    The most realist basketball game ever. I’ve been playing 2K series since 2K06 which makes 15 years and I agree that this game ain’t easy. If you are struggling with new pro stick aiming function on shooting, go on a setup and do not use this function.

    This game is an upgrade from NBA 2K20, the gameplay has been upgraded and they have finally found a way to make the skill gap bigger with at what rate do the shots go in and so you need to have excellent release if you want to make jump shots consistently.     What disappointed me the most is that there is no Create a Legend Mode and the lack of improvements for MyLeague and MyGM. I also am not happy that you can't even transfer MyCareer. But overall, NBA2K21 is a solid game that will bring in fun for Basketball Fans.

    Okay, where to begin. First of all I am a massive fanboy of 2k and have been buying since the goat 2k11. I have noticed the substantial dip in quality and lack of updates from the 2k franchise for some time now. I remember the days when 2k11 2k12 and 2k13 were such fantastic values in terms of gameplay and overall content compared to other sports games at the time. Now it seems that inOkay, where to begin. First of all I am a massive fanboy of 2k and have been buying since the goat 2k11. I have noticed the substantial dip in quality and lack of updates from the 2k franchise for some time now. I remember the days when 2k11 2k12 and 2k13 were such fantastic values in terms of gameplay and overall content compared to other sports games at the time. Now it seems that in order to play a AAA sports game you have to deal with the now-greedy companies of EA and 2k. This is simply something one must come to terms with when buying each year's new edition.
    I personally have not purchased a 2k since 2k17, and I thought that 2017 did a phenomenal job with the dribble mechanics and the shot meter. I did get to play 2k20 for awhile with gamepass and had an enjoyable time on MyTeam. Yet would not have considered paying over 20$ for that game. I completely faded 2k18 and 2k19 as they just looked not fun to play when compared to 2k17 gameplay.

    This year, I didn't know what to expect but I was getting absurdly impatient and wanting to jump in to a new sports game. and after witnessing the **** show that EA released with Madden 21 it became apparent that it was 2k or bust. I decided to preorder the game in hopes of developing a dope MyTeam over the next few months. My expectations were tempered but I did at least want to enjoy the gameplay and be able to grind towards my favorite players.

    I have had the game for 3 days now, and I can say that I am mostly pleased with the entire package of the game. There still is quite a lot of content and ways to play the game. Anyone here is likely not new 2k so you know exactly what to expect in terms of gamemodes.

    Let's talk about what is causing such a division in reviews from this community. THE SHOOTING.
    Yes it is definitely true that the dribbling and shooting mechanics have been tampered with. I feel like in the long run these will feel normal and potentially even preferred. I know that I had a few rage moments during my first few hours of play, seeing as the dribble moves and shooting combos take time to master and do not feel intuitive. The shooting is much much much less forgiving and it will take practicing your favorite players releases and figuring out their hot spots as you will have to run picture perfect plays to get them open looks from outside or set enough picks to blow by the defender for a layup. Layups and shooting in the paint is overpowered while outside shooting takes immense skill and patience. Get it?

    Yes the skill gap has gotten a substantialy steeper and yes the CPU players play like Monstars from Space Jam, but I truly believe that overtime a lot of these issues will get smoothed out and players will adjust to the new mechanics and whatever gamestyle that 2k seems to want to reward. I am not sure why 2k would want to punish the casual gamer, but this game is built for serious hoopers and experienced 2kers. Which honestly is fine with me, I love technical and skill driven games.

    All I know is that I can take the good with the bad seeing as its so early in the release, and I can say that I have had a ton of fun with the new MyCareer story and always love MyTeam. I actually enjoy the challenge of shooting and it really allows people with legit basketball IQ to thrive. When you do dominate it feels earned and its something to savor when you go on a shooting streak. This may not be popular opinion but I am fine with struggling upfront to learn new mechanics if it makes the gameplay more balanced and enjoyable in the long run.    … Expand

    I think this is a big step forward from 2k20 which was awful. They improved passing not pass targeting though. The neighborhood/beach has a nice revamped design. Myteam has the new game mode which is pretty cool and feels nice and has a new good look and feel. Sadly myleague is pretty much the same but at this point that's expected. The Mycareer story is ok but better then last year andI think this is a big step forward from 2k20 which was awful. They improved passing not pass targeting though.     I want to talk about the development team for this generations version of the game, (PS4 & X box one). The developer only had half a team working on that while for next gen they had Two or Three teams working on it.

    Game play: The overall game play remains the same as it did in NBA 2K20, it feels more like a patch than a new game with some minor differences. First thing that is new is the shot meter which I feel like is a downgrade compared to 2K19 and 2K20 shot meter; it feel more like an arcade version which is rather disappointing you do have the option of turning it off though. Not only is the shot meter disappointing but the shooting is not as good as it was in 2K19 and 2K20 what I mean by that is it does not feel as good as it did in previous instalments, the only thing 2K added was new shot animations and more pie charts for your my player build. The game play itself is solid though but unfortunately it’s the only thing that is solid on this generations version.

    Controls: The controls are the same with a few minor tweaks such as the aiming stick for the shooting, which is really annoying because we did not need that in the first place it can mess up the ball handling. I myself went in to the controls and made them classic by taking the aiming stick off and using the right stick for the handling. The classic controls are what work if something is not broken 2K please do not fix it.

    Modes: There are many modes in this years installation of the NBA2K franchise, my favourite to this day is still my career. In this years my career you start off in high school and make you way through college and in to the NBA which is something I have wanted for a long time in a career mode.

    My Team: This year really is no different when it comes to this mode accept you can transfer your team and the virtual currency over to the next generation.

    The Neighbourhood: The neighbourhood got a huge cosmetic overhaul but that is all it got, it still takes about 10 minutes to get an actual game going, mostly people just stand around and it is incredibly frustrating, but that is OK I still enjoy it when I do get a game.

    NBA 2k21 just feels like a patch from NBA 2K20 in some areas it is good some areas is bad, but it is still fun.

    I think this game will be a little more worth to play on next gen, I am upset about MyCareer not being able to transfer over to next gen, but I guess that's how it is. Gaining VC fast isn't a problem if you like to play 5 minute quarter games and all. I would say that this is a down year, 2k20 may have been better than this. I'll still get this game maybe, but I would look forward to 2k22

A lot of the beauty in 2k20 came from the immersion that gets built through the news conferences, interviews, and seeing your player interact with the team.     It’s it a pretty good improvement from the last game don’t expect any major improvements but is still better than 2K20 but I can’t say it’s a good game necessarily it does have micro transactions and my team is still Basically a casino and the shooting is impossible but don’t be expected for a major game hopefully we will see that in 2K21 next Gen

    One issue I do have, however, is the inconsistency with shooting. It was pretty bad in 2k20 but has becomes even worse in this iteration. When you make shots vs when you don’t makes absolutely no sense. You miss sitters inside the rim when you’re timing is perfect and you’re barely covered, but make a 3 pointer on the fly when your timing is off and you’re far more covered.     I'm going to give 2k Sports the benefit of the doubt here, NBA 2k is honestly better than Madden NFL 21 and other sports games out there despite not being the most popular sport in the world. But other than that, this game doesn't have anything new here to offer (besides MyCareer and the new Neighborhood). MyLeague and MyGM are still the same but nothing new is added. The gameplay feelsI'm going to give 2k Sports the benefit of the doubt here, NBA 2k is honestly better than Madden NFL 21 and other sports games out there despite not being the most popular sport in the world. But other than that, this game doesn't have anything new here to offer (besides MyCareer and the new Neighborhood). MyLeague and MyGM are still the same but nothing new is added. The gameplay feels much like the same except the shot meter is way different and much harder to master. There also new historic teams added including the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors and 2018-19 Toronto Raptors, but there are some players on the historic team's missing. So overall, this game is pretty much the same as last year. I only recommend this game if you are a hardcore NBA fan and want to play some MyPark with your friends or if you want to play with your favorite NBA team online or in MyCareer. Or just you pass on this version and wait for the PS5/ XBOX Series X/ XBOX Series S comes out.… Expand

This game has depth and it looks like they do care about the game but there just isn’t much more innovation they can do with this generation of consoles.     what a load of tosh, gameplay is horrific and laggy even with fast Internet, alot of people are complaining about gameplay being delayed, lots of people are also getting error codes for different game modes so they can't play even after doing some troubleshooting steps, game needs to be better, shooting is terrible and hardly anyone can get any greens in neighbourhood, sort it out 2k!

    I have honestly never played a terrible game like this in my life. Very poor design, definitely not beginner friendly at all. In MyCareer mode, your character would constantly miss 80% of his shots, while the other team would constantly score a lot.     The game has some redeeming qualities in the presentation and graphics. Gameplay is cartoonish garbage. Nothing makes sense. Shot meter is impossible, Butt steals are still regular, people can still reach and intercept the ball with their back faced towards the ball, centers can chase down point guards, court is too small. Just garbage.

I remember this thing on ps3 and yes it's even more worse. 3,190php (65usd) more expensive than AAA game more expesive than a fresh release avengers. The shot clock indicator on the floor and the shot meter is the only new thing the rest is all the same thing. Better wait for ps5. The copy paste era is began last year on current gen. Shoot with button is not effective anymore if u want to score with button u only need to green and green window is more little than last year. Shoot stick is op for me i think if u have a trick for shoot u can shoot 9/10 3point.Have u seen a problem???.     One of the most disappointing 2k games I’ve ever played. It’s more of a shame that the late great Kobe Bryant is one of the poster players on the cover. I have no idea why they changed the shooting mechanics. Too shoot a shot is like finding a needle in a haystack. This game is so frustrating.

    Easily the worst basketball video game I've ever played! How do you make a basketball game that the casual player can't make an easy mid range shot? It seems the product managers at 2k outsmarted themselves and made a great game for the loud minority of 2k League players.

    As for the casual players, like myself, I can't believe I'm writing this, but can't wait for NBA Live next gen!

That's why it pains me to see what this franchise has become. I'm done with NBA2k, forever. It's going to take a complete rebuild of this franchise to get me to invest in it again. I'm done with NBA2k, forever. It's going to take a complete rebuild of this franchise to get me to invest in it again. I know we make fun of sports games for being copies of last year's game, but this is by far the most blatant copy and paste job I've ever seen in gaming. if you turned off the shot meter and handed me a controller, I honestly don't think I could tell the difference between this and NBA2k20. The presentation is exactly the same, with the exact same cutscenes, animations and on screen graphics. Whoever decided it was acceptable to charge $60 for this should be fired and blacklisted from every game development company. Gameplay is somehow even worse than last year in some regards. Last year there was an issue where easy shots just didn't wanna go in for some reason. Prime MJ missed layups like Javale McGee on Shaqtin a fool with absolutely no reasoning behind it. So, how did they fix this? By making EVERY SHOT go in. I'm not a pro player, hell I'd hesitate to call myself above average, but I have never shot under 70% in a game. That's unheard of in the basketball world, so why does it happen in the only simulation NBA game we can buy? Character movement does feel more realistic, but it results in slower reaction times, so you get burnt by even the most average of iso players on a regular basis. AI is absolutely incompetent, to the point that it ruins the experience. I have never seen a center shift to the basket to contest a driving player. Never. They give up wide open layups 100% of the time. Players don't shoot when they're wide open and pass the ball out of bounds constantly. The computer commits backcourt violations all the time and runs out of bounds on a constant basis. Now for the worst part of this game: the microtransactions. I'll give some credit to 2k, they put one hell of a basketball mini game in a gambling sim. Oh, wait this is a basketball game. Sorry, easy to forget sometimes. They purposely make everything such a massive grind to encourage the purchase of VC to speed up sed grind. It's blatantly obvious and absolutely disgusting. Realistically, if you can't play this game for hours everyday, you're never going to reach max level in mycareer or have a full galaxy opal squad in myteam. It's just impossible with the grind they've enforced on the playerbase. I honestly think some of the gambling mechanics break the law, but 2k is in the pockets of the ESRB and therefore, gets away with it. The soundtrack sucks, as it usually does. There's no variety, it's all just mumble rap. Blacktop is the same as it has been for the past 3 or 4 years, which is disappointing. Remember when you could have a dunk contest in the Blacktop mode? I know I do. Hey, there are WNBA teams this year again, because that's definitely something we asked for and wanted the devs to spend their time on. Don't buy this game, stay the hell away from it and just stay away from 2k in general. The only reason it got a 2 is because it does somewhat work and 0s an 1s are only reserved for games that don't even work.… Expand

The post game is pretty much unusable unless you are a stick shooter, which by the way makes for a huge zen problem where people use modded controllers to win every game online. Post hooks are super OP with the stick, but hooks, fades, dropsteps, etc are hard to do in game. Finishing is pretty much running at the barleys and hoping for a good animation, euro steps, spins, hop steps, floaters, and double clutches are practically useless. Shooting is a whole other issue, some players will make every single shot and some will miss every shot, it’s incredibly random at times unless you can get a team of guys that you know the releases of. As a NMS MyTeam guy, the door is always revolving, so it’s hard to learn new releases every few games. MyTeam is still a cash grab, attempting to force people into buying packs for the best cards, although it is better than its Madden counterpart, with actual budget players who can legitimately compete with the best cards in the game in the hands of a skilled player (a la Nick Anderson earlier in the year). As for myleague, I have encountered numerous glitches and bugs, mostly from downloading older rosters, taking over all 30 teams, etc. I encountered a glitch where random played in the league would have their stats messed up, like one time I had Ja win most improved player after averaging nearly the same stats as the year before, but when I looked at the stats from the year before, which was his second year, it said he averaged 2 points for the Hawks, when I know he was on the Grizzlies and averaged about 19 points. This happened to a lot of players around the league. I also encounter glitched with classic rosters where players don’t age, or don’t regress, sometimes the court turns completely black as do the players when I jump into games, sometimes I’ll jump into a game and a team will be running a 5 big man lineup, this happens a lot actually. Sometimes 86 overalls will sign for the minimum contract because they don’t sign in the offseason, there is no voter fatigue, tendencies are very inaccurate, auto generated draft classes are not balanced at all, injuries are too frequent, teams sign and draft way too many players at one position while neglecting the rest of the positions, cpu trades are very rarely meaningful, often times it’s just a player at a position with a certain overall being traded for another player at the exact same position with the exact same overall, it feels like the trade just to trade, with no meaning.    … Expand

Beyond that, this year removed creation features such as the ability to choose your accessory colors for custom teams. The creation suite also desperately needs to be redone as it encourages players to steal and repost other creator's work since there is no way to save a design or favorite it. You can favorite a creator, but with so many reposts, finding the original creator is a Herculean task.

    The usual micro transactions are back that have plagued the Mycareer experience for a while. The mode has very little value if you do not have a strong desire to play online as the grind still exists. Additionally the story for Mycareer this year was notably poor. It wants to incorporate role playing elements but still forces the player into contrived situations that they have no agency over and punishes the protagonist for it. There doesn't have to be a "right choice" and a "wrong choice" per say but perhaps something like hamming it up for the media would increase your popularity but lower your team chemistry and vice versa. This idea exists in previous games but it has never been well executed. Given the fact that it seems like many players prefer the Mycareer mode as a means to play Park and Rec, perhaps that should be the mode entirely and a new story mode could be introduced similar to FIFA's "The Journey".

    In short, the NBA 2K franchise has relied on its reputation to keep it afloat for far too long and the product is now no longer innovative and frankly, no longer fun.    … Expand

    Has a couple of new additions to MyTeam. XP system is a good inclusion, but due to no improvement and it being impossible to shoot even at an average % the game is not fun. Zero enjoyment here, worst NBA 2k I can remember, save your money

    Not only did they lie about nerfing slashers being able to dribble for the entire shot clock andthen greening it, they changed the shot meter which is meh. But the thing that crosses the line is the slashers being better shooters than the archetype of sharpshooter.

Aside from that, the game got really harder to play in my opinion (MyCareer NBA and Playground), it seems like 2K favors people that upgrade right away (during first week or release?) with VCs. When you play in the playground, the players that have upgrades already were so dominant and it would really try to make you want to buy VC out of frustration. I ended up buying VC for USD100 and my player got better in the playground. It still sucks that I had to do two same REP levels. I threw away $160 and I know that's nothing to most people that play 2K but I really think it's not worth it.… Expand

If you're in between you're most likely struggling. Even pure shooters recommend buying shooting boost. But my first build is a perimeter lock and just saying he's not good for shooting or defense he constantly gets shot over and layed on by playmaking shotcreators, last time I checked they can only shoot and dribble. But the only thing I could think a perimeter lock is for is steals or reaching which is pretty dumb because I wanna play ACTUAL DEFENSE! There's also one more thing I've noticed there's only one pie chart that lets you dribble and shoot constantly which is the shooting and dribbling pie chart. The closest one is pure playmaker with high ballhandle but mediocre shooting of 75. I do respect the dribble heads even though this year the bad people only look better because they make a playshot, do one dribble, use screen, then shoot off dribble and boom they have a higher win percentage than anyone that's not using a playshot even though they never actually learned how dribble to get open, and it definitely doesn't help when the center drops you with a screen that you literally slowly walked into not run into.… Expand

The only real change has been with the environments for the neighbourhood and court ls and pointless Mycareer story.  MyGM has been completely and deliberately ignored and nothing further to add as nothing has been added.

    Now Mycareer, another story which has no influence or bearing on you getting to the NBA. The story has some good moments buta lack of a combine and obvious team of choice workout that leads to you, surprise ,surprise being drafted by that team is just weak.  Once in the NBA the story just stops, no follow on, no endorsement tasks, no interviews, no NOTHING. The pointless draft of you and your friend getting drafted No1 & No2 felt like something could happen, but the story just stops. There is no follow on, no content, no build up to a long history of rivalry or story regarding why he was traded, it's just trash.  Even winning the NBA has no winning cut sceen anymore, the season it ust ends. Now in the progression of Mycareer it feels pointless with no way to increase Team chemistry as its tied to interviews which aren't in the game. Stupid emails from your agent saying "you killed it" at your last endorsement event which never happens as its been taken out of the game. The game has so many issues its unreal and smacks of contempt to their customers. This is not a patch as a patch adds or improves on a game. This is a regression as the things that made Mycareer in 2K20 has been deliberately left out for NO REASON. For 2K to come out and say they are focusing on next gen is one thing, but dont release a game worse than the last with less content and development and demand the same cost as a new title. Please do not buy this game, get 2K20 and you will have a better game for less money. It is absolutely infuriating and boring trying to compete in the current meta, let alone against the AI. 2k has gone out of their way to make the game inaccessible to new players and even franchise veterans. MyCareer has its own gamut of problems and until a new patch comes out, this has been a $100 waste of money. Not cool.

The only way you can hit an outside shot is by hitting a perfect green release. Layups are easily missed, and playing defense against the CPU is impossible.

    Then there is the PAY WALL. Basically to get better players, you have to purchase VC in order to purchase packs. Once purchasing packs, you ONLY have 2% odds on getting really good player cards. Bottom line, you have to pay and buy a lot of packs in order to get a good team. In order to compete against the computer, you have to have a good team other wise you will continue to lose and become frustrated. I spent about 1,000 hours on 2K20 and it was such a great experience because the time involved was worth it as the rewards given for playing the game slowly made your team better. However for 2k21, the rewards are lackluster and downright almost impossible to achieve unless as stated before you have a good team to compete.

    In summary I stopped playing 2K21 after 2 weeks because it was extremely frustrating and difficult to play against the CPU. This sucks because I spent $100 on the Mamba Edition and spent $100 on VC which really didn't make my team any better due to the 2% odds.

    I’ve been playing NBA games since 1996 and this is the worst one. Can’t make a shot, can’t hit a free throw. Basically NBA2k20 but worse.

    I wanted to write why "0", but it is just too depressing. Nothing in this game is done right. 2k21 is like a patch that broke the game to the point it is unplayable without a hope it will be fixed later. I hope ps5 version will be better, but who am I kidding - it's 2k....

    Absolutely terrible archetype building system that makes it to were you can’t be well rounded AT ALL. You can only be good at 2 things and NOTHING ELSE. The physics are EVEN WORSE than the archetype building system.

The devs are clearly focussing on Microtransactions over performance with MyTeam now being the poster game mode for 2K. Even the cover athlete (Damian Lillard) is trashing the shooting mechanics. Dump MyTeam, change the neighbourhood up instead of a beach re-skin and fix the broken gameplay. I can't possibly see NBA 2K getting any worse than this. You’ll run a perfect pick and roll, the defence collapses, you kick it out to the free man in the corner, and 97 times out of 100 you will brick that shot. I’m not exaggerating, it is insane. The cover athlete tweeted that he can’t even make a free throw for **** sake!!! I struggle to put this into perspective...I had “No Mans Sky” day one, and I feel more conned with 2k21.

    Also here’s a disclaimer; I’m using the new pro stick features they’ve forced on us, I went 10-0 in online triple threat today...it was still **** I won those games exclusively shooting 3 feet away from the basket. Nothing fun about it.

    Apparently there’s a “hot fix” coming tomorrow for the shooting, but jesus christ read the reddit pages and twitter replies before you buy this game....Unless you hate yourself of course!    … Expand

    Just like madden 21 this is another copy and paste from previous years. Filled with micro transactions. Your my player starts with an overall of 60 and can't make a layup when he makes the NBA.

    I haven't played an NBA game in a long time, so I decided to jump in this year. I find this game EXTREMELY difficult to play. I can't even outscore the other team in the training mode scrimmage on Rookie difficulty. It's really frustrating that there's no way to play an NBA game without extremely complex controls and frustrating handling. I don't be dipping into this market again.

    2k20 copy and paste. Completely the same graphics, animations, badges. This game is a complete cash grab, which is typical of 2k interactive. The game is centred around borderline forcing players to buy VC on-top of its 60 dollar price tag. the game is also littered with advertisements. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

    It loses a point because of its Virtual Currency (VC) obsession, a recurringissue in 2K games. It’s supposed to ensure that all your actions in every mode – career, MyTeam, even watching 2KTV – secure rewards, but they’re often someagre that the entire game comes across as a grind, aimed at funnelling you towards the PS Store to part with real cash.Please don’t do that. The only way games like this and FIFA will change in the next gen is if their players make a sustainedeffort not to exchange any of their hard-earned dosh for digital trading cards. Otherwise this is solid, but on that front 2K (and EA, and the rest) must do better. [Issue#181, p.94]

    NBA 2K21 makes welcome improvements to its MyCareer and MyTeam modes, but the frustratingly inconsistent new shooting system and lack of changes elsewhere make it feel like it’s lost its step over other sports games.

    On the court, this is a brilliant basketball game that doesn’t change much. Why would it when it’s not really necessary? The microtransactions, however, are more annoying than Houston’s playstyle.
