Games Master UKDec 1, 2015An adventure for all ages, and another solid hit from Telltale - just don't expect Minecraft's freedom. [Dec 2015, p.81]
-
Oct 25, 2015You don’t need an encyclopaedic knowledge of the self-contained mythology of the Minecraft world in order to garner enjoyment from the experience, although admittedly it does help. The quality of the writing and the self-referential humour makes for an experience that the entire family can enjoy.
-
Oct 27, 2015Minecraft: Story Mode – Episode 1: The Order of the Stone is a charming game full of vibrant environments and unique characters that can be enjoyed by both kids and adults.
-
Oct 16, 2015If you or your child are fans of Minecraft, then this is an easy buy.
-
Oct 15, 2015Older gamers who aren't Minecraft devotees may find Story Mode skewing a bit young, but that's quite all right. We've had plenty of mature offerings lately, and it's great to have something that's fit for families and kids.
-
Oct 15, 2015Minecraft: Story Mode strays from the more mature content that Telltale normally associates themselves with and manages to create a fun, family-friendly world for one with no real story.
-
Oct 13, 2015Minecraft: Story Mode doesn't deviate from the well-established Telltale formula much, keeping both what works (the storytelling) and what often doesn't work (combat). Even so, it accomplishes something impressive. I was skeptical of Telltale's ability to tell a story in the Minecraft universe that would be interesting to people who weren't already fans of the game, but so far, the studio is pulling it off with aplomb.
-
Oct 13, 2015Perhaps the reason why the marriage of Minecraft and story works so well is that Telltale has kept things simple. It’s the most basic of hero’s journey plots.
-
Oct 13, 2015Episode One is a fun two hours with plenty of shout-outs to fans of the series while also a solid balance of gameplay and characters for those who’ve never combined flint, sticks, and a feather to create an arrow. As a "player choice via conversation" game, though, the plot so far is fairly standard.
-
Oct 13, 2015Minecraft: Story Mode is off to a good start, and despite a story-less canvas and only in-game references to draw from, developer Telltale has crafted something promising.
-
Oct 15, 2015Order of the Stone continues Telltale's run of strong opening episodes to their series. The drawbacks are mainly down to a weak supporting cast and that air of familiarity that gets more fetid with each passing Telltale series.
-
Nov 3, 2015Minecraft, as defined by Telltale Games, is a blank canvas for storytelling. The effort and enthusiasm of the study in this first episode is notorious, and the game succeeds in delivering a story that is engaging even if its addressed to people of all ages. Incredible fan service.
-
Oct 30, 2015Its story is certainly not bad – it is just that it is very safe, and doesn’t take any risks – and it misses a real opportunity to be great.
-
Oct 25, 2015Telltale does something truly interesting in the Minecraft universe, though it's too short and way too easy to really leave a mark.
-
Oct 15, 2015A fun start, but there's a lot here to build on.
-
Oct 21, 2015So while I can’t really recommend Minecraft: Story Mode to adults casually acquainted with Mojang’s hit game (like me), or even those who generally tend to enjoy most Telltale adventures (also me), I suspect just about any tween with a passion for Minecraft will have a fine time (like my kid).

Playstation Official Magazine UKDec 16, 2015It's a starting block, but while it's not made of dirt, it's a way off gold. [Christmas 2015, p.95]
-
Edge MagazineDec 13, 2015It's strange that players aren't given more time to make decisions. [Christmas 2015, p.122]
-
Nov 5, 2015Even for Telltale, building a scenario piece by piece in a world totally void of narrative material was a delicate task, hence this parodic quest lacks substance and is only engaging for Minecraft fans, though they may feel constrained in such story-driven adventures.
-
Oct 16, 2015Minecraft: Story Mode - Episode 1: Order of the Stone is a lacklustre start to Telltale's latest series.
-
Oct 15, 2015The way that Telltale takes advantage of Minecraft lore to form its own narrative is intriguing and will delight fans of the original game, but what the studio is doing with this new story isn’t doing much that will excite anyone else.
-
Oct 14, 2015Story Mode – Episode 1 hits or misses with its characters and presents a relatively anemic plot for later episodes to build on; less immediately captivating than its predecessors, yes, but Telltale has set out to find the perfect blend of action and heart – they haven’t found it yet – but in later episodes they just might.
-
Nov 10, 2015It’s as if the shift from expanding on The Walking Dead‘s or Game of Thrones‘ darker mythologies to a whimsical, almost sentimental vibe, drained all the panache from the script. Scenes that could have been insightful or ironic or just plain hilarious instead comes off as derivative or dull.
