It's simply time for EA to lose this license.

I've been playing NHL games for the better part of 20 years now and this is probably my last one. After NHL 18 I swore I would no longer pay full price for the NHL series, so I purchased 19 half off on Black Friday. I think I may never purchase an EA NHL game again. (Note: this whole review is for offline single-player, as I consider online multiplayer to be nothing more than a vehicle for microtransactions)

It sucks. Every single problem from previous iterations returns, essentially nothing is better, and on top of it some things are even worse. They touted the skating in this game as a big step forward and a lot of 'journalists' mention it in their reviews: don't be fooled, It still feels incredibly fake and arcade-ish, only now it's faster. That's not better, it's just different. You still get stuck on AI players who are playing their perfect 1 on 1 coverage (more on that later), and no matter how great a jump you get, you can't really get a breakaway because of the hilarious joke of a catchup mechanic the devs put into every NHL game that gives a speed boost to a defender that got caught. Turning is no longer like skating through mud, instead it's like defying physics itself to magically stop on a dime from a full sprint and then be going full speed the other way in two strides. It's very artificial.

Have no fear though! Your teammate AI will never be useful enough for the new skating to really impact the game anyways. Blowing down the wing and cutting back into the middle of the ice (you know, like a good hockey player) will see you rewarded by the stunning vision of your teammates driving themselves.... right into the wall. Or, if you particularly angered the hockey gods, your teammate will instead come to a dead stop right in the middle of the ice... you know, right where you're driving. Because going to the net is not a thing in NHL and hasn't been for years. I assume it's because the devs are aware that their goaltenders are immediately blindfolded the instant a single opposing player passes their line of sight, but either way it's not hockey.

Which is honestly the main issue with NHL 19. It's not hockey. At no point in time will you be tricked into thinking you're playing hockey on your favorite team. Or hell, any team. Your defenders don't defend, your forwards don't play lanes or take up assignments, and the offensive zone is essentially you running around with 1 guy while 4 of your AI teammates see just how frustrated you can get with them being in useless positions. Playing in Be a Pro is just an exercise in futility. Your teammates won't play like real hockey players, so no matter how hard you try to play 'correctly' you'll never be rewarded. The game will only reward you for ignoring your teammates and doing everything yourself. Want to pass it to a Defenseman and drive the net to screen? Tough, they'll just pass it right back to you no matter how bad the positioning. Want to set up a nice 2 on 1 with your winger? Tough, they won't take up the lane they should take, which leaves you to not only carry the puck but ALSO fix the lanes your AI friend won't do on his own. Want to set up a nice Power Play? Sucks to be you, because your AI friends are pylons when they shouldn't be, and rabid mice when they should be standing still. It's like the people who developed the AI haven't actually seen a hockey game in person but heard about it from a friend, so decided to write the AI based on that secondhand knowledge. Don't worry though, none of these issues is of particular effect on the opposing team, which meshes well, benefits from tilted ice when you're winning, and seems to have rudimentary mind control powers that force your own teammates AI to seemingly stop working at random intervals so they can skate circles around them.

Speaking of Power Plays... what... the...*(@&. Did no one playtest this before it went live? I don't think i've played a game where I've been under 8 penalties, with most being much higher. And that's with penalties turned down. I had 17 penalties in my very first game before I turned them down. Seriously... I mean... I don't even have words for it. This is not hockey. NHL Hitz was closer to real hockey than NHL 19. This is a game that should get a license taken away from a company.

I could go into other things, like the fact that shooting is still terrible, dekeing might as well be removed from the game, and that Franchise mode is still the worst possible version of ESHM shoehorned into the game; but the simple fact is, this is not a good hockey game. This wouldn't even have been a good hockey game ten years ago. The franchise needs to die so someone with skill, talent, and actual care for the game can take it up. Until then I suppose I'll have to get my fill of hockey from watching the real thing, because this game will be going back where it belongs: a store shelf where it can languish in obscurity.

    Worst. Nhl. Ever.

If you are a fan of EASHL, dont even bother.
This game is a glitch goal fest. Nothing that ressemble's a real hockey game...just the same goals over and over again.
Its frustrating and it gets boring real fast.
This is going to be the last EA sports NHL I ever played.

The EA ice tilt momentum pity goal hocus pocus is back in HUT, the psychologically manipulative mode aimed towards maximizing revenue through micro transactions. I know how to counter the programming to win, but I have started to ask myself "what is the point of playing this rigged carnival game?"

EASHL is completely broken. The drop in system does not work. If you do manage to find a full lobby there is a 50/50 chance a dressing room error will occur. No one asked for an outdoor rink in the mountains yet that is what EA decided to deliver rather than a matchmaking system that actually works.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. Go on twitter, reddit and the EA NHL forum and you will see nothing but negative comments and people asking for refunds. What you will not see anywhere is an appropriate response from EA and the devs regarding these issues and their plan to fix it.

The online connection issues are not solved either. Sure they added a new skating engine but the game play is only as good as the connection allows it to be.

The menus are still sluggish and tedious to navigate. You have to hit 23494 button clicks to get anything done.

THE MOST INCOMPETENT DEV TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF GAMING

The only positive thing I can say is about online VS which is decently fun as long as the connection is in the green.

Seems that every time they try to adjust the game mechanics they ruin the game more and more:

It was refreshing that the poke-check spamming was finally addressed -- But no that is gone now.

At the beginning the game felt extremely responsive, even if a bit fast -- Now that is gone also. The players sure pivot a lot faster now, but other than that you're once again trying to skate in tar. I'm not sure if it is just that, but the game sure feels WAY LESS responsive than it did

Tackling was back for a while -- Then it went away again. I dare you to try and tackle an AI player when it is crossing the blue line... You can't, there is once again some invisible barrier between you and the puck carrier, and you're just pushing him on..

The sound track has a few awful songs which DO PLAY OFTEN so I've been forced to turn the music of in-game.

They updated the menus... They're somewhat faster now, but other than that hell-of-a-lot worse. How can you waste so much screen estate and hide all the relevant and interesting information!?!?

And the commentary is still the same. I mean EXACTLY THE SAME. It's not that it is extremely bad. It's just that I'm extremely fed up with it.

Also as I've read Be A Pro is still a dead game form...

...aaand HUT is even more money-grabbing than ever. The players you currently can get are pretty much max 85ovr, average being something like 80...

The new 1’s mode has no take backs so you just have to sit in front of the net and grab others rebounds. Scoring seems less reliant on skill than ever now. I’ve realized my best shot at winning, especially online, is just to throw it on from up top and crash for rebounds and just keep shooting as much as I can. Setting up a shot seems to have little effect on the chance of it going in to where you’re better off just getting as many opportunities as possible regardless of how good a chance it is. They also seem to reward people for struggling with pity goals. They also advertised legends in franchise mode as a feature, and not only do they still not have them available, but their current rosters are still missing tons of regular players even after the October update(more than a month after release). I also don’t understand why every sports game made by either EA or 2k allows shared rosters, but NHL doesn’t. If they won’t allow give us the correct rosters more than a month after release, at least allow us to download from others like every other sports video game. The skating is a bit better though. One of the coolest additions to this year's game is "World of Chel." Although I still cringe at the name, the new hub brings a bit of freshness to game modes in NHL 19. To enter World of Chel, you create a playable character that can be dropped into a variety of game modes, the popular EASHL online team play mode, the arcade-style NHL Threes mode that was introduced last year, and an awesome new mode called NHL Ones.Playing Ones ( 1v1v1 free-for-all where you race to outscore your other two opponents on the ice ) may bring experienced NHL gamers back to the days of NHL 2006 and the very similar "Free For All" game mode. Either way, it's very welcome addition to NHL's collection of game modes, as it's an addictive and fun way to hone your one-on-one game.Along with World of Chel comes pond hockey venues and a massive upgrade in the player customization department. Users can outfit their playable characters in a wide variety of clothing and equipment, ranging from wacky jackets, sweatshirts and pants to NHL team-branded merchandise and jerseys. You'll rarely see two online characters take to the ice in the same loadout.

The customization and breadth of drop-in options brings a bit more depth to the gameplay options and that's a good thing.

For offline players, Franchise Mode appears to be largely similar to the product rolled out last year, but with one exception.
EA Sports has overhauled the mode's scouting system from top-to-bottom. When you take over a franchise, you're tasked with assembling a team of 20 scouts that will evaluate both pro and amateur talent, meaning the quality of your scouting will likely affect the quality of drafting, trading, and free agency decisions. I didn't get too much of a chance to play around with it (at least not over a long period of time ), but it's something that may be valued by those who invest enough time into franchise mode to play across multiple seasons.

The development team at EAintroduced a brand new Real Player Motion so the gameplay feels alot cleaner than previous years iterations, crossovers, stopping and they added an insanely robust scouting system in franchise mode, and added over 200 NHL Legends and a bunch of other details and improvements to the game. Obviously, the reason why (and it is clear as day) as to why so many people say the game is the same as last year is because it looks the same. The presentation (and a reviewer who had played a previous iteration of NHL games since NHL 14 or 15 would know this lol) is pretty much the exact same. The same NBC style layout, the same announcers (albeit they don't seem as annoying this year, definitely not as much repetition) and even though there have been minor upgrades to the crowd and how they react it's fairly similar to years past. Would be nice to see some major improvements when it comes to presentation. The two main announcers for the game are already not scheduled to be in the NHL2020 (you can research for yourself it was announced earlier in the year) so now seems the perfect time for EA to step it up. Bring in some Canadian announcers. Give us some intermission shows or clips whether it's pre-game, post game or like I said during intermission. Also, during whistle stoppage bring in some more commentary about players or teams on a more personal level. I haven't played the Be a Pro mode yet but they definitely need to add more depth to it. Maybe make it like NBA 2K19 MyCareer (Not Madden Long shot lol). Where you can customize your player, have an actual storyline. Have us interact with known hockey reporters after a game etc. Cutscenes at the draft and when we get selected. Being drafted is the biggest day for young hockey players so they need to make us the players feel like it is. They could even go as far as implementing this new world of CHEL into the Be a Pro mode. If they created a HUB world with outdoor rinks and you can bring your player on the ponds and play against other players online. The stage is yours EA. 2019 is good but not great with alot of under the hood improvements. I'll hope 2020 is the year the real magic falls on the ice. Score: 8.0/10

At first, nothing could be scored, it reached the shootout. But when I updated the lineup and there were players with a total of 81, as well as 4 synergies at once, things went uphill. The main thing is not to give up. By testing, you can raise a lot of coins, although it would be easier as before to go every day and get 1,250 coins, and not opening lootboxes with 100 coins. What would I like from the new part? The new engine probably, but frostbite seems to me at the bottom. But it's not for me to decide this. I would also like to see goalkeepers take away from punches, as in NHL15 on the PS3. The same KHL for some reason no, at least they made the Russian league without a license, as Konami does in PES. On the other hand, I play only in the Ultimate Team and there these weather players will not do. It's sad to see low sales on Vgchatz

This game is the worst NHL game I have ever played. The poke checking being a tripping penalty half the time kills the gameplay for me. It forces you to try to lay back more and go for more hits. But guys will just get by you.. Poke checking will rarely ever lead to a trip in a real game. It kills this game. Some people like it but I will never buy another game that is like this. Franchise mode should be the main focus.. And I couldn't even make a trade on easy trade difficulty.. This is by far the hardest NHL game to make trades.. Also I tried to make my GM's name "Steve Yzerman" and it wouldn't work because the name was too long. What garbage this game is... I just played NHL 20 Beta and it's more of the same with worse passing.. I have played NHL 15, 17, 18, 19 and the 20 Beta on my PS4. And in my opinion NHL 15 has the best gameplay overall. But NHL 07 and 08 are my favourite NHL games to date from what I remember. It's been awhile but the older games were better for sure. Expand

I just read metacritic’s negative reviews to see the consensus. I do agree with some of the negative reviews, but to think about it, when would NHL-game be perfect?

Of this new I know the season mode and actual playing, which has improved; skating and shooting, playing against computer is more realistic than ever, there are no ”forced” goals by AI, it’s a fair win-lose-draw, which feels real compared to previous titles, difficulty level is just spot on. I played season mode in 18 for a while just before 19 and though there are no major changes, minor adjustments to AI behaviour in my opinion makes it a 9+.

If you like NHL and hockey, I definitely recommend this, playing only gets more real if you put on skates and head to ice to shoot some real pucks.

I quit buying nhl for a while but it's been a while so I bought this on psn for a deep discount. I lasted two days. This games major flaw remains that being it is not balanced by statistics of your players but rather gameplay tuners. You have a better chance beating an all star setting mode with a terrible team than a competitive team with high overall players. The game still has tilt giving you huge advantages to passing, skating, positioning etc if you are the huge underdog and punishing you with all kinds of unclean gameplay if you have earned an excellent overall team. Expect that team to have errant passing, terrible skating, positioning and on and on forcing you to cheese the software. EA has made this problem slower to surface as earning players are now harder to get which delays this problem but the problem remains the game is controlled by tuning and the better the players you get which you want to play cuz they are your favourite nhl stars, the more frustrating the game becomes through actual lack of control. This is a disc where the longer you play the worse the gameplay gets...same story every year and EA has only fixed the game 5% over 5 years. Thumbs down from my standpoint, again. Expand

EA **** the bed once again.

And the ice-tilt IS real. 5th straight game that I've lost a game after leading 4-0 during the first 2 periods. Are you kidding me?

Still, EA prefers to focus on HUT and "improving" gameplay tuners. The only way you can IMPROVE THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE is by either actually make a new game instead of recycling the same bull crap since 2015, or by giving a refund to every one to spent their hard-earned money on this garbage. The only game that I get mad, instead of having actual fun. I've spent my money to get a fully working product, not some pre-alpha crap. Ridiculous.

There are huge problems with this game, especially in the BaP system, that have generally been ignored by the gaming reviewers out there. There are some big improvements to the shooting and general play, but the issues with BaP make it really frusturating.

    1) Can't change your number. 2) Can't play anything other than the position you first choose. 3) Penalties are ridiculous. 4)

    5) Can't change how you train if you select auto-trainer. Which makes sense, except if you click it by accident, you can never go back.
    6) It will take you a very long time to become decently rated as your player progression is painfully slow.

I have not played an EA hockey game since NHL 16 and to no surprise, It feels and looks very much the same. there are definitely additions but they seem very minor and just pasted on the same version of the game. A.I. is terrible to play against and with. Online play laggy. For sure the worst sports game on the market.

All of your teammates think they are spider-man flying up and down the ice, hogging the puck constantly only to turn it over and have your defense miss a big hit as the other team scores easily. No one knows how to pass (saucer or backwards), its like playing with a bunch of 2 year old lemmings that just want to fall to their death. On top of that, I'm only level 42 (non tiered) and I haven't come across one teammate or opponent that is actual good/unselfish, and some of these guys are maxed out!! ( thrid tier level 50 ). It's truly amazing that even the best rated online club players are still quite terrible and unaware of simple situations. Everything alright there in Canada? Seems like they've gotten dumber, pretty sad. Anyways, everything else in the game is fun, but the online base is truly the dregs of the planet. Expand

Very fun game with the updated skating but it is still bugged a bit. That's what lowers the score since after so many years the devs should have most of it figured out. The multiplayer experience is very too and it doesn't feel like a pay to win with the packs you can buy in the HUT mode. Singleplayer is fun too, new mode of ''chel'' is interesting. Some features just don't have to be that realistic even though I understand it's supposed to be a simulation.

Regarding the game modes, apart from online, I've always spent a lot of hours playing Be a GM - now franchise mode. In there, it's a huge improvement, I really like playing it. The new scouting system seems more realistic and is more reliable - you have much more control over the scouting. I just feel like it takes a huge amount of time. There are some things which I absolutely don't understand - f.e. why EA can't allow you to change your jersey number in Be a Pro. Such a simple feature, that was included in the previous gen.

Online modes - I really like the CHEL, it's a really good competitive feature.

Overall, it's a good hockey game, there are few bugs, for which is EA known for as well as in FIFA, but I'd recommend it to every hockey fan. Maybe apart from those who have NHL 18 at home.

Kaleidoscope of available modes guarantees that everyone interested in hockey will easily find a way to enjoy NHL 19, whether they crave 15 minutes of accessible fun or prefer to dig into statistics and play whole seasons. Learning basics is easy, but if you want more (e.g. success in online modes) you will need patience and a lot of practice, as controls are deep and some tricks require uncommon skill. [12/2018, p.72]
