    One of many games inspired by Frictonal Games’ horror masterpieces, Narcosis is a very short, simple but atmospheric horror game. The graphics are very basic and the gameplay is kept at bare minimum, with a few puzzles, hiding and running from monsters moments. The story is tragic and resembles Soma in some ways... Not an essential horror game, but one that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy.

    Ganz tief unten trennen uns nur wenige Zentimeter vom qualvollen Tod. Umso eigenartiger also, dass mit Ausnahme von Bioshock und Soma kaum ein Horrorgame auf dem Meeresgrund spielt. Mit Narcosis legt Indie-Entwickler Honor Code nach und schafft den bis dato konsequentesten Deep-Sea-Grusler – darin geht es nämlich nie ins Trockene. Als so ziemlich einziger Überlebender eines tragischenGanz tief unten trennen uns nur wenige Zentimeter vom qualvollen Tod. Umso eigenartiger also, dass mit Ausnahme von Bioshock und Soma kaum ein Horrorgame auf dem Meeresgrund spielt. Mit Narcosis legt Indie-Entwickler Honor Code nach und schafft den bis dato konsequentesten Deep-Sea-Grusler – darin geht es nämlich nie ins Trockene. Als so ziemlich einziger Überlebender eines tragischen Unfalls stapfen wir in einem wuchtigen Taucheranzug durch undurchsichtige Algenfelder, Spinnenkrabben-verseuchte Höhlen und durch die Überreste einer versunkenen Forschungsstation. Wir erhellen mit Leuchtfackeln die oft stockfinstere Umgebung, wehren mit dem Messer aggressive Tintenfische ab oder schweben via Schubdüse über unendliche Abgründe. Bei so reduziertem Gameplay bleibt viel Zeit zum Fürchten – und die nutzt man vorbildlich. Die gelegentlichen Jumpscares funktionieren zwar nicht so gut, dafür punktet Narcosis beim psychologischen Horror: Wenn der Raum plötzlich Kopf steht oder im totenstillen Crewquartier surreal ein Telefon klingelt, geht uns ganz schön die Düse. Richtig ätzend wird das ohnehin klaustrophobische Spiel, wenn uns mal die Puste ausgeht – denn wie Outlasts Kamera muss auch unserer Luftvorrat ständig neu aufgefüllt werden, während jede Stresssituation wieder daran saugt. Spielmechanisch nicht so prickelnd hingegen sind die manchmal fiesen Checkpoints, die schlechte Führung im offenen Gelände sowie störende Ladezeiten zwischendurch.… Expand

    Sure, the gameplay and story can be a little slow, and the narration is somewhat gauche and not well mixed, but these are minor issues in an otherwise intriguing, original game that shows the potential of human helplessness in a visceral and highly informative way. Narcosis is a mystery that plays on how little we know about our own world, as the game aggressively reminds us with elements of supernatural terror.

    Narcosis has a tale worth telling but it's all too brief. Failure can stifle your momentum through the detailed, claustrophobic depths. It's a game steeped in atmosphere but combat feels clumsy and the moments of actual horror feel far too fleeting.

    If you are not a fan of the genre or you cant get along with its slow tempo, it may be better to just ignore it. But nevertheless, an engaging story mix with a deep atmosphere make Narcosis a very unique title.
