The strategic use of split aiming, slow motion, and the ol’ stylish window breach create one sensational action sequence after another in an explosive battle through the violent underworld. Unleash a torrent of destruction with an incredible level of control over both your weapons and your body. Twist and turn through the air while aiming both hands at priority threats or line up a perfect ricochet to drop an unsuspecting gangster from behind. Break up the high octane running and gunning a bit with dynamic sequences like a thrilling motorcycle chase or slow it all down and take a moment to think through a series of clever (and possibly fatal) physics-based puzzles. When My Friend Pedro is in full flow, it's like watching a ballet, the game rewards skill and finesse and it is truly beautiful to see. Just go and play it. You will not regret it.

My Friend Pedro is every bit as fun to play as it looks. The game exudes finesse, rewarding players for risky manoeuvres, experimentation and styling on the multiple opponents you encounter. While some may bemoan the short five-hour campaign, others will find immense replay-ability thanks to high score mechanics and speedrunning sensibilities. Whichever side of the fence you sit, the game is fun and one that is designed to make you feel like a badass. What's not to like about that?

My Friend Pedro delivers some really spectacular bullet time sequences, lots of interesting situations and many powerful weapons for you to use, but also some weak boss fights.

This is a game made to be played many times, with you building your skill with the controls and your knowledge of the stages, but both these things feel slightly clumsy. Still, there's absolutely fun to be had here, with some sequences that truly do feel great to play, and collectable gameplay modifiers that let you go totally bananas.

That’s not to say My Friend Pedro doesn’t have its moments; somersaulting and sniping is novel, and when you clear a room by weaponising the environment it’s incredibly satisfying. Just don’t expect the slickest shooter. [Issue #175, p.80]

Plot is irrelevant, this game is about pulling mind-blowing combos with ease and elegance, and it delivers just that.

There’s different weapon types that actually feel and play differently. Different levels with different enemies, nicely paced and with just the right difficulty.

I could do without “that” level, but the heli-hat makes it worth it.

Do youNot sure why there are low scores specifically on PS4. Probably due to racist trolls upset over the name "Pedro." But the game is good! Do you like side scrollers and John Wick? You'll like this. One-man innovator and creator Victor Ågren has done an outstanding job at making you feel like a badass. The story is non-existent, and that's just fine. The creative sequences at the end of each level chunk are particularly stellar and serve as eye candy. Slow motion is generous and feels top notch. Max Payne is one of my all time favorites, and this reminded me of that magic. So why only an 8? The final product is a great pick-up-and-play game that unfortunately would benefit from more of everything. More level variety, weapons, and especially moves/tricks to bring the baddies down. I'm hoping Mr. Ågren gets to do a bigger and better sequel with those things, but if not, this will suffice. It's familiar yet fresh, and if you're at all interested, you should totally buy it. Not much to say about it honestly, nothing special here but still a fun action side scroller with playful gunplay.

The central focus of the game is traversal, dodging, and shooting in what is essentially a platform game. The protagonist can dodge, roll, jump, swing, zip line, and slow down time. Starting My Friend Pedro feels like ending a Metroid game. The protagonist can also shoot, dual wield, toss explosives, and ricochet bullets. The sandbox of tools makes the game approachable and replay able. Honestly, I am terrible at these kinds of games and I made it through the main story.

You guide for the entire playthrough is a talking banana. Honestly, the game did not need narrative device. Instead, the protagonist could be let loose and I will kill anyone that looks like a bad guy. (Is this a moral failing?) The real meta game is gunning for a high score. Performance is ranked on a letter grade scale that includes S for best. (What’s wrong with an A?) I didn’t bather with trying to kill with skill as the tagline for “Bulletstorm” used to say. I found the slowing down of time, for example, to ruin my flow of shooting, jumping, dodging, and kicking. Unlocks found in the game add to the replayability. This is good because the story campaign is only a few hours long.

The trouble with the game is a simple lack of polish. Environments look rough. This ain’t Super Mario with guns. Traversal can be awkward at time. This is more of a make and sandbox and throw the player in it sort of game.
