Nero stays true to its billing as an interactive novel, and while there are plenty of hiccups in nearly every facet of the game, none of them are particularly experience-ruining.

As a story-focused first-person adventure game, NERO is quite remarkable. It’s surreal, heartfelt, bittersweet, and thought-provoking, and that should have been more than enough to carry it without the need for shoehorned-in “gameplay”. As it is, it’s a very good game, but it would have been so much better if it hadn’t tried so hard to avoid the “walking simulator” criticism and just ran with its strengths.

A walking simulator that drops you into an intriguing story, set in a wonderful world and scored with beautiful music, but still a walking simulator - and one with illogical puzzles and occasionally tricky controls at that.

A little below the technical standards of this generation, and not so brilliant in terms of puzzles, N.E.R.O. manages to narrate an intimate and devastating tragedy, in a very touching way.

An interesting concept of narrative videogame that forgets that it is a videogame. The best aspect is its beautiful and colorful artistic design.

N.E.R.O. fails at generating an exciting or mentally challenging experience, but it really doesn’t try to. This visually stunning title places a great emphasis on its narrative, which is both uplifting and devastating – you’ll be thinking about this one for a long time afterwards.

A narrative experience that's only suitable for a very specific audience that be delighted from start to finish while avoiding their obvious shortcomings.

A visually beguiling though relaxing explorative adventure, N.E.R.O fails to properly capitalise on its unique setting as its simple puzzles, brief duration, and lack of replayability ultimately damages its long-term appeal.

N.E.R.O. intrigues as an interactive visual novel, but it fails in its attempts to be a game. The puzzles here are laughably easy, and they subsequently get in the way of the storytelling. There are some beautiful cutscenes and an interesting story here, but they're too often impeded by unenjoyable gameplay.

NERO is not fun. NERO might have a powerful story. NERO might look pretty. But NERO is not fun. Nor enjoyable. Or engaging. Or really anything that may have driven me to want to keep playing.

N.E.R.O. relies on philosophical lessons in order to create its story, but in terms of gameplay it feels too clumsy and simple.

    N.E.R.O. Nothing Ever Remains Obscure
    A strangely calming adventure.
It’s so hard to talk about NERO without spoiling it, so I’m not going to go into story details even a little bit. ..
I will only say this is a story about acceptance…
If you’re looking for awesome gameplay, don’t look here... this isn’t what Nero is about
the magic here is in the journey and story telling...
The atmosphere in this game really is perfect excluding 1 on the 4 chapters...
This is a quote unquote walking simulator with light puzzle elements thrown in here…
As you explore the beautiful levels with calming ambience, you’ll run into pieces of pictures and puzzles that completing them will give more insight into the story…
It’s a real joy exploring these 4 levels so these collectibles do not feel like a chore at all to search for…
The puzzles in this game are for the most part very simple and involve mainly pressure pads and throwing an orb of blue light to activate a switch… you’ll even get a companion early on to help with a couple puzzles throughout your journey… and a handful of these puzzles can actually be completely skipped… but if you want the most out of this 2 hour game, it’s definitely worth seeking all 29 out…
I will say there were probably about 4 puzzles that I had to look up a solution to... not because I couldn’t figure it out. .but because I had no idea what the puzzle was asking me to do in the first place…
which unfortunately does break the immersion the rest of the game did such a great job at placing me into…
But the story makes it all worth it…
it’s just as beautiful and mysterious as the rest of the world and even brought a few tears to my eyes..
NERO may not have the best puzzles... but the puzzles do their job at keeping the pace…
And if there’s one thing NERO does have, it’s one of the most heartwarming experiences of the year.
I give NERO Nothing Ever Remains Obscure
