In short, NEO The World Ends With You is massive. It’s a grand, modern epic with impeccable writing and almost as impeccable style that’s got as much heart as it does twists and turns in the plot. This is easily one of the year’s finest RPGs.

NEO: The World Ends With You is brimming with excitement. The combat is so good, and the various mechanics all work well together. The soundtrack is superb as well, with visuals that never grow old.

NEO: The World Ends With You retains the freshness, uniqueness and stylish nature of the original game, but at the same time reinvents itself without forgetting the complexity and tons of content usually found in the JRPG genre. We're once again before a true gem.

NEO: The World Ends With You is the sequel we’ve been waiting for. While its new cast of characters have a lofty legacy to live up to, they manage to cement themselves as equally memorable even if their own journey begins to intersect with one we know so well. Combat falls victim to repetition, yet the ideas that surround it are substantial enough that such flaws are easy to forgive. If you’re after a vast JRPG adventure, it’s time to surrender yourself to the underground and never look back. TWEWY is back, and I hope it’s here to stay.

A banger of a sequel that slightly fumbles the last verse. That said, it’s still a full-on earworm that’s getting heavy rotation on our Summer In Shibuya playlist. [Issue#5, p.72]

Fourteen years ago, The World Ends With You stood out for its great art direction, original battle system and a great and unexpected story. Today the sequel improves the technical aspect, but the battle system is simpler, the narrative twists are no longer unexpected and the characters are not too deep. It's great to be back in Shibuya, just don't expect something as surprising and fresh as the first game.

NEO: The World Ends With You gives players a tremendous soundtrack and a ton of content, and once the combat clicks, it's a genuinely good time. However, that comes with the caveat that players have to invest roughly 10 hours before the game really starts to be fun, and then they still have to deal with its repetitiveness. So as long as fans can put up with those issues, they will get a lot of game time out of NEO: The World Ends With You.

The voice acting is superb in every aspect, it's definitely a change from just reading and hearing some voice clips here and there in the previous game. Also, you won't find another game that makes grinding as fun as it is here too! Expand

They all vary in style of use and can be used in many ways. The pins are assigned to each button of the controller the bumpers, or the side buttons are all used in this game. The gameplay is very unique and could be played in many styles whether you're a casual gamer who just wants to button smash, or you're somebody who masters each pin and uses techniques for each boss considering the bosses each have their own weakness like any other JRPG. The gameplay DOES get tedious at moments with some bosses feeling like sponges even on higher difficulties, but the combat truly does shine on bosses that require a lot of thinking. The battles can get pretty crazy since at one point you will be fighting with 6 characters (6 pins) but it's always fun.

You advance through the story by doing various tasks throughout each day, some challenging and some very simple; sometimes you'll be met with a quiz, and other days it'll be a battle royal free for all to see who gets the most points. It's a great system that I think works very well for this game, though some days are very tedious and a lot of clicking through dialogue to do a basic "puzzle" which Neo has a lot of. I'd say the game picks up about 5-10 hours in and it becomes a very fun game to play just for the story alone. the good days are good, and the bad days are bad. There isn't really an in-between.

You'll also have to collect up on "Threads" which act as HP, Defense, and various of other things it's a really cool system that I found myself enjoying a lot more than I should have; each thread has a special ability that could make your battles easier with a tough restriction or vice versa. There is also a food system where you eat food to acquire stats, since leveling only increases your overall HP which in lot of instances is useless since you will be dropping your level a lot to get some of the more rare pins.

Sound: I believe there comes a time where a game deserves it's own soundtrack section, and Neo: TWEWY is one of those games with a killer soundtrack. It's score will have you jamming your head, or even emotional, it's songs are all over the place from Rock, to Metal, to J-POP there is sure to be a song that you like inside of this game. They really did a great job at fleshing out all of them with almost ALL of them having vocals (some returning from the previous entry game) I was truly impressed with this games music.

The voice acting is VERY good in this game, with a lot of the cast implementing very good emotions that even made me tear up a few times they all did amazing with it, a lot of them being first time voice actors, they should be very proud of their work.

Final Verdict: Neo The World Ends With You swings in with an interesting story, but get's held back by some of the more tedious missions, The characters truly do make the game memorable, alongside the wonderful soundtrack in it, there is also a very strong post-game where you will be defeating bonus bosses, or collecting pins to 100% the game (which is very grindy) the cutscenes are also very beautifully animated with a comic-book cartoon style that is very refreshing. I think that the game is 100% worth a pick-up but WILL be benefitted by if you played the previous entry (which is currently only on mobile and switch at the time of this review) but can be played without it.

It brings a fresh cast of characters, and lives off of the previous entries nostalgia. A great game to be played (JUST TAKE BREAKS)
