it doesn’t have special 2d cutscenes, I believe that it still is stunning.

    My main issue with the game stems from the writing. The narrative of the story follows a basic format, and it’s seems to add no struggle or conflict with the characters. There are no stakes when Evan, the main character does something. Evan is about as boring as white bread. He hardly changes throughout the story, and every conflict that he’s given is solved by being kind. He makes no hard decisions or gives the players hard decisions to make. The game, as explorative as it is, railroads the player into these situations. Because of this it’s difficult to engage the players into the game, which is a huge issue when the game is focused on Evan and the story.

    I believed that this issue could have been avoided if the game focused more on who they were creating it for. What I mean by that is that, there was a 7 year gap in between the first game and the second, and as that progressed the audience of the game grew up too. I think the game is very child like, and the marketing insisted that the story was more grown up and the world was more expansive for those who played the original and wanted to explore the world of Ni No Kuni. So a lot of people say that the game is too easy and story is really basic because it’s kind of made for kids when the community is comprised of adults and teens. As for kids who play this game, I think it’s good. It enforces that “be nice” mentality, and it teaches a lot of good morals.

    In summary, I believe that the game is good for people who enjoy Studio Ghibli films, and enjoy the sort of hack and slash combat system tied in with small kingdom building simulator. Along with the large world exploration and the different areas to go through, I also believe that Ni No Kuni has an amazing concept and a creative and well created world. But the main issues fall in the writing of the story and the balancing system. And if you want an aesthetically pleasing 3d cartoon style game, I would also recommend the game.     Graphics are good, story is not. Because it is hidden behind too many mini games. The combat is extremely slow, due to bad animation sequences.

    So I'm 15 hours into Ni No Kuni 2 and it's great artistic-wise and the overall gameplay and open world exploring is really good...but...I'm finding it really difficult to stay interested, it's a little too childish and simplistic for me (yes I know it was made to be that way) and certain things like the kingdom building and army wars I just can't get into...And a lot of the side charactersSo I'm 15 hours into Ni No Kuni 2 and it's great artistic-wise and the overall gameplay and open world exploring is really good...but...I'm finding it really difficult to stay interested, it's a little too childish and simplistic for me (yes I know it was made to be that way) and certain things like the kingdom building and army wars I just can't get into...And a lot of the side characters really annoy me...     Beautiful game the hours pass by fast. I just dont like some of the camera angles and the mandatory fights you go through when a lower level enemy spots you, can be annoying due to enemy being low lvl and you high level

    I thoroughly enjoyed Ni No Kuni 2 overall, although I had several gripes that prevented it from becoming a classic.

    First, for what I loved. The art direction and cell-shaded graphics are incredibly beautiful, with a nice variation in locales (Goldpaw in particular is a stand-out). The varied gameplay systems including kingdom-building, skirmishes, real-time battles, and exploration    I thoroughly enjoyed Ni No Kuni 2 overall, although I had several gripes that prevented it from becoming a classic.

    First, for what I loved. The art direction and cell-shaded graphics are incredibly beautiful, with a nice variation in locales (Goldpaw in particular is a stand-out). The varied gameplay systems including kingdom-building, skirmishes, real-time battles, and exploration meshed together surprisingly well; I found the kingdom-building to be enjoyably addictive in particular. While generally quite easy, I also actually had just a lot of fun with the battle system; seldom did it feel stale.

    Now, for my gripes. My main problem with this game is with the story: while I know that it is intended to be more like a fairy tale for all ages, this has to be one of the most simplistic, one-dimensional stories I have seen in a long time. The game makes a few rushed attempts at “character development” in later chapters, but it never feels natural. For the most part, characters have next to no backstory, few internal conflicts, and seem to always make the perfect, most morally-just decisions. Even in a fairy tale, is there not room for a bit more complexity and fleshing out of characters? My other gripes include no difficulty options, bland side quests, mostly boring and uninspired dungeons, chibi design for the overworld and kingdom building (this is more of a personal taste), and the dearth of voice-acting. Only about ~10% of the dialogue is voiced; it really hurt major scenes to just have silence and text bubbles.    … Expand

    I was heartbroken with disappointment when I found out that Ghibli was not behind this game. And boy, you could feel it. The story is painfully full of plot devices that will test your patience. Gameplay and art are beautifully done, but I came for the story and left in sadness. If you don't care about the story on a game, give it a try. If story is important for you, run away or buy it on sale.

    The story this time around is much less personal.. its vewry politics heavy.. hes just a child that wants to make the world a better place. .a lot of cgrowing and learning to hopefully become a great leader of this land and because of this less personal tale, I had less interest in how the game played out overall…
    The first game had a slow but beautiful build up and introduction to its characters, this time around everything is sped up, youre told your motives in passing, everything happens so fast, and I just found myself not caring.
    So no good story, were off to a bad start..
    Thankfully the gameplay and rpg ellements of this game keep you hooked for this games roughly 30 hour campaign..
    unfortunately also changed is the pokemon aspect.. youre no longer collecting monsters, instead theres an action rpg twist, when youre roaming the open lands youre in chibby form and youre pulled into a little arena to battle, and hwen youre in tighter spaced evrythiong is pulled in and its much more westernized where you hop right into battle and go, the combat system is much more simpler this time around, magic is rewarded quickly and spent with the hold of a trigger and the press of an action button, leaving combat to be fast and fluent requiring little strategy…
    however the strategy of the first game is what made me fall in love with it aside from the pokemon character collecting aspects..
    here not much thinking is required… hack and slash your way through battles..
    things are so easy that I found boss battles to be easer than regular random encounters…
    I still had fun with all of this though, opening chests and picking up loot, throwing loot on my part members which like the first game can be swapped through during battle at anytime, and you can bring up to 3 members into combat, gaining new party members as you get deeper into the story..
    There are also thewse little higgledy characters you can collect by trading them items that will join you to aid oyu in battle with elemental damage or healing you.
    the good of this game ends thers, in it combat..
    the rest it just sets out to take away all of the heart and charm this series had…
    theres and insane lack of cutscnes and voice acting here.. giving you more reason to not care whats going on.. theres a little siege battle mini game that adds absolutely nothing to the game, and the worst addition the kingdom management that sets out to turn this giant jrpg into a mobile game, if jrpgs weren’t long enough, you now have to wait hours in real time for your kingdom to collect currency for you to build stations and set out residence to do research so you can craft the best gear…
    you aren’t bothered with amanging this kingdom, but there are definitely speedbumps that stop story progression until you build your kingom up to a certain point…
    so youre forced to go out and do sidequests to recruit new citizens for your kingdom
    it feels like a giant time waster, I don’t necessarily hate that it’s a thing.. you are a little adorable king after all.. but I hate that its forced on you at times and runs on a free to play mobile game timer nonsense, I didn’t find the kingdom to be necessary at all as the combat is so easy here…
    but I do like the new fast travel options making this forced sidequest bit not too much of hassle..
    and I did love the design of this world its towns and its bosses…
    If theres one thing this series does right its world building…
    im disappointed that this isn’t more of what the first game was…
    but this is still a solid game..
    sure youll have to bite down and pull yourself through the mobile garbage, and skim theough the boring generic feeling story…
    but in between these bits is a great and addictive jrpg set in a world that feels connected and real.

    Action JRPG muy entretenido y visualmete muy bonito. La música del maestro Joe Hisaishi es estupenda como no podría ser de otro modo. Lo peor es que durante mucho tiempo el juego tiene una dificultad muy baja y echo en falta un selector de dificultad. El sistema de combate me ha gustado mucho.

    The soundtrack is beautiful but too few songs so it gets repetetive fast.

    What's really positive is the kingdom building and the graphics. That's about it.

    I love JRPGs but this was a huge let down and disappointment. And I finished it with 100%.

    I really enjoyed this game. You have to be open to clicking dialogues because there is a lot of that. But the story and fighting is fun. Might be a bit to easy but it"s fun.

    1. Needing an upgrade to boost map move speed when moving on ground lucky i found out early because before it it was driving me insane.

    2. I get 500,000 guilders and go on a shopping spree for saviours tears and healing items to use in battle with a level 69 tainted monster which beat me twice and the items i brought don't show up for use in battle. Very annoying basically ruined the game for me, considering my inventory prior battle says i have 240 saviours teams and 140+ four soreways and i spent all my guilders on these items if there is a cap to the number you can take into battle it should be clearly told to the player. (It leaves me with 3 saviours wtf and 5 fourways). I didn't feel like grinding at all so i thought i could judge use healing items and dodging to get through some battles but that isn't the case.

    3. Some quests are not clear item wise. A bully button is not a screw.

    Tactics system is nice but it would be nice to dump another 50 points into tactics so i can at least have 3 permantely choose at 5.
    I would like to be able to max XP gain ever more too with tactics tweaker as i am not a fan of grinding when everything else is pretty much done. (having an automatic in place for tactics tweaker would be a plus for people who just want to play not mess around with bunch of settings).    … Expand

    I did everything that I could even exhausting every one's dialogue; I have a tendecy to do that in every jrpg xD

    The story was simple and the characters lacked character development
    I really wish I knew more about these characters and serve more of a greater purpose than just being there once their arc is finished
    (Would love more interactions and bond with the crew kinda like in Tales games or any other JRPGS)

    Also wish they utilize more of the battle system; its fun but too short except for when you fight some of the harder tainted monsters and giant beasts in the over world.

    The voice acting and music were amazing but I wish there was a bit more!
    Would love a bit more interesting and variety in the side quests! There's so many in this game :O
    Really love the higgledies and some of the ones late game are so fun to use

    I loved the skirmishes too!
    It's a fun mini game and I love the different units you get to play around with; some of them gets pretty intense
    There are some issues with it though like the text boxes are a bit too small to read and some of the units get stuck at a bridge to the next area

    Mainly what I love about this game is Kingdom Building!
    It's really satisfying to watch Evermore grows as you keep recruiting more citizens and I love interacting with them

    Another thing I really like are the kingdoms you get to go; the music and design behind it are amazing. I love exploring these kingdoms!

    Overall I'm giving it a 8.5!
    There are problems with Ni no Kuni 2 but the art style and the whole feeling of building a kingdom is amazing
    It is a very solid JRPG filled with many content and hours
    Definitely recommend it to those who want to get into JRPGS

    After playing Ni no kuni 2 for a good amount of time, I honestly have to say that the game gets boring and frustrating as the myriad of gameplay ideas are just mashed together with very little focus, or worse very little explaining which creates a strange experience for the player.

    Ni no kuni 2 unfortunately fails in several major departments, the action rpg aspects suffer in several areas, healing for instance is pretty terrible especially as you progress further into the game. The higgledies if anything, are more annoying and a bothersome mechanic that doesn't really work too well, give me some proper healing spells instead of opening up menus and eating some candy or relying on the higgles to heal...which is far too hit/miss to rely on it.

    Combat mechanics also feels weak, most battles can be won by spamming aoe attacks. Occasionally you might get a few monsters that actually present a challenge causing the player to actually attack with a bit of strategy but most of the time its button mashing, the dodge and blocking skills are almost useless, well dodge is your more useful defensive skill - blocking is pretty much useless as you're facing sometimes upwards of 10 mobs in anyone battle and from all sides that you're character will get hit off-screen regardless, not that it really matters.

    The quest system is far too drawn out and laborious, even grindy at times with many quests giving you vague, even cryptic information often requiring trial and error or simply checking up a guide, this isn't good side quest material and needs to be better.

    Managing the kingdom again, feels like padding out game time - all the times worth in real time, and are paused when you log off the system. Although, the timers are not terribly long - it still feels unnecessary to force the player to check back to collect kingdom gold every once in a while to keep upgrading the city, even the strategy battles feels like an unnecessary mini-game to pad out the time as well, this was a major flaw in the original NNK but the opposite as the original game was super short, NNK has padded out the gametime as much as possible often creating a boring, almost borderline grindfest moments.

    Whilst NNK2 isn't a bad game, its got more than a few moments when it shines. Some of the questionable flaws, all the mechanics thrown into the mixing pot and all the gameplay padding weaken the experience. Overall, it is a pretty good game but far from perfect.    … Expand

    I think it's a charmful story with easy but solid gameplay, a lot of imagination and cute characters, I was a bit confused with the short video scenes a the lack of voice acting but I finish enjoying it, I remembered the likes of Persona 5 in that scene.

    The story progress nicely and the different play styles are a plus, I just wanted more enemy variety and dungeon variety, aside from    I think it's a charmful story with easy but solid gameplay, a lot of imagination and cute characters, I was a bit confused with the short video scenes a the lack of voice acting but I finish enjoying it, I remembered the likes of Persona 5 in that scene.

    The story progress nicely and the different play styles are a plus, I just wanted more enemy variety and dungeon variety, aside from that, it visible that a lot of the resources went in to the building kingdom, 100 unique characters join your great kingdom and I felt like the development was amazing, not too demanding but not thrown just for the sake of it.

Skirmishes and kingdom building are fun additions to the series, but they don't make up for the lackluster battle system which in part feels slightly lacking due to the removal of familiars.

    Seemingly unimportant UI/UX decisions also add a clunkiness to the overall experience, including too small/fast/long dialogue boxes and unclear active vs. inactive button styling. No ability to change the difficulty setting also seems like an important oversight.

    Overall, Ni No Kuni 2 still gets many things right and is an enjoyable enough experience, but it was a step-down for the series.    … Expand

    NI no kuni 2 is a really good game that I love almost the whole way through. What makes the main story so good is the characters they are really good and memorable. There were a few moments that I felt were not needed. They tried to build tension, but they gave away the twist which ruined it. There was a twist in the end that I thought was pretty good and took me by siprise.

    The combat in ni no kuni is super good and I enjoyed it a lot and never got tired of it. The tainted monster were tough but were a joy to fight each one of them was tough unless I overl eved it by a lot. The dungeons were well made and really fun to fight through. The dream were fun and a good distraction from the main game.

    I loved the side quests in this game they were fun. Insted of them being something you can do on the side they are mandatory. They were enjoyable and did not become repetitive.

    This was what I thought this part was the weaker part of the game. The kingdom building is fun and enjoyable and satisfying to watch your kingdom grow and get stronger. The skirmishes in my opinion were fun but gets really boring after a while.

    Over ni no kuni 2 is an amazing game that I would recommend for any one love a good JRPG.    … Expand

Combat, exploration, and side quests were a lot of fun. Each NPC in your kingdom had its own unique story. There were a lot of fetch quests involved, but the dialogue between Evan and the NPCs were aNi No Kuni 2 was a blast to play. I put enough time into it to get the platinum (though I still have some end game content left to tackle). All in all, I have about 70 hours put into the game.     The soundtrack for the game is top notch. There's some recycled music from Ni No Kuni: WOTWW, which I was fine with.

    The combat system was a real treat. Lots of different ways you can build your party, especially with the introduction of higgeldies. It was the right move to switch from a more traditional ATB battle system from the first game to an action one in the second game.

    I really enjoyed skirmishes, though there are plenty of people that didn't. Fortunately, with the most recent patch, it's easier to see what skirmishes you've completed and which ones you haven't.

    The cons for me lie in the story and ease of combat. The story wasn't awful, but I thought it was much worse compared to the first game. It may not be fair to make that comparison, but I am. I also felt the game was way too forgiving and easy in regards to combat. I would love to see an option to adjust combat difficulty in a future patch.

    Overall, I had a blast with this game, and will definitely play it again down the road.    … Expand

The game retains its somewhat childish narrative but thats also something thats encouraged by me, i am kinda sick of all these dystopian games with all the doom and gloom.

    I like the higgles but they do fall a bit flat, its hard to really see the difference between them and there is no real incentive to swop them. The first game did this a bit better with the familiers allies.

    I really enjoy the kingbuilding part, but as some ppl have written, its a bit tedious and have spend a good 3-4 hours just letting the game roll without playing to accumulate funds. I think they also made the builder a bit bloated, they could have easily streamlined it.

    I loved the prequel, but hated the combat system. NNK2 fixed that particular issue I had.
    Otherwise however, I have to say that the sequel doesn't live up to the greatness that was the first Ni No Kuni with the exception of the art style, which is a damn shame.

I somehow feel that this game really more about kingdom building game than RPG, you will spend so much time in building your kingdom, waiting for resources, looking for new citizens, upgrading etc.
    The story is too    Good Game.. the battle system is not too fun, sometimes boring.. the difficulties are increasing slowly. Quests are various and not that repetitive, it has various events.     I have played the first one - Ni No Kuni and so I had very high expectations. I would say this game has a different tone and game-play than the original, but none the less, just as charming. You don’t need to play the first Ni No Kuni to really enjoy the 2nd one, completely two different worlds, story and gameplay. Overall, I would give this a 9/10 so far and here is how I broke it down.

    Graphics- 10 absolutely the best! Its basically JRPG anime game! It virtually looks like you are playing an ANIME game. The hand drawn characters, background and settings are very impressive. They did a fantastic job and thought the cut scenes were amazing.

    Sound- 9.5. The music chords and instruments are spectacular and very easy to listen to. You can tell that real instruments are being played and it works harmoniously with the story and combat. A few criticisms about the Song are lack of variety being played during certain battle sequences and cut-scenes. I wished final boss songs were different than the regular . I also felt more dubs were needed in the story. They left way too much voice acting out of the story telling. I think it had to be because of budget?

    Story- 9.0- while the story started off very slow compared the first Ni No Kuni this was picks up after chapter 6.. And the final chapter 9 actually has some good spots.. But it just didn't have the charm or story telling that Studio Ghibli had in the original! I felt this wasn’t as emotional, or as impressive as the first one, but still very good! The character development is not as strong and I am not too sure if I have a connection with King Evan as the main protagonist. While the other characters are interesting I wished we had a more of backstory to them as well so we can feel like we are a team rather than randomly adding new characters to the roster.

    Gameplay- 9! Here is where I can tell they (Bandai) spent a lot of time in. I am really enjoying the various gameplays- building my kingdom- Sim City, which has a direct impact on my weapons, magic and everything! Also, the fun Army’s Battles was a great addition as well. The only thing I don't care about are the invisible walls when going into battle fights. The invisible walls are distracting and made some fights a bit difficult since my character can get stuck. Basically, I think they took TALES games and incorporated the battle mechanics in this since they are owned by same company -Bandai. Pe

    -Critics and other gamers are saying the game isn’t challenging enough? I sort of agree in some aspects, but I disagree if they are fighting against enemies 20+ levels higher than your characters aren't fast traveling back to get healed up. If you really want to make it challenging you can! Don't have any armor, don't use potions, don't use any special attacks.. You can make it like Dark Souls if you really wanted too - but 90% of players are just saying its too easy because that's basically the only critique they have.

    Overall- 9.0/10! This is definitely an amazing game and disregard anything lower than 8 on this. With the amazing graphics, sounds and gameplay, it has me hooked and played over 50hrs within 3days. I am looking forward to the expansion that will come later on and I will continue my review once I finished it but so far so good. And the only real criticism I have is the story, not enough voice in story, and character development is a tad weak and not as strong as the first original Ni No Kuni. But that's because Studio Ghibli was not involved. But overall it's still a very solid game and would recommend players to try!    … Expand

Update 4/16/18: I have finally completed this game and after doing so I have some issues with the glaringly obtuse portions of the game both in the plot and the story not to mention some of the silliest gameplay choices I have seen in quite awhile.

    Plot: The game is whimsical and child-like, but that didn't mean the plot also had to be insipid and obvious. Villians change sides on a whim with nearly no explanation other than "Durrr, I need to be good now."

    Story: Ni No Kuni 2 doesn't know what it is, what it was going to be, whose story it is, or where it's really going. Is it Evan's story? Is it Roland's story? What character in this group has any story to speak of outside their introduction to the game? Even Doloran and his impromptu reasons for doing anything (you literally find out his reasons at the very end of the game during the final battle). I had no clue until the very end why anything happened or what everything meant....if you can even call it that. There is near to no LORE to the world and very little connection to the prior game. This line of storytelling was a massive letdown for me and soured the entirety of the experience.

    Gameplay: Combat is a joke where the only difficulty lies in simply the abnormal amount of damage later enemies can dish out (one-shot deaths) and the arbitrary limit on items usable in combat. The enemies never get more challenging...just their damage output. That is just lazy.

    Extra point-Endgame after endgame: There is no endgame...there is a ridiculous partitioning of content that can be finished after you beat the final boss. A literal chunk of the game the devs hacked off from the main game that should not have been here. Final armors/weapons/finishing off evermore and the only place where you could obtain the tools necessary to fight the game's "SECRET BOSS" (10th dream door). Not to mention the absurd notion that all the crafting items you need to get those tools reside inside this one place...and they expect you to grind and grind and grind it until you are high enough level to take it on. This was the stupidest choice Level 5 made and really left me despising them for it. Hours upon hours of building my kingdom and you stick completing it after beating everything?

    Bad job folks, really bad job.

    I enjoyed NI NO KUNI: Wrath of the White Witch, though if you asked me why I really couldn't tell you. The only things I can remember about that game was the music, the art style, the pokemon-like combat: the whimsical feel of everything. In many aspects, the first game was ALL style and ZERO substance.

    Still, for me, that was just fine, and that's rare. Superficial components never carry a title for me--I need more than that in a game, but this series did it...kind of.

    So when I heard there was going to be a new title coming and the things that I superficially liked from the first game were more or less gone--I was wary. After spending a few hours with the game though, I was pleased.

    Let's get this right out of the way: NI NO KUNI 2 is simple...Way too simple. Combat might be the easiest I have ever come across yet. At level 3 I was able to take down world enemies 8-10 levels above me with ease. Even higher level enemies were simple by steering clear of them and fighting at range. Still, you can spam enemies in straight-up combat with little worry or use of the higgles or items (at least at the very early set of the game). I don't want "dark souls" but I also don't want "sesame street" and this game veers too close to sesame street.

    The graphics are wonderful. With full 4k and HDR enabled, the game is stunning. There are very few jagged animations and movement is fluid in "dungeons" and open world combat.

    The musical score takes its cues from the original title, with soaring and whimsical arrangements to suit the moment (mostly). There were a few moments when the music and location did not line up, but can easily be overlooked due to how wonderful it is.

    The story is cheesy and frankly, common fare for the genre. I would have liked more depth, but it doesn't derail too much from the overall package. Also, the splotchy use of voice acting is a down note. Sometimes there are spoken words, sometimes you get a perfunctory word like "Yes" or "Ah" but not much more, and sometimes you just get word bubbles. I would preferred consistency here. Either actual voice acting for the whole game or NO voice acting for the whole game. As it is right now, it feels disjointed at best or unfinished at worst.

    The biggest point for me with the time I've spent with the game so far is if I will continue and finish or just abandon it for something better (or go back to a game I've already started). I think for the time being I will continue until I beat it. It seems to be a good time but doesn't do anything revolutionary. I feel like I've played this game before and that's not a bad thing, but it could have been more.    … Expand

    Graphics/art: 9.5/10. With Studio Ghibli giving support what can go wrong? Not much. The only thing that is lacking is that it would have been great to have some Studio Ghibli 2D cutscenes instead of the sort of screen shot Studio-Ghilbli0image-with-dialouge that we get some times

    Story: 8/10. The story is very optimistic and reminiscent of a classic JRPG. That being said it was almost too easy to get side tracked by side quests and things could have been harder for the main character in chapters other than chapter one to give it more meat (while still retaining the game's T rating).

    Gameplay: 8.5/10: Fun, Somewhat strategic. At least strategic enough to not be button mashing. Gathering side quests could get a bit repetitive however.

    Extras/Side quests: 10/10: With over 100 citizens to recruit and a multitude of gathering and fighting side quests you can't be bored. Finally a game has come along with some great kingdom building to fill the void that the Suikoden Series has left! The kingdom building was honestly my favorite part of the game. That being said it in no way diminished from the overall story, but I would recommend doing side quests throughout instead of procrastinating them because then it could distract from the story.

    Overall: 9/10: Very, very good game. Fun to play with a lot of fun characters. The story could use a bit more meat but the multitude of personalities and kingdom building more than make up for it.    … Expand

The problem is that because the game is so easy there is no point in using the robust battle mechanics the game actually offer. There are lots of cool skills to use, familiars to care about that have cool effects, but none of them matter as you can just button mash through most of the game.

    I can't stress this enough. For a JRPG that is mostly built around you fighting monsters, getting better gear and stuff, it's infuriating how little challenge the game actually throws at you. What's even worse is that the fun Kingdom building system gives you lots of cool ways to acquire better gear, but then again, that feature is totally useless because of how easy the game is.

    Most of the other stuff in the game are great. Music is fantastic and so is the graphics, story and it's characters. But the combat falters so much that i have a hard time recommending the game. Luckily for us PC users there are scripts out there to give the enemies more HP and deal more damage so you actually have to dodge, block and use your abilities to be able to deal damage, but i have to judge the game based on what comes from the developer, and combat wise it really sucks. In a sense at least. If you actually use it it’s really fun, but there is no point in doing so because you just kill everything faster and easier just by mashing the attack button.

    This just shows that they have gone for quantity over quality in this game. You have lots of underdeveloped features that aren't balanced to one another and it just feels very bland. Army battles are randomly thrown in that sounds fun on paper but like most other things the game offers it falls flat. It's obvious there was some kind of plan there from the start. Build a kingdom, quests to collect citizens, army battles out on the battlefield, etc. But it all just ends up with lots of features that are very thin and don't get to fully shine.

    With that said i can't have been more disappointed in this game. It sucks seeing the potential here and how the game didn't reach any of it.    … Expand

    I'll list my positives right off the bat, because there's less of that than negatives. The graphics and music are top notch, done. Now, this game heavily relies on its Facebook-tier mechanic known as Kingdom Building. I was hoping that this **** mode would not get in the way of story progression but BOY OH BOY WAS I WRONG. Right when you get to Chapter 9 they force you to level up your Kingdom to stage 3, sounds simple, right? Except it's extremely tedious. You have to get 50 Villagers in total, now how do you do that? You do side quests, a **** ton of them. They vary from fetch quests to fighting monsters. This was annoying and it took me up to 10-15 hours to get the amount of villagers needed to progress. So I get to the final boss right? A nice plot twist happened right before it, a call back to the original game, I was impressed. But soon after I was put in the battle against the final boss, after all the boss rushes which were manageable despite me being very under-leveled, which is another Issue I will tackle in a moment. I did a total of 14 damage to the final boss, there was a 20 level difference between us. I tried killing him and got his Hp down to about 1/10 after about an hour of fighting, and then he gained another HP Bar and killed off my entire party, I gave up because I thought it wasn't worth it, so I looked up the ending on YouTube and as expected it was predictable, but satisfying; although I don't think it would've been worth the grind. So, back to the level Issue, I was under-leveled ever since Chapter 5, although I didn't mind as much back then because I blamed myself for not doing any side stuff. But after doing the amount of side quests they seemingly expect you to do, I was still under-leveled and look what happened versus the final boss. Therefore, I think the pacing of the game is utter **** I usually enjoy grinding in JRPGs but the enemys give you a ridiculously low amount of EXP, even with the booster turned on. There's another mode called Skirmish, i'm just gonna say it's not as irritating as the kingdom building but still un-fun. Now for the Story, it's alright I guess, definitely a step down from the first game and very predictable. Chapter 1 starts off promising but then it turns into a routine until chapter 7. The cast goes to a kingdom, an Issue occurs, you solve it and then fight the king of said kingdom. Nothing more, nothing less. The best character in the whole game was without a doubt, Roland. Everyone else seemed shallow and un-interesting and were cast to the side after their debut.
    I think my review is very subjective, I think someone that enjoys side content and loves pouring hundreds of hours into a game would enjoy this game thoroughly.    … Expand

    Leider ist die Story alles andere als berauschend. Die anderen Mechaniken sind aber hervorragend ineinander verzahnt. Man hat aber öfter den Eindruck das vieles vom Spiel (noch) fehlt. Es sind 2 Große gebiete die eigenheiten aufweisen aber keine Storyrelvanz haben, oder anders gesagt für die Story muss man nur 2/3 der Welt bereisen.

    It's an overrated game. The art style is cute but that is all here. But it doesn't help a weak gameplay and story. Basic game design. A mix of underdeveloped/boring action, puzzle and strategy games in one. I am 10 hours in but I see no point to continue.

I also enjoyed the boss battles of this game it's fun and diverse. Basically, core gameplay and it's elements are all good, it just depends on how tolerant you are to repetitiveness. But as I said, the lack of challenge in this game killed it, it could've been something better, more rewarding, etc. No challenge meant of all the items you can buy in this game, and I only stuck to potions to health, mana and revive. No challenge meant every time an enemy drops a loot, I go "ok" cool; instead of wow I wonder what it does! No challenge meant research into new abilities which take up to 30 minutes for a ability that you may or may not use a lot doesn't feel rewarding. I think you get the point. To end, slightly disappointed in the sequel to ni no kuni which I LOVED. They changed the combat for the worse, and although a tales like combat is fine, the lack of challenge ruined it.     I find myself on the precipice of what feels like the final chapter and can't shake that nagging feeling. The feeling is that this game was too quick. Surely a game with so many side quests and complex (enough) kingdom building system would have several hours of time left so that I can actually utilize the boosts and improvements provided, right? I mean, I did invest countless hours in gathering/poaching citizens, from other kingdoms, researching spells, and the ability to build better gear (which I still haven't needed to take advantage of).

    So... Why does it seem like some joke is being played on me?

    I am one of those folks who played the first game. And while yes, it had it's faults (inconsistent plot pacing, grinding requirements, and a terribly heavy menu system for supporting your... "pokemon"), but in the end it at least held my interest. More-so it compelled me to continue. It's cut-scenes and voice acting were incredibly robust. Certainly it still took some shortcuts, but this new story is so childish it's a wonder there wasn't a Little Golden Book that came along with the game.

    As for things I've appreciated, I did mostly like the more straight forward battle system, when compared to the constant shuffle that existed in the first game. Even if it did err on the side of "make sure your stick has higher numbers and just keep hitting the bad guys. Oh look a higher numbered stick!" Some tactics would have been appreciated. Also, the Higgledee's are really one of the best things in a game, like ever... Cute + Powerful + Support equals a win in my book.

    I'd made peace long before playing the game that this wasn't going to be exactly the same world as the previous entry, and even adjusted to the less colorful visuals... But in the end, this world feels less populated, less functional, and less immersive than the previous title. 2 towns, an old woman's cottage, 5 kingdoms/cities make up the whole world, and a billion caves. And if I ignore the non-mandatory quests... I only ever have to visit them once or twice. I'm really tempted to replay the game and see how much more difficult it is with only doing the main story.

    In the end, I'm left wondering...
    Why some reference to the first game at the beginning (the trial), and then abandon it from there on? I mean... Where are the faeries!?!
    Why is Ding Dong Dell the only city that spans the two titles...? Are they hoping to pull a Cid-style thing from the FF series, where in each title there's a Ding Dong Dell?
    Where's Evan's mom in all of this? She's mentioned briefly at the start of the game, then forgotten like cheap hummus.
    And why are there only 10 creatures that you have to fight over and over in the game? Sure they're reskinned, renamed, but it's the same creature with basically the same skill set.
    And finally, am I the only one who never purchased gear/food/items from any of the shops... ever?    … Expand

Pirates join and seemingly forget they're supposed to be pirates. You get a ship so late it doesn't matter. Some spells are used for one or two quests, then pointless.

    Then there's skirmishes, which is this game's attempt to be a new version of Suikoden. Except that they're either way too easy or way too difficult. There's no middle ground. Additionally, some commands don't respond.

    Higgledies are largely pointless except for large bosses, and only then due to the fact that you can only carry a limited number of each item into battle - something that isn't told to you.

    The game lacks a useful purpose for all of the various team members. I mostly ran through the first half of the game with the same three characters, then switched two of them and ran through the second half with those three.

    Then come the artificial, glass walls blocking progress. You can't max your town or recruit everyone until after you've beaten the game. Why? Since there's no New Game Plus, there isn't a reason to keep playing.

    Speaking of which, the DLC weapons in the "Day One" edition has a bug where they won't show up until it's way too late. So that's another issue. Small issue, still an issue.

    Voice acting is piecemeal at best, instead of fully voice cutscenes ala World of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest Heroes.

    Again, it's not a bad game at all. But it could have been MUCH more than it ended up being. All it has going for it are the graphics.    … Expand

    25 hours in, I decided to stop here and write some reviews, because I won't progress any further in Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom.

    The first Ni No Kuni was one of my favorite games on PS3, also one of the best RPGs. It put you into a beautiful & believable world. The only ‘not-good-enough’ thing with that game is combat system. While in Ni No Kuni II, the combat was greatly    25 hours in, I decided to stop here and write some reviews, because I won't progress any further in Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom.

    The first Ni No Kuni was one of my favorite games on PS3, also one of the best RPGs. It put you into a beautiful & believable world. The only ‘not-good-enough’ thing with that game is combat system.

    While in Ni No Kuni II, the combat was greatly improved and overall well-received. It's a Action-RPG like, fast pace, hack n slash style gameplay. But the most important thing in a RPG, the story, and the way they tell a story, is lost.

    I can only guess that is because they changed the game director, and Studio Ghibli was out of Ni No Kuni II's production. Apparently they leaned too many resources to combat system and neglected the story and other details that make you believe it's a vivid world instead of just a make-believe open world.

    This reminds me of Dragon Age Inquisition, I was so excited for that one, because I am a big fan of DA:O. And turns out its combat was satisfying enough, and story sucks, just like Ni No Kuni II.

    So, overall, I recommend this game to those who doesn't really care about the story and all. If you are happy with good combat and beautiful cartoonic visuals, definitely try this game. But if you are a serious RPG fan, who value the story a lot, i suggest you avoid Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. Instead, try the first one.    … Expand

For instance, there is a skirmish mission where you control an army to defeat enemy's army. The mission is called "Criminal Capture: Bandit Gang" and I stuck at this ****er for an hour. It required you to kill enemy boss. The problem is, the enemy boss ran towards the exit like a mad man. You have to sprint to catch him but your stamina is limited. No to mention there are dozens of enemy in the road trying to stop you. If you made a bad decision to buy and play this stupid game, good luck on this mission because you have to beat it to get a trophy.    … Expand

    I love the first game, and somehow, the sequel is even better. The art-style and graphics are beautiful. The music is moving. Gameplay is perfect and improved from the first game. Love all the cute little creatures and looting is great! Halfway through and am slow-playing it, because I don't want it to end.

I'm currently just waiting for the gold in my capital to GENERATE itself, you heard right, i'm not actually doing anything, just watching netflix waiting for it to be done, just like Farmville. Good thing it has an easy platinum so I can trade it back to the shop when I'm finished with it. (edit: I'm down to my last trophy and let me just say this, after finishing everything so far I have 1300 balls and the trophy is to get 2000.     I truly enjoyed the game, though the ending fizzled, and I found myself skipping dialogue by the end (which I almost NEVER do).

    I don't think anyone interested will regret buying this game, but I don't think anyone will be missing out if they skip it either. I'm trading mine in now, without bothering with more than a few hours of post-game.    … Expand

Evan and Roland are my boys! The new fighting mechanics is fun and the kingdom building is interesting at times. The visuals are amazing in 4K HDR. The story is great! Like the world map, the battle system also received a downgrade from the original game. The game ditches the Pokemon-esque fighting system and moves towards something more in the vein of the Tales series, which is to say that it became for vanilla JRPG. This new system is clunky and unrewarding. The saving grace for the game is that it rewards you in other ways. The kingdom creator is the backbone, and what ultimately drives the player throughout NNK2. While not on the level of many city-simulation games, it is still a fun way to reward players for exploring within the game. Spoken dialogue is sparse, and the story really could have been great with more effort, but the ending still evokes emotion dispite all of this, something many games are unable to achieve.… Expand

    It’s a good game indeed. The places, the cities and everything is quite impressive and immersive. I don’t like the design of some playable characters, but I have to admit I purchased the season pass and I rarely do so on a game so quickly. 10 minutes into de game you already know this is not an ordinary rpg, it is a piece of art.

Combat is fun and smooth, similar to Persona 5 but only with real time fighting, sadly the game is just too easy, it's almost impossible to die and every fight is so short that i can't fully enjoy. Almost perfect combat mechanics hidden somewhere in the game with no difficulty settings. Deeper narrative and more balanced gameplay could make this game contender to the game of the year awards, but it is how it is...… Expand

    If you don't mind endless fetch quests broken up with a little kingdom management and some eye-roll moments at the enemies, I'd pick this game up on sale.    … Expand

The downsides is that the connections and personalities of playable characters are not "shaped" enough. The game is very easy, one simple fix for me is halving the damage of the characters and reducing the damage of enemies byFlawless in graphics! If you're looking for a pretty RPG Ni No Kuni is for you. The scenarios and atmosphere is very well built and soundtrack is very immersive. Enjoy. Then the music, it's well composed but so badly timed I had to mute it. It is NOT open world. After Persona 5 it's the most linear game I've played in my life. It has a silly opening tutorial and over explains everything. "You are now using the spell.", "You just used the spell", "The spell executed fine". Click X all the time. It's a strong 6, where most of its positive is because of the charm from Ghibli.

    Basically it's a very charming sub-par mobile game on a big screen TV. That's it. Makes me wanna give up playing games all together. But in general, a very mediocre game with a lot of charm that'd fit perfectly for a mobile phone.    … Expand

    This game world is absolutely beautiful and the Studio Ghibli inspired charm still shines from its bright animation and graphics (I have yet to see any "hand drawn" animated story sections and do miss those). The music is incredible thanks to the amazing Joe Hisaishi. Plus there are plenty of new aspects to the game that give those that played the last one something fresh. So that's it, the perfect Studio Ghibli inspired action rpg kingdom builder with charm.

    So with all that going for it why am I having so much trouble engaging in this game. In the Wrath of the White Witch I immediately felt something for the characters but this time not so much. I was invested in Oliver's journey even before he gets to the Other World. I am having a hard time discovering who I am supposed to care about in this game after 10 hours and I do hope that changes as I am still having fun with the game. It is not by any means a bad game, in fact it's a wonderful game. Maybe I just need to Journey farther to find its heart.    … Expand

    I haven't felt so warm inside playing a video game since a long time. Spending my time in this game world is both a delightful and fun experience. Yes, the combat is a little on the easier side, but after hours upon hours of playtime, it's still very fun.

    From the characterizations to storytelling, everything is so beautifully charming, something a lot of games these days are missing.     There is Witcher 3 in this game. There is FInal Fantasy VII in this game. There is Pokemon in this game. There is Zelda in this game. There is Tales in this game.

    In fact, for the first time in a while, I am actually having as much fun with this game as I first had with both Witcher 3 and FFVII when I played them in their own time... that, despite the fact that this game is not geared towards the same audience - those two other games are not necessarily for children... as we well know. This one, however, is.

    The most important factor, I think, which truly amazed me was how important all the characters are. I had become disappointed with character heavy JRPGs as of late, especially when you could easily tell stuff like, "Oh... that one with the boob physics is only there for that," or, "The dude with the creepy personality, licking his knives and sh*t, is only there for that." Basically, characters that don't need to be in the game.

    And then there's this game. The game that was allowed time to be developed because the first one sort of failed. The game that will probably make the first one a "hidden gem" and "collectible classic" now, and will skyrocket the price of an unopened copy upwards of $150 in a few years. The game that shows us, the same way Witcher 3 and Zelda BotW showed us... that when you have time to make a game and don't rush it, all the planned elements CAN be there. The game that, thankfully, will only disappoint people who don't like JRPGs. Which is exactly how it should be for all major releases.    … Expand

    I gave Wrath of the White Witch 91/100. Revenant Kingdom, despite being slightly inferior to the original, still earns a solid 88/100. Lovely animation, fun and addictive gameplay and wonderful score strongly make up for the lack of difficulty as well as lack of abundant voice acting. Nevertheless, the story remained compelling enough to read through text boxes most of the way. Im justI gave Wrath of the White Witch 91/100.     I have picked this game as my enter to JRPG. And it was not bad choice at all. Very complex game with RPG core along with simple RTS battles and quite complex building of kingdom. Not very hard. Nice visual, great music And very addictive gameplay. It will catch you and not let go until you Wil finished it

    I loved Ni No Kuni 1 and was even more surprised, that Ni No Kuni 2 was able to reach, if not even surpass, my expectations. An Amazing piece of gaming, which every JRPG fan should play!

    Ni No Kuni 2 is a breath taking and pleasant sequel to the first game. The art style is so colorful and the game play is fun even though some people disliked the changes from the first. This is one of those games where you can play 3 hours straight and still want to keep going just for the next surprise that is waiting for you.     It really feels like a ghibli game in every aspect.

    Now for what my fellow reviewers complain about.
    Ugly character? What?
    Fetch quests? I've only encountered a few of those in side quests.
    Too much text? Ya'll never heard of jrpgs have you?

They need to add a difficulty option and that would fix thisIm only a few hours into the game but its pretty great.     A modern masterpiece of storytelling that can transport you into a magical mystical world. Level-5 has brought it's years of honing their craft to bear with Ni No Kuni II and it shines! At a dynamic 4k w/ HDR on the Pro it's jaw dropping but it's so much more than that. Loose yourself in this modern masterpiece you will not be disappointed.

    What a beautiful game! I loved the first Ni No Kuni and they captured the same atmosphere in this game. The gameplay is great: fluent battles and perfect controls. The game looks absolutely stunning and the surroundings are varied. A musthave for fans of the genre and if you've played and loved the first game, you should definitely play this one.

    There is too much to say about this game that makes it great. The bright and colorful world and cast of characters. The battles feel great and responsive. I love the Tactics Tweaker and managing the kingdom to make sure it is coming along the way I want it. I want to go into greater detail but then this review might become way too long. If you have or plan on buying a PS4 this is a must buy.

    Ni No Kuni II is truly a tale, deliberately naïve and full of colorful characters. The combination of different genres, JRPG, management and RTS, works well, as each style is interwoven with the others.
