All in all, this game is really starting to annoy me. Being assigned a mission by my wife - who suddenly thinks she is in charge - when I have zero ammo for two guns and a third gun which will not fire at all is just plain game stopping for me. Add in the mindless, boring conversation and it is all starting to grate on me.

I will finish this and move on, I doubt I will want to replay it like I did with the previous two.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Creatures spit in Artyom's face and gas mask gets broken. Receives 4-5 kicks from that blind ape, falls down with it, Gas mask is fine. Gotta love this. The graphics are beautiful. Lovely level design, especially Taiga, loved the idea of moving with the train through the four seasons. You have a lot to explore, but it can get a bit boring. Chapters are divided between exploring ( a lot), shooting and stealthy missions, or go full rambo if you want. Keep in mind that, like the previous games, it will affect your ending. Characters are not that interesting and the story, plot are a bit rushed but it didn't bothered me that much. I don't consider it the best of the trilogy, but it's a good game. It still has that feeling that kept me going until the end, the same feeling that i had on 2033 and last light. Expand

Metro Exodus is a game for which you need to be patient to enjoy, especially if you’ve never been introduced to the Metro universe.

The reason I say that is because of how slow the game feels on standard PS4. As if 30fps was not constraining enough, the game can be super laggy and freezy, the speed of movement is also very heavy and the aim precision is horrendous compared to Call of Duty standards. The long loading times don’t make good first impression either, neither do the many bugs, textures problems, etc. Moreover, Artyom doesn’t speak, which can sound kind of cheap for a 2019 game. Even then, some dialogs are really hard to follow when everyone speaks at the same time, as it’s the case in the train in the very beginning of the game. That’s even more of a problem when there is no proper directional sound in this game. It totally feels like a 2.1, and surely not a 5.1. That makes it very confusing to detect origin of sounds, and again, makes you think the game won’t be as good as expected. On the bad part, I’d also add that the movements of some ennemies really look like they’re coming straight out of a cheap 2007 MMO, such as those many beasts seen in Volga (the first open-world level). Finally, some missions can feel redundant and the whole story evolves pretty slowly.

But, there is a but, and it’s big. The post-apocalyptic Russian setting has never been as breathtaking as in this game. I love the fact that Metro Exodus takes the player on a journey through post-nuked Russia & Kazakhstan. The artistic direction is incredibly good in this game, I’ve had a few Wow moments such as when you enter in Novosibirsk. This whole feel of a giant journey is a main force of the game. Between each hostile environment, you feel at home in the train, and that is allowed thanks to the details of dialogues and other stuff you can see/do/hear, which are as good during the whole game. Research of detail is also made by having a fairly rich inventory: good weapon customization, lots of stuff that can be used/controlled (lamps, chargers, watches with multiple functions, filters, backpack, goggles, and more). Another aspect I love about Metro is how it mixes very tense and even paranormal phases with more calm and mentally easy moments, and that those tense moments are sometimes unexpected. Despite its huge technical problems, I really got into Metro’s universe thanks to this game, browsing its fandom pages, that’s when I know I got to like this game. If the flaws I mentioned are corrected in the next Metro, it will have the potential to be a very good game.

However I'm afraid to say that this is my least favorite game of the series, why: the game has shifted from an post-apocalytic action game to a post-apocalyptic survival horror. This game has by far the least action sequences of the previous Metro games. The animation of the characters and the dialogues are not good as it could be. The performance on PS4 Pro + Boost mode is in avg 20~30fps. I've played the game 4 months afte the launch and there are still plenty of bugs. The history is also weaker against the history of the previous games. The first act is fine, the second act (caspian desert) is not good, as its a directly call from mad max, and the third act is the best one (the forest and the metro). If you're a big fan of the game, I recommend it, but don't expect to be as surprised as the last games. If you're a survival genre gamer, you'll probably love this game. Expand

This game's story is great, and a good sendoff to Artyom and the crew. The gameplay has some very solid elements, however some frustrating design choices make the experience less enjoyable. If this game had 5 more months of developement time it could have been a masterpiece.

Let me start with the good:
Game has amazing aesthetics and realism. As someone who knows soviet era very well (I am from post-USSR country), game captures world design is very very realistic way, with nice extra details and interactions with NPCs too.
    Overall: well made design.
You can get a lot of story from just listening to npcs and in general, there is no much downtime as story picks fast and does not give you time to explore as everything feels urgent.
From technical side: dynamic coms dialogue system is amazing, more games should have this.
From maps side: By far the best open world map has been Taiga, very atmospheric especially at night.
Weapons: there is good variety of guns and makes play-style not boring, but I wish there were some non-lethal guns too.
Ending: there are 2 and I got the bad one. It is apparently NOT easy to get good ending. But I kinda feel like bad ending makes sense.

    Now the bad:
Movement: I don't like the clunky "moon gravity-like" jumps and movement.
30fps on PS5 is NOT acceptable.
In general I found no reason to have sort of quasi-open world as the game did. Linear game is perfect for this type of storytelling.
Glitches/bugs: overall very few but checking map in a drivable car in Caspian glitches the camera.

Maps: by far the "worst" map was Caspian. it is not pure bad but by comparison to other bioms/maps, I think this is the weakest.
Gunplay is overall good but there is pretty much no way to play this game in pure stealth. At least it was not obvious to me how.

Strangely there was almost no mission where the tracks were obscured by other trains and we had to remove it , something like that. I feel like game is giving a bit too much "deus ex machina".

And finally: compared to other metro games, there is almost no supernatural until the ending and just a little bit, maybe some see this as positive.

VERDICT: Good game, but weaker than 2033 and Last light for sure.

Pretty enjoyable. It's not really an 8/10, but also isn't "mixed" as the 7/10 would suggest. Open world parts don't work that well (I didn't like the Caspian level at all), but when the game gets linear it's really really good. Basic but solid gameplay, good graphics, gripping story. Bit shorter than I'd like.

Many post-Soviet citizens will remember the life of their grandparents with a smile. I am glad that the developers have passed the spirit of that era without stereotypes. I am sorry that foreign players will not be able to appreciate all this splendor.

Now I understand why Rockstar doesn't allow to translate conversations. Subtitles only. The game has a lot of jargon, catch phrases and slang. I don't know how to explain to my foreign friend what was a joke of a particular phrase. I like the depth of each of the characters. I even remembered their names! It's very nice to come up and just listen to a conversation that can last more than 10 minutes. My respect.

Metro exodus the third game in the series and a continuation straight out of the secret ending of first light after you the main protagonist survived the events of first light with the nazis and the dark ones you started searching for an outside place without mutants monsters or radiation so you can build a colony outside of the metro and so you find out that Moscow is radio blocked and that are more people in the world not just you and that starts your adventure

    pros:
    - i really liked the change of paste yes the game is eaiser than the others but yet its challenging and aggressive

    - i like that the game is realistic and the fact that your gun will jam if it will get dirty or you being able to patch your mask if it breaks

    - the graphics are just wow i am amazed at how this game looks realistic

-guns feel amazing and the new crossbow is a cool add on to the mix

-the open world and the freedom you get is just wow you are able to just explore the world without anyone bugging you about things

-this game is R Rated which means they don"t hold back and i really like that i can actually feel like i am trying to survive at any cost

-the new weapon crafting system is awesome and adds a lot more searching the world for parts and new things

    - the Russian dubbing is really good i recommend you to switch voice to Russian and subs to English

    - the new day and night time mechanic is really awesome basically giving you the freedom to decide at what time to strike enemies and travel outside

    cons

-because of the new crafting system the game got a lot easier and you are harder to kill

-there is one map where they give you a car to travel by which is pointless in my opinion i just walked off and explored everything i prefer it that way

-the loading screen is just awful it feels like forever until the game loads up

    - story is pointless and you loose your main goal very early on and then just forget at some point what are you even doing

-the game is clunky and has a lot of bugs fps drops rendering issues that they have to fix

-the game is a lot more slow paste then the previous ones sometimes in the bad way

    - the game feels a little bit to short i finished it after 15 hours of exploring and searching everything i guess in this day and age 15 hours is nothing for me and i really wanted more time with this game

    - the people you meet on the way are mostly just crazed lunatics and i really wish you could meet more people to whom you can relate

    - the new mutants are an awesome mix to the roster of mutants and monsters but most are recycled and most of the new ones are plain boring so i really wished they could add better and scarier ones

    - this game took the whole survival aspect to a bad way because you can fix your mask unlike the previous games where you could just take a new one from a dead body or you can just craft bullets which makes this game less scary and you to more of a tank

-another thing that bothered me is a mechanic they basically recycled from last light and its the do good get the good ending or do bad get the bad ending mechanic more or less like dishonored if you kill your bad but if you knock out your good i really hated the fact that they added this mechanic to the game because unlike last light there is no one there to prove your kindness to and it just effects some peoples reactions and how they talk to you and the ending which was kinda horrible and pointless

in conclusion this game is a good change of paste but its really different from the other two its more open and you can travel and scavenge stuff and feel like you are trying to just survive but then you pull out your crafting backpack and craft the essentials that you need like air filters or first aid i really liked the game and its realism but somethings just kinda ruined it for me and that brings me to the final score i had a hard time pinning the final score to this game because the series is very close to my heart but i have to be honest about the score so my final score to metro exodus is a 7.5 out of ten it was almost a 8 but there are things in this game that are just not right and the story should have been better

Really enjoyed this. There's nothing amazingly new or innovative about it, it is just a very solid, mini open-world shooter that doesn't pretend to be anything it's not, and is very, very capable at what it does.

Looks good, faultless technically, and I played it start to finish without getting bored.

Sooting 2/2 the only thing I can say that I had never felt unfair, the shooting system is quite good if we take into about that 4A games is kind of small studio.

Music 1/2 I think that if after you finished the game and you can't think of any soundtrack in it, you can not give full points to the game.

That is just the first half of the year too. The Metro Exodus is the one I was looking most forward out of all of these and for the most part it holds up. Exodus is the third entry of Artyom’s journey through the metro fighting mutants and bandits alike. Being that this is the third entry they had to turn it up to 11 with this game and take you completely out of the metro this time around; which was an excellent choice.

The story is a on the road type of apocalypse type of story or in this games case it is a on the rails journey due you travel through Russia via a train the whole game. The game also decided to take literally every single post apocalypse story and cram it into one game. We get the cannibals, religious cult, the baron of a wasteland who controls the gas, and the people who have been trapped in an area and are ignorant to any strangers. You get all that and more!! This does make the story more focused on the characters and their journey and not on any event that was happening unlike Last Light’s Soviet invasion. Artyom still doesn’t talk which truly hurts the scenes where you and Ana (his wife) are supposed to be having heartfelt moments which fall flat because he won’t respond to anything. The worst part of the story is the ending. The ending was cliché and anti-climatic which sucks for something that should be the last in the series of having a lack luster end game.

The game itself looks and plays great. They introduced this crafting mechanic that isn’t too complicated, but necessary if you want to survive. The crafting makes sense because it is the end of the world there wasn’t going to be any shops laying around for you to buy bullets. One mechanic they introduced I need to see in more games is their human AI. This AI is more tactical and won’t just sit there waiting to be killed they also do something no AI ever does and that is surrender. If you are a killing machine like myself the bandits will drop their guns in which point you can leave them, punch them, or my favorite do a knife execution. The shooting feels nice, but the limited type of guns available meant I really just use the same two throughout most of the story. This time around it is open world which works well with this game. I never did much exploring through the various worlds, so I assume there is much to see I just can’t say for sure.

Overall it was a good game my only issue is that I don’t know if it’s something that I’d ever go back to. I think that the story never hooked me, and I never ended up caring about the character while the gameplay was fun it wasn’t enough to leave me wanting more. I give this game a nice solid BARGAIN BIN.

You really have no significant choices to make in the world, so it just ends up ruining the pacing of the game. It's hard to explain but the game just feels pretty average. Yet, I do enjoy the game and it definitely has its moments when you are on a mission and it feels more like the previous entries.
What's ironic is that I used to read or watch reviews with the exact complaints that I described and though "they are not true fans" or "they are being overly critical because they resent Epic exclusivity," but unfortunately such reviews are spot on.

Metro Exodus is the third game in the series, and the first time to include elements like open-world, cinematic storytelling and non-winter terrain. So how is the game?

Well to get it out of the way, it is a good game. Elements it takes from the previous Metro games are still good, and sometimes even better. Unfortunately, there are also many elements that are new or revised which are not so good.

The Metro games have always been a Lineair Suvival Horror experience, which it is good at. What it is not so good at, is being a semi-open world. With the new larger maps that give the player more freedom comes the problem of slower pacing, chaotic pathfinding and confusion. The atmosphere of the apocalyptic tunnels and post-nuclear moscow is lost the moment the player enters these open maps, as the tension and well directed fear is lost. To describe this game the best, i will rate every chapter/map:

    Introduction in Moscow: (6/10)
This part of the game is meant to give a quick tutorial, but also sets up the story. Sadly, this part is not very strong. What makes Moscow interesting as a location, is that you will always be under the threat of radiation. It is your home, yet the story immediately leaves this very interesting location under the bases that there's a whole open world outside Moscow. This twist undermines the great stories of the previous games.

    The Volga (7/10):
This is where problems start to show. The freedom to explore a map rather than following a well directed path, is that the overall experience changes to something average without much tension. There's a mission in this map which locks you inside a large complex with only a single direction to go. There are mutants appearing, and it instantly feels familiar to the previous Metro games. Apart from this section however, it feels more like a standard open world FPS than a Metro game. The cultists are mostly NPC's that stand in your way, and offer no interesting challenge or backstory.

    The Bunker level (8/10):
This level embraces the lineair adrenaline fueled tension and atmosphere of the previous games, and it instantly makes it a far more enjoyable experience. You fight through dozens of cannibals to get to your precious Anna (which is nothing more than a damsel in distress in this game), and learn what happened to the government after the bombs dropped. Very cool mission. Sadly the AI was a bit dumb.

    The Caspian Sea (5/10):
Truth be told, it felt like a choir to get through this level. A desert area with a car, which feels like a Mad Max rip-off, has nothing remotely reminiscent to Metro games. The distances are too large, especially considering the car steers like **** The slaves are not interesting, and none of the Atmosphere from Nuclear Moscow is present here. There's one mission where you go underground while fending of spiders, which is enjoyable. But that's it. Very underwhelming level.

    Taiga (7/10):
This mission is far less open world than the previous missions, and it makes the game a whole lot better. The path is far more directed and lineair, which brings back some atmosphere and tension. Sadly though, the people in this area are not very intriguing, nor does the story care about them. It feels like just another stop to the actual destination.

    The Dead City (10/10:
Now this is Metro! Back is the Lineair Nuclear Winter atmosphere, the darkness, the cold, the radiation. The silence of a city that is even more radiated than Moscow brings a constant tension and immersion far better than event the previous games did. Familiar monsters like the Nosalises return, and new enemies are encountered that are interesting and frightening. Supernatural elements return in the way only Metro games can, and it makes for a level that is the best part of the game. I wish 4A games had made a game that only had levels like the Dead City.

Apart from all this, 4A games decided to change some things in favour of a more cinematic experience. Sadly, i think this was a bad decision. Climbing on ladders, looting enemies and opening doors now requires holding a button rather than tapping a button. Animations have been added that feel unnecessary and make the game slower rather than better. The bullet currency system is gone in favour of a crafting system, which is not as fun. Crafting on the go is a welcome addition however!

All in all you get my point. I feel like a more lineair game like the previous entries and The Dead City level would have made for an amazing game. Sadly, this game isn't it. But it is still a good game. I give this game a 7/10.

Have already finished Metro Exodus and I'm a little bit confused.
Great shooter from 4A Games, fantastic graphics location and storyline, but to many times I had a feeling I was playing Far Cry and I was bored. Honestly I prefered previous parts and small locations in there, so then you feel this huge atmosphere. That's why many people loved Metro universe.

Fairly good game with some looong movies, but interesting story and situations, especially when you can take decisions what to do, instead of being driven by standard path.

Still, I have played better games. This is little above average.

Last Light

Having moved the action away from the dark tunnels of Moscow's underground onto a train, going into the unknown and forced to make stops throughout the journey, Metro Exodus' authors created a memorable interactive adventure consisting of happiness from discovering love and grief from irreplacebale loss, hope of better future and despair from understanding the truth. On top of that one might call Exodus a distorting mirror that reveals the most horrible sins of mysterious Russian soul: heresy and servilism.

Metro Exodus opens up a world held closed by its predecessors. This time, it's up to our well known hero Artyom to explore the unexplored regions of Mother Russia, in all of its open world glory. So sit back and enjoy the unique experience, visual wonders and darkest secrets of the beloved Metro universe.

Overall, Metro Exodus is an enjoyable shooter. Taking Metro out of the Metro is a good move for the series, but the game still provides plenty of claustrophobic locations for those who enjoyed the dark tunnel crawls of Metro games past. The ammunition system is still limited, but it feels better managed and more forgiving this time out, although I can still see it as being frustrating to some players. If you haven't played a Metro game before or were put off by the games in the past, give Metro Exodus a chance. You can catch this train running and enjoy the ride.
