Up to try any genre of games and sometimes I find something new that I didn't think I'd like. I own a PC (built by me), Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, PS3, PS4, PS5, and a Switch. I prefer Playstation due to their focus on narrative games. For scoring, I’ll be using the Gameinformer review scale and of course influenced by my personal opinions.

    (8) Very Good. Innovated, but perhaps not in the right choice for everyone. This score indicates that there are many good things to be had, but arguable so.

    (-1) Unfinished Game

This is my first and I guess final Metal Gear Solid game. Story is intriguing but unfinished due to the developer inhouse fight so just left still twiddling your thumbs trying to understand the story. Gameplay, upgrades, content, and characters are all great and this game could have easily been a masterpiece if it was finished. I wish they added a little more stealth mechanics since once you're spotted, it's hard to hide since there aren't many hiding spots in a camp which is weird since I thought this game focus was stealth. There is also a lot of empty space in this open world which isn't a bad thing since it makes it feel more realistic. A lot of developer fill up their open world with random events every mile and it's annoying.

This game is not bad. If you enjoy Metal Gear or stealth, you'll enjoy what this game has to offer. Smooth performance and great visuals complement the satisfying gameplay. However, the empty world, barebones story, and somewhat unnecessary mechanics (Mother Base) make it feel like it is FAR from its full potential.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Core gameplay is incredible. Hands down the greatest and deepest stealth game ever made. However its confusing story, disturbing cutscenes, rather ugly aesthetics, and horrific fantasy elements rip it away from being a legendary action game.

I knew a lot about MGS5 long before I started playing it. I have played all games in the MGS series including the portable Peace Walker, and I have delayed my MGS5 playthrough for several years after the initial reviews. Despite being a great open-world stealth action game, with flawless game design and military aesthetics, the game was said to be clearly unfinished, so I decided to skip it and not get myself disappointed. But a couple of months ago I picked it up in a sale and finally decided to check it out. And oh god it is bad. The gameplay is enjoyable, yes, but what happened to MGS? Where is all the story? Why is Snake so silent most of the game? Why do the story missions just repeat themselves? You just feel like the devs had no time or money (Kojima? No time? No Money??) and they just ripped cutscenes and turned them into cassette messages. The new villain Skullface has no backstory or motivation except some anger against the English language (what?), colonel Volgin from MGS3 is back from the dead (what??), a naked sniper deprived of words can shoot a jet with a sniper rifle but can't write something down with a pen or kill a crippled wounded guy in a hospital (what???), a lot of useless hassle with kids that has no resolution whatsoever, and I can go on and on. The game literally ends with nothing as the final act with Solidus and a big mech is simply missing. That is clearly not what should be in an MGS game. Basically, it is just half a game - gameplay with little to no consistent story. And it deserves half of a score. Expand

You should to understand, that it is a Japanese game, and there are people who likes such games, and there are people who not. Even if you are in the middle between these two - you like it.

I think that all of you know what is this game about, so I won't say anything about the gameplay, the characters and other things. I just can say that this game is very similar to that which I imagined in my childhood as the best game for me.
But since the development of the game ended under certain circumstances and the whole game came out a little torn because of this, this very much undermines the legendary and cult status of this game, although it is still too multifaceted and different-sided.

I haven't played any other games of the franchise and as a result, don't have any memories coming from Kojima games. I'm unfortunately the type of player that can't help himself but to explore and do everything a game has to offer. In the case of MGSV, that'll be all missions, side missions and practice challenges. I find the gameplay loop of calling a chopper, selecting the research stuff, crafting upgrades, listening to mission briefing, selecting the mission gear, etc. a bit too lengthy and tedious. I'm only 20ish hours into the game but I already feel kinda tired of checking mostly generic objectives off of a single map.
I find it strange that every one of these generic missions has a director, and the list of characters featured in it; again, I'm not familiar with Kojima and how he does things, but this aspect of the game didn't appeal to me. Seemed to me they're too proud of every aspect of the game.
I tried to give the game another chance by playing fast and crazy; but the first side mission I selected to do this, I crossed a specific part of the map that triggered the introduction sequence of the assassin girl. The fight wasn't good and I spent the whole rest of the session watching cutscenes.

I might desperately try playing the game again, but it's really unlikely to happen.

The stealth mechanics are just passable, but important bits are broken. Wall hug/snap seems to have a 1/2 chance of working. You'll be crouch-walking at a wall, and Snake will just happily pass right by and get himself spotted. Other times, you'll just be trying to sneak through a doorway, and Snake decides it's about time to get stuck on the edge of the frame. And again, you're spotted and have to restart. You cannot crawl under railings. Snake loves to slam doors open, even when you're crouch-walking through them. You cannot actually determine when an enemy will realistically see you or not based on things like lighting, stance, distance. It may as well just be random, as there's absolutely no consistency from what I've experienced. Enemies can only be 'held up' if you approach from behind, which again, makes absolutely no sense. Instead, you have to make your own workaround where you choke an enemy, let them go, and then hold them up, just to then tell them to lay down. All of this...or the developers could have just had a bit more common sense and let you 'hold up' enemies from the side and front if you get close enough.

People calling this the greatest stealth game of all time are out of their minds. Of the dozens I've played so far, MGSV pretty much just average at best. You do get a lot of bang for your buck, but half of that bang isn't worth the time, honestly.

I wish I got the enjoyment out of it that so many others do, but I found the story forgettable and most of the time I just drifted to my phone out of bordem, game play is clunky (even for a 2015 game). The holy grail of world-building games, it’s argued, is a black box that lets players do as they like with minimal handholding. Pliability with just the right measure of accountability. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a tactical stealth simulation wrapped in a colossal resource management puzzle inside a love letter to theatrical inscrutability, comes the closest of any game I’ve yet played to realizing that ideal.

There’s no denying the Game of the Year potential of The Phantom Pain. The campaign is absolutely massive, it’s almost too much to cope. That being said, Chapter II is a huge let-down and feels like artificial padding. Still, this is about as good as tactical espionage operations can get in a video game. [Oct 2015]
