Up to try any genre of games and sometimes I find something new that I didn't think I'd like. I own a PC (built by me), Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, PS3, PS4, PS5, and a Switch. I prefer Playstation due to their focus on narrative games. For scoring, I’ll be using the Gameinformer review scale and of course influenced by my personal opinions.

    (8) Very Good. Innovated, but perhaps not in the right choice for everyone. This score indicates that there are many good things to be had, but arguable so.

    (-1) Unfinished Game

This is my first and I guess final Metal Gear Solid game. Story is intriguing but unfinished due to the developer inhouse fight so just left still twiddling your thumbs trying to understand the story. Gameplay, upgrades, content, and characters are all great and this game could have easily been a masterpiece if it was finished. I wish they added a little more stealth mechanics since once you're spotted, it's hard to hide since there aren't many hiding spots in a camp which is weird since I thought this game focus was stealth. There is also a lot of empty space in this open world which isn't a bad thing since it makes it feel more realistic. A lot of developer fill up their open world with random events every mile and it's annoying.

Stiff movement and controls break any sense of immersion you feel. Also the empty, open worlds offer nothing of interest but eye candy. Overall this game is such a disappointment and glaring step down from the established franchise. Finally, there's no true ending. It was cut content, so that pretty much gives you an idea of what you're getting here as far as quality. Expand

I have to start praising the incredible optimization of this game with extremely beautiful graphics, which runs on machines and consoles that just by looking at it, one is surprised to see that it runs on lighter devices. The script is great, especially the voice team and the game's memorable characters.

As base-building can sometimes be considered tedious, it feels like you are the (as implied) big boss at a building company. This game's story, the bosses, and consideration put into the game is all truly something to marvel at. However, since Konami did what they did, I cannot put this game any higher than an 8. First of all, if you have to play this game, then watch video guides for every mission, it's really not worth it to explore, this game doesn't reward you for exploration, and if you don't read guides, you are gonna be stuck.

For a stealth-heavy game, it sucks:

    - Most of the missions are time-sensitive, you can't just sit back and make plans to take out enemies silently. The game doesn't tell you about the time limit, but after a while, it will fail.
    - The dumbest way to take cover: face the camera to the wall and push forward. which leads to the next dumbest point
    - If you are close to an enemy, you need to take cover and then use binoculars. If you just prone and take out your binoculars you'll be seen. Makes no f-ing sense whatsoever.
    - You can't change equipment on the run. You have to stupidly wait for the supply drop. Not to mention choosing the supply is a pain the ass. What the F is the excuse for not pausing the game when using iDroid if we are playing offline?
    - sliding down the pipe will kill you, why the F implement it then?

For non-stealth missions, it sucks even harder, most of the missions need one kind of gimmick or another. Nothing is intuitive and nothing makes sense.

This game is developed by a Japanese freak, I don't even want to name him. You play one of his games, you play them all. They are all complicated in the same way, yet they are all wonky in the same way.

This game is not bad. If you enjoy Metal Gear or stealth, you'll enjoy what this game has to offer. Smooth performance and great visuals complement the satisfying gameplay. The holy grail of world-building games, it’s argued, is a black box that lets players do as they like with minimal handholding. Pliability with just the right measure of accountability. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a tactical stealth simulation wrapped in a colossal resource management puzzle inside a love letter to theatrical inscrutability, comes the closest of any game I’ve yet played to realizing that ideal.

There’s no denying the Game of the Year potential of The Phantom Pain. The campaign is absolutely massive, it’s almost too much to cope. That being said, Chapter II is a huge let-down and feels like artificial padding. Still, this is about as good as tactical espionage operations can get in a video game. [Oct 2015]
