Switching to Unreal Engine 4, MXGP improves its physics in relation with the always-changing track morphology, while graphics looks too muddy even for a motocross game. Enjoyable yet improvable.

Despite a great improvement in the track and bikes physics, we feel that MXGP3 has very little content and some game modes have been eliminated compared to MXGP2.

An exemplary use of an official license, dressed up in Unreal Engine 4's superb visuals and offering a challenging racing experience. Not perfect, but very good indeed. [Aug 2017, p.97]

Excelling with its simulation aspect and deep career mode, MXGP 3 is a solid motocross title in a market that is virtually non-existent. Back in the days of the original PlayStation, both 989 Sports (Sony) and EA had flagship motocross titles, but those days have sadly passed. For a smaller developer like Milestone to accomplish what they have with the game speaks wonders, but there is much room for growth. With the game featuring the FIM license, maybe it would be more appropriate to lock up the AMA license to have the official stadium tracks and drivers for this side of the pond. For having all the licenses and sponsors, the audience needs to be broadened.

MXGP3 is a transitional chapter in the motocross saga from Milestone. The potential is huge, but the debut of the Unreal Engine 4 in the game is quite disappointing. The new handling model is largely amendable, and the AI is worse than the previous chapters. Overall MXGP3 is a fun game, but surely not the best in the series.

It’s evident MXGP3 is not an AAA racing game. With 22 people on small dirt tracks, the races are often fast-paced and exciting and the bike physics add a surprisingly realistic touch. Unfortunately, with its so-so graphics and lackluster game modes, the rest of the experience feels somewhat rushed and unpolished.

MXGP3 is simple and has some issues, but it's quite enjoyable and motocross fans will like it.

Despite some issues that will turn off many regular gamers, MXGP3 makes great use of the official licensing and will certainly please fans of the sport.

MXGP3 feels awfully similar to MXGP2, and in spite of the Unreal Engine 4, the game is still lame in it's graphics. Nevertheless, the licensed content is quite impressive and should appeal to the most hardcore fans.

It seems that Milestone was not quite sure where to go with this one. MXGP3 can be a very difficult sim racer totally unsuitable for casual gamers, or a bland arcade racer when you turn on the driving assists. And none of these two faces of the game really works.

Playing it safe isn't always the best option. The severe lack of innovation is one of the reasons MXGP 3 doesn't exactly make for a great purchase. Its long loading time and disruptive physics should also be considered before you put your hard-earned money on the table.

There’s real challenge to be had with the game’s true-to-life physics, and varied weather and track conditions. But the game feels lacking in presentation. It needs something to inject some adrenaline into the career mode. Reading tweet-like messages from your agent gets old, fast. Still, for diehard motocross fans, this is your game.

MXGP 3 is still not the game we dare to dream of. Compared to the first two games in the franchise it’s pretty good, but it contains a lot of disappointments. Luckily the key elements, the controls and the racing, work just fine.

With a bit more polish, and less of a lingering sense of obligation to hold on to the licence, MXGP could grow to become a premier racing sim, but right now it’s muddy at best.
